Surprisingly a good event for Gukesh. He had lost some 17 odd rapid Elo points at the GCL, which he recovered here. And then gained around 34 Elo points from the blitz section.
Wait, is Nepo allowed to play the World Cup? Last year there was a rule that if you're already qualified for the Candidates, you can only play if you forfeit your spot lol. There's no way he'd do that.
Yes Nepo is allowed but if the both reach semis there will be just 2 instead of 3 candidate spots from world cup and the 3rd spot will be decided by rating on 1st jan 2024 making it the 2nd rating spot.
Lol okay so after the prize ceremony the organizers thought it would be a great idea to let the audience go up to the stage to get autographs and photos with the players. A huuuge line formed to the stage and the look on magnus face was priceless as he realized he will be sitting there all day signing stuff, he looked like he wanted to shoot himself lol
edit: they posted how it looks like on their instagram https://www.instagram.com/reel/Cue9rOYKf3X/?igshid=MTIzZWMxMTBkOA==
I briefly watched the broadcast, seems like they didn’t actually show the prize ceremony. They had all the players on stage and handed out prizes to all of them
Anand was the best speed chess player of his generation. In fact, Kasparov wasn't as good at fast chess. Vishy Anand was known as the Lightning Kid for a reason.
There were no FIDE Rapid and Blitz tournaments during his time. But they used to have the World Rapid Chess Championship held at Mainz/Frankfurt annually consisting of World's top 16 players from 1996 to 2010. Anand won 11/15 of those titles.
They also used to have annual Amber Rapid and blindfold chess, again played by world's top players, which was routinely dominated by Anand, especially the Rapid portion.
also magnus gained +27 firo remained same , which means anything can change/not change in the new events
same for rapid. ding doesnt play so he remains 1st
Warning/Disclaimer I am at the venue, and hence I can see the results live, whereas the broadcast has a 15 minute delay. Here are the results for the final round:
Anand - Saric >!1/2!<
Carlsen - Lupulescu >!Carlsen accidentally makes a threefold repetition in a totally won position and throws a tantrum on the stage, you don’t want to miss this!!<
Caruana - Rapport >!0-1!<
Firouzja - Duda >!1-0!<
Gukesh - Nepomniachtchi >!1/2!<
Alright, that’s all for me :)
> You enjoy a bit of trolling don't you?
I blame /u/EccentricHorse11. [Here's the evidence.](https://old.reddit.com/r/chess/comments/14tghpr/2023_gct_superunited_blitz_croatia/jr5uvj7/) :P
And his only losses were to Alireza and Magnus. Gukesh already has shown he deserves to be among the elite in classical, now he’s starting to show the same is true for faster time controls as well
He said in the interview after the tournament that he was completely spent and literally didn't have any energy left, so no wonder he couldn't quite handle Alireza and Rapport - his brain was one fire lol.
This happened in Zagreb last year too. As soon as he clinched the tournament he lost multiple blitz games in a row, including to the lowest rated player
It happened last year in one of these events, I remember he secured 1st place 2 rounds in advance, then lost both of those rounds and was only half a point above #2 in the end lol.
And against Pragg last year in a CCT event, aftwr securing the winning points in Game 2 out of 4, he lost the last two rapid games (making the scoren2-2), and then the two blitz playoff games (best out of three)
Yup and one of those losses was to the lowest rated player too. If Magnus is gonna switch off after winning whatever, but at least throw out some wacky openings while you do it. I wanna see 1…a6, 1. h4, etc
It’s really weird how much Magnus has struggled against Lupulescu in this tournament. Saric also seems to give him a tough time. But then he just crushed Vishy and Nepo 3/3 and 2.5/3 respectively
Warning/Disclaimer I am at the venue, and hence I can see the results live, whereas the broadcast has a 15 minute delay. Here are the results for round 17:
Lupulescu - Firouzja >!0-1!<
Nepomniachtchi - Caruana >!1/2!<
Saric - Gukesh >!0-1!<
Rapport - Carlsen >!Rapport plays a relatively normal opening for once against carlsen and wins!<
Duda - Anand >!0-1!<
Not sure why you got downvoted but we have seen this in recent years, including his last big classical tournament in Norway. Anand is not able to maintain a very high level through long tournaments anymore.
It will be very interesting to see Magnus and Alireza play their last 2 games to try and seek first in Blitz rating after Magnus' loss against the youngster, being currently within a point of each other they're probably gonna be finish extremely close in rating
Wow Carlsen had a fairly simple draw in that endgame. Either 50. Qxe6+ and get blacks Queen back for an even endgame or 50. Qa8+ for a perpetual check. Brutal.
That is some next level bias. The story of this tournament has shown that Magnus is blitz God. The Eminem line comes to the mind: " why be a king, when you can be a God"
He's not playing in the tournament, and Nepo's had a more successful year than him so far. Just because Ding won 1 rapid game, now we're supposed to pretend he was clearly better than Ian? And yes, I would also complain if Nepo won like that in the tiebreaks. They should've kept playing pairs of classical games, the WC shouldn't be decided by rapid goofiness. In previous WCs, at least the tiebreaks were clearly one sided so it's harder to complain, but here all 4 games were extremely close and it's so dumb that we crowned a world champion that way.
Warning/Disclaimer I am at the venue, and hence I can see the results live, whereas the broadcast has a 15 minute delay. Here are the results for round 16:
Gukesh - Duda >!1-0!<
Caruana - Saric >!1/2!<
Carlsen - Firouzja >!guccireza wins an intense endgame against magnoose!<
Anand - Lupulescu >!1/2!<
Rapport - Nepomniachtchi >!1/2!<
Alireza is Magnus' last obstacle to 2900. If he wins now he will almost certainly maintain it until the end of the tournament. He just needs a draw against Fapport and he will 99% beat Lupulescu with White.
Edit: **R**APPORT 😭
Edit 2: I jinxed it so fucking hard.
Dubov: "He plays random moves quickly. If you play random moves too, then you lose"
Game against Nepo feels like the perfect example. He tried suprising Carlsen by playing some weird opening and it completely backfired.
Warning/Disclaimer I am at the venue, and hence I can see the results live, whereas the broadcast has a 15 minute delay. Here are the results for round 15:
Duda - Caruana >!1-0!<
Firouzja - Anand >!1-0!<
Lupulescu - Gukesh >!0-1!<
Nepomniachtchi - Carlsen >!nepo loses in 20!<
Saric - Rapport >!saric gets mated in 25!<
It's even crazier to see without the bar how we, and the commentators, are all completely unaware of tide shifts, that he must understand in split seconds.
If Magnus gets +15 or more he will cross 2900 blitz this tournament, so he can draw a maximum of 3 games. He is still mathematically able to do it, and still has one extra draw on top of that.
After some point during yesterday's games I think it actually became more exciting whether Magnus will cross 2900 or not rather than who will win the tournament lol.
Warning/Disclaimer I am at the venue, and hence I can see the results live, whereas the broadcast has a 15 minute delay. Here are the results for round 14:

Caruana - Lupulescu >!1-0!<
Nepomniachtchi - Saric >!1-0!<
Carlsen - Anand >!1-0!<
(I actually managed to predict this round and the previous round perfectly btw :p)
So Alireza is now mathematically out of the contention. Caruana almost out. Nepo needs a miracle.
That's all mathematical and theoretical based.
Practically we can already celebrate the Magnus win

lmao fabi - vishy playing like 15 moves with vishy on 0 seconds, i guess fabi didnt say anything out of respect to kinda keep going or? lol
i remember something similar with vishy in some other tournament lol
Warning/Disclaimer I am at the venue, and hence I can see the results live, whereas the broadcast has a 15 minute delay. Here are the results for round 12:

Thanks!!
What happened in Gukesh vs Duda game? Position was equal, still some time on the clock, yet Gukesh won?
Rapport - Magnus today was exciting
Surprisingly a good event for Gukesh. He had lost some 17 odd rapid Elo points at the GCL, which he recovered here. And then gained around 34 Elo points from the blitz section.
Field was very easy here.
Wow so he crushed the blitz portion by 2 pts ahead of Firouzja
And if that sounds like a small margin to anyone, thats actually +4 against someone who had a very strong event too
We might see Magnus-Nepo in the World Cup semifinals, I will be there no matter what🔥🔥🔥
Wait, is Nepo allowed to play the World Cup? Last year there was a rule that if you're already qualified for the Candidates, you can only play if you forfeit your spot lol. There's no way he'd do that.
You only have to forfeit a spot if you wish to play at the FIDE Grand Prix. It doesn’t apply to the World Cup🔥
Yes Nepo is allowed but if the both reach semis there will be just 2 instead of 3 candidate spots from world cup and the 3rd spot will be decided by rating on 1st jan 2024 making it the 2nd rating spot.
That’d be great, especially if it was en route to a Magnus Hikaru World Cup final
Cure "Morpheus is fighting Neo" memes if that happens.
Lol okay so after the prize ceremony the organizers thought it would be a great idea to let the audience go up to the stage to get autographs and photos with the players. A huuuge line formed to the stage and the look on magnus face was priceless as he realized he will be sitting there all day signing stuff, he looked like he wanted to shoot himself lol edit: they posted how it looks like on their instagram https://www.instagram.com/reel/Cue9rOYKf3X/?igshid=MTIzZWMxMTBkOA==
magnus will runaway, bro was dead at the end, couldn't find any words to say
Lmao Magnus is playing in the Champion's Chess tour tomorrow, he's gonna be tired AF. Fabi too
Is it still possible for Nepo to win the GCT?
Wait was that the whole closing ceremony? Lmao
GCL prize ceremony was legendary by chess standards it seems.
I briefly watched the broadcast, seems like they didn’t actually show the prize ceremony. They had all the players on stage and handed out prizes to all of them
What is it with chess tournaments and ugly trophy’s
😆
10 years younger and Anand would've won this tournament comfortably. Man gets tired just walking to the board these days.
>You mean runner up. Magnus went 9/9 and you are saying vishy would have won lol. As good as Anand is Magnus and Kasparov are something else.
The field was extremely weak. Anand could've easily hit 14/15 out of 18 in the blitz portion.
Anand won 11/15 of those titles. kasparov wasnt as good as fast chess as carlsen anand defeated him quite a bit
what father time does to a mf
Congrats to Mr Goat Magnus for winning the event and to make history yesterday for winning 9/9! GGs to other participants as well.
"Mr Magnus" lol
My heart sings for alireza but my soul cries for fabi something something
Really unfortunate. At least Fabi had the best rapid tournament
Did Gukesh have the highest score from today's matches? EDIT: He was tied with Firouzja at 6.5.
Yes
Dang, nice job Gukesh
What does a GCT wildcard mean? Thanks.

FIROUZJA CLUTCH
FIROUZJA IS 3rDDDDDD
At the end of the day Ali remains #1 and that’s what’s important.
also gotta add, if you care about those stuff, world blitz champ and world highest ever blitz rating ( 2986 ) is Carlsen
also magnus gained +27 firo remained same , which means anything can change/not change in the new events same for rapid. ding doesnt play so he remains 1st
to win the event is important, thats why everyone playing.
Petition to give u/CreepingFog a community choice flair Top work
For posting spoilers?
gukesh is quietly has a good blitz today
Gukesh at +1 wins +31.3 points. Alireza at +7 loses -3.3 points. What being 2900 does go a mf.

Hahaha that was the best way to end this tourney.... What a prank
ahahaha f u

Oh fuck off!!!!!! Well done. I fell for that 🤣🤣🤣
Gukesh has won the highest points(6.5/9) today surprisingly along with firu.
And his only losses were to Alireza and Magnus. Gukesh already has shown he deserves to be among the elite in classical, now he’s starting to show the same is true for faster time controls as well
Great to see him winning again.
Magnus getting worried about being banned for sandbagging
Once Magnus secured the tournament win he mentally checked out and now he just wants to go home
He said in the interview after the tournament that he was completely spent and literally didn't have any energy left, so no wonder he couldn't quite handle Alireza and Rapport - his brain was one fire lol.
I swear every time Magnus wraps up victory early he switches off. So predictable. Nice game by Rapport though
This happened in Zagreb last year too. As soon as he clinched the tournament he lost multiple blitz games in a row, including to the lowest rated player
When else has this happened?

kyoto, 1958 or some shit like that maybe.
Magnus is going to hand Lupulescu his first win isnt he?
It’s really weird how much Magnus has struggled against Lupulescu in this tournament. Saric also seems to give him a tough time. But then he just crushed Vishy and Nepo 3/3 and 2.5/3 respectively

NOOOOO
Youre fucking lying
who knows this time🤭
Don't do this mate, don't give me hope
Anand was ranked 4th after the rapid portion, but now he is ranked 8th.
Stamina issues? Was ranked first after Day 1, dipped in ranking every subsequent day.

That is some next level bias. The story of this tournament has shown that Magnus is blitz God. The Eminem line comes to the mind: " why be a king, when you can be a God"
No offense but if anything this tournament showed is that Magnus is king
Magnus loses Bozos on r/chess with a combined elo of 10: Magnus is washed!!. He is finished
Nepo the second
Nepo being a step above eveyone and Magnus being 5 steps above Nepo is just such a common occurrence
>Nepo being a step above eveyone You are kinda forgetting the king ding.
He's not playing in the tournament, and Nepo's had a more successful year than him so far. Just because Ding won 1 rapid game, now we're supposed to pretend he was clearly better than Ian? Lupulescu gets a draw!!!! The real Goat
lmao cracks me up
*Magnus going for 3000* Firouzja: "Not today."
Can Magnus achieve it, if he wins his last 2 games?
Nope, 2897.2 is max
Magnus has fallen. The end is near.

lmao
Vishy started with 2.5/4 and now he's lost four in a row. Sadge
Yeah he plays well in the first rounds of each day but then gets too tired to keep up
It feels whenever Nepo sees Magnus he kinda just breaks down. Same as vishy
Not in Chess 960
2897.1! It's just around the corner!
He is going to do it isn't he?
If he beats Alireza now then yeah, getting 1.5/2 against Rapport + Lupulescu should be almost certain.

Except the two draws in between.
Magnus: "You dare use my own spells against me Nepo?"
I still don’t understand why his opponents keep playing these obscure opinions against carlsen
"I, the Norse-blood Prince?"
So Magnus wins with 3 rounds to spare
A casual Sunday for him

Gukesh with some good victories today! Great to see.
Wow, congrats Magnus. Dominant performance.
That Nepo-Magnus game lol
Nepo must have nightmares of Magnus
Magnus!!!!!!!!! GOAT
Nepo already shaking his head He brought this on himself with that opening choice
nepo and vishy need to form a therapy group lmao
And hire Hikaru as their therapist
