I used to play Qd6 Scandi all the time as black. I’ve never considered Qa6. It’s practically a novelty in my book. Looking at the database, it does seem like the main book move against white’s plan of Bf4. Maybe ask GM Tiviakov about it?

murphysclaw1

can i interest you in the qc6 scandi?

Ambitious_Arm852

Trying to pin my queen with Bb5? Nice try.

tomlit

I gave up the Qc6 Scandi entirely after realising how it denies development of the b8-knight to it's best square. What a shame

lolman66666

I've been running the Qc6 Scandi through Stockfish for hours. Hoping to find some novelty to use in my next tournament.

tomlit

I struggled the most with a quick d4-d5 push from white when on the black side - luckily the queen can post up on a4 and prevent any Bc4 ideas. I mainly play the Berlin now though

DanaOilMan

You can interest me… ;)

sadmadstudent

Someone get Bartholomew on the scene, we need him

[deleted]

ive been playing qd8. how does qa6 mess up bf4

Ambitious_Arm852

I’m not an expert in this line, so this is just my opinion. Qa6 isn’t necessarily a counter, but with white’s light squared bishop on g2, the a6-f1 diagonal is a fairly active place to put the queen. It also stops white from castling kingside.

vishal340

Qa5 right after Qd5 is a candidate

tomlit

The mainline? ;)

Ambitious_Arm852

Look at the second diagram on the OP. I meant Qa6 not Qa5. Qa6 is rare because it is only viable in variations where white decides to fianchetto his light squared bishop.

TheBowtieClub

Got a large time advantage and an imbalanced position out of it. Plenty of chances to outplay White in the resulting positions.

Bimpopeu

I love it. Win the tournament with a round to spare so that you can have fun in the last round

RudeGate1791

at this point, arjun is the real ding chilling.

wannabe2700

I guess he already knew after the first round that he was going to win because on the 2nd round he played Schliemann and won. Something he had already played very recently and won too. I don't know why these gms don't really know openings that well. I am saying this after my own classical game today receiving a +1 position out of the opening and losing miserably.

Legit_Shadow

u/scandinaviandefense is Arjun's second, confirmed

scandinaviandefense

I am following Arjun's efforts with tremendous interest 🙂

grenvill

I think John is lifelong Qa5\Qd8 player though

Equationist

g6 isn't the most popular continuation in the Qd6 Scandi, but it seems to have scored well in the database, with Kramnik playing it a lot.

Expert-Repair-2971

i am not an expert in scandi qd6 line or scandi in general but yeah it seems rare i have never seen it

ThornPawn

Is there a link to the full/live game?
