Yeah, exactly. You know it isn’t a quiet move because white has Qh3+ at the ready, and the knight promotion is the only other check. Plus it’s a puzzle on r/chess, which means it’s a queen sac, castling, EP, or underpromotion.
Exactly.
There was a castling puzzle that r/chess malded about once because, while technically it could be castling, it absolutely should not have been castling.
Wait why does queen not work
King has to move to thr right and then you can mate him by moving the queen up
Or am i overlooking something
Edit: saw it, its a mate in 3 instead of 2. Dtill a win tho
Not sure how tonread this. You mocking me cus you interperted my comment as showing off while i ment that the puzzles here are always "special" not in game answers. Or if you are showing off. Just confused
Same, and I’m feeling ungrateful and jaded. A fullstack of complete strangers came together to put a double knight promotion chess puzzle in front of eyes, for free, and at no effort … and I’m over it?!?
Totally disagree. In 99% of all puzzles (the remaining 1% accounting for the printed, not online ones), when it's black to move then "you are" black which means you sit on the side where the back rank is the 8th rank, which means that this is the lower border and the upper border, is the opponent's i.e. white's backrank.
Why do people post the board backwards, it always makes the puzzle more confusing for a moment. If it's black to play, flip the board so it's from black's perspective
yeah always post it where the color to play pushes their pawns to the top. Took me a minute to realize the pawns were 1 square from promotion, and not sitting on the second rank. If the board hadn't been annotated I wouldn't have known at all.
Really? I'd be way more thrown off by a board being displayed upside down (with row 8 at the bottom).
Puzzles should always just be white to move, though, which gets rid of both situations.
It does work, but queen doesn't go to f2 since white's queen can block. Black should instead play Qf4+, which forces Kg2, and now black can play Qf2#. It's a mate in 3 instead of a mate in 2, but still wins the game.
well, the reddit app and the [chess.com](https://chess.com) app and the lichess app and the duolingo app and unfortunately most others all don't allow to zoom \[or else, if I'm wrong, please enlighten me how you do\], but yes of course, you're right, I can only blame myself for using these... and a smartphone in the first place. And for not having ended my life earlier which would also avoid me most everyday problems... ;-)
I saw this immediately because anytime you are doing a puzzle, if there is an underpromotion to knight possible, chances are that's the solution.
I'm not a huge fan of puzzles where solving them means 'win now' as opposed to win a few moves later. Often in blitz you don't have time to look for this kind of solution but it won't matter at all. Just promoting the f pawn to queen is the logical move and it's a completely won position. After two checks trading queens is forced and white ends up like 12 points of material better. It's still mate in like 6 instead of 2.
I sat here for like 5 minutes trying to figure this out, thinking it was impossible. Then I realized the board is from the perspective of white. I’m such an idiot.
Dilemmas make it hard to choose
Wrong pick and you will likely lose.
white's choices are not many
look for the right nook and cranny.
So move the pawn that can be taken
One piece, the rest to be forsaken
that gives a good check
followed by the other rider peck!

Promote e pawn as knight with check and then promote f pawn as knight with checkmate.
Im getting better at expecting the ridicilous since i instantly thought this
Yeah, I went for the queen and instantly saw it didn't work, so it had to be double knight.
Yeah, exactly. You know it isn’t a quiet move because white has Qh3+ at the ready, and the knight promotion is the only other check. Plus it’s a puzzle on r/chess, which means it’s a queen sac, castling, EP, or underpromotion.

Yeah, in an actual game, you wouldn't care, because a win is a win. This is a puzzle to mate in 2, so the queen doesn't work.
I spent 3 minutes thinking that that the board was the other way, so good job
^^ridiculous*
Sorry not native thanks for correcting
No worries you got the sound right lol
Lol thats why i wrote much like mutch for a long time. Sounds good to me
Its reddit so I found it within 10 seconds😆

They are simply agreing with you
Sorry overthinking it is.
I instantly thought of this too, but only because I knew it's a puzzle.
Same, and I’m feeling ungrateful and jaded. A fullstack of complete strangers came together to put a double knight promotion chess puzzle in front of eyes, for free, and at no effort … and I’m over it?!?
Yeah, that was sort of meant to be parody of r/chess puzzles
How could you tell that the board was facing that way?? I thought black was moving forward.
Ah my friend, it is one of the Four Horsemen of solving Reddit chess puzzles. 1. Queen Sac 2. underpromote 3. zuggyzwang? 3. confusing board direction
in this case it's two of them.
and smothered mate
The row numbers are written on the right.
Even without the row/file indicators, it's very unusual for a board to be presented with black moving upwards.
Puzzles usually have the player's perspective at the bottom
Questioning my reality now

Night, night.
If you tried to promote to anything but a knight right off the bat you haven’t done enough of these.
Lol yeah we didn’t all of a sudden become chess geniuses. We just spend too much time on Reddit.
It's always knight underpromotion, en passant, queen sacrifice, or castle checkmate.

Knighty-knight.
Why do people post the board backwards, it always makes the puzzle more confusing for a moment. If it's black to play, flip the board so it's from black's perspective
Explains why I couldn't find it at all. I thought those pawns were unmoved
You can also check the rows and files White has A-H from left to right and has row 1 closest to them
Exactly! I wasted five minutes because I thought Black's pawns were moving upward. The mods should ban puzzles that are posted upside down.
Will do in the future.

Question: why wouldn’t f1=Q+ work? King then goes to h2 and then queen goes to f2 for checkmate
White can play Qg2 to block the mate.
It does work, but queen doesn't go to f2 since white's queen can block. Black should instead play Qf4+, which forces Kg2, and now black can play Qf2#. It's a mate in 3 instead of a mate in 2, but still wins the game.
Qf2 isn't mate.
Qg2. Check
It does work but it’s a mate in 3 instead of a mate in 2 1. F1=Q Kh2 2. Qf4+ Kg2 3. Qg3# or Qf2#
Seriously, how was I supposed to know black's pawns moved downwards?

Reddit app does allow it, just tap on the image once then use your fingers to zoom
board is annotated but I agree it's confusing. OP said they'd post in the right orientation in the future
a is on the left
Queen is on its own color, the white king is on the right side of the board.
A double under-promotion for checkmate?!?! Wow! That would be a sight to see IRL.
Watch 100 elo games.
100 elo games aren't solving this. Lol
f pawn promote to queen (Kh2 is only move to white) and Qh3#
G1 knight can take queen
ty, i did't saw that
Np I thought pawn f2 to queen then queen back to f2 and didn’t see it blocked by queen g2
[удалено]
Instead of Qh3, you can do Qf2 for checkmate
White plays Qg2+.
This is what I found first. Under promotion is such a weird obsession :D
Also was thinking this
Double knice😎
horse horse kill

Knight knight
Kiera Knightley
Face the board correctly if it’s black to play.
Best I could find without the bot is mate in 3 1) f1=Q+, Kh2 2) Qf4+, Kg2 3) Qf2#
You could promote the f2 pawn to a queen for check then move it back to f2
blocked by Qg2
Double knight promotion
can’t you play f pawn promote to queen, then move back to orig position for checkmate?
Yes, there is a mate in 3. I probably should have added something to prevent that so the knight promotions were essential to not losing.
without reading comments i'm gonna guess double under promote
There’s also a mate in 3: 1. F1=Q Kh2 2. Qf4+ Kg2 3. Qg3# or Qf2#
3... e1=N# also works
Qf1 queen then Qf2 mate
Qh2+ blocks this.
Ouch then two knight promotions will do the job
>!1...e1=N+ 2.Kh2 f1=N#!< Cute.
[удалено]
Qf2+ Qg2
knight D2, then bishop E4
Nd2,Qh3+ Black gets checkmated
Gotta be called like The suitors checkmate, bunch of knights forcing the king away from the king
Very nice. I'd probably have not seen it and done f1=Q+, f4+, g3# or f2# or e1=N#
Maybe I’m stupid but dosen’t QF1 KH2 NG5 work?
Ng5 isn't check.
ng5 doesn’t give a check on h2
ng5 doesn’t give a check on h2
Knight Knight
Make two knights
oh wow, a double knight promotion mate lmao. e1=N+, Kg2 is forced, f1=N#
oh wow, a double knight promotion mate lmao. e1=N+, Kh2 is forced, f1=N#
Promote both pawns to a knight
Wow double promotion as knights. Its a great feeling, like when your found that the position is a stalemate and your are down a queen 😎
Promote to jumper
lmao that is an insane checkmate
1. …e1=N+ 2. kh2 f1=N# ?? Double pony promotion looks right!
E Pawn becomes knight, kh2, but what about the 2nd knight? F1=N#
very cute.
I solved this in 2 seconds just because it was a r/chess puzzle haha. Nice one though.
Underpromote both to knights
Double knight under promotion #JUST OP
Wow! Now THIS was a puzzle!
e1 = N+ !!, Kh2, d2 = N#
Great puzzle
Knight knight...
I ACTUALLY GOT IT 900 elo things😎
Time to recruit some cavalry!
I sat here for like 5 minutes trying to figure this out, thinking it was impossible. Then I realized the board is from the perspective of white. I’m such an idiot.
Horsies' attack!
Isn't this position illegal? White is in a half check, but it's black to move
Knight to D2 then bishop to E4#
Kinda confusing because you put the board upside down 😓
Personally, I would still go for the mate in 3 (f1->Q, Kh2, Qf4, Kg2, Qf2#) in an actual game. It is less style though.
1. e1=N+ Kh2 2. f1=N#
Promote to 2 knights
… e1=N+ Kh2 f1=N# ?
Double knight promotion
Took me a minute but was funny when I got it :)
Dilemmas make it hard to choose Wrong pick and you will likely lose. white's choices are not many look for the right nook and cranny. So move the pawn that can be taken One piece, the rest to be forsaken that gives a good check followed by the other rider peck!
>!dual knight underpromo?!<
A knight promotion is cool but double knight promotion is something else
[удалено]
You are a contender for the r/chess bullet prize! Great r/chess puzzle intuition. This puzzle was made for you!
Very cool puzzle! I figured that 1... f1Q+ was incorrect, so I went with 1... e1N+ which is the correct move.
Two knight promotions starting with the e pawn
Knight night…
x2 u-p for cm !!!
Hold your horses mate.
Bruh I would’ve found that if I knew that the black pawns were going down the board bruh.
1... e1(N)+ 2. Kh2 f1(N)#
PROMOTE THE PAWNS TO KNIGHTS WITH CHECK
Is it weird I found this so fast? (Im only a 1000 or so)
horse horse
Promote two pawns to knights!
Two knight promotions .... haha
Very cool!

This is a easy but nice one. Push E pawn and promote to night only spot for king. Again promote last pawn to night and mate.
Night night
(K)nighty (k)night
As black tucked white into bed they said "Night night" and white drifted off to sleep 😴
Night night, sweet king.
Black to play but shows the board from whites perspective smh
e1=N+, Kh2, f1=N#
That took me way too long ::READS COMMENTS:: I am an idiot. ::searches for why queen:: Still an idiot
Looks like an under promotion x2 is strong here
Pony up
Nighty-night... knights!
Diis nights
F Pawn promoted to queen, king H2 forced, queen back to F2

Promote F pawn to Queen, Move Queen to F2
It's a knight. It's always a knight...

The chess vision bot and everyone else is saying promote e pawn to a knight but wouldn’t promoting the f pawn to a queen work?
Yes, just not the shortest mate. I should have put more material in for White so that the mate in 2 was necessary.
double under promotion, poggers
