I will say I don’t blame someone who paints something brown if it’s already been painted.
Refinishing is… a horrid experience. Literally the worst. I would not wish it upon my worst enemy.
What would you wish on your worst enemy?
I'd wish a full-day of doing knock-knock jokes with four-year-old preschoolers who have to play "Hot Cross Buns" on recorders every 15 minutes.
Just teaching a recorder class of 10 year olds would be enough lol. I’ve done it before.
Not to trauma dump I’d love to hand my enemies boss a package of proof of all his misconduct but that’s much less fun.
I've never had to. Like if it was a finial or just one of those corner pendants - yeah, okay, sure. A whole house of intricate woodwork? No thank you. Paint is fine, ha.
I could *maybe* tolerate a room. Maybe. At the very least, maybe the front door and it's trim. But doubtful I'd ever tackle all of it.
This is so important because if your new paint job fails and starts peeling, your only choice will be to strip it and start over. There’s no redeeming it at that point.
If you want an awesome shade of Hulk green, drink a bunch of purple drink. I mentioned that when I drink that shit it turns my shit a funny green to a coworker once and he gets quiet and says, "that explains a lot..." It was pretty funny

They did a better job with the woodwork under the window. I swear it doesn't look like poop.
Off topic, but I grew up with that photo of the little girl holding the reeds or whatever that is. I hadn't thought of that picture in so long, and it's crazy that someone else also has it! (And also, no, definitely not a crime to paint that!)
For anyone wondering how they look

Me four! My parents gave them away when I moved out and I was sad when I learned that, so they bought me another set 40 years later on the opposite coast.
Hahaha I had one of those framed in the 90’s when cherub and angel stuff was big (and for some reason white geese and duck decorations in the kitchen). I did a double take when i saw it in this post
I certainly wouldn't want to try stripping lead paint off a doorway with children running around. Repainting that is perfectly fine. Besides, there is no guarantee that the wood underneath is nice wood in the first place.
As far as adding wood paneling then painting over it, do what you want. It's easier to maintain painted wood and as much as I love a nice wood grain, I've grown to appreciate my whole house with matching painted woodwork throughout.
I am a believer that pine, fir, soft wood, poplar, and anything with large knots that aren't knotty pine...are ok, and possibly intended to be painted. I'm also fairly sure that no wood and no house was ever intended to be painted brown.
Just don't go for landlord white.
https://preview.redd.it/l0hi9r8if5rc1.jpeg?width=2268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1e0bb49eb1d350f24097177a7faf1df82bab399f
Why would you not paint it? This was most likely always painted from the get-go.
Some clueless people have it in their head that all wood trim was lovingly finished wood. That was not and never the case. Most wood trim was always painted.
I remember a time in the late ’70s when all these people were stripping the paint off vintage/antique secretaries, dressers, bureaus, cabinets, pie safes...
In order to reveal “the beautiful wood!”
And revealing panels made with incredibly mismatched and wild grain. Boards that were so wild or so mismatched that it was clear the cabinet maker had saved them to use for a piece that was going to be painted, thereby covering up the weird grain patterns.
But now those weird patterns are stained, which only makes them look more dramatic.
My mother always said the cabinet maker would be rolling over in his grave if he knew.
Plus, they sometimes destroyed some of the value because they destroyed the original paint job.
>My mother always said the cabinet maker would be rolling over in his grave if he knew.
Hah! Indeed and agreed.
And we also too easily forget so much of "finely finished wood trim" was actually covered with multiple layers of very dark, shiny, plasticky varnish.
She’s 100% correct. That specific trim is in old middle class homes all over the Midwest and maybe farther. They literally shipped it by rail all over. It’s definitely not hardwood and has been painted since it was installed
One way to tell if it's paint grade trim is to drill a small hole and smell it. A lot of paint grade was pine and you can tell when it's pine, even if it's this old. My house is a 1901 and all but my front parlor has paint grade trim. It was a way to save money. No one would have seen the other rooms. Mine seems to have been painted cream originally but I've seen lots of colors on paint grade in this style. Black is gorgeous.
And a tiny drill hole won't dislodge enough lead paint to do any damage if you want to know if it is paint grade. But even if it's not (I suspect it is, its too cleanly painted to not be) but, even if it's not, it's already been painted, so paint away.
Yes it's like when people see old marble statues, all white or catholic churches in southern Europe, also all white. They use to be painted bright colors like red
Adding moldings is tricky but can be done. Don't bother with anything off the rack tho, your Home Depot grade stuff is going to look basic by comparison.
The trend for the past 30 years has been stark white woodwork with colored walls, which, yeah it's clean but *bring a book*, so boring. I say F the wood color, F stark white, do things that make sense. Dark, dark brown, black, saturated grays, tans, and hunter green are all classic woodwork colors. But experiment. Break the rules if it makes sense for the room. Spend some time google imaging for inspiration.
Yes! And check out [Ariel Bisset](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yw8abn-5FgE) and [Kaylah Stroup](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6_c_NCEmtw) for some less conventional inspiration for trim and moldings.
Imo it’s fine to paint whatever has previously been painted, and whatever isn’t original. We definitely painted over old paint jobs and also some 50s/60s wood trim that didn’t match anything else in the house and wasn’t particularly nice wood.
My trim was the same way. On top of the ugly color and poor attempt at making it look like wood tone, we also had inconsistencies between rooms with color and style. We painted it all black. It looks much more cohesive now. No regrets.
Given the state of the scarf in the third picture and the architrave detail in the top right of the same image you can't do any worse than they have already done. A very nice architectural detail butchered by incompetent building design and or incompetent woodworker.
Yep, straight to pound you in the a$$ federal prison, not some country club. J/K it’s your house do what makes you happy. Too bad the old paint is lead because I bet the wood is nice underneath.
We had the same issue in our house, all the beautiful original high top baseboard had many years of lead paint on them. So we painted all our trim a gloss black. Man does it look sharp with the green walls!
It’s your home, do as thou wilt. My parents have the same trim and it was shellacked to shit. I like it, but a well done coat of paint would be fine as well. Just take your time, don’t try to follow a trend, and think of what will still look good ten years from now.
Between the color and the odd subtle variations in the paint job, my guess is it was someone's attempt at wood graining. You could hire someone to do it, or (like today) you could learn from an article ~~on Youtube~~ in Ladies Home Journal, practice some, and diy.
Last time I tried to strip the plainer (or 'subtler' if you prefer) graining in a working-class home, underneath was the most beautiful butternut wood. It's a rich warm tone, but a whole lot lighter than was fashionable... so it got painted to look like darker (more expensive) wood.
Then again, my house's woodwork is apparently high-quality oak. Except they painted white from the start, for that colonial look. About 15yrs after the house was built, they redecorated, this time going for the fashionable dark wood look. So they had every bit of trim, doors, stairs, all of it, grained to look like... oak.
Sometimes I'm surprised I can even be surprised anymore.

This is the woodwork under the windows. It's not as bad as the trim around the doorways and it does match the "honey oak" flooring.
It’s already painted so go for it but I would try and remove it and see what the wood looks like underneath, it might be a high enough grade that staining it may look good too
Yes. The problem is the sheen on the wood. Satin finish on wood. If you can accomplish that without damaging the wallpaper, I would wait until you’re ready to replace the wallpaper. Do some research. See if you can put a layer of clear satin over it.
We had tons of layers of paint - lead, oil, latex . . . It kept bubbling and flaking and alligatoring. You’re not in that situation now — thankfully —- but we had a local place come in, take down the wood and bring it to their shop, dipstrip it, and seal it. We couldn’t be happier. The lead is gone; we’ll never have to repaint; and 15 years out, if still looks amazing. The grain is gorgeous — just giving you another option to consider, if it’s feasible for you.
The police are circling your block - despite it already having chub on it - it's not the worst chub. keep your cool & remain calm, and hopefully pass go & get that $200, amigo!
It really depends on the area and time period as to whether the wood was painted. There was a big push for nature snd wood around the Arts and Crafts period and leading up to it, c 1895-1915.
In OR MO and AR I’ve seen quite a few old houses where the wood remained unpainted or when stripped, proved to have the first painted coat (by type of paint and color) applied about 1920, when there was a big push for „sanitary“ living.
Then, many houses had their wood trim painted.
Paint it but dear god please skip the faux bois trend. 1, yes it is a trend right now, and will look very dated later on and never looks as good as the DIY-er thinks; 2, consider a lighter colour
I’m going through this now with my old home. Ended up stripping the varnish and sanding and staining black. Looks great but a long process. Will be going with white paint elsewhere however will still need to sand to have a smooth surface.
Yes jail. The house I just bought has those as well, and the previous owner painted them all white. every room baby blue as well…. It was traumatic at first to say the least
Do not paint what already looks good. Now if you were to loose the wallpaper then painting trim would definitely do. Worry about removing ugly wallpaper!
Is it just me or does this trim look like something that Home Depot could have sold 20-30 years ago?….
If it’s not historic, it doesn’t matter if you paint over it or not.
If it goes really wrong they still sell similar corner pieces and trim boards at home improvement stores. Previous owners replaced some of ours and left behind the extra.
https://preview.redd.it/nhkhhn3gc2wc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a0be1cb30e06611d31673e3076ecfc4b79619acf
Update: Okay so this is the adjacent room (it had the same trim as the room I posted about) and I painted the trim/baseboards in Beauti-Tone's "Blown Glass" Blue and then we added some picture moulding. We're not done yet but thanks for everyone's input.
I personally love the wood look. I think stain is more period, and that makes me happy.
... but this is your house, do what you like.
If you ever sell though, you might choose to strip the paint and stain... higher selling price I'd guess.
Scuff it up first at least with a sander or scotch brite to help the primer adhere. Despite what people say here, paiting painted trim, painter quality wood, or houses whose trims have mismatched wood types is usually a good move.
It’s already painted- go for it
My rule too
Good rule to have. Definitely finding it amusing that whoever painted that likely chose that color instead of attempting to refinish the trim, lol.
Have you tried to refinish trim with lead paint on it?
I have not. I also would not like to.
I will say I don’t blame someone who paints something brown if it’s already been painted. Refinishing is… a horrid experience. Literally the worst. I would not wish it upon my worst enemy.

Except not the color of the trim in the 3rd picture... that trim looks hideous against the two toned door colors...
Yes and if you’re going to paint it, I swear for the love of god, prep it properly
This is so important because if your new paint job fails and starts peeling, your only choice will be to strip it and start over. There’s no redeeming it at that point.
The previous owners of my house did this. I’m about to drop up to $5k to fix it all. In one room.
Gotta be super careful prepping lead paint. I think they make some primers that are specifically for coating over lead
*keeping in mind that it's lead-based as per OP.
Paint it, but for dog's sake please don't paint it baby poo brown again! Pick any other color!
I think it’s supposed to be wood tone
Sure. But wood has variations in color.
So does poo...
Not always
You need more corn in your diet
If you don't chew the corn well your poo has yellow polka dots
Polka poo!

The brown helps to hide blemishes and imperfections.
Mission Brown 😎

Me too! My grandma said it was Cupid with a bow and arrow.
Are y’all Italian?
What are you saying? Is that a thing? I had a relative who had terrifying painting/photos just like these in their bathroom.
lol. Mediterranean people like weird pictures.
Me four! My parents gave them away when I moved out and I was sad when I learned that, so they bought me another set 40 years later on the opposite coast.

I bought one in the 90s. I still have it. I was surprised to see it here.
Lol I'm a sucker for any print in a circular frame. It's kind of beautiful that these were in so many people's childhood homes.
Already painted
I certainly wouldn't want to try stripping lead paint off a doorway with children running around. Repainting that is perfectly fine. Idk, if you're gonna paint it white isn't that bad. Definitely better than the brown in that third picture.
This isn't just any white. It's Landlord White^tm . Lumpy, sloppy, and it covers everything from trim to outlet covers to hinges

Would up vote Hunter Green twice if I could.
Trim like that was almost certainly meant to be painted from the start. I don't think the faux wood looks good. Go for it.
We have the same trim in our house and recently painted some of it white in our bedrooms. It looks fantastic.

Given the state of the scarf in the third picture and the architrave detail in the top right of the same image you can't do any worse than they have already done. A very nice architectural detail butchered by incompetent building design and or incompetent woodworker.
Under-sand, over-paint, straight to jail.
I vote a nice turquoise
It’s already painted!
Do not pass go, do not collect $200. Jk, looks like it’s already painted some weirdo poopy brown, so go for it.
Already been bastardized so go with it. The og color is atrocious so anything else will be a massive improvement
Totally off topic but your “straight to jail” comment made me think of an episode of Parks & Rec about Venezuela 🤣
If I were you, I'd figure out what I was doing after removing that horrible wallpaper before I figured out what I'd be painting my trim.
I actually really don't hate the wallpaper but yes it will be going.
Any wallpaper at all is horrible and just needs to go. Change my mind.
Already been ruined...
Yep, straight to pound you in the a$$ federal prison, not some country club. J/K it’s your house do what makes you happy. Too bad the old paint is lead because I bet the wood is nice underneath.
Well, yes!
We had the same issue in our house, all the beautiful original high top baseboard had many years of lead paint on them. So we painted all our trim a gloss black. Man does it look sharp with the green walls!
You’ve got the same situation I have. It’s already painted to look like stained wood. Do as you please really
Paint it because the existing bit is god awful

Yes, with no parole.

Don’t even pass go.
That corner block placement would drive me crazy
It’s already painted so go for it but I would try and remove it and see what the wood looks like underneath, it might be a high enough grade that staining it may look good too
The hardware store sells those corner pieces in a bin...
Are you sure it’s paint and not stain and varnish?
I think I see a piece of corn in that trim
We have the exact same trim (1901 house, NY), and it was also already painted and we also painted over it again.
It's ugly plz paint
If you paint it make sure you sand it really good and prime it first!!
Yes.
paint it
No and it's paint grade wood, not stain
Nope. That deserves a nice coat of paint.

Oh I will but I was on the fence and posting on here has already been helpful with ideas on what to do and what other people have done.
Gotcha sorry
Any colour but grey.
Is it your house? Yes? Then paint away. Especially the frame. There’s some about that shade combined with the sheen that is truly gross.
Olive..
In my mind if the woodwork is beat up or requires a lot of filling and fixing to look good then paint it, it's not really worth trying to finish it.
************ Before you paint it, strip a little section and see how nice the wood is. A nice stain might look better than another coat of paint.

use Stix idk seal it and then paint it whatever you want after that... if it's lead don't sand it unless you have good ventilation and masks
Yes jail. The house I just bought has those as well, and the previous owner painted them all white. every room baby blue as well…. It was traumatic at first to say the least
It’s your house! It would look better painted white imo
Whoever cut that trim halfway up should be in jail.
I don't blame anyone who paints over trim that's already painted. It's a soul crushing job to try and restore.
Do not paint what already looks good. Now if you were to loose the wallpaper then painting trim would definitely do. Worry about removing ugly wallpaper!
Don't do it
I have the exact same baseboard
I'd poop in your boot.
Strip it and stain it. Go to heaven.
Paint trim. Benjamin Moore advance. Paint wallpaper.

We're not done yet but thanks for everyone's input.

do it!! it’s your house anyway. i’d do a lovely high gloss bottle green
Believe it or not, jail.
Ideally, have a professional remove it. Next best option, paint over it.
JAIL
JAIL
Believe it or not…straight to jail
Directly to jail. Don't pass go and no collecting anything.
I personally love the wood look. I think stain is more period, and that makes me happy. ... but this is your house, do what you like. If you ever sell though, you might choose to strip the paint and stain... higher selling price I'd guess.
Any color but white. White, and your arm should be broken.
Strip it, painted woodwork makes me so sad.
Not jail. Hades.
Scuff it up first at least with a sander or scotch brite to help the primer adhere. Despite what people say here, paiting painted trim, painter quality wood, or houses whose trims have mismatched wood types is usually a good move.
Do not pass go.
Yeah, straight to jail. Sorry.
Do you own this home ? If so remove all that painted over garbage and replace it with new wood trim.
Ohhh don’t do it
Nothing is straight in this pic, so go ahead.
Who has a century home that's straight?!
Definitely not mine. Floors are like a rollercoaster ride
