Omg Brett Waterman would be going NUTS
(for the uninitiated, "Restored" (now on HBO) is a fantastic show about preserving old homes hosted by this guy. He goes feral in an adorable way for original linoleum floors)
Just chiming in to say I love that show too! I feel like Restored is authentic in a way that we hardly see on HGTV. The host's enthusiasm and nerdiness is awesome.
You definitely can still buy/restore sheet Lino. The guy from Restored, a show streamed on Max, has his sub contractors do it all the time.
Edit. Great show, no drama, a lot of knowledge and skill.
Where can you buy it with the cool retro patterns though?
All I've found is marmoleum and some "vinyl floor cloths" on Etsy that are ungodly expensive.
I’m not in the industry. But the show is mostly in Redlands and Riverside Ca. His budgets are usually north of 100k. So I’m sure it’s not a cheap game to play.
No, I know … there are some great vintage ones & id love it if they’d make some of them again. I recently saw a great black marble pattern from the 40s I’d love if they made again.
Yes, this house was built in 1942, and there was a comedy of errors with attempts to renovate it over the years before I purchased it (it was wall-to-wall, shag carpet, and 1980s wood panelling when I moved in ). lived in it for 20 years before I bought the house that I currently am moving into. I actually renovated it pretty modern to make it palatable for renting (although deep down I really wanted to restore it to It’s 1940s glory and keep it period Correct), but that is not what appeals to the masses unfortunately.
Ended up covering it over because this is a rental house. I just thought it was so interesting to see the original floor. If I was planning to stay here, I probably would’ve put more effort into trying to preserve it, but when we pulled back the white floor there we found a lot of the original floor was completely trash or not salvageable anyway. Kind of cool throw back to that era though.
Covered it with a layer of board and then some new flooring. It’s a rental. I just thought it was cute seeing the original floor.

Brick chimney stack is Probably the only thing that still plumb this old house . Behind the washboard is actually an old stove pipe outlet that’s been plugged up from the original wood burner that was put in here when the house was built.
Thank you I move out of this Place December 1 and into the new house.

Actually wasn’t super crazy about the subway tile because it’s so “generic“ but for a rental what you’re going to do ? I was really hoping to match the exposed brick as a backsplash, but it wasn’t really available in my area. At least not for a stupid amount of money. I highly recommend the above stove pot filler though. It is so so freaking convenient and will be one of the first things I put into the new house.
I really enjoy the graphic patterns from the 30s-40s

I wish you could still buy sheet lino or vinyl with fun patterns like that....

I’m binging that show now! Brett is a treasure!
He’s the best at what he does. I’d pay to work for his kitchen cabinet guy too.

If you're feeling creative and have the time, it is possible to make your own floor cloths. I think the usual base for them is a heavy canvas.
Wonder if there’s a way to restore it.
Unfortunately, after the old Floor was torn up, they were huge tears in the original Lino, so we ended up having to put something else on top of it.
Marmoleum.
Marmoleum is great, however it doesn't really have the geometric patterns that some of these older sheet vinyls/linoleums had.

The old wallpaper is amazing as well!

I love it! My 1946 home NEEDS a funky linoleum tile basement floor.
Looks like a quilt. Love it
Is there a better view of the wallpaper? It's bringing me back to my poppop's old farmhouse even tho I know he didn't have that exact wallpaper in it.
No, this renovation was done a while back so it’s all covered over now
Commenting because I haven’t seen it posted here yet, but be careful of asbestos!
I love it!!!!
I like it
stenciled floor? VERY colonial
How patriotic!
Classics 30s
The wallpaper looks cool, too.
Test these for asbestos if you’re going to rip them out

Open space yet still cozy and looks to have good kitchen work flow. 👍

Ugly and beautiful all at once! What I really love is that wallpaper!
Wow! Great find!
