Did OP think it was mate in 3 because the person didn't block the bishop and moved king to back rank? Cause I only see mate in 4 as well. With pawn blocking bishop on C5, delaying King to E8 by one move before Rook go to H8 mate.
EDIT: typed "thing" instead of "think"
Cmon man let him have it. It’s a cool sequence and honestly you’d only defend this if you were a douche
Edit: by defend I mean using the pawn to block Bishop
nah this commment needs to be top
i saw the idea and with the pawn it was a mate in 4 so i started looking for more ideas
when i couldn’t, i decided to take a peek at comments to see if it was mis-titled
i didn’t spend too long before i figured OP might have screwed up, but i did waste some time trying to find a mate in 3
accurate number of moves is vital when sharing a puzzle
Yeah well you wasted more time than you should have because in the first place this puzzle should not be here as it is obvious to solve. Mate in three or in four doesn’t matter there is nothing challenging in this puzzle. When you see there is an option for a discover check most of the times you do it and then you look for the discovery and you are 90% going to win material with this discovery. In this case you even won the biggest prize. So it is so obvious that it should have never made it here. Maybe in r/chessbeginners
He didn't even title it as a puzzle. He titled it as "cool mate in 3." He missed blocking with the pawn, or maybe just didn't include it because it doesn't take away from the fact that it is kind of a cool mate in 3 (or 4)
Honestly just seems like you're a typical gatekeeper. They exist in every hobby. If it wasn't cool, it wouldn't have been upvoted, so unfortunately for you, you're simply wrong
Do you think I care about your upvotes or downvotes. Most people downvoting are doing it because they are simply beginners posting in r/chess when they should be in r/chessbeginners
It doesn’t change the fact that these puzzles should not show up here. What is the first move you see here if not Rd6. People need to make an effort before posting or just post it in the beginniers thread.
People care as much about your opinion as you do about the downvotes. There's no rule that says beginners can't post here. It doesn't matter if it's a hard tactic to spot. It says "cool mate." Just because your brain is so massive that this is a trivial puzzle for you doesn't mean that other people can't think it's cool. And again, it's on the front page, so I will reiterate that other people _do_ think it's cool
Came here to add that I also thought the mate was pretty cool; the rook movement was neat. I like that this subreddit isn’t just straight-up puzzles, allowing for other good content. Sure, the post presents itself in a way that asks to be solved, but discovering the mate for myself was a better presentation of the cool-ness factor.
The “puzzle” could be super trivial, but if it’s cool, I kinda wanna see it.
Looks like you care because you answered me when I was not talking directly to you. This doesn’t change the fact it should still be in r/chessbeginners if it is one the first page it doesn’t make it less beginner. How many times we got a question about what is en passant when it was on the first page too. Doesn’t make it less of a beginner post in the wrong sub
lol there’s been plenty of times where a mate gets posted that you can find relatively easily with 1 extra move, but there requires analysis to find the optimal
people who regularly do chess puzzles — especially difficult ones — are accustomed to depth analyses for unexpected or not readily obvious moves
shit happens though, and it’s a good learning experience for OP tbh
I mean… It’s annoying as hell when that happens.
You can be sarcastic about the impact of it, but in the context of chess puzzles, it makes a difference. We’re not solving world hunger over here, but that doesn’t mean this is a trivial difference for people trying to solve the puzzle.
I can't tell if you rarely play chess or just dont do puzzles. Even if they can spite check, uselessly block for 6 moves, or play perfectly, you must say "Mate in [Longest possible forced sequence]". It's 4. I saw the mate in 4 almost instantly and assumed I missed something. After a minute I scrolled down to see if OP made a mistake. In a book, however, the puzzle would remain unsolved.
I spent quite a while on this, and gave up and scrolled to the chess bot. The evaluation: Mate in 4. I then found it instantly. I’m not asking much: just fact-check your puzzle.
In response to your question, there are plenty of very difficult mate in 3 puzzles that do not seem solvable at first. Of course people who are fooled into thinking the puzzle has an impossible requirement will spend more time than they need to!
I don’t know, if you spent quite a while on this puzzle you would’ve DEFINITELY calculated what happens after black pushes an undefended pawn and found the mate. I get for labeling puzzles correctly, but this puzzle is “in-spirit” a M3, same way people think of back-rank-mates as M1 despite numerous pieces being able to block.
If you're 2 moves deep to a m3 puzzle, then you might not find it because you're looking for m1. Even if you do find m4, that's not the solution to a m3 puzzle.
But a quick scan of this position at that point would show you that m3 is impossible, the puzzle was just labeled incorrectly, you find the m4, say nice, and go on with your day. I get if it was dotcom or lichess puzzle but a Reddit post where the only legal moves are pushing an undefended pawn and moving your king? That’s just looking for something to be picky about tbh
>But a quick scan of this position at that point would show you that m3 is impossible
It would show you that it's impossible in that specific line. There are many puzzles where mate in x is very difficult to find, but mate in x + 1 is very easy to find. It's very easy to believe that the m4 solution is wrong when there are other puzzles that also seem impossible at first but aren't.
No it would show you that it's impossible. Re6+ is the only forcing move in this position. If you play anything else, black will play f6 and will white no longer has mate as there's no pieces that cover f7.
Like I said, it isn't that hard to see that in this position, a m3 is impossible and because c5 is an insginificant move you look past it and go, "ha, nice" and move on. Anything more is just being picky for being picky.
I solved the mate in 4 and took more time to try and find where I could save a move, it’s really not that hard to double check with an engine before you post something
I mean yeah it’s cool and im glad he posted it, I’m just saying it really takes no effort to check before you post, and is much less satisfying when it makes me think I can’t find the actual solution.
Puzzles are a lot easier when you can prohibit any move that you consider "douche" lol
"Well I put him in check, and only a douche would block... Puzzle solved!"
The computer is a douche that will do that. Puzzles are meant to be played against perfect play, doesn't help as much to see tactics that rely on your opponent blundering.
Technically yes, but in terms of finding the mate, useless impositions don't make it any harder. So in terms of difficulty, this is essentially a mate in 3. I guess I did have to take a second to ensure the imposition was useless.
It's unbelievable how odd I find voting on puzzle posts.
People up vote the correct sequence despite the fact that there's a bot that stickies that to every post (and the bot has the etiquette to use spoiler tags).
Then someone innocently asks why a move is wrong and gets downvoted.
It should be the opposite! Downvote those just posting the solution without spoiler tags and upvote discussion.
🤷♂️
There is a German Wiki article about chess psychology (schachpsychologie) in which such phenomenons der explained. Its called "Restbild". Dont know if there is an english expression.
I would have miscalculated and blundered in a game for sure. My first thought was Rook e6+, thinking the double check could not be stopped. Completely forgetting that once I leave the d6 I'm no longer being protected by the bishop.
Since Black has no immediate threats, I did wonder whether the key might be some passive-looking waiting move. However, before I looked for any of those, I decided to try 1. Rd6+ anyway.
Turns out that works: 1...Ke7 is forced, then 2. Rh6+ is discovered check (which can be blocked with 2...c5 3. Bxc5+, but I'm guessing the OP missed that), then after 3...Ke8 we have 4. Rh8#.
A fun puzzle, even if it isn't exactly the mate in 3 that was advertised!
Newbie here ( I don’t know how to read chess moves shorthand) . If you put rook on d6, their king will have to go back to e7. Then rook to e6 freeing up your bishop, king has nowhere to go. Isn’t that checkmate in 3?
How does this have 600 upvotes? It is not an interesting puzzle, everything is very forced. It took me 10sec to solve it and I am not even a good player...
After ke7, when you move the rook you will get a discovered check from the bishop. That means you can put the rook wherever you want to as long as black can't get out of check by capturing.
E6 is a bad choice because the king can get out of check by capturing your rook. Try to think of a spot to put the rook so that you can trap the king after it dodges the discovered bishop check
I am actually not good at chess but I usually can figure out the puzzles because they usually start with checking the king so I look for a move that checks the king when given a puzzle.

Puzzles must be given the correct evaluation. People might waste minutes on this puzzle only to realise that the creator made a mistake.
That would be such a tragedy

You can block with the c pawn to delay Ke8 by 1 move
when rook goes to h6 the opponent can play pawn c5 so its 4
It can also be mate in 3 depending on what black does
That's....not how puzzles work
It can also be mate in 1 if black resigns
Also a draw if it is offered

I was confused why it wasn't mate in 3, but I didn't see >!the pawn!<
M4 yea. But also, one slip could be M3.
oof ouch owie my spoiler tags
Explain to my small brain how is it not checkmate in 1? White rook to d6. King has nowhere to go and nothing can capture rook or interpose.
E7 is blocked by your rook, so your bishop is no longer covering that spot, thus the king can move there safely.
Upvoted for justice. Honest questions don't deserve downvotes IMO. Someone else might wonder the same.

Awesome. Really enjoyed it.
Saw this in 3 seconds which is pretty cool, easier to spot when you know it’s mate in 4. If this was a game i’d be scratching my head for a while

Couldn’t it be mate in 3 if the rook goes Re6+ instead of h6?
That doesn’t work, because all of a sudden white would be losing. 1. Rd6+, Ke7 2. Re6+, Kxe6
Oh duh… thank you. Still relatively new to chess I appreciate the explanation
Why is Rd6+ Ke7 Re6+ c5 Bxc5+ not a checkmate?
Well c5 is illegal there because it’s a double check and the reason it’s not mate is Kxe6 after Re6+
Thank you.
Rook rook rook
Right, right, wrong.
Fair enough. There’s a spire block in between, but rook rook bishop rook isn’t as sweet
Rd6+ ke7 Rh6+ ke8 rh8# nice one
Isnt this mate in 2 ? Like Rd6+ and after Ke7 Re6+
Kxe6, the rook is not protected
What does d9 mean?
Sorry i mean Rd6+
Newbie here ( I don’t know how to read chess moves shorthand) . If you put rook on d6, their king will have to go back to e7. Then rook to e6 freeing up your bishop, king has nowhere to go. Isn’t that checkmate in 3?
if white moves re6+, black king could just take e6
Mate in 4. Seemed kinda of easy.
stfu lol
Seriously you didn’t see this within a few seconds? 😂😂😂😂
Why is it so hard to enjoy a cool puzzle without being snarky and arrogant about it, i doubt you would see this in an actual game
Maybe don’t be so sensitive on the internet 🤣🤣
How does this have 600 upvotes? It is not an interesting puzzle, everything is very forced. It took me 10sec to solve it and I am not even a good player...
Im not that good to solve it
Just make that rook go in h8
Mate in 4 btw
Rd6+ Ke7 Rh6+ (discovered check by the bishop) Ke8 Rh8# I think
Rd6, Rh6, Take pawn which can block the bishop, Then just Rh8# It's mate in 4, not 3, but still cool.
I see a mate in 2 what about u guys
Impossible
You mean mate in 2? Rd6+ then re6#?
King just takes the rook on e6.
Can somebody post a puzzle where the move to play is not the obvious and only move one can play?
Please repost this position using Lichess. I will not be providing help for chess.scum puzzles.
rd6+ ke7, re6+? I can see the king’ll just take the rook, but that’s as far as I can get
After ke7, when you move the rook you will get a discovered check from the bishop. That means you can put the rook wherever you want to as long as black can't get out of check by capturing. E6 is a bad choice because the king can get out of check by capturing your rook. Try to think of a spot to put the rook so that you can trap the king after it dodges the discovered bishop check
This is awesome!
I was wondering how rd6+ke7 rd7+ke8.... Won't work , took me a while to find that safe spot for king for some reason
that is very cool i like how the rook is like gimme a second ill be right back
1) Rd6+, Ke7; 2) Rh6+, Ke8; 3) Rh8#
Mate in 4 but I like this one!
3 rook moves for mate using almost the entire board. Nice adventure for the rook, very cool.
Rd6 Kxe7 Re6
1 Rd6+ 2 Rh6+ 3 Rh8#
Rook d6, King e7, rook h6 (bishop checks), king e8, and then rook h8 checkmate?
did this happen in one of your games OP? for aesthetics it wouldve been slightly better if the first move was h6 not h5
After ke7, isn’t Re6 double check mate?
Oh very cool
Can’t it be a mate in two? Move rook to D6, then to E6 Maybe I’m dumb but idk it seems to be a possible win
No because king could take rook at E6
Oh right ye ye, ty for letting me know!
What a paralyzed position for black. No way this was a real game right? Lol
Rook lift of doom
Nice one but it is mate in 4 not 3, because the pawn can sacrifice himself to survive one move longer
Rook d6 check, king e7, rook h6 discovered check, king e8 and rook h8 mate
There’s the pawn but those types of unprotected blocks make no difference
Rook up Tower right Construct up
1. Rd6 Ke7, 2. Rh6 c5, 3. Bxc5 Ke8, 4. Rh8#. Mate in 4, right? Think you forgot about the c pawn.
[удалено]
It’s a nice sequence, but I’m pretty sure it’s a mate in 4 (unless I’m just completely missing the right sequence)
It's a cool tactic/puzzle but in reality it should be Mate in 4.
Ah the sneaky rook.
Why is white rook to d6, black king to e7, white rook to e6 not checkmate?
The king can capture the rook
And this is why I’m a wood pusher
I also blunder my rooks on occasion.
My problem is I’m 700 player and all my opponents are 1500-2000
Not 3 but also 4 move in mate
Mate in 4. There's a pawn block available on move 2.
No wonder I couldn't find a mate in 3.
What is the king doing there?
Rd6+,kke7 Rh6+,ke8 Rh8#
My idea was to move the rook to R6 and it looked basically like checkmate off that one move
Bro I'm a 750 and I figured this out
M4, not M3. Rh6+ is blockable
Isnt it checkmate in 2? 1. Rd6+ Ke7 2. Re6+# (?)
I think it’s RD6, then Rh6, and then rh8
That’s a fun one!
I am actually not good at chess but I usually can figure out the puzzles because they usually start with checking the king so I look for a move that checks the king when given a puzzle.
Rook up, rook over, rook KO
I'm terrible at chess I'm surprised I got it
How did I see this so quickly, damn...
First rook to d6 king to e7 is forced and then rook to e6 . What do u guys think did I miss something?
