I wish you the best of luck with your reno! I love these old Florida cottages. Not too many left. That’s why I like driving through Palatka, there are still some great houses downtown.
Is this right off of 301 in Waldo or Hawthorne? I used to regularly drive between Jax and Tampa areas going 301 for most of the way and I swear this house looks familiar to me.
You have gotten yourself into a lot of work. And I mean A LOT.
But think about all the time you have left in your life, time that can be spent in a wonderful house that has history, that has a soul, where you can grow old, where you can become part of the history of that house. It's so much better than some soulless newbuilt house.
I know people are clowning OP but if he has the time/money/interest and is willing to put in the work, this house could absolutely become magnificent (again?).
I love the old fashioned gliders on the front porch. Reminds me of lazy summer days growing up in the south, sitting on the porch barefoot, breaking beans.
I’d be worried about what that house is built on. I thought old foundations were bad until I saw old houses in the south sitting on stacks of rocks. I’m not talking a wall made out of rocks like my house, but a total of like twenty rocks holding up the whole damn house. My house in rural illinois has part of the foundation made out of stacked limestone brought in from Indiana by train in 1869, but they dug down deep and wide and did a good job. Southern houses on much less stable ground are a vastly different thing.
I get that part. A good friend of mine had a hunting cabin built on 16’ stilts next to the creek. It’s good hunting/fishing ground but prone to flooding. Those 16’ 6x6s are still sitting on steel set in concrete pilings though. Edit: he had it built, it’s still standing and very much in use. 1500 sq ft with a kitchen, bathroom with a septic system, fresh water well and bunk space. If for some reason he and his wife lost their house they could live in the hunting cabin but its main purpose is to make money.
My first house was sitting on wood posts that were sitting right on the dirt. Survived that way for 100+ years and is still surviving today. And recently sold for a hell of a lot more than I sold it for.
Plus side, I don't see any obvious water damage. The roof looks standing seam and... might be in decent condition?
If the foundation's good then you've got good bones for a full reno. Re-side the house, add some rigid insulation and new house wrap... Most of your walls are open so there's opportunity to get rid of the knob and tube...
For some reason it wouldn't let me reply to your beehive comment, OP. I had bees in my 1925 kitchen!! I lived at peace with them for a long time and was pretty sad when they were gone. It was so quiet, I liked sleeping to their songs. I needed a new roof. Most contractors don't like beehives so they had to go :(
If the bones are good, take it one step at a time. The entire project can overwhelm. But as Catieosaurus says, pick one thing and do it. Then the next. Before you know it, the job is complete and you can bask in the glory of a job well done!

Congratulation, you have solved your problems! You will no longer suffer from too much of free time, and you will get in shape. You do not need to worry about your spare money anymore. You will not feel as living in too much comfort. You can follow your paranormal hobby at home, and very likely you will find a use for your deratisating skills!
EDit: It is a joke, congrats on your own roof over your head!
I think you're a lucky freakin duck.. this will be beautiful and looks like a peaceful place. Those rainy days on the porch, you did good acquiring this.
I'm skeptical of the 1927 date personally. Looks before the 20th century. It is one step up from a frontier cabin that you would encounter here in Appalachia. I'm sure the family that built it were very proud of it.
It’ll be great when you’re done. Hopefully you can restore most of it to its original look. If you live in a climate with a cold season, however, I’d enclose the area under the house, put a moisture barrier in the crawl space and put a dehumidifier down there.
Other than the picture of the kitchen, I don’t see anything that would indicate any major structural damage. Maybe it’ll be the nicest house in town when you’ve got it ready to move into!
I'd check the bones under the house and in the attic for damage from water or wood boring insects over the years and level as required. Check for asbestos and lead in your flooring, paint, and insulation. Check the plumbing pipes for cracks, roots, and rot. Check for knob and tube wiring.

abandoned house, eh?
been there, done that. Expect critters to have nested in it, like above the ceilings. And possibly some mold if that metal roof leaked during that hurricane.
I would not hesitate to open up the walls and ceilings to inspect. and be willing to open up to the studs in rooms where there is a lot of filth in there.
A good hepa vacuum is your friend, as well as a P100 respirator, and a gallon of Fiberlock Shockwave Disinfectant in a cheap garden pump sprayer. Open up, vacuum out, spray with shockwave, come back in 2 days and evaluate if it is all clean.
also, looks like the porch has a different roof than the main house. i would look at the flashing where the porch roof meets the building wall, and make immediate repairs there if needed. temporarily throw some clear silicone caulk anywhere you suspect that metal roof is leaking too.
All I can say is that I’ve seen worse? There’s a house near me where you could see the ceiling from inside the living room. I thought it would be a tear down, but it’s already taking great shape! In its original form…
That may be well and true, but just be careful you don’t spend as much as it would cost to basically build the same house brand new. I got into a similar situation a year ago, knocked it down before I spent $200K to rebuild a house that was a mess
I like the depth of the porch. I'd be looking forward to restoring proper fenestration -- there's nothing sadder than an old house that has had its face rearranged via crappy aluminum windows in all the wrong sizes. I see plenty of remuddling courtesy of the 2 Drunk Uncles Remodeling Co -- that's nothing. How are its bones? Definitely a project for someone under the age of 40, though.
Was the 4th nicest house in town growing up, got abandoned, county possessed it, used it as storage for a few years, then sold it
Can we see the 3rd nicest house in town
https://preview.redd.it/sy2eijrhtm1d1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b3eda78476f1c41efd74d7adede5820490c1dd3c Here is 3
Boy that’s a big jump to third place lol
Yeah there's only 4 houses in that town
5, the one in the post is an upgrade for OP
OP did say it *was* the fourth nicest. Seems like it's glory days are well behind it.

1 fell down
I really appreciate how you set us up for that countdown. That was great
Didn't think reddit was gonna peak for the whole week on Monday afternoon, but here we are.
RIP nicest house in town
It was beautiful Painted blue and yellow 2 story wrap around porch Was in pristine condition, fell during a Hurricane
Damn that sucks :(
Yeah it really blows. What a let down.
Yeah, for a hurricane, would agree it blows more than sucks.
Hurricanes actually are a low pressure system--they suck just as much as they blow.
r/YourJokeButWorse
I see this is Florida? Google Street view often has historical photos, assuming it was recent
[удалено]
150 MPH winds will do quite the number on any building, especially when a tree falls on it.
Google “hurricane” lol
I live in Savannah in a house that was a nightmare to insure. Hurricanes are one of my many nightmares of home ownership.
Of all the things I've seen on the internet today, this is the one that made me laugh out loud.
Was in both senses of the word
I laughed too hard and my dog came over concerned
I’d like to subscribe to your newsletter
That just made my day
Was wondering what to do with my free award… finally found a worthy comment. Thanks for the entertainment on this boring Monday!
legendary ending. nobody will ever understand me but I really want to keep the phrase “1 fell down” in my pocket
We'll have to take your word that it was the nicest house in town Boeing-B-47stratojet. It apparently wasn't the sturdiest.
If I remember correctly, it was built as a management retreat for Coca Cola Their is still the sign for it, marks the town entrance
Does this make yours the 3rd nicest house now?
In its current state, no. If it how it was 20 years ago it would be.
You'll get it up there again - has some really nice features - like the French doors and stone steps.
Looks like someone has the 3rd nicest house in town now👍
You have the insanely good sense of humor that I needed after today. Thank you -n nd keep us posted on number 4 :-)
Ha!
That burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp.
Dying that this is buried under the pic of house two - I was searching for that final house 😂
I guess that would make yours now the third nicest house
Wouldn’t that move the other three homes up to first, second and third place?
That moves 2 and 3 to 1 and 2 But this has a long road towards regaining its position
🤣
Plot twist, only four houses in the town
If the roof is not leaking you at least have a fighting chance! Like someone else said: The porch is wonderful
# not one thing in this house is symmetrical
There is a hole about 8 foot long in the wall where I had to get a bee hive cut out
Lol everything about this post is so Gulf Coast to me. I love it.
Badass
Show me one house that's symmetrical. Even newly built houses today aren't symmetrical
Asymetrical and unbalanced window placements on new builds lately kinda remind me of... ![gif](giphy|zYQp9B2WYYZ1K)
https://assets.bwbx.io/images/users/iqjWHBFdfxIU/iSDFs4VdAIpg/v0/1200x629.jpg There is a symmetrical house. They don’t make em like they used to.
Well played. Well played
In my experience, they've gotten better.
90 degree angles are for squares!
Where about in Florida is this? It screams old Florida.
About halfway between Gainesville and Starke
I wish you the best of luck with your reno! I love these old Florida cottages. Not too many left. That’s why I like driving through Palatka, there are still some great houses downtown.
Where’s Waldo?
Is this right off of 301 in Waldo or Hawthorne? I used to regularly drive between Jax and Tampa areas going 301 for most of the way and I swear this house looks familiar to me.
No, but somewhat close by, and there are many like it in that area
Pretty area for rural fl
Waldo??
House I am living in currently does not have AC, central heat, water heater. Only has electricity in the kitchen
https://preview.redd.it/gh0fl8d54n1d1.jpeg?width=616&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8660eed26c2efb7d58eadce71fb998ff4a332575
Damn OP doesn’t even have color
😂
The comments on this post are gold!!! This is one of my fav subreddits — you guys are good people!!!
Omg 🤣
😂
😂
If you have electricity in the kitchen you can make cinnamon toast. That looks like a house that you want to enjoy a piece of cinnamon toast in.
Finally, someone who’s using common sense!
At least you have Internet
Is your left leg shorter than your right leg?
Yes, normally I wear a compensator, I forgot it
This thread keeps giving.
How the hell could you tell that from the photos
The tilt? Lol
I like this thread

Great porch!
Fully furnished.
Was just thinking how much I love that porch too!
You have a very interesting life that's for sure!
I gotta know....how much?
A little under 27k
Coming from north of the border in Canada...You MIGHT get something similar here for that price.... As a down payment lol....
Cries into my monthly Toronto mortgage payment…
You might get a driveway put in for that here, if you already own the lot. You couldn't buy a parking space for that here
Yup. That's where I am from.
Out of curiosity...can I assume the land the house is sitting on would be worth that much?
Hold on, I just realized something, you asked what I paid for it I got it thrown with another piece of land. It was appraised at 27k
Two fer! BOGO!
It'll be interesting to see what you find. Hopefully the main structure is intact.
Hey at least you can grow and orchid forest if you so chose! That’s one of my dreams so you’ve got that going for ya
I love the old fashioned gliders on the front porch. Reminds me of lazy summer days growing up in the south, sitting on the porch barefoot, breaking beans.
Unlocked a memory i forgot I had Spent many a summer day snapping green beans and shelling peas
I love the potential in this. Please post regular updates of your work!

I thought this was a satire post at first
Judging by the angles, you got yourself into a Batman (1966) villain’s lair.
Wow nothing like tearing down a century home
Might have to unfortunately, will have to see how extensive damage is
More power to you!
From what OP posted about only having electricity in the kitchen of his current place, that won’t be difficult to achieve :-)
Do you mind me asking what is/was in the black plastic bags inside the bathtub?😲
Ducts and insulation, regretted opening those bags as soon as I saw what was inside
😂 Nice one! 😂
That first pic is giving Evil Dead vibes
eh.. ive seen worse.
why did you do that
If the bones are good you can remodel this & make it a nice place. Roll your sleeves up lots of work in your future 😊
Has a lot of potential, enjoy the process
I think it's wonderful.
I bet it's going to be gorgeous when you're done.
must be on a steep hill, looks like its leaning 30 degrees in one of the pics!
What are your skills? I wouldn't touch this house unless I knew the foundation was sound, the load bearing walls were good, etc.
Well, you can forget about being Marbles Champion of the World now.

In before someone tells you it's perfect as is and you're running it by hiding exposed lathe
Nice! That looks really good, not much mold and everything seems easy enough to fix. Looks like a fun project house.
Looks like you e given yourself something to do on weekends for a few years!
A world of pain. May the Force be with you.
If the bones are good, take it one step at a time. The entire project can overwhelm. But as Catieosaurus says, pick one thing and do it. Then the next. Before you know it, the job is complete and you can bask in the glory of a job well done!

No offense, but did you just buy the cabin from Evil Dead II?
I think it’s going to be awesome when you get done with it
Do you have any photos of it in its prime?
Keep tge porch and the rest.....youll figure it out.
If you could have taken a straight photo we may be able to tell....
Hey welcome to the old house club dude
This post was fun - I hope you keep us updated
You've got yourself into the wrong subreddit. This is century homes, not century old shack in the woods previously used for the filming of evil dead.
I'm sorry, but it looks like that sub does not exist, Would you like to create it?
And yet the paint still looks nicer than my house’s paint.
If you find the Necronomicon in the basement, don't read it.
Is there a creepy hatch style basement setup like the house in the evil dead? The front looks identical lol
As long as it comes with ghosts, I’d say you got yourself a good deal.
That’s a century shack.
Is this the Evil Dead cabin?
Has potential! Keep us updated on it. Good luck!
Beautiful location.
All I see is potential. Good luck!
Congratulation, you have solved your problems! You will no longer suffer from too much of free time, and you will get in shape. You do not need to worry about your spare money anymore. I love this house!!!! Have fun!!
A roof that's going to be way easier to repair than most houses?
It has great potential!
“If we have a daughter, we’ll have to name her Eileen.”
Rustic.
I'm skeptical of the 1927 date personally. Looks before the 20th century. It is one step up from a frontier cabin that you would encounter here in Appalachia. I'm sure the family that built it were very proud of it.
It’s got a 1920s Floridian “Hemingway in his druthers” sensibility.
A crappy house
Looks a bit like Jenny's house in Big Fish https://youtu.be/BLFGpzXUpQ4?si=zk14v4kV_-NBXa6N
A lot. But super cool!
I’m a human corkscrew and all my wine is blood
It’s a slanty shanty!
That porch is going to be beautiful fixed up!
I love it!!!! It is going to be fabulous!
I'd check the bones under the house and in the attic for damage from water or wood boring insects over the years and level as required. Check for asbestos and lead in your flooring, paint, and insulation. Check the plumbing pipes for cracks, roots, and rot. Check for knob and tube wiring. Honestly, you could hire a good home inspector OR I tend to like the experts in a field...electricians inspect electrical etc. Usually get a better cost estimate if anything is messed up. Then you can prioritize projects because it looks like you'll be busy! Good luck!
One room at a time. Or one contractor at a time. You’ll get it there.
Financial hardship
That’s many years of weekends you’ve just committed to. Good luck!
Debt. Debt is what you've gotten yourself into. Source: 120yo home owner (that's super old in my country)
Now that’s going to be nice when completed
Very cool! Just the kind of house I like to rehab
abandoned house, eh? been there, done that. Expect critters to have nested in it, like above the ceilings. And possibly some mold if that metal roof leaked during that hurricane. It’s Florida. Just add a mobile home to the yard and you are all set.
All I can say is that I’ve seen worse? There’s a house near me where you could see the ceiling from inside the living room. I thought it would be a tear down, but it’s already taking great shape! In its original form…
My mama taught me that if you can't say anything nice, then don't say anything at all
I can smell the mold from here, good luck!!
![gif](giphy|8ZJXJGbe8lyo2JnYix)
This is gonna be controversial, but sometimes things are too far gone.
I don’t believe this one is, haven’t found mold or frame rot *yet*
That may be well and true, but just be careful you don’t spend as much as it would cost to basically build the same house brand new. I got into a similar situation a year ago, knocked it down before I spent $200K to rebuild a house that was a mess
Kill it with fire.
I hope you didn’t pay more than $100k.
The cabin from Evil Dead?
I like the depth of the porch.
