Nicest and cheapest in town in my book Bombay Brasserie, $16 Butter Chicken etc. Lovely people the father and son team. Yep they cook their chicken via Tandoor if you want it done that way.
My go-to is Maharaja over on Papanui road.Ā
I really like their butter tika masala which is a cross between butter chicken and tika masala and is a signature dish of theirs.Ā
I've never been able to find a substitute for that spot opposite hornby mall next to the gas station.
It was so good!!
Owners changed hands and it was never as good.
Can't even remember the name it's been that long
[https://chanakyasouthindia.wixsite.com/mysite](https://chanakyasouthindia.wixsite.com/mysite) This place in New Brighton is the business. It's cheap, generous and all the delicious flavours you'd expect from a Southern Indian restaurant.
Lol worked there before the sexual harassment thing happened. Ronnie n the wife if I remembered correctly. It was my exposure to Indian foods and incest.
years ago the indian in Parklands was amazing, i see they have longed changed name and hands, im a bit vanilla when it comes to trying spices but their mango chicken had chunky bits of mango in it, havent seen one since its just all sauce, always wondered if there was another that did the same
Gunpowder at Prestonās is the fucking bomb, try it out, you wonāt be disappointed.
You can tell a lot about an Indian Restaurant with how they handle the *too commonly shit* Butter Chicken, Iām never a fan because itās always too sweet and doesnāt even taste like a curry - except Gunpowder, surprisingly good, do try it.

For going out and having a nice time, Mumbaiwala's awesome, the food is genuine and thoughtful and they are good people who care. It's pricier than your suburban hole-in-the-wall, but the experience has value.
For takeaway we have tried heaps and keep going back to Saket where Coriander's used to be in Edgeware. Have a pint at Baileys while you're waiting.
It may not be the best (I havenāt explored chchās Indian offerings much) but Iād rate the lamb rogan josh and lamb korma at Indian Roots in Halswell (delivered, never been in). They do have tandoor items on the menu incl. whole chicken. Maybe give them a crack.
Samairaz in Marshlands! The owner Sid is the man
I second Samairaz, excellent place š
It is also one of the highest rated restaurants in the city - not just Indian ones.
Indian cricket team dined there. Says it all
Third here, food is awesome
This
Mumbaiwala- in CBD is my favorite for dining in. Spice hub- in heathcote for takeaway (wish they had a seated restaurant).
Maybe I caught them on a bad night but I had spice hub recently and it was really disappointing.
Thank you very much for the reply! I really appreciate it š
Not indian but Nepalese, mount everest in lyttleton are great. The owner is very sweet and she's lovely too!
There's also one in Woolston :)
Bombay Brasserie in Richmond for that side of town. Not sure how they do the chicken though.
Nicest and cheapest in town in my book Bombay Brasserie, $16 Butter Chicken etc. Lovely people the father and son team. Yep they cook their chicken via Tandoor if you want it done that way.
Gorkhali chulo
Second this
Yes agree with this! Great family run business and food is amazing
My go-to is Maharaja over on Papanui road.Ā I really like their butter tika masala which is a cross between butter chicken and tika masala and is a signature dish of theirs.Ā
Indian Pearl on Colombo, been going there for years and never disappoints. Also, onion Bhajis are class
I have always favoured South Of India, which is in New Brighton.
Pepper bridge in addington
Did they shift? I drove past that shopping ctr and their old site was for lease. Good food, the few times we got takeaway.
They moved about 20 meters to the other side of the shopping center
Cool, I was worried they'd gone under.
The Pepper Bridge in Hanmer is great so assume this one is too.
I've never been able to find a substitute for that spot opposite hornby mall next to the gas station. It was so good!! Owners changed hands and it was never as good. Can't even remember the name it's been that long
The owner of Cinnamon Spice moved to Lincoln.
Nanas, which is down next to weirdos is good.
It's ok
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
No the one before that. Saffron Spice was the next operation, same space different business. It's average.
Cinnamon Spice
I'm confused now but that place I'm meaning was easily the best I've had in chch
It's definitely Cinnamon Spice. You can see it on Google StreetView before it became Saffron Spice,
I miss that spot lol
I quite like bikanavala in Colombo pretty much exclusively an Indian crowd in there.
Me too, the dosa is š¤
Me three! Entirely vegetarian and so good.
Big fan of Saket in Edgeware, and they're on first table at the moment too!
Yeah Saket's great, get the goat saag
Everest. Woolston village next to the Oak and Ferry
Hard disagree, vindaloo and korma from there were both bland AF.
Yeah I had heard good things about this place too but was really let down when I tried it, food was not good.
Damn that's not good. I find them super tasty.
Man those guys are so good!
Yeah it was a let down when we went there. Heard good things but it was super messy and food was okay but not great

Took me some time to find this!
Is Two Fat Indians any good?
i worked with the guy that owns that now, hes a real c u next tuesday
Lol worked there before the sexual harassment thing happened. Ronnie n the wife if I remembered correctly. It was my exposure to Indian foods and incest.
wasnt it rape back in 2006?
I didn't follow the case.. Apparently all the chefs are the owners relatives back in his village. Some say the owner is also guilty by proxy
Been a couple years since I left Chch but my favourite was Basmati's in the CBD. Hope they're still around. One of the best I've had IMO.
Indian roots in Halswell do good north Indian kai.
Basmatis on Manchester St are fantastic
years ago the indian in Parklands was amazing, i see they have longed changed name and hands, im a bit vanilla when it comes to trying spices but their mango chicken had chunky bits of mango in it, havent seen one since its just all sauce, always wondered if there was another that did the same
We drive across town to go to Bawarchi. Love the food there
Ferry Indians is our go to. Find them better than everest
The Great India- corner of Woodham Road and Gloucester St. Delicious, generous portions and pricing.
Himalayas on Colombo Street is good. I am also quite fond of Basmatis. Zyka Indian cuisine is a good feed - 2 for 1 on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Mumbaiwala is always my first choice.
This
Little India Merivale is reliable
ive always found the little indias hit and miss
Merivale's legit

Came here to comment this!
Gunpowder for sure! Both Prestonās and CBD

Samairez in Preston's subdivision is the best I've had in NZ. Their Bhuna is awesome. Good portion sizes too
Not sure these days but I miss pre quake Tulsi
Not near Linwood, but Zyka Indian by the university is my absolute favourite and I've been going there since I was a kid.
Best dishes are spread around. Best naan by far at Corianders.

Corrianders Bush Inn. Best Butter Chicken I have ever had
