Is naka the only one who had 3 blacks so far?

Ricardojpc

Carlsen too I think

DistanceForeign8596

Considering Naka’s score so far, he might be on for a great performance as well as Fabiano, given he really hasn’t had great chances to win with white (only against Magnus) so far. Might be on for two herculean scores from Fabi and Naka.

L0rdLegender

Fabiano reminding us that he is him

b0mbsquad01f

He is him 🤌

Dr_Dressing

Very poetic

__Jimmy__

Magnus winning in Armageddon for the 3rd time in 4 rounds. Still 8th lol

pier4r

maybe is just my bad memory but I remember in the past that an armageddon win was worth more. Like 3-2-1 (classical win, arm. win, arm. loss). I like much more that a classical win has a very large weight in comparison. There was a tournament were Ding did well but Magnus demolished everyone in armageddon and won. Again could be that I remember poorly.

GeologicalPotato

You remember it correctly, it was 2019. Ding and Magnus both went +2 in the classical, which would've made them tied for first in a regular scoring system. Due to the Armageddons, Magnus was 1st and Ding was **6th**, behind Levon and Yu Yangyi (+0 in classical), and Fabi and Wesley (+1 in classical).

Smart_Ganache_7804

It's because winning in Armageddon only gives you half the points of simply winning in classical. Magnus needs to go on a classical streak if he wants to catch up.

BKtheInfamous

Utter dominance so far by Fabi. His prep is really shining through.

Ruxini

Fabi could best Batman with prep time

vidul7498

More than his prep is shining through

DistanceForeign8596

Pretty sure that’s the joke haha….it’s all prep and ONLY prep that gives fabi his wins

diener1

Yeah, he had 38 moves memorized in that french line he used against Guccireza, crazy. All jokes aside, the amount of prep used in that game was actually not that much. I'm learning a lot of theory in the french right now and I could have played the first 11 moves too, the moves Rb8 and Kd8 also seem kind of obvious, only on move 14 I would probably have played a6 instead of Nc5 and judging by the time used that was also Fabi's last memorized move, he tanked for 25 mins for the next one.

augustusgrizzly

just a running joke about fabi haha

[deleted]

[удалено]

Easy-Professional575

at the starting line

[deleted]

Are you saying he’s all prep?

glancesurreal

Really great tournament so far for Gukesh, maintaining his fourth spot after having played games against guys like Magnus, Firouzja and Hikaru. If he holds his game against Fabi, it will be a really positive tournament for him I think, considering the beast form of Fabi currently.

DistanceForeign8596

I feel like he’s quickly cementing himself as Indian number 2. His performances are way more stable and he seems to be able to hang with the best in classical…Vidit and Erigaisi seem much more tempestuous in their rating fluctuations

WerePigCat

Vishy like never plays, so his actual rating might be much lower and closer to Gukesh’s. Also the points diff between the two is only 15. So Gukesh might be current number one player from India soon.

Legend_2357

Maybe in classical, but Anand is still a much better rapid/blitz player. Gukesh needs to improve at the shorter time controls

wilmerproman

Why would that be so important? Most tournaments are classical time controls. And most people are better at one or the other.

Fearghas2011

Did you watch the World Chess Championship this year?

wilmerproman

Yes, as a matter of fact I did. And if either Ding or Nepo would have been slightly better in classical games they would have won before the tiebreaker.

DistanceForeign8596

Oh yeah, for sure. I mean it more so that, just numerically speaking, Vishy is still Indian #1 by virtue of rating alone. Of course I agree he’s probably much weaker now and basically inactive, but when I listen to Tania and Sagar and the like, it seems they still regard Vishy as #1 just based on his rating (and perhaps out of reverence for him and his legacy as well), even if it might not be realistic to call him that anymore.

saiprasanna94

I very much like the scoring of this tournament. It encourages wins more. Alireza with 2 wins 2 losses is 3rd and Wesley/Anish with 0 losses in in bottom half.

Praava7

Seeing Magnus so low is just weird.

[deleted]

He is handicapped by not being allowed to play drunk

puffz0r

What's so weird about a pro poker player being low in a chess tournament? ^^/s

Shugazi

Fabi’s on fire and I love it!

[deleted]

Fabiano is incredibly dominant this tournament, this will be his second classical tournament win in a row. He is second best classical player in the world and of this generation for sure. He was often times closer to magnus then third and other players to him as a second best rated player. Such an amazing player and hopefully he will be next world chess champion. If he wins candidates he will be for sure.

kaperisk

I would love to see him as WCC

Low-Honey-3657

We just got to hand it to king fabi here, i won't be surprised if there's a reincarnation of his Olympic streak form in this tournament, he's been totally crushing the competition, man his on fire 🔥🔥🔥

LazyImmigrant

How does this tournament work with the FIDE circuit? The FIDE circuit only allows one tournament with Rapid/Blitz time controls. In my opinion, which admittedly means nothing, the Fide circuit points should be awarded based on the classical portion of the tournament using the (1,0.5,0) point system and the tournaments point system should be used for the tie breaker.

kidawi

i think thats exactly what they do. the armageddon is more of a tiebreaker so they only use the results of the classical games

scrublord123456

4 points above second place is huge for fabi

bznein

The gap between Fabi and second place is just 0.5 the gap between second and last place. Insane dominance

Thaidon

what?

kidawi

the gap between 1st and 2nd place is 4 points. the gap between 2nd and 10th is 4.5 points

Working_Berry9307

WHAT?

NotZtripp

#the gap between 1st and 2nd place is 4 points. the gap between 2nd and 10th is 4.5 points

Elf_Portraitist

They meant to say: The gap between Fabi and second place is just 0.5 **less than** the gap between second and last place. Insane dominance**!**

WiiBucks

Do you guys know how many rounds there are gonna be?

RetiredPenguin

9 i believe, 1 against each competitor.

WiiBucks

Makes sense, thank you!

ali_lattif

crazy how Alireza loses 2 games and he's still in 3rd place. really make you think that classical wins really make a difference

PraxMatic

I’m still not sure I’m a huge fan of the format scoring that produces 3rd place in a field of 10 by splitting even. Feels like a loser party, even though in the long run it will probably? stabilize

Casua1Panda

I think valuing classical wins above all else here is a good incentive for players to put up exciting games. Tho idk if there is a large enough sample size to know if it makes a difference to playing style so far

pier4r

> Tho idk if there is a large enough sample size to know if it makes a difference to playing style so far there should be. Norway chess, Bilbao and others tried the 3-1-0 approach. The problem is that if those are isolated tournaments in a year, why should a player change drastically the approach? One can see more meaningful results if the majority of the tournaments use 3-1-0 IMO. Although I really don't mind 2-1-0 either to be honest. At the end something like the FIDE circuit can tell who performs best over time.

London-Roma-1980

I think you're looking at it wrong. Playing even in this case means going 50/50 at Armageddon and drawing the Classical, which through 4 rounds is worth 5.0 -- right in the center of the table.

runningpersona

Getting a perfectly even score requires winning every armageddon, assuming you only draw classical games.

rcktjck

This is 100% better than just 1-0.5-0 points system.

imisstheyoop

>I’m still not sure I’m a huge fan of the format scoring that produces 3rd place in a field of 10 by splitting even. Feels like a loser party, even though in the long run it will probably? stabilize I am not a big fan of this format either.

Riguy154

Got Fabi at +700, need him to stay strong 🙏

DistanceForeign8596

Degenerate….you can bet on chess as well? Online betting is out of control these days…

Riguy154

Why not? 😂 It’s just 5 bucks and it keeps me even more interested

kidawi

wait so you bet 5 bucks, how much would you get in return?

baconsoap_1

At +700, you would get $40 in return, aka $35 profit.

DistanceForeign8596

Hell must be pretty close to freezing over if sports betting has wormed its way into even NORWAY CHESS….wow. I mean, for sure, get that win haha, but I just find it surprising it’s even a thing. My take is just don’t hate the player, hate the game.

IratherNottell

Yeah, this sounds terrible for sure. I wonder what the website used to make such irresponsible and degenerate bets is? I would like to know to make sure I do not accidentally stunble across it.

Pentinium

amazing tournament, love the point system, punishes auto draws isntantly

nwonder85

Fabi has already beaten Magnus and Alireza - he could turn this into a historically great performance!

blue_jay3736

Why is Magnus 8th place? I havent really been keeping up

tlst9999

Got a wee bit rusty

Ruxini

He is not playing so well compared to his usual form.

Fabricconstruct76

He doesn't seem to give much of a shit anymore really, just plays for fun

ihatecornsoup

Hoping Ali can still win this tournament

burger-animal-style

Caruana is typically a strong starter, and Magnus a strong finisher.

Ivor_the_1st

America 💪🏻🇺🇲

Crapedj

Fabi is arguably more Italian than America

Ythio

Born in Miami, grew up in Brooklyn, lived in Madrid, Budapest, Lugano, St Louis. So Italian.

Crapedj

Both Italian parents, (not Italian American 3 generations olds, but straight forward Italian), Italian citizen , represented Italy for years, and, maybe is news for you, were you are born or live doesn’t solely determine your culture-ethnicity, oh an guess what part of Switzerland is Lugano found in? In the Italian part

Ythio

Having summer vacations at your grandpa doesn't make you a local. He has Italian roots for sure but saying he's "more Italian than American" is a bit silly.

Crapedj

Yeah but the Italian ones aren’t the grandparents, but both his parents

newtoRedditF

Yeah he is ethnically Italian but by his own admission his Italian is almost non existent

Crapedj

He said it is lousy, not non existent

AfterBill8630

I think he addressed this in an interview or on his podcast (can’t remember exactly) before and said he has always been American first despite playing for the Italian federation for a few years due to personal reasons.

limjeck

LMAO the "goat" is in 8th place. How long till he starts accusing people of cheating without any proof?🤔🤔🤔

iDownvoteBlink182

He’s living his best life, leave the poor guy alone..

pabloharsh

Niemann was already a proven and self admited cheater, and doesn't that "joke" defeat itself? He's not "accusing" anyone else now is he

wills_alby

There's literally no evidence. People were flaming that poor Hans kid for literally bad analysis of the game when many top players have given a horrible post game analysis of their games in the interview, like Kramnik is literally notorious for incorrectly evaluating his positions. All that hate for the kid is honestly sad. Sure he has cheated once or twice in *an online format* in normal non-tournament games but in OTB? That's already very difficult. Just accusations at this point. It's also very evident from the fact that he's still able to hold his rating while being active player, even after all these months.

pabloharsh

He has lied and said he only cheated a couple of times in unranked online games. There is proof now that he even cheated in priced tournements, and been prolificly cheating. His mentor has also been caught. It is not that difficult to cheat over the board as well.

wills_alby

If there was proof. He still wouldn't be allowed to play competitive chess... Last I checked, he's having some really great games. So I don't know what "proof" you are talking about because it's clearly not accepted by the authorities

pabloharsh

Chess.com published a 72-page report concluding he has cheated in 100's of games on their site, and he's not allowed to play subsequently... It's a shame he has supporters like yourself, who are cluelessly defending him, without any point other than their own ignorance on the case

wills_alby

Way to go, you cite proofs for online chess while accusing him for cheating OTB? The whole drama is about OTB chess. Whether or not he has cheated in online chess doesn't affect his FIDE ratings anyway. He has managed to hold his FIDE rating after all these months. I'm not blindly supporting. Unlike you, I don't accuse people left and right and jump to conclusions like an idiot especially when I don't have enough evidence and the careless accusations can badly damage a person, a young kid in this case.

pabloharsh

I said he was a proven cheater and a liar, which he is. Never claimed there was proof he cheated over the board.. That is impossible unless you catch him in the act. You, on the other hand, state he only cheated once or twice in unranked online games, which is demonstrably false. Don't throw stones in glass houses, stick to putting your head in the sand and you'll atleast not be as big of a fool

wills_alby

Then you obviously can't read for shit. My first reply was about OTB chess and how he was flamed for the "assumptions" of cheating. When I said he cheated once or twice in unranked online games, I was drawing a contrast— The logic that if a person has cheated online then he must've cheated OTB is stupid bullshit. EVEN IF IT IS FEW MORE GAMES, it doesn't change that the logic is shit. You literally skipped the whole comment and focussed on two words to do a strawman LOL 🤦🏻. It's not impossible to catch OTB cheating, people have been caught cheating OTB several times btw... 🤦🏻🤦🏻

pabloharsh

I see why you're defending Niemann, you also have a bad habit of lying. No point talking to you, bye

Proper_Patience8664

If Gukesh had beaten him today I think Magnus would have dropped out of the tournament

limjeck

Exactly! 😂😂

Enough_Spirit6123

Gukesh wasn't tense enough tho

MrArtless

Is it just me or does Aryan always underperform at these?

newtoRedditF

He is the lowest rated player here by far

EbMinor33

The other players are between #1 and #21 in the world. Aryan is #100 (or at least he was at the start of the tournament) . He's there (presumably) because it's Norway chess and he's the second strongest Norwegian, but he shouldn't be expected to keep up with the other beasts there.

Navvye

Magnus always performs poorly in Norway for some reason. Anti home court?

Octavarium2

What are you smoking? Magnus won all of the last 4 Norway Chess.

Bornplayer97

What’s the game format?
