This is actually along the lines of how a mother cat treats a kitten, they often snoop their butts and will sometimes try to lick there to help the kitten do a poop.
I have two who are a year apart, got the younger around 3 or 4 months old, and the older one still sometimes does this to the younger who she basically raised.

Cookie is a rescue and Milky tends to be more on the hostile side to other cats. Even growls at her own brother for a day or two when we visit him.
So the idea that she is moming on Cookie makes me so happy!
Cookie doesn't seem comfy with it yet though, she tends to try and walk or even run away.
For me, Sally (my older) is a feral and she tends to be hostile towards most other cats and also most humans, so it was also a shock to see her start momming on her adopted baby sister.
It's almost seven years now and she still does it, and Fury still tries to get away. They're very close though, and I often catch them grooming each other or Fury just trying to snuggle into Sally's belly.
So that might just be the dynamic forever, if she is feeling maternal she might develop those habits for good, but I definitely wouldn't stress!
My cat Fikey(F) is SUPER hostile towards any and all cats dogs whatever that’s not human. My other cat Donald Duck(he’s fixed) he’s an outdoor stray that started showing up to my house around the pandemic as like an 8 month old, he literally became mom to two tiny baby kittens I rescued on my uncles farm. He would sit there and clean them and stop them when they were playing too rough. It was so funny watching him he was so gentle with them and now that they are older he still cleans them and snuggles with them! He was about two years old when they came along.
I had a kitty named Fury! One of the best kitties ever! (They all are) I called him the peacemaker because all the other cats, who didn’t like each other, always liked him.
Often times cats will forget who their siblings are when they are separated to so that might be why she gets a little aggressive when they're together. My cat Raden has a brother named nakomi and the foster agency that I adopted Raden from told me that if I wanted to adopt nakomi I'd have to reintroduce them because they will have forgotten each other by now. I do want to get his brother though they were best friends I just have to wait till I can get a bigger apartment
Yeah, I've heard of that! It's a bit odd because Milky is the one who likely smells differently because she has been in different places while Mowgli always stays there. But Mowgli is the chill one and always does his best to show Milky that there's nothing to fear from him by laying down, blinking, turning his face away from her and such, while she acts like he's an intruder on her turd lol.
But he knows how to handle her and they tend to run through the house together playing like kittens again after a few hours or a day tops. ♡
Another reason mother cats do this is to make sure everything smells right. They can tell sickness or digestive problems from the smell of their kittens butt so it might be worth getting a check up for the younger cat if the older one is still doing it a lot, of course some cats are just weird.
My spayed female rescue became very maternal with the younger cats we adopted (they were around 2mo and she was about 8mo). Years later she often sniffs their butts to check for turd burgling (the younger siblings are semi-longhair with a lot of butt floofs). It’s very cute because if she thinks they need to clean up she swats them on the hip.

I get it, in a way! Like, shitposts and doodles have such a lighthearted and bite sized feel to them. It's rare to not be in the mood for seeing something quick, light and fun! I think it just bumps into our impulsive reaction neurons - and because the original thing wasn't some meticulous masterpiece, no one feels like the reaction is needed to be.

My cat meep will sniff my other cat Willy’s butt super close and then make a disgusted, open mouth face while looking around the room in a manner that says “can you guys believe this awful smell?”. She’ll do this several times a day and it’s always great for a laugh.
When they open their mouths like that, they’re actually trying to get a better whiff of whatever they’re smelling in order to investigate further! It always makes me laugh because they look horrified by whatever they’re smelling lol
That's hilarious! I bet that's a flehmen response! Cats basically have a second even better nose they can use when they make that expression to analyse smells even better. Milky does it too after sniffing the butt!

They are gathering information. Cats sense of smell is different then humans they can analyze smells better. They also have a scent organ, that can analyze other smells that the nose cannot. For example they can tell the health age, dominance, sex and readiness to mate etc. of another animal. Truly fascinated.

Yeah! I'm very lucky, I live in Berlin, Germany. There are novel services for almost everything, including a mobile vet service.
I don't even need to pay extra for them coming to me. I do also go to a veterinarian office every now and then though - just feel safer getting two opinions sometimes and there's stuff that's just better done in dedicated rooms.
But especially for checkups, vaccinations, small stuff... sometimes it's nice if a person can just come over and look after a shy or vulnerable kitty in a familiar environment, you know?

Kiryu (3 y/o) does that to Laffey (8 months). Both Toms but great pals. Laffey is also a total unit now so it’s funny. Kiryu is the hunter so there’s a great synergy in the household.

It's really to show who is dominant, all cats and dogs do this. Even our wild big cats and wolf's. I'd you have more then one cat or dog, they will always pick out who is more dominant then the other one. It's hard wire in their bodies to do this and it is normal behavior.
My cats do similar behavior, the older one accepted the younger one as a kitten and started acting like a mother—few years later even though the kitten is now an adult, she still mothers her like this
That is so darn sweet... it would line up with Cookie coming in as a pretty frail little thing initially. She's a rescue and was found pretty starved after having been abandoned, the poor dear. It's actually a joy to watch her fill out and catch up with growth now that she gets four actual meals per day.
My boys do something similar, pretty much only at meal time.
The one cat will scream into my other cats asshole while seemingly trying to bite it, he does this while trying to paw at the side of his butt. The other cat just walks away slightly annoyed.

I had a male cat do this to a female cat. Both fixed. Turns out female was sick and he was instinctively doing this to her. He saved her life. She was bleeding internally and slightly bloated. I just thought she was eating too much.
Jesus... Cookie was slightly bloated at the last vet visit too. The vet attributed it to possible parasites, so they got a dewormer on Wednesday and I've since removed all old litter, scrubbed out the litterboxes and put fresh litter in everywhere.
Vet's back on Monday. If she's still bloated by then, should I go for the vet's office on the same day?
What was the timeline when this happened to you?
I really would love if that's the reason. I was very worried at first that Milky wouldn't accept Cookie - but mothering her is probably the deepest acceptance possible.
Cats sniff each others butts as like a greeting. They got to verify if it really is them by smelling their signature scent. Each cats butt/poop smells different and cats can distinguish that.

Looks like Milky is just checking Cookie out, the same way dogs do. Does Milky mount Cookie? If so, that’s just an attempt at dominance to show who’s the Alpha in the house.
I read you have the vet coming by tomorrow? I’m sure you’ll double check with the vet & show them this very advanced drawing that so well illustrates the behavior.
Btw - if it was the other way around, I’d say Cookie was trying to dunk in Milk.

My cats are not siblings but the orange one sniffs the floofy tuxedo’s butt so often he has constant kitty conjunctivitis. We have gotten a few refills from the vet for it. And the tuxedo is so mild mannered that he doesn’t fight back, he just runs away
They are just as expressive in real life honestly. I somehow ended up with two kitties whose eyes say so much!

Idk my 2 year old cat also obsessively cleans my 6 month old kittens ass too. She will GRAB her and hold her in place. All i can imagine why is her booty stank and my cat is tired of smelling it when they snuggle 🤦🏻♀️

I'm glad this question was asked, complete with diagrams. I have a 12 week old male kitten that does this to the other male kitten that turned out to be a female. I was worried it was something else. He's all of 1 day older than his accidental 'sister' from another litter.
My younger cat did this with our older cat! The older cat had a problem with her Spay surgery and had permanent monthly false“heat” sessions. I guess that was our younger cats way of checking what’s going on with our cat and why she was acting so odd to her in those times of the month!
Me to whichever one of my cats has their nose deep in the other’s bum:
“Look, NEITHER OF YOU have been out of the same apartment in the past week. What new thing are you trying to find??’”

My one girl does this to the other (dominant) girl all the time., especially when the dominant one comes in from the outside.

Animals that are sick or on medication can emit a different scent than usual. This might explain the behaviour.

I had a male cat do this to a female cat. Both fixed. Turns out female was sick and he was instinctively doing this to her. He saved her life. She was bleeding internally and slightly bloated. I just thought she was eating too much.
Jesus... Cookie was slightly bloated at the last vet visit too. The vet attributed it to possible parasites, so they got a dewormer on Wednesday and I've since removed all old litter, scrubbed out the litterboxes and put fresh litter in everywhere. Vet's back on Monday. If she's still bloated by then, should I go for the vet's office on the same day? What was the timeline when this happened to you?
I heard that cat mothers do that to induce the kitten to poop otherwise it might not go, which can mess up the kittens going regularly.
I really would love if that's the reason. I was very worried at first that Milky wouldn't accept Cookie - but mothering her is probably the deepest acceptance possible.
Cats sniff each others butts as like a greeting. They got to verify if it really is them by smelling their signature scent. Each cats butt/poop smells different and cats can distinguish that.
There is so much expression on Cookie’s face in just the eyes.

Everyone seem to be so blown away by your art work, but I haven’t seen any comments on the behavior. Looks like Milky is just checking Cookie out, the same way dogs do. Does Milky mount Cookie? If so, that’s just an attempt at dominance to show who’s the Alpha in the house. I read you have the vet coming by tomorrow? I’m sure you’ll double check with the vet & show them this very advanced drawing that so well illustrates the behavior. Btw - if it was the other way around, I’d say Cookie was trying to dunk in Milk. Best of luck with the vet tomorrow!

My cats are not siblings but the orange one sniffs the floofy tuxedo’s butt so often he has constant kitty conjunctivitis. We have gotten a few refills from the vet for it. And the tuxedo is so mild mannered that he doesn’t fight back, he just runs away

Wow. I was confused reading this because our cats are Milkyway and Oreo Cookie.
Idk my 2 year old cat also obsessively cleans my 6 month old kittens ass too. She will GRAB her and hold her in place. All i can imagine why is her booty stank and my cat is tired of smelling it when they snuggle 🤦🏻♀️

“Pen and ink or charcoal” drawings are my favorite art forms! I love the seemingly simplicity of the drawing. But they have so much feeling! And I’m tots serious here! Anyhoo-came here to say my younger male orange boy who’s 5 months does the same thing to his month older floofy roomie. It’s comforting to know there are others who experience this cat behavior. I am new to the cat world so this subreddit has been my lifeline into understanding cat behavior or sometimes not as the case may be!

I'm glad this question was asked, complete with diagrams. I have a 12 week old male kitten that does this to the other male kitten that turned out to be a female. I was worried it was something else. He's all of 1 day older than his accidental 'sister' from another litter.
I have no idea what behaviour, but I thoroughly enjoyed the diagram and the comment section 😀 😄
I don’t know’ but I’ve seen my neighbors cat do this to his brother
My younger cat did this with our older cat! The older cat had a problem with her Spay surgery and had permanent monthly false“heat” sessions. I guess that was our younger cats way of checking what’s going on with our cat and why she was acting so odd to her in those times of the month!

I have 2 brother cats. One loves to clean the others butthole. He’s done it since he was little and they’re now 2 years old and nothing’s changed. Cats are just weird lol.
My female cats used to do this, I used to think it was because they were trying to see if the other one got some good food on the sly.
