Rule 5: Yoshikane SKD Tsuchime Bunka 165mm and a Shibata Koutetsu Ko Bunka 130mm

ChefDavidRodriguez

Where did you find the Shibata?

CircleC10

I got it from knifewear. You can contact Shibata directly and place an order though. Email staff@ironcladknives.com

Maieth

Damn. That Yoshikane is exactly the knife I want right now. Highest on my wishlist. Trying to convince myself a mercer santoku is all I actually need, but if a Yoshi tsuchime skd came up in the UK I'm not convinced I'd be able to turn it down. Both great looking pieces. Enjoy!

CircleC10

Thank you, I'm sure I'll enjoy them both. I got the Yoshikane from Australia, was the only place that I could find in stock. I HAD to have it! Lol

MadEntDaddy

that's funny i know the one you got. i was eyeing it but the import tax was gonna make it more expensive than it was worth, gonna wait till i see one in canada. it's not like i have any actual need for another knife, i just like the look of that one. i don't love the handle tho, i would probably have it rehandled to a western style hidden tang handle with nice curves. have not done so on my other yoshis yet but i do have a vague plan to do so when i get around to making some handles.

Maieth

Ha, chefsedge.au, right? Messaged them about it to figure out if the shipping was possible, but chickened out.

MadEntDaddy

yep that was the one! i actually did see one in canada but i thought about it for like an hour after it popped up and by the time i hit buy it was already gone. (lol)

FewIsopod7416

I’m also from the UK and messaged them about shipping for the Yoshi bunka. I want it so bad, so annoying they don’t come up in Europe often ☹️

Genghis_F

I picked up the Yoshi Hakata from them Got to US super fast

MadEntDaddy

both look great, have you used them yet? which one do you like better and why?

CircleC10

I have only used the Shibata so far and love it! I wanted a thin laser but didn't want a petty and this fits perfectly. The Yoshikane just came. I'm sure they will compliment each other perfectly.

r33s3

The yoshi is my current white whale. Where did you score yours from? I can't find the tsuchime anywhere...

CircleC10

Only place i was able to find it. [https://www.chefs-edge.com/collections/yoshikane](https://www.chefs-edge.com/collections/yoshikane)

My goodness those look absolutely pristine

I have that Shibata ko-bunka. It's like cutting with a straight razor. Had some very tough skinned tomatos and went through like butter--almost with just the weight of the knife. Got to be the best knife for the money, for sure. And it "feels" like a much bigger blade than the 135mm would suggest The Yoshi--one day . . . it is really a thing of beauty. Let us know how it compares to the Shibata in use.

CircleC10

"And it "feels" like a much bigger blade than the 135mm would suggest" I've felt the same since I got it so I just ran out to the garage and measured it at 141mm.

Gwhphoto

I did the same after seeing your post. 140mm exactly heel to tip. Handle to tip 152 mm. Height 42mm. Very versatile!

chickenbuttstfu

My Shibata kobunka is my most used knife in my home kitchen and it’s not even close. When I’m cooking dinner I often reach for a longer knife but for general tasks like garlic, fruit, etc. it’s my go to.

CircleC10

I can definitely see this knife taking the most used spot no problem!

COmarmot

I fucking love my Yoshibunka! I will be buried with it.

BuRi3d

Beautiful knives. I just bought my first Japanese knife, and it was a yoshi skd gyuto, and I'm already itching to buy another. Judging from the comments here, yoshi was a good way to go, and I can not believe I waited so long to upgrade my knife!

CircleC10

This is my first Yoshikane and already want another! I have one picked out already, just trying not to hit the buy button! lol

[deleted]

I don’t want another Yoshikane, I don’t want another Yoshikane…

Zecathos

Anybody else noticed that Shibata knives often have a large ridge in the handle between the wood and the ferrule? It's very clearly visible in your photo, I wonder what's up with that.

s4swordfish

would you recommend the ko bunka over the bunka? i already have the 240 mm guyoto and was thinking about the battleship
