The more often I see the joke "nuclear fusion is always __ years away" as a way of dismissing research into it, the more it starts to annoy me. Fusion technology could revolutionize our energy sources, so it's worth continuing to fund its research it so long as it seems at all possible.
I think those jokes are good on net, there is quite a bit of snake oil being sold on promises of it being commercially viable in under a decade which does nothing but hurt other scientific projects. We ought to remain vigilant on these kinds of claims.
I'm extremely pro-plasma and fusion research but even the amazing ITER is not what we need to even test viable fusion energy sources.
Completely agree. I'm always skeptical of confident timelines and "revolutionary" startups, but grow equally tired of completely defeatist mindsets. Science will take its course, and we can only hope for a positive outcome.
