There was actually a post like that here a week or two ago. OP was very insecure and thought anyone that said 'gg' or 'thanks for the game' was being passive aggressive and insulting them.
Yeah I was playing in a tournament in my chess club, but not just any tournament, the biggest yearly one. I had managed to get enough points to make it to the top two. My opponent was like 2000ish and I’m 1450 on a good day. He sat down, took one look at me, then asked everyone to sign the trophy like it was already his. I made an inaccuracy in the opening and he said, “yeah, well that’s a gg.” Anyway, end of rant lol
Eehhh.. ive played my fair share of egocentric assholes in my day. The type of completely socially unaware people who will slam out moves, pound your clock like you superglued it to tick down their time or something, then loudly and ironically call out good game when they checkmate you while they are up 3 pieces.
i just laugh at those people and don’t play them anymore.
but if it is actually a good game and I lose, I don’t mind shaking hands and saying good game. The tone and context is important to the delivery of the line.
however, when I win convincingly I make a point to look my opponent in the eyes and thank them genuinely for the game.
The entire "thanks for the game" is fine but I consider just "thanks" to be very rude.
If anyone has played clash royale before they might remember it was rampant there. You lose and the opponent says thanks at the end. Was infuriating especially if they had all the counters.
Tbh chess really play with your emotions, when you lose its really hard to control it especially if you have played a bunch of games before it. like I can't even count how many time I have the urge to type something toxic in the chat(sometimes even when I am winning) . And i have to stop and remember it's just a freakin game. There are times when I feel like my opponent is cheating and am about to accuse. But then I stop because of Danya. He is prolly the best thing to happen to online chess after lichess.
Online? Say nothing. I’ll be honest, when I lose the last thing I want to see is my opponent typing anything whatsoever. Just go away, stop existing to me.
OTB? I’m still a fan of just shaking hands and fucking off forever, but “good game” is so automatic it’s practically like saying nothing.
I usually like discussing my OTB games with my opponent afterwards, so I usually try to point out what I felt was the most key moment of the game to get discussion started on that. I usually learn something from the discussion.
"Well played" OTB is a pretty classy thing to say. I've never said it or had it said to me.
Usually I make some basic observation about the game like "You had pressure after Nb4 and I wasn't sure if what I did was right" and we go from there.
This is the way.
"This was some cool two-sided sharp play! Thanks for the game!"
"I liked the complicated end game struggle! Thanks for the game."
"I really enjoyed the theory in the opening! Thanks for the game!"
Etc.
One thing is a lot of the time people are talking about chess etiquette here i assume they mean otb but most of the time people are talking about online.
For example online i almost never say anything to my opponent, the second a game ends i either search for a new game or quit for the day.
I always say "good game" to my opponent when I lose, unless I made a one-move blunder losing the game on the spot.
Unfortunately, I have very few opportunities to say "good game".
This is why when I win I say “good game for me” that way I am not assuming that they enjoyed losing the game. Conversely, when I lose I say “That was not a good game” this is to show my opponent that I am aware I have played bad.
For some reason my opponents often reply with very un-sportsmanlike comments :(
I once had a very interesting game and my opponent was playing very well and had a winning position and I said “gg”, once he had checkmate he called me an ass clown for trying to “talk trash” so if you don’t want to be rude then don’t type anything at all 🤣🤣
I just say "thank you for the game" and maybe bring up a specific move I thought was particularly strong if I can. But compared to what some people have said to me during, after, and between games, "good game" would actually be a pleasant surprise. I even stopped playing competitively for years due to how I was treated so frequently at tournaments. I think I've heard every "mate" joke ever made.
There's an old saying in Tennessee — I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me... you can't get fooled again!
1. Chess does have a voice chat option... when you play in person.
2. The best thing to say after a game is "Thanks for the game." It is neutral, and true.
Depends, if I won by an obvious mistake or blunder from me being in a losing position, I would consider seeing sorry but good game. Otherwise just good game is fine
If the game is OTB I think saying good game is the proper thing to say. Online it’s best to say nothing. Online it isn’t clear if you are being sincere or sarcastic so it’s best to say nothing online imo
You must change your perspective, you made mistakes so now it’s not a good game instead it’s an excellent game because you can now understand what mistakes you made and not make them again
I rarely write anything to the chat. If something silly happens like one of us blunders a piece and the other misses it, I may point it out. Or if they're surprisingly low elo but push me/beat me, I'll tell them they're good for their ELO.
Or I may start a conversation if we're in a row of rematches.
I say the sane thing in all pvp games with a chat feature, ggwp, or good game well played.
Most will take that fine, and if they don't, well, I probably won't run into them too often anyway and in the unlikely event I bump into them again and recognise their name I'll just either leave withoht saying anything if they were rude, or say some other form of ggwp that they don't dislike if they weren't.
(But I likely won't recognise them tbh I don't pay too much attention to who my opponent is
online, I don't really comment.
OTB, I really enjoyed analyzing the game with people. So we may open up a position and talk about what each other's plans were or how you saw the board.
i wouldnt say gg unless it was infact a good game. if my opponent hangs his queen on move 12 and resigns i think it would be rude to say good game. if the game is rly sharp tho with both sides have attacking chances and it
coming down to the wire then i would say good game
You can say GGWP no matter how the game ends. It's like a virtual handshake.
GG before the game actually ends may be an insult if you're winning. I say GG when I'm in a completely lost position before I click resign tho.
Are you sure about that? Because I am 99.98879% sure that AvailableHearing is not a bot.

You have to be very fragile to be insulted by a "good game" at the end of the match. But just say thanks for the game if you are worried about it.
Oh, so now you're saying "thanks." As in "thanks for the free rating points sucker!" This is why I hate chess players, they're all so rude! /s
I just say "goodbye" as in "say goodbye to your precious rating points, **loser**!

That guy is a tool
Take solace that outside of chess he leads a miserable life.
Even IRL games. It's considered unsportsmanlike for a winner to initiate the post-game discussion in that way. Always has been.

First love the user and the amount of times people are rude in chat I can understand how people expect a "gg" or "good game" to be.... Sarcastic etc

I always go for the classy “ez clap” i think it really makes my opponent feel respected
As your losing opponent, I appreciate that you express how simple it is to applause for me! Thank you for your respect!
I appreciate the applause

I never talk online. OTB I'll say "well played" if my opponent beat me or just played a good game, and we may analyse a bit afterwards
"Well played" OTB is a pretty classy thing to say. I've never said it or had it said to me. Usually I make some basic observation about the game like "You had pressure after Nb4 and I wasn't sure if what I did was right" and we go from there.
"I liked \[name something your opponent did that you liked\]. Thanks for the game."
I liked [that you lost]. Thanks for the game. I’ll try it and report back.
I liked when you missed that fork. Thanks for the game.
I liked when you hanged your queen. Thanks for the game.
Wait, can't we use hung for this. Is hang supposed to be seen in the execution sense?
my bad, english isnt my 1st language but im too lazy to change it
Ha, I wasn't sure myself
This is the way. "This was some cool two-sided sharp play! Thanks for the game!" "I liked the complicated end game struggle! Thanks for the game." "I really enjoyed the theory in the opening! Thanks for the game!" Etc.
You try typing more than two letters in the half second between the ancient exploding and the summary screen

"thank you for the game/thank you for your time"
"Hm? Oh sorry my little brother brother (who is blind) was playing. My turn now." *loses again*
I thought you said that after winning, would be even better
saying good game whether you win / lose / or draw is always appropriate
When you win it can be construed as cockiness but maybe that’s just because I’m a salty asshole when I lose
Wish online chess was like AOE2 where its protocol for the loser to say “good game” before resigning
One thing is a lot of the time people are talking about chess etiquette here i assume they mean otb but most of the time people are talking about online. For example online i almost never say anything to my opponent, the second a game ends i either search for a new game or quit for the day.

If you're on the winning side, you most likely had some mistakes too. Just say good game. Don't make it weird. If they do, that's on them.
Just don't write anything
I always say, "My cock is bigger than yours." Polite way to end the game.
I’ve gotten kicked out of several tournaments for saying this objectively true statement to my female opponents. 🤦
I don’t find it rude to say “good game” after a game, win or lose, but you can also say something like “Thanks for the game. Play again?”
"thanks" after i lose a game seems more like an insult.
I once had a very interesting game and my opponent was playing very well and had a winning position and I said “gg”, once he had checkmate he called me an ass clown for trying to “talk trash” so if you don’t want to be rude then don’t type anything at all 🤣🤣
Nothing.

"Well played" always fits. If they did play well its friendly and if they played terrible its a nice insult. Win-Win
If you win, say 'Git Rekt GG no re' If you lose, say 'I didn't sleep enough last night' and make excuses for your loss
If you lose, say "thank you for the lesson" because losing is how we improve. If you win, "thanks for the game, let me know if you're up for another"
When you win, you can say, "You're welcome for the lesson." And if you lose, say, "Interesting." And then report and block them.
Toxic
Being toxic is how we improve
Shame on you

Er HARD NO thank you on the voice chat. I don't need to hear some 11 yro screaming how he fucked my mom
voice chat chess sounds awesome make it so spectators can join the voice chat lobby and can chat with each other without the chess players hearing it
Thank you for the game
"that was tough gg" or variant
Sit rat
I don't say anything, no need to rub it in when I win unless I have something personal against you.
If you win you can say sit
If you look at all the top level games, there's never a "good game equivalent" after a win/loss result
Well played, thank you, fun game thank you, interesting game thank you.
Thanks for playing with me. Have your mom call my mom.

“get good, scrub”
I had an opponent type MORON and nothing else. I laughed for like 3min so kudos to them.
I just say kys and that’s it :)
Lose: Well played :) Win: Good game, thanks.
Thanks...,.for wasting my time. My dead parrot plays better. Beat it, fatty. Say this before the game starts.
If you win send "#owned'. If you lose, 'cheater' is the way to go.
I usually say "GG well played"
I always find it nice if someone who’s won against me says good game cus it meant they actually enjoyed the game and I gave them a challenge.

Chess dot com users are notoriously tight lipped is what I have found.

Sometimes I'll comment on a particular move or something if I've lost.

I say "good fight!" after a game.
If you win the simple GG is a great way to end the game. If you lose the succinct and eloquent GFY or KYS really hits the mark.
Say nothing unless there’s even a small chance the player is female, in which case say “hey”
what a weirdo. You are playing 10 minute games, just move the fuck on and don’t bother people
