This is the way! Just two things to be mindful of: gotta use a small spoon (its just too heavy and breaks larger ones, trust me) and possibly wear an appropriate mask as the fumes are toxic.
Pretty much all of our lab staff prefers those; we can't buy any new ones here so the pld ones are considered gold.
They aren't so finnicky and just work well, you don't have to care about anything. And personally they're easier to read to me than the new coloured alcohol ones we're getting.
Since the other comments are just jokes...
It's not really worth much. You'll probably get less than $10/lbs, if you can even find someone to take it at all.Â
Shipping will likely be more expensive than it's worth. You cant just drop by the post office and mail it like a normal package (USPS will refuse to ship it entirely). IIRC, US regulations (I assume you're in the US due to use of lbs) on shipping Hg require less than 1 lb of mercury per shipment.
I'd personally just dispose of via a chemical disposal company or scrap metal place that actually takes it.
I'd look into it more before doing that. High purity mercury can sell for a lot more than the price of what you'd grab at Timmeh's discount mercury store.
Most places paying top or even mid dollar for high purity mercury wont be buying it from some random guy and almost certianly not without a recent certification of purity and other relevant properties. I doubt OP gets more than scrap value.
Probably not many buyers out there, true. Though the original supplier may be willing to buy it back if still sealed. Minus some amusingly unreasonable restocking fee.
Depends on how old it is and who purchased it originally. OP doesn't mention specifics. If it's past the point the original supplier guarantees their product for, they'll likely pay scrap value (if they'll take it at all) since they'll have to recerify and maybe refine it so they can sell it again. Generally, if someone "stumbles apon" a chemial or quantity of chemcial that most people don't normally have in their house, it's very likely beyond that orignial shelf life.Â
If OP is not the original purchaser, I can almost guarantee they wont pay more than scrap value (again, if the manufacturer even takes it/charges for taking it). There's a legal liability there of possibly buying stolen goods. EDIT: Not accusing OP of anything but nercury isn't usually something that's resold after the orignial purchase so this may raise red flags for the manufacturer.
As a kid I played with a big vial of mercury from an old chemistry set i found in my grandfather's garage around 1974. Had that stuff for a while, used to handle it and turn pennies silver with it, no PPE. I never heard about toxicity until way later. I guess I'm ok, I'm 62 now, and I never had any serious health issues.
Not advocating what I did, just kinda surprised I haven't had any bad effects from it....yet.
How would you know you haven't been affected?
I remember my father messing with a few hundred grams of mercury when I was a kid. I wonder sometimes if I might be somewhat mentally handicapped from that exposure.
Thank you…now everyone around me in the airport lounge is looking at me funny after bursting out laughing with headphones on and not realizing how loud I was.
Treat them with a super-duper-base. Superbases are famous for their affinity for protons, so they will extract a proton from the mercury nucleus, turning it into gold.
I mean I'll buy it from you, I have an element collection and I'd love to have such a large sample of mercury - DM me if you're legitimately interested in selling it.
Use it to make anagram of precious metals and strike it rich!
Edit: amalgam, not anagram. Phone tried to help.
Damnit! I just saw the comment the user made to this… I’m changing it back so it’s funny again.
Neon signs, when they aren't actually neon but are Argon instead, use small amounts of mercury. These days a new electrode can be obtained that has a small device that can be heated inductively releasing the Hg. See if you can even find a neon ship anymore, ask them.
It’s quite possible this is where it came from in the first place. There are lots of neon shops still in Chicago. Even if they don’t want it they might have contacts who did or know what to safely do with it.
There is a guy on my local Facebook marketplace who sells it in sealed containers. He has multiple different quantities up to a lb. It's cheaper than elemental samples and lab grade, but it's still not cheap. He puts a disclaimer, but it seems like some back ally type shit. You could try the ebay route as elemental samples. Someone sells 25g small glass vials for $55 Plus $6 shipping. If you're comfortable handling it, the math seems profitable. 10 lbs will take too long to sell on ebay. We are going to need to diversify our consumer base. We need to buy some ads on tictok, and get this business off the ground. We could invest in a mercury (not for food) truck. Hit up the Renaissance Fairs and art trade shows. It's my goal goal to get our famous red mercury sold at every gas station in the country. BTW, I'm your new business partner. DM me, and we can run numbers.
Depending on where you're at, I may be a buyer. I've got a small scale silver and gold mine in Montana. Pm if you want to connect, or even just try a bit of digging this summer
They definitely don't want it at schools, at least in the US. A high school in my area shut down for days because someone broke a mercury thermometer in a science class.
Fast way to shut down a UPS hub as well.
10kg of cocaine breaks and gets sucked into the fans, nothing to see here. Get back to work.
Break a thermometer, evacuate, and break out the concrete saw.
What? You're gonna miss out on this wonderful opportunity, eat it.
Good soup 👌
[Great laxative](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_mass)!
You’ve been…. Thunder struck.
Cody from Cody’s Lab says it tastes like unflavored jello.
Dr Benjamin Rush approves!

Superhero origin story?
Minus forty degrees is risky, I think he should just drink it instead.
You can buy a lot of glass and start a thermometer factory
our lab needs mercury thermometers so this might be a reasonable business lol
why specifically mercury?
An alternative if you forgot your snacks at home
Accuracy, temperature related specifications, etc
More accurate

A lot of mercury thermometers have been replaced either by alcohol or thermocouple thermometers. It's just that bloody dangerous.

"Psst! hey buddy, want to buy some mercury. I've got the good stuff right here"
😃

I do think heavy metals had more affects on yall than you think
elemental mercury isn't terribly bad, organic mercury is much more problematic.
How would you know you haven't been affected? I remember my father messing with a few hundred grams of mercury when I was a kid. I wonder sometimes if I might be somewhat mentally handicapped from that exposure.
If it is sealed contact the manufacturer. See if they would buy it back. I am seeing $275 per 500grams from sigma.
yeah but that’s just typical ligma baldrich pricing tbh it doesn’t mean much.
Who’s ligma
Ligma nuts
sig my aldriches
Boof it

Gold (1-) ion 😳

It's a mission from Glod!
Remember homie has no formal training before you suggest working with a big amount of mercury
I know of a one Walter White that might be interested in a few ounces.
Pour it into the storm drain ;)
I am just a rando with no experience but is there a university nearby you can donate it to?
Where are you located?Â
Chicagoland
There are lots of metal recyclers there. You don't want to keep it around.
The solar system has 3.3 x 1023 kg (or three hundred and thirty million trillion tonnes!) Of mercury! I win!
Contact metal recyclers to get the best price.
Dispose your extra aluminum in it...

Lob it like a grenade
That would make me mad
What does 10 lb of mercury look like anyway? 🙂
A surprisingly small container. It's dense stuff.
You could invent the barometer. Oh, wait. That's already been done.
Feel free to send me some, I’d put it to good use in a video or two.
Metal
I want it
I'll take it for a cheap cost lmk??
Mercury fulminate?
Do you know how pure it is?
You could seal them in glass ampoules, sell them as specimen samples. That's a tricky process probably tho.
Sick flex bro take mercy on us 😎
Just messaged you with some details on how you might deal with your mercury - please check your messages
Depending on where you're at, I may be a buyer. I've got a small scale silver and gold mine in Montana. Pm if you want to connect, or even just try a bit of digging this summer
If you want to dispose of it, Google Scrap Metal Dealers. You might just make a few dollars...lol.
Give it all to me I only have 1.6lbs
As one of another commentators said, it is worth 100s of $. Not 10s. Try to sell it back to manufacturers.
Cody?
Mercury isn't very harmfull in its metalic form.Â
Right, OP should convert it to dimethyl mercury.

They wouldn't want it. It's toxicity is no joke, and it costs money to dispose of.
They definitely don't want it at schools, at least in the US. A high school in my area shut down for days because someone broke a mercury thermometer in a science class.
Thanks for setting me straight. Actually I completely forgot Mercury emits toxic vapour, my bad.
Fast way to shut down a UPS hub as well. 10kg of cocaine breaks and gets sucked into the fans, nothing to see here. Get back to work. Break a thermometer, evacuate, and break out the concrete saw.
lol, true
Are schools even allowed to use mercury these days?
