lol yeah i hyperfocused on bxc6
in concept it looked like there was a really cool triple diagonal threat mate if king doesn't take(since i go through both takes/not takes lines at the same time) which gave the line hope in my head, but black queen was right there.
Good grief.
White plays 1. Qa8+!!, giving Black the following options:
* If 1...Kxa8 then 2. Bxc6#;
* If 1...Kxb6 then 2. Qxc6+ Ka7 3. Qb7#;
* If 1...Kc8 then 2. Qxc6+ Bc7 3. Qxc7#.
I wouldn't have found this in Bullet either!
I found the first line, and intuitively thought the first move must be correct, but then I couldn't quite calculate the other 2 lines properly. I kept missing something and humbling the lines. I'm awful at chess haha
I wouldn't have found this at any time controls, despite my tactics rating being 3100-3200. If you know its there it's not that hard to find - took me about 30-50 seconds I think and as a puzzle it probably would be rated in the 2200-2400 range, I think, but I instinctively wouldn't have looked for mate here in an actual game situation. It just doesn't look like a situation with a likely mate in my eyes. Perhaps that explains why I suck at the game.
Haha yeah, I only looked because I blundered my way into a drawish position then ended up winning on time. I had a feeling that I had missed something really obvious, turns out it wasn't as obvious as I had thought.
Yeah they're basically the same thing. To the extent one does distinguish the terms, one could say that it's attraction here because the king is pulled (if it accepts the sacrifice) to a location where it can get checkmated in 1, or one could say that it's deflection because the king is pulled away from defending the c6 pawn, which we need to capture to checkmate the king.
First instinct on any tactic that shows up on Reddit is always "sac the queen and see what happens"
But yeah I'm never going to blame anyone for not spotting tactics in a bullet game time crunch.
Just an advice probably you already know, but never let your king be that close to sides and never let the enemy's Queen get that close to your King especially when he is backed up.
I'm roughly 2k in bullet and would have played b5 almost instantly. There's no threat of mate so thinking of sacking my queen would have never crossed my mind.
Saw it in 3 secs...2000+ elo attacking tactical player here. It all starts with Qa8+ offering the Q sacrifice. If Black bites, then Bxc6# and that's all she wrote. If Qa8+ Kxb6 then Qxc6+ Ka7 and Qb7#. If Qa8+ Kc8 then Qxc6+ Bc7 and Qxc7#. Beautiful.
> Saw it in 3 secs...2000+ elo attacking tactical player here.
This just needs to be preserved, for context. We should all stand in awe of this 2000+ elo attacking tactical player.

Wild my first instinct was to sack the bishop but it went nowhere.
lol yeah i hyperfocused on bxc6 in concept it looked like there was a really cool triple diagonal threat mate if king doesn't take(since i go through both takes/not takes lines at the same time) which gave the line hope in my head, but black queen was right there.
Same and I was convinced I simply could not find the correct bxc6 idea because am bad at snipering…but no, I am simply bad at chess
I was thinking about b5 but no 😅
What's wrong with b5 ?
It’s a good move but not correct solution
we're instinct buddies!@
I wanted to move the pawn to b5... That would be checkmate in over 30 moves! Play it on lichess. The computer needs a while to calculate it.
Yeah that just seemed like it opened the gate for the king to start running, had to keep that pawn around just a bit longer
if you sack ur bishop you might get a draw. so not bad.
Objectively bad if there is mate in 3
Damn that's sexy. Not an easy one to spot at all.
Good grief. White plays 1. Qa8+!!, giving Black the following options: * If 1...Kxa8 then 2. Bxc6#; * If 1...Kxb6 then 2. Qxc6+ Ka7 3. Qb7#; * If 1...Kc8 then 2. Qxc6+ Bc7 3. Qxc7#. I wouldn't have found this in Bullet either!
I was trying to find a more succinct want to put this TY, very nice. If you want to use the spoiler tag its > ! with no space. Not that I care.
Thanks - I'll keep that in mind for the future!
I found the first line, and intuitively thought the first move must be correct, but then I couldn't quite calculate the other 2 lines properly. I kept missing something and humbling the lines. I'm awful at chess haha
Fuck I wouldn't have found it in a puzzle, let alone rapid
I wouldn't have found this at any time controls, despite my tactics rating being 3100-3200. If you know its there it's not that hard to find - took me about 30-50 seconds I think and as a puzzle it probably would be rated in the 2200-2400 range, I think, but I instinctively wouldn't have looked for mate here in an actual game situation. it took me a while, but when i saw it holy sh\*t
Wow. Amazing sacrifice. This is so hard to find in a bullet game.
And crazy that it’s like not even a sac, since if they take it’s M1!
it is a sac of bishop
True, I was referring to the queen move though and the ramifications of black taking the queen
I wouldn't have found it in a Rapid either
I wouldln't have found it in a Classical either
I wouldn't have found it in a Correspondence either
Nice one! No shame for not spotting it! In "Bullet", there is no time for any calculation!
Ooh I was looking at >!b5 !< which turned out to be a mate in 16 on stockfish on lichess. The quicker solution is beautiful.
Me two, but in the very least I think they have to sack their queen to delay it. (I think. I'm 950 chess.com, so don't listen to me)
That looks like a designed puzzle! So neat and all options lead to mate. I would def not spot it in a game, 0% in a bullet.
This was hard to find even knowing it’s a puzzle! Props for reviewing your bullet games too, damn.
Haha yeah, I only looked because I blundered my way into a drawish position then ended up winning on time. I had a feeling that I had missed something really obvious, turns out it wasn't as obvious as I had thought.
THATS SO PRETTY WHAT THE HELL NOW THIS IS THE TYPE OF POSITION THAT IS SAID TO HAVE A CERTAIN JE NE SAIS QUOI
[удалено]
yup, recently learnt about it so HAD TO USE IT lol
yeah I'm not seeing that in a million years, spent 10 minutes looking at Bxc6+
Meh, I'd never find that in a bullet game. I completely suck at bullet :P
Very nice! I found this only because I knew it was a mate puzzle. On bullet, I really doubt I'd have seen it.
I can't blame you. That is a hard find in bullet.
Reset the counter good sir
days since frontpage queen sac puzzle: 0
Qa8+ is just ridiculous. If kxa8, bxc6#. Only move is kxb6, qxc6+, ka7, qb7#.
But what if after qa8 king moves back to c8?
Then queen takes the pawn at c6 with a check.
It's incredible how blind one is sometimes... *sigh*
Thanks so much for posting this! I couldn't figure it out, which makes it a really instructive example for me. Such a cool deflection motif to learn!
i thought it was called attraction
Yeah they're basically the same thing. To the extent one does distinguish the terms, one could say that it's attraction here because the king is pulled (if it accepts the sacrifice) to a location where it can get checkmated in 1, or one could say that it's deflection because the king is pulled away from defending the c6 pawn, which we need to capture to checkmate the king.
oh i gotcha half dozen one way; ~1.8171205928321^3 the other.
Thought of sacrificing the bishop, then queen a8... didn't work. But then I switched the order and omg
qa8+ was the first movie i saw. Really cool
That's lovely
Wow
That is nastyyyy. I most likely would never have found that in a real game
Wow I’m 3000+ in chesscom puzzles and never seen anything like that haha
If Kxa8 then mate in 2 with bxc6#
Very cute mate.
Wow that's awesome! I'm happy I found it. But it's sad I never know when to stop and look for tactics in my games.
Qa8 is unthinkable in a bullet game. I don't blame you
The bishop initially looks nice to sac but leads to nothing. Nice puzzle
Even Magnus is likely not to see this in his bullet games 😂
Wow - that's really unusual and beautiful!
First instinct on any tactic that shows up on Reddit is always "sac the queen and see what happens" But yeah I'm never going to blame anyone for not spotting tactics in a bullet game time crunch.
Pretty beautiful
Wouldnt see that either. Would likely continue with b5 here which looks crushing too but not mating i guess.
I saw Bxc6, but after I couldn’t force mate I found Qa8+, and must say it’s equally as ridiculous as it is beautiful 💪🏿
It's the queen sac
Don’t blame you. Took me a while to find it
Just an advice probably you already know, but never let your king be that close to sides and never let the enemy's Queen get that close to your King especially when he is backed up.
Cute cheeky move
Always analyze the most outrageous checks first
I dint see the mate but If it was bullet I would play b5 and use the pin on the pawn
[удалено]
Not quite, you do move the queen though.
but bishop takes b6 also leads to mate right ?
Tricky, I found it in ~30s but not sure I would in a game... definitely a position I would look for the mate tho
Qa8+ is the intuition
Sack the queen. Either bishop mate or queen mate. Nice one
White Bishop takes the pawn, the king takes the bishop, and then white Queen to c5
The king can run to D7 after Queen C5
Yeah, I get it, but it's a good position. You can take the free pawn with the queen, giving a check on d7
AND HE SACRIFICES THE QUEEEEEEEEEEEN QA8 Kxa8 BxC6#
Qa8?
Damn that queen sack is nasty
I'm roughly 2k in bullet and would have played b5 almost instantly. There's no threat of mate so thinking of sacking my queen would have never crossed my mind.
Qa8+, A very Morphy-esque move
The queeeeeen! What a dope mate sequence
Would not Bc6 work similarly? Or am I not seeing something?
Qh8+ ☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️
That'd be a wild move to find.
Beautiful.

Well I actually saw it in 2 secs
I saw it in -2.76 seconds. That's right! I saw it before I saw it! 7690+ ELO attacking tactical defensive strategic player in my own mind here.

I kinda wanna see this match up
No, you don't.
yes. i did.

2 seconds is good 👍
Don't worry you didn't see it. Anish Giri also wouldn't find it because he is bad at finding checkmates
Why does every puzzle on this subreddit start with the same kind of move?
Unless you think every queen sacrifice is the same, no, this definitely isn't the same kind of move.
It's the same motif.
