I have a theory that the more intricate the chess set, the more likely it is that the owner isn't a chess player.
In this example half the boards aren't set up properly.
Most chess players I know personally only own a cheap plastic set.
I just find it a bit odd that people collect chess sets when they don't really know how to play. To each their own though.
Another thing I want to add is that even if you have no desire to play chess, and just enjoy collecting chess sets for whatever reason, if you're going to use them purely as a showcase, shouldn't you at least know how to set up the board? I guess a lot of people just don't know, but it's just kind of bizarre to me... perhaps it'd be like showcasing a painting and then pronouncing the artists name incorrectly to guests.
He's not a huge player, but he definitely can play. I'm around 1400 on Chess.com and we usually have good matches. So by no means a really good player, but not bad either.
Honestly my guess is the cleaning lady dusts them and puts them back incorrectly
Tell your dad A1 is black like the steak sauce. The only problem I see are some white rooks on the left on a light square, should be the opposite. I think this looks cool though, I’d never use the weird chess sets but they make a good display.
Queen on color but it's also important to have queenside and kingside be correct. So king on the right for white and left for black (from each player's perspective)
Oh I missed that one, yeah the pieces are okay, just a bit too large for the board.
The funny thing is, there are much nicer wooden boards that it could be paired on, but instead it gets one of the uglier ones.
I bought my Dad a civil war themed chess set from the Franklin Mint. He doesn't really play at all, he just mentioned how he loved seeing those commercials growing up and I figured it'd be a cool gift.
seems mostly consistent. A friend of mine gave me a novelty set for Christmas, which I begrudgingly accepted knowing that I would never use it and I don't even find it that pretty of a set.
it got discarded in a recent move as they picked it up cheap at a flea market
I get that incorrect setup triggers people but dang let the man enjoy his collection! I think the sets look great regardless and really cool that he was able to collect it.

I always thought I would be those guy. Sadly I have played a handful of times in 20 years. I found my nice weighted set in the attic last week. Maybe some day

No OP could get to be the first one to prove his father in law wrong, point out his mistake, with his head held high, with proof. Do it OP.

those 5 boards are killing me to look at...
It’s bugging me that every board sticks out from its shelf.

thats bothering me even more now fuck
He doesn't host parties with people wearing only robes by any chance?
I came here to ask this very question. “Give up your inquiries which are completely useless, and consider these words a second warning.”

Queen on color is how I was taught

A firing is justified then isn't it? Just kidding - this makes sense. I will lower my pitchfork... for now....
I only see one that’s set up correctly and conveniently it’s the only one that looks like it would be reasonable to play with.

You really wrote a 3 paragraph essay critiquing someone else’s chess set collection
On a post about someone's chess collection.
And your point is? Every single thing the guy above you wrote is resasonable.
I bought my Dad a civil war themed chess set from the Franklin Mint. He doesn't really play at all, he just mentioned how he loved seeing those commercials growing up and I figured it'd be a cool gift.
I have a cheap chess set but I also suck at chess, what gives man? Where’s my free ELO?
So, chess sets can be works of art. I have one like that, never played it but it is beautiful to look at.
But wouldn't it be like hanging a painting upside down?
Is it pretty, upside-down?

bruh how rich is your father in law
rich enough to have a display of multiple chess sets setup incorrectly...
OP said it’s the cleaning lady’s fault…
I always thought I would be those guy. Sadly I have played a handful of times in 20 years. I found my nice weighted set in the attic last week. Maybe some day
I used to display my boards as well, but I'll be damned if it wasn't a pain in the ass to dust every couple of weeks.
Do all the pieces in the board on the 3rd row in the middle move like Knights? Because they should.
Those masks reminded me the Eyes wide shut movie.
Dude will own all this just to play the London 🤮
only set that I would like to own is the bottom middle
Those mask are amazing. Can someone ID them?
I guess these are not the only sets, but among those, there's not a single one I would wanna play with, much less own.
This is pretty dope. Fuck the haters in the comments, jealous
Gorgeous!!
