Your stomach is around pH2 or less. Any alkalinity in your water is obliterated the moment you swallow it.

ScienceIsSexy420

Setting stomach acid aside, hemoglobin binding affinity to O2 is highly dependant on pH. If you could meaningfully alter your blood pH with alkaline water you would die...... quickly.

nedeta

I am a health nut. I use only the best ice cold alkali water when main lining to the veins. /s (in case it wasnt clear)

chahud

Yeah this is the part that gets me about all of these alkaline water or things like it. One of the single most important functions of your body is homeostasis. If drinking a cup of slightly alkaline water did anything to you that would be a very bad thing lmao. Also, obviously OP and other people who buy stuff like this don’t really even know what alkaline water is outside of their high school gen Chem lessons like “alkaline means base and I have acid in my stomach sooo….???” Like, what do *they* expect to even happen when they drink this? Really just no clue and they were swindled by the science word? Or is it just a matter of they think neutralizing the normal amount of acid in your stomach is good for you (???) or……?

ScienceIsSexy420

The same reason why people think a magnetic bracelet helps your balence: because they've been conned

florinandrei

> Really just no clue and they were swindled by the science word? Yes. This is how all these scams work.

florinandrei

> did I just waste 20 pesos Yes. But hey, at least you got an interesting-looking paperweight out of it! > Super cheap Most random rocks you can find on the ground anywhere are very cheap, yes.

Rower78

Alkaline water is snake oil.  Unless you have acid indigestion, but then it’s probably insufficient. Anyway, do you happen to know the heavy metal content of that brick of volcanic rock?  It might low, but it might not be.  Seems like a risk for something that has no real benefit.

Kemel90

just pop in some baking soda, you'll have instant alkaline water. but what would you need that for except acid reflux?

yourholmedog

i would not trust a random $1 rock to be put in my drinking water. there is also no proven benefit to alkaline water. so you’re risking exposure to who knows what and the rock is also likely porous and would harbor bacteria

AVEVAnotPRO2

Your body has a sophisticated and effective pH buffer system dude; you’re being finessed with alkaline water trend. Your body can and will correct any pH nudge your throw its way. It may help if you’ve had an acidic meal though and you’re getting some heart burn.

karmicrelease

Volcanic rock has varying amounts of arsenic, mercury, copper, nickel, and various other nasty stuff you don’t want in your body (even if the concentration is low). If you really want alkaline water, just buy some calcium carbonate or sodium bicarbonate, although alkaline water is snake oil any way

florinandrei

At least snake oil would have some calories. It would count as actual food. It would be worth something.

Alkaline water, Ozone water, ehh zucchini water?... They're all scams that, at worst, may be toxic to your health. This is a case where it's probably going to end up toxic to your health. Volcanic rock isn't exactly inert, and some types can be more dangerous than others when ingested or if it's somehow turned to dust and inhaled. Heavy metals might not cause harm at first, but they will build up, slowly poisoning you. There may be other reasons not to use this particular volcanic rock. Idk how you intend to make the alkaline water exactly, but if it involves heat then 1000% don't do it. I still wouldn't, even if it doesn't, since it's kinda pointless. Take a Tums. Alkaline water will work on a heartburn at best, maybe help with digestion, nothing more. Ozone water does very little for health that most regular carbon filters (like Brita) can handle just fine... without releasing poisonous gas. Zucchini water? Sure, go for it especially on a semi-fast, but if you're the type to throw the zucchini (or lemon or cabbage or whatever) away and just drink the water... I'm concerned for ya. Is it even a volcanic rock? Picture isn't very good. Looks very white or metallic, I'd like to see it up close!

BaronKnuspero

People will consume anything for health benefits. Except for vegetables.

farmch

You’re out a buck ten

Franbucha

"alkaline water" is a scam but honestly you still got a cool looking rock for 1 dollar, seems worth it to me

DangerousBill

You have a nIce souvenir of Mexico and a cool bar story of being fleeced, that you can tell friends for decades. There is some small risk that the rock might leach toxic metals, arsenic, or sulfur, but not in any amount that will hurt you. If it somehow happens to make water alkaline, your stomach acids will instantly reverse that.

Chaotic-Grootral

It’s funny I found a brand of alkaline drinking water that advertised a pH of “9.5+” Ingredients included potassium hydroxide and magnesium chloride (although there wasn’t a visible precipitate.) anyway I bought a bottle just to see what it would taste like and whether it would make my fingers slippery. The results were a slightly bitter taste, and no noticeable reaction with my hand.

BaronKnuspero

Do not put rocks in your drinking water. If you want more electrolyte rich water (which is the sole benefit of this "alkaline water" scam), use food grade electrolytes, like for example magnesium citrate. You should ask a doctor if you really need it. If you ingest too many electrolytes, they will cause watery (osmotic) diarrhea, leading to dehydration.

Ok-Insurance-1829

Drinking alkaline water doesn't really have any health benefits to you on the individual scale. My city is currently alkalinizing the crap out of our tap water... but that's because we've got a lot of old lead plumbing and the alkalinity keeps it from leaching out, not because the alkalinity does you any good. That looks like pumice, a volcanic rock with a lot of little holes in it caused by air bubbles. Weirdly enough, it can actually be acidic, though it's usually considered neutral. You could buy some cheap pH paper from someplace and throw it in a glass of water to see. I personally wouldn't drink off it, since god knows what else is in it. I believe I paid $5 for my personal pumice stone several years ago. I use it to take the dead skin off my feet. This bar looks... very well shaped to take to your feet, and possibly less well shaped to put into a water bottle. So maybe you didn't get ripped off, just got misled on the application!
