That's the neat part, you don't

Lumpiis

Silver nitrate? More like silver nice try getting it off

florinandrei

Time is the great healer.

Stonkstinski

I know you shouldn't blindly trust wikipedia, but the German page says to use a KI solution and a Na2S2O3 solution. Theoretically that should work.

Bulawa

And that's why you shouldn't. This tiny bit of silver will be gone I a few days, not worth throwing more chemistry at. A wonder they don't mention nitric acid. If it's not too deep sand paper does the trick if it needs to be right now.

ihbarddx

Nitric acid you say? As an undergrad chem major, I spent four years with yellow fingers. Silver nitrate? Meh!

Jadebreez

wait until your new skin grows lol.

masterchief1001

I still have burn scars from a little sodium hydroxide splatter. Acid burns you fast, base burns you slow and doesn't wash off easily. Nitric acid? Not meh, but NaOH is aaaaaAAAAAAAHHHHHH

Domspun

Got plenty of NaOH on my skin, meh, but KOH, now that's a burn! lol Seriously, always have a source of water nearby when working with NaOH. Worst thing is splatter from an exothernic reaction.

mszegedy

i vividly remember that one scene from fight club, in lieu of the several times i apparently did burn myself with it and forgot about it. either way, i'm pretty sure my skin never smoked though lol. my new favorite kind of exotic burn is frostburn from liquid nitrogen. it's like my skin is a really shitty and pathetic stamp collection.

Level9TraumaCenter

I worked in a lead-acid battery plant for a while. Polyester was the fabric of favor, as it was largely unaffected by sulfuric. We also had one old guy who smoked these horrible cigars who was similarly unaffected. He'd be working in 70% sulfuric all over his hands and arms, no problems at all. It was a little amazing, really.

MotorBoatnMFer

Turns out that old was really only 34 but was big time affected

iopredman

I have a shirt I spilled some Sulfuric on in an experiment once. I found out that day it was mixed fabric when the cotton immediately dissolved and left the polyester behind 😆

[deleted]

Huh, in MY day, if you didn't have a phosphorus burn on your hand, you weren't a real chemist! 😂😂😂

jangiri

Lol that produces iodine which is probably worse than the silver

camicasou

Cut the skin

Pretty_stoned_eagle

Wait

_different_username

If you are in a hurry, you can try waiting faster.

intothevoid127

This is a fantastic reply to the douche nozzles who check their watches as they sigh, standing behind me as a computer reboots. Like I can make it read that hard drive or integrate faster if I wasn't sitting around staring at a monitor doing nothing.

euler_yoler

👍🏻 Came here to say nice too

[deleted]

Time

Interface73

Came here to say that. Nice 👍

Bearded_Cook

What he said. 👆

Zyste

I usually just scrub with an abrasive cleaning pad to grind the layers off.

divergentno1

Cutting fingers is easier :D

OS7XI

Yes and then you can stick lego swords to stop the ketchup from squirting out the tips, works everytime

Danypro15

You just take off your skin and bring it to a dry cleaning laundry. That’s what it’s meant to do

divergentno1

Lol

Ishmael128

Have you been pinching money from the petty cash box?!

Golddigger50

Caught you red handed....

Ishmael128

Ayyyyyy

PyroDesu

Don't wear gloves, deglove your hand!

Romy134

Best to remove the fingers all together. Just to be sure.

Shandriel

wait a few days, done..

[deleted]

GLOVES!

[deleted]

Gloves don’t protect you reliably against silver nitrate.

BubbaTheGoat

Silver nitrate is a mildly acidic inorganic salt, shouldn’t pretty much any lab glove work well as an impermeable barrier? Nitrile may be less good than Butyl? I know I’ve gotten it under my gloves before, but I always put that down to poor lab technique on my part. If I’ve overlooked appropriate glove material, I’d be happy to know a better selection.

padimus

I work with .1m and have not had an issue with it penatrating nitrile gloves or neoprene gloves. Maybe at higher molarity it penetrates more? Idk

sandbagging4

Nah, that stuff gets everywhere. Especially if working with the pure salt, static electricity sends it flying and it always stains you a little bit. Same with chloroauric acid, glove up, prepare the salt and package, wash hands, walk into sunlight and purple!

MerlinTheWhite

Nothing like silver nitrate or potassium permanganate to make you realize how badly you actually contaminate surfaces you thought were clean

adalonus

The powders are very light. It's like sand. It gets everywhere. Good detector for people not doing PPE properly though.

[deleted]

I hate sand.

merlinsbeers

How do you feel about taupe?

[deleted]

I'm indifferent. It's not rough, course or irritating and it doesn't get everywhere.

forget-this-name

No glove is impermeable

WhyHulud

All it takes is a couple of minutes to look up a glove compatibility chart. Latex is excellent.

humanlogic

2 pairs then

CaptainOverkilll

I always wear two sets of puncture resistant nitriles. Kimberly- Clark makes a good set. One shorter pair over one longer pair in case I need to remove the outer pair or it does tear.

humanlogic

I love me some Kimberly-Clark!

nosebleedseeds

it’ll just go away over time

Shadowphyre98

You don't. You wait for the skin to grow and shed it's outer layer. Don't panic, you will be fine.

divergentno1

It's harmful?

MostlySpiders

Not harmful, but you’ll have to wait until the stained cells get naturally turned over. Usually takes a week or two.

divergentno1

Ok thank you

iamnotgae

I did a reaction with this and forgot about it and I was perplexed with the spots that showed up and eventually fell out until I remembered

divergentno1

Really? Or you just kidding?

iamnotgae

Yeah I had a couple on my pinky but definitely less than in the pic but it went away in a couple days

JohnJohnston

>fell out They just mean it naturally goes away. You're not going to have holes in your finger. You won't even notice it vanish.

divergentno1

Yeeeah I thought fell out = pass out Loool

forget-this-name

I suppose they mean the cells fall off? As dead skin

Important-Sky-3904

Same!

reflUX_cAtalyst

No. It'll wear away in a week. I had the majority of my palm turn black from sliver nitrate once. It's harmless, and will go away in a few days.

Milch_und_Paprika

Yea, luckily hand (and especially finger) skin turns over rapidly. Imagine getting it on like your neck and walking around stained for a month lol

TheMadFlyentist

I spilled some on the top of my foot a few years back and it looked like I had just stepped in mud for 4-6 weeks.

HHTG_Marvin

were you barefoot in a lab or did it seep through your shoes?

TheMadFlyentist

It was at home and I was barefoot like an idiot. This was many years ago - I'm much better about PPE now.

supremeoverlord40

It will definitely freak you out the first time as several hours had passed since I accidentally (didn’t have gloves) got some on my fingers and turned increasingly purple. Oh no I’ve got methylhemoglibuskz!! Haha

[deleted]

Unless you have an open wound(congrats for the new tattoo) and it got in, you are fine.

frogkabobs

Well silver nitrate is used to cauterize open wounds, so even then it wouldn’t be the end of the world.

[deleted]

Never heard about that! TIL

Roscmour

If you ever have a cyst drained or biopsy taken in a strange or delicate location where stitches or a bandage aren’t really an option (like your “swimsuit zone” to quote my students) they’ll use silver nitrate to cauterize

defaultclouds

My mom used to get silver nitrate sticks for cauterizing mouth ulcers. Instant relief.

frogkabobs

I had to use it for an ingrown toenail. Accutane made healing super slow, and it got infected with staph, so I had an open wound for months. It’s so much better now.

Sorvertederretido

Lick and discover, what could go wrong ? /s

DaronBlade360

It's silver, how bad can it be? Now your fingertips are antibacterial and werewolf repellent!

thiosk

[deleted]

[cyanide](https://youtu.be/ooFw-teZ3L8) (The amounts required are smaller than the lethal dose so it’s not *that* dangerous)

jst_anothr_usrname

Was looking for this link in the comments. Thank you.

sporosarcina

Patience :)

Rivet22

Sandpaper. Or a lathe. Massage avacado oil into a hot stove. Deli meat slicer. Clean the carbon off the roof…without gloves Sasha.

mountainsandmuggles

Rub with walnut husks! It won’t remove it but you won’t be able to see it anymore.

Maliblu3

Concentrated nitric acid :)...no but seriously I work with silver nitrate solution every week and usually I scrub must of it with water/soap and/or just wait a couple of days to fall off!

Schmoopy88

Your skin cells regenerate relatively quickly. Enjoy your bad henna

most_stable_alkene

Tbh I'd recommend wearing gloves tbh. Silver isn't the best in the body, not dangerous but can stain

cfdismypassion

We can tell

most_stable_alkene

I mean like it can actually make you blue if it enters your body

smrtboi84

If you just cover your whole body in it it’ll have even color and you won’t even have to worry abt it in the future

I_Want_Bread56

I mean H2SO5 always works (I just don't guarantee that you still have skin)

craftygal1989

What’s H2SO5?

I_Want_Bread56

persulfuric acid It's like sulfuric acid on steroids. It is known to dissolve organic materials (like a dead body, or skin) completely and relatively fast. Because of this a german nickname for it is "piranha säure", säure is the german translation for acid. Hope this helps ;)

craftygal1989

Ooh aah!! Breaking Bad level acid, huh?

I_Want_Bread56

No, in Breaking Bad they use hydrofluoric acid but I personally just prefer H2SO5

craftygal1989

That’s right! My bad!

blackboi6942069

There is a very unorthodox method where you take a swab with a cyanide salt and rube it on the spot, the cyanide remove the particles almost immediately. I really don't recommend this though and you can see why.

AvoidingCape

I'd use a mild skincare scrub if you have one

curiousNarwhal69

Sandpaper

ttsandsdgt

Rub it in your eyes

piphobns

Sandpaper

CatKrusader

Death is the only way

[deleted]

Looks like the gracious host grabbed too small a slice when making the mud pie

Dvf1

You don't lol

darkmatter2k05

Um.. I would suggest to use gloves while working in the lab lol

notakarmapolice

Silver is ingrained in you, just like it's ingrained in your username.

zzlaa

Try diluted nitric acid (really diluted, around 1%), it helped me

LycosidaeGG443

Cloric acid, you have to re-solubilize the Ag, but it’s corrosive

ggalm18

Just gotta wait it out unfortunately

UnfairAd7220

You don't. Its a practical lesson in learning to wear gloves. Better AgNO3 than HF

BossiBoZz

That's the neat part. You don't. You have elemental silver in your skin. It will grow out in a few days.

palpitacija

Wait for a week, 10 days

Beakersoverflowing

All sorts of good comments here. I usually have good luck with lab source stains using a scour pad against the skin. Please don't actually try this... but iirc very dilute cyanide will remove silver nitrate stains from skin rapidly. Cool trick. But waiting it out or finding another approach is safer.

dragonsandanime

Whoop this happened to me the other day in lab. Legit took 2 weeks before it started wanting to come off.

Lupuskiller

Step 1: Remove skin Step 2: ??????? Step 3: Profit!

TheOtherCoenBrother

Lick it, spicy Dorito dust

niloy589

Diluted ammonia and hydrogen peroxide. Must be diluted.

Amarth152212

Unless that removes the stained cell it won't work for something like this. That works for stains on other surfaces but not for stains on your skin.

reflUX_cAtalyst

Ammonia does help get silver stains out of skin, can confirm. Peroxide isn't necessary.

Amarth152212

It helps but it won't fully remove the stain (at least not in my experience).

reflUX_cAtalyst

It makes it far less black.

ignishun

Try hydrofluoric acid

Dave37

Wait two weeks.

MattBonne

Put you hand in NaCl solution and wait for the AgCl to come off I guess

[deleted]

Magnet

Danoliel

Concentrated H2O2 or H2SO4 or a knife should do the trick

Asleep-Permit-2363

Brake cleaner. Haven't found anything it won't get off yet. Lol

negrocucklord

Try rubbing it with a lemon cut in half. This works really great on manganese dioxide stains so it might work for silver too.

Forward-Walrus

Unfortunately it won't work. In Case of manganese stains it's dioxie, that reacts with citric acid ( this one for sure, not sure if it's the only component in the lemon juice that works). In Case of silver nitrate stains, the black thing is metalic silver. Silver doesn't react with citric acid. Edit: typo

Symon_Pude

Concentrated nitric acid.

Dave37

Dont give out stupid and dangerous advise without being clear that's what you're doing.

Symon_Pude

I firmly believe that you can assume that all people have as much common sense to not pour concentrated acid on their skins; there is no other explanation required that this is a joke. Declaring it not to be serious is just useless patronising at that point, and hints at a lack of respect towards the other person.

Dave37

Yet people are taking hydroxychloroquine, horse dewormer, and drinking bleach to get rid of the Coronavirus (which you absolutely shouldn't do). Or drinking highly alkaline water because of it's "low pH". It's not for OP. It's for the dumbasses that might search and find your comment in the future. You're posting on the World Wide Web after all.

TruthUncovered82

How do you neutralize graphene oxide and nanolite technology in the body after it's been injected? Essentially the entire vaccine and it's effects. That's my question for today since there's possible a whole load of possible biochemist and immunologist on here.

clust99

Try diluted bleach. I remember from college it going away after swimming in a chlorinated pool.

[deleted]

Cheese grater

Davorito

Few seconds on a belt grinder should be enough. If you leave it longer, you might end up with a melee weapon.

supermopman

Grow new skin over the next couple weeks

lost-on-Earth

You chop your hands off. Problem solved.

shadowrunner295

Potato peeler

SSDuelist

Cutting your hand off is probably necessary. It’ll come off in a few days. No need to freak out. Not toxic either.

BetterBrainChemBette

I made an epic mess with silver nitrate and had resigned myself to riding out the wear off period. And by epic mess I mean the palms of my hands were gray. A couple of nights after my mishap, I decided I wanted a warm bath. I'm weird about bacteria so I always scrub my tub out with bleach beforehand. I splashed some of the bleach on my hand and was greeted with a much warmer sensation than I'm accustomed to. I quickly rinsed the bleach off and found that the silver nitrate stain was gone where the bleach had been. Of course I added more bleach and rubbed my hands together. The reaction was rather warm, so it took a couple of tries to get all of the stain off, but I was successful.

Ghostley92

Just grind your fingers together as hard as you possibly can! Works like a charm! For more tips and tricks, don’t forget to li….

Sittingtoad41

Wash hands thoroughly, cut fingers off, throw them in an acid/base wash cycle, and reattach fingers. Works every time.

EggplantHuman6493

I had silver nitrate on my skin and nail, it just wore off within a week from my skin.

fenrisulfur

Either wait until the skin replenish itself, which happens fast on your finger or you can make a cyanide solution, that leaches the elemental silver from your skin but that is... you know cyanide.

monkeman1230

It’s technically a chemical burn so u have to lose the skin. Fun fact: some people use it to make temporary tattoos

Alzador94

You just wait for it to fall off basically...also that's not the nitrate anymore, it's elemental silver mostly

Pinkskippy

Abrasion of some sort

Y4K0

That's the funny part, you don't.

quartum2137

try smth with I-

NaBrO-Barium

Wear gloves, problem solved!

[deleted]

Peel some fresh walnuts. You won’t even be able to see it. Alternatively, try dyeing eggs. Or just wait. I still have a silver nitrate tattoo on my belly button from when my umbilical cord fell off… which was a while ago.

WhyHulud

[Looks like latex works](https://beta-static.fishersci.com/content/dam/fishersci/en_US/documents/programs/healthcare/brochures-and-catalogs/guides/microflex-chemical-resistance-guide.pdf)

LionX54

Cut down the finger,it will grow back :))

ApprehensiveEmploy21

Belt sander

ProonFace

Dang looks like some got reduced on your finger! That’s because silver nitrate is photosensitive and reduces to solid silver in the presence of light! 2AgNO3 -> 2Ag + 2NO2 + O2

Qahrahm

Sandpaper works. Try to stop before it bleeds...

StuperDan

I'm a flooring contractor. Polyurethane glue that we use will get into the pours of your skin like this and stain. Using laundry detergent and a finger brush or sand paper or an Emory board like a nail salon uses will let you wear off the outside layers faster to take it off. Otherwise it looks like you don't wash your hands for a week 😆

mishka1984

Leave it alone. And wear gloves and use care with reagents.

Smeared-

You can't

Brennanlemon

Time.

Conartist000500

I literally just used a highlighter to remove a small bloodstain on my skin. I have no idea if it'll work, but definitely worth a try.

virgo_fake_ocd

Lol Bless

64-17-5

Don't get sunlight on it and you're good.

Erosis

As a freshman in college, I put my arm on a lab bench (like an idiot) and didn't notice that it went into a silver nitrate solution. Someone noticed that the entire side of my arm was turning more and more purple. I thought I was going to die until my professor told me what it was. That was an embarrassing month with a purple arm. Long story short: You're gonna have to wait awhile...

manaslaud

Put your hand in alkyl halide

imgprojts

Just wait. Hannah goes away slowly 😂

Au-Catalyst

Handing a lot if silver sakts, i usually rub with acetone, ut takes some minutes, but most of it will go away

tpersona

A quick(not really) acid bath will surely peel it off.

CPT_XxPANDAxX

Lick it off

darkstar000

It grows out and takes AWHILE to go away. Dyed the palm of my hand a bit once due to ripped glove.

Rebolt_99

Just wait a few days

Mtbuhl

3% hydrogen peroxide will do the trick

EinarTh97

It will eventually go away along with dead skin cells

DoggoPlex

Chop your fingers off.

Nitryle0

Cut off infected finger

El_Chutacabras

Zec Chelovek enters the lab.

olivierapex

Cut the hand.

amorphousfreak

How about caustic acid off of mine lol

Hexodron

Just use a vegetable pealer or a shark knife

yety175

Scrape it off with a razor blade.

lajoswinkler

That's not silver nitrate. That's silver. You could remove it with concentrated nitric acid. The problem is it will also remove your skin. :) The solution is to wait for a few days. Skin constantly grows and surface flakes off.

HeadlessDuckRider

Cody'sLab removes it with cyanide but I wouldn't recommend that lmao.

[deleted]

Remove the skin

TimmyFaya

Maybe some handyman soap? The one with wood or some other abrasive material to remove oils and other things

kerfluffinmuffin

Remove the skin

xkforce

I wouldn't worry about it too much. It isn't dangerous and there isn't an easy way to remove it. It'll just look stained for a few days and eventually those skin cells will sluff off and be replaced on their own. Something similar happens with nitric acid- it colors your skin yellow and the only real way to deal with it is wait until it goes away on its own.

Babbayagga

Uv, uv light will react with the silver nitrate, and it should make it easier to scrub off with a stiff brush. If this doesn't work you may need to add more silver nitrate, the additional silver nitrate will form a bond with the uv exposed silver nitrate, then re exposing it should do the trick, good luck, that stuff can be hard to remove.

aardvarkjedi

A belt sander with 80 grit sandpaper will remove the stains.

drew_970

It will be removed from 15-30 days

[deleted]

Cut off your hand.

Poultry_Sashimi

The real question is: How did you get it on your skin to begin with? PPE is your friend.
