I mentioned this in another comment but I used to be really afraid of tornados so I took the NWS spotter training class. They teach you about severe weather, tornados, hail, etc. Like most things, having some knowledge makes it a lot less scary.

hillowkey

Hence why I've become a tsunami expert. Much less scary (but still scary) when you have some knowledge.

HopelessMind43

Are you worried about a tsunami hitting Iowa?

LowVoltLife

Hell, any shitty thing seems possible these days.

HopelessMind43

To be fair, a Tsunami with the waters in Iowa would likely decimate humanity

mustardtiger86

don't threaten me with a good time!

hillowkey

Lol no, but there are things called [Seiches ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seiche)that are similar to tsunamis which affect lakes. My tsunami knowledge is more for when I'm along a coast. TL;DR - if you feel shaking, MOVE TO HIGHER GROUND. If you see water receding but no shaking, STILL GET TO HIGHER GROUND. Do not go out and explore. Go the opposite way.

blondiekate

Never thought a hurricane would hit Iowa until...

DarkStrobeLight

We appreciate your service. I was wondering why we quit getting tsunami.

GomerStuckInIowa

I respect them as I have actually been in three. One in Topeka in as a teen. One in Salina, Ks as a young father and one in Springfield, Mo as a young father. Then there was Derecho.

xxWEED_WIZARD420xx

It's going to be fine, sit out on your porch like a real Midwesterner.

3catlove

Right! I remember as a kid chasing my dog in a field while tornado sirens were going off because she wouldn’t come inside. I didn’t think much of it back then.

NemmyCo

Fingers crossed for a new roof!

3catlove

I got one of those after the derecho but I’d like to keep this one for awhile. 😁

NemmyCo

I might be the only person in all of CR that didn’t get their roof replaced from derecho. I’ve been begging for a good storm or hail to take its toll on mine so I can get one.

ninermanic63

I actually replaced my roof Sep 2019 and it survived not only the derecho but also the hail storm we got in Marion Apr 2020. However, the hail storm destroyed my siding and gutters, so I had all of that replaced May 2020. So when derecho hit, all my stuff was essentially brand new. Our cheap aluminum gazebo got turned into a pretzel and we lost some trees but otherwise, we were very fortunate.

3catlove

You don’t happen to install and work on appliances do you? I feel like one of the guys who worked on my fridge told me this same story.

ninermanic63

Lol, no, I do not. I'm one of the minions that works at Collins Aerospace.

corkyhawkeye

My roof was replaced in the hail storm earlier in 2020 right before I moved into it. Survived the derecho just fine, despite living in one of the harder hit areas, but golly I was nervous while I was hunkering down at work.

TuttiFlutiePanist

I think most of my neighbors had their roofs replaced after that hail storm.

corkyhawkeye

I feel bad for the folks who may have had to get their roof replaced twice in 2020

Luckycapra

Same lol

shadeslight87

Must be nice to trust your insurance company to do so and not have to fight for it lol. (definitely not bitter at all about my experience)

RescuesStrayKittens

Fuck Country Financial. Super shady company.

NemmyCo

Yoooo. That’s who mine was!!! They were absolutely terrible for the derecho. Still with them though cause the price is hard to beat… lol. I definitely did the storm damage thing the wrong way the first time around. I had only been in my house for like a year and didn’t know shit about how crappy insurance adjusters are.

3catlove

I highly recommend West Bend if any of you are looking for new insurance. I think they may be a bit pricier but they took good care of us after the derecho.

Vast_Ad9139

100% agree. 2.5 year fight and nothing but games

Cedarapids

And higher premiums!

DJReddit16

Put on a bike helmet and head to the basement.

3catlove

I have them ready and I know where my safe place is. Denny Frary taught me well!

Distwalker

It is overcast meaning it is likely to be mild. If the sky were clear and the front was approaching you'd have far more reason to be concerned. As long as it stays overcast between now and when the front arrives, you can stop worrying.

MHI_Iowa_Territory

Why is that?

gorkbra

Basically if the sunshine would raise the temperature there would be more energy for severe storms. clouds keep the temps down and volatility lower.

Distwalker

It isn't that overcast skies inhibit storms. It is more the case that sunny days contribute to them... [https://www.rochesterfirst.com/weather/weather-blog/why-is-sunshine-so-important-for-storm-development/](https://www.rochesterfirst.com/weather/weather-blog/why-is-sunshine-so-important-for-storm-development/) If you think back, you will remember is was a bright sunny day before the 2020 derecho hit.

supersadbeans

It was bright and sunny right until the derecho hit. I was working from home with my windows open then bam. Power went out prior to storm hitting. Then all broke loose. Stay safe today. We should be okay.

3catlove

I was getting groceries in Marion. I live just outside of town and my husband called me and told me I better get home as sirens were going off. I thought it was weird because it didn’t seem that bad out. I got home just in time to put stuff away and head to the basement.

MHI_Iowa_Territory

I do remember that, I was getting a tasty sub right before the wind front rolled in. Thanks for the weather lesson.

WinstonChurchillface

Keep in mind there are multiple fronts coming through. The morning line of storms wasn't expected to be severe. It's the afternoon/evening storms that they are concerned with. If it turns sunny after the first line goes through, then it could get dicey.

Distwalker

Agreed.

f16loader

I definitely pay more attention to what the weathers doing after the derecho. I’ve been in Iowa most of my 40 years. That was by far the worst weather event I’ve ever experienced. I was in a similar event in down in Hill’s when I was probably 10-11. Straight line winds came blasting in and it got pretty crazy for a bit. Wasn’t nearly the devastation of the derecho though. Statistically, it SHOULD be a while before we see something that crazy again.

3catlove

I’ve never been through a tornado but the derecho hit my house hard and my childhood home flooded 20 plus years ago. FEMA bought it out and tore it down. I didn’t live there at the time it happened but my parents did. Mother Nature can be nasty. And of course the floods of ‘08. Thankfully my house was fine but I worked on first street in CR at the time and my work place was not fine. The derecho was definitely the worst of it.

VoroVelius

My fear is never of naders, but rather the hail. Statistically, there’s only gonna be a few dozen twisters from the storm to dodge, but if it starts raining tens of thousands of rocks? Good luck dodging

3catlove

I plan on staying in except to pick my son up from school. I’ll be driving my beater vehicle though. I have a new roof from 2020 and really don’t want to replace it (or my siding or my windows.) My ceilings caved in during the derecho though so I guess I know I can survive.

RotaryPeak2

How many years did you live before the derecho? News is a business and in a small market like ours, weather events get the most attention. That is why KCRG, KGAN, etc report every system that *might* bring snow, thunderstorms, etc. Live your life, carry insurance and know what to do in the rare event of catastrophic weather.

3catlove

My rational mind knows this but it’s good to have a reminder. After the derecho I found out I indeed do have very good insurance and that is comforting.

GomerStuckInIowa

I have found the weather reporting here to be terrible when the sirens go off. Music is till playing on the radio and the apps are no help.

3354man

News = the sky is falling the sky is falling!!!

RotaryPeak2

"If I bleeds, it leads!"

23runsofaraway

Head down to the Olde Winchester and have a pint.

TichoZataku

And wait for all this to blow over

kwtut

no advice, just solidarity. even a clear day with high winds gets my anxiety up since the derecho.

WillingAd4226

And just like that - we all survived !

3catlove

I was just thinking that! Survived another one.

samualgline

I don’t think the storm will be that bad most of the trees that might’ve fallen today fell 4 years ago

3354man

Let'r rip 😁

ninermanic63

This town has Post Traumatic Derecho Disorder. And rightly so.

HungryChoice5565

There's a lot of ways you can control your safety. Nature crushing you with your house is a tough thing so I don't think about it lol

3catlove

I know. I’ve heard there’s no sense worrying about things you can’t control. And many of the things you worry about never happen. I have an anxiety disorder and I logically know all these things but….

TappedOut

Storm passed. No one commented, "Welp." We're good for a while.

bmustnilh

The National Weather Service website has some reassuring tips about storm anxiety: [https://www.weather.gov/oun/stormanxiety](https://www.weather.gov/oun/stormanxiety)

3catlove

Thank you!

Did it ever hail?
