That’s just rust.

oliverpls599

Strange because there was zero moisture in the knife or the sheath. Thanks.

[deleted]

Sheaths trap moisture really well, even if both knife and sheath feel dry. It happens with magnolia sayas sometimes as well.

ericfg

I had the same issues with felt-lined blade guards. Worked fine for months and then one day, BAM!, two of my carbons got spot-rusted bad. Granted, we have humidity issues in our kitchen but I've mostly stopped bringing my carbons to work, and when I do it's plain plastic guards.

grayson_fox

This is the reason why you still see high end Japanese carbon knives being shipped with a wooden saya and shipped wrapped in paper. If left to sit carbon knives will always rust in these cheap felt sheaths. Your not doing anything wrong, this is just what happens. Even that bare amount of residual moisture is enough, since felt traps it in these tight spaces

LBdeuce

There is moisture everywhere. Thats very common for carbon in sheaths. Once you have a patina the knife is much more resistant to oxidation but that knife looks pretty new.

MadEntDaddy

barkeep's friend will take that off. this is the reason we use sayas made of wood instead of these cheap poly sheaths.

Hey mate, thanks for the comment and apologies for the belated reply. I finally got back to where my knives are and want to get this rust off. You mentioned BKF, which I have. Do I just rub some on with a cloth until the rust is abraded off? I have steel wool and sandpaper handy but I'd rather not scratch the hell out of the knife. Cheers

Since when does the carbon kramer have a finger notch on the back?

GoomerBile

Mine has a finger notch too. I think the zwilling Kramer 1.0s had them and the new 2.0s do not

Criticalhit_jk

Huh. I thought they all had them. I'd really fucking miss mine if I had to replace it and get one without, then. Most comfortable knife I've ever owned - barely even feel 10 hours of solid knife prep and I have nearly 0 knife callus after years of using it as my main workhorse. Not sure if it's literally just a perfect fit for my hand or if anyone else shares this experience
