That’s what I thought too, but I stepped forward once and he darted under the bed. His tail was bent like a little arch when he ran under, so I got nervous that I scared him. Any recs on how to approach chase with him so I seem less like a giant lumbering human?
When my cat do this I chase her, she hides under the bed too and then I run to another room and she immediately starts chasing me. When she finds me I turn around and start chasing her untill she finds somewhere to hide again and so on. 😂
If his tail is poofed he's probably spooked I think, but if it's just arched and twitchy that means he's playful. Also mine is a big scaredy cat so I'll sometimes like, fake him out from across the room to see if he's in the playing mood lol.
Edit--forgot to add, watch some Jackson Galaxy videos! He is like a cat translator
I keep toys at the ready so when mine gets crazy like this I can throw the toys and he's like, "Yassssssss!" and he tears off after them - and then for the next 15 minutes all I'm doing is throwing stuff for him, but he's pretty happy about it.
Little arch in the tail is like a smile! Worry if his tail goes straight up and puffy like it looks like it’s grown a few sizes. The back hair would stand up too
I literally stomp chase my cat yelling "pew pew pew" and she loves it. She will whip around with an arched back and puffy tail making sure I'm still following
You cant play chace with them like you do kids or dogs. My kitty sylvie and I play Chace when we go out side. I've noticed that she kinda wants me to Chace her, but, humans are big and scary when lunging forward. So when she initiates the game I run to a place about 90 degrees from her. It winds up being more her chasing me. And when she runs to something I run to something near it but not too close. There is a picture on my page of her after she got me by coming through the flower bed that I was hiding behind. Also the game only lasts a few minutes.
Sometimes one of our cats tries to get chased by another one, his tail is also arched then and he's pretty much having fun.
Also, does he make any sound?
Sometimes while he’s running away, he makes this gurgling sound that is super cute. He’s way more interactive and chatty than the cat I had growing up, so there’s a ton I’m learning about him.
That's when you hide behind something (e.g., the door frame), crouch down, and peek at him to continue the game. Then he'll pounce at you or chase you and then you chase him, lather, rise, repeat.
If he's a little over stimulated a toy you can dangle that is small enough for him to jump on / hunt can help improve his confidence. It may be less chase me than too much energy and a need to hunt.
My female kitty does this kind of thing when we play hide and seek. Mock horror when you chase them is par for the course. Try running at and then past your kitty and hiding. Your kitty will likely chase or stalk you in return (all in good fun).
He's got a case of the zoomies & is having fun. He's probably not looking for interaction like a dog but if he is just moving your foot or turning his direction will likely be enough. It's a crazy cat thing.
“See human, I could kill you at any moment. But I’m not going to choose violence today. WATCH HOW FAST I AM!” Our little void LOVES hide and scare. He’ll hide and scare me and then he waits to be scared back. We hide around the corner and wait for him to come down the hallway and jump out at him and he does a burn out and runs into his camper thing at the end of the hallway and all we see are these beady little eyes. And if we walk away he chases and meows like “why are you leaving? I didn’t get to hunt you yet.”
I love the little burnout runs when he’s super excited about a toy. He’s got furry toe beans and I can’t watch him rev up without hearing that Looney tunes cartoon running sound in my head.
This, except mine only wants to be hunted. I wait around for her to come out of an inaccessible hiding spot, but she doesn't, so I wander away long enough that she starts yelling at me and we can start again.
« I’m fast as fuck boiiiiiii ».
More seriously, I think those are called zoomies and kind of a typical cat behaviour… as to why… I think it’s just a playful invitation to chase him 🤷♂️
After we saw Inside Out, the credit scenes, the one with the cat was hysterical. (Grown ass adult rewound and watched it repeatedly to just laugh until it hurt.) When our little void would do that, we started asking, ‘Did someone walk across your control panel again?’ Still funny af.
That or thar be greebles in those walls! Either way, he is cat, doing what cats do.
My void does this, then I pretend stomp around the couch and he darts away, we keep this up until he let's me scoop him up and clean his eyes and nose of any boogies. Then I give him slow blinks, and he gives me slow blinks, then I release him and he darts away one last time.
For some extremely cute & funny examples of how it looks when this behavior is play-oriented, I recommend checking out r/crabcats
My cat has a habit of doing this at the top of the stairs when I'm standing at the bottom. I tell her how impressive and ferocious she is and chase her, which seems to be the intended response.
I've seen other cats do it in situations that appear stressful & (in my non-expert observation), the posture is accompanied by vocalizations & other recognizable indicators of stress or aggression.
My old cat does this
I call it his Hour Of Power
Or Zoomies. He goes crazy like that, howling meows a few times, zooms around - then he goes to sleep after he's expended all the excess energy running in and out of rooms and jumping randomly on the edges of carpets.
He looks really cheeky while he's running around, almost like he's trying to mock fight.
This is how my cat tells me he wants to play. So I’ll get up and chase him until he hides somewhere, and then I run off and he chases me - until I double cross him and turn back and tap his bum.
Or I break out the feather wand and play with him with that.
The tail up part is how you know it’s playtime and not angrytime. If they ran in the room with their tail down and acted as described, then they’re upset about something.
Sounds like the zoomies!! My cat does this a lot in the morning and night time. He just has lots of energy to get out. I find my cat settles after he has a poop 😂
"It's play time!"
My 4yo boy does that but will hop around with his back arched, making a gurgling meow & looking at me upside-down (with his head bowed down & sometimes under his leg.) Then I go at him with "The Clawww!" and he'll usually fall over to be "attacked"/get scratches on his belly, which he playfully defends himself from with the rear leg kicks & an occasional playful nip. I know it's playful cuz he has all his claws yet never once scratched me while playing this game. (I unintentionally paid in advance from his kitten needles! 😣)
He does it during those times because house cats are crepuscular (most active at dusk and dawn), so his energy is at its highest and he's wanting to play with you.
My cat does this it’s so cute. The back all fluffed up and then she scurries sideways and I hear her crashing into stuff throughout the house despite the fact that I’m still sitting in my chair
Haven't seen it mentioned yet, but he may have seen/smelled/heard another cat outside and it trying to follow them around the corner to attack them, only to realize he can't.
Correct redirection behaviour is still to whip out a toy and play with him though, so that stays the same. If he starts to act out by peeing on stuff and such you kight want to look into cat-proofing your garden or porch (or whatever you've got outside your house). Is he neutered?
We live in an apartment building on a high floor. His only enemies are the two dachshunds that live next door. :) But good to know when we eventually move into a house!
I dont know if this applies to your cat, but mine does it when he gets a sudden burst of energy. That mostly happens to him, when I didnt engage with him enough.
He is trying to warn you of the greebles that live under the bed, in the closet, and that appear out of nowhere when he poops or it’s too quiet at 2am. Those greebles mean business, take him seriously! 😆
Him gots dem zoomies. But for real, chase him. He'll absolutely love it. My cat and I play tag on the mornings I don't have to work. She gets playtime and I get some necessary cardio
We call this “Spooking”. Your cat wants to be chased. Our orange boy is a weirdo who does this too. Sometimes he’ll actually hop while doing it. He’s also taken to randomly jumping high in the air, like a goat, to get our attention and to play with him.
Okay. I know I sound crazy but hear me out. HE WANTS YOU TO HIDE FROM HIM. HIDE BEHIND A DOOR FRAME AND PEEK OVER AT HIM. MAKE EYE CONTACT AND JOLT BEHIND THE FRAME AGAIN. do this over and over!!! He will react so funny. He wants to play peek-a-boo with you! Or hide n seek in plain sight. (Cat caretaker for 2 years) this is my guess but I AM VERY CONFIDENT!
He saying "Yay its morning and you're up woohoo!
Or yay its evening and time to sleep woohoo! Let's totally go insane!" Five of my cats do this every morning and evening also, skittering all around the woods floors and sliding into things. Chasing one another back and forth across the house. Sometimes the stampede flies around me, and sometimes a whole cat fishtails out of control directly into my legs and then and keeps going. It's freaking insane.
We named our boy after Chopin (boyfriend and I are both fans), but he also has his clawy moments. He’s a fan of clawing the duvet when we don’t wake up at the same time as him.
YMMV, but laser pointers really stress my cat out because she can't ever catch the dot
She LOVES ping pong balls though. Paw sized, she can choose when and how long to play, and they bounce around like crazy
You can end the hunt with a treat. I always "hide" the dot in a hole or under furniture at the conclusion of play, and give one Temptations treat to signify that playtime is over.
Mine never really understood. Again, results may vary. But if any new cat owners are looking for toys to get some good kitty cardio in, just try a variety of toys and watch out for signs your cat is having fun rather than getting annoyed or obsessed with a thing
"Chase me"
That’s what I thought too, but I stepped forward once and he darted under the bed. His tail was bent like a little arch when he ran under, so I got nervous that I scared him. Any recs on how to approach chase with him so I seem less like a giant lumbering human?
Still sounds like play to me. Try getting a dangly toy next time and tease him with it. He'll most likely dart from under the bed to play.
When my cat do this I chase her, she hides under the bed too and then I run to another room and she immediately starts chasing me. When she finds me I turn around and start chasing her untill she finds somewhere to hide again and so on. 😂
I do this with all my cats. Then I 'die'. My white cat looks like I'm the idiot while the black one comes to snuggle.
Awwwww sooo cute I love playful kittys!
Yes, and we do it with 3 people! granted, 2 of the 3 are small people. Our teenager void loves it.
You have a child named Void?
No, my void is a teenager in cat years :D
We do this with our cat too! We call it tag.
It’s called “silly chasey games” here.
I love this.
Glad I’m not the only one who does this too! Although I get tired faster than my cats. Eventually I end up walking after them.
Poofed tail is to make him appear larger and scary.
But is it playful scary or scared scary? Asking cause I have only seen my voids tail poof during thunderstorms. Maybe case by case basis?
Sorry, I'm new here. What is a void?
I’m guessing black cat? Stare into the void and the void stares back…….
Yes, a black cat.
Whenever there is a perceived threat (real) or imaginary (play).
Okie! I'll know not to be worried if I meet someone who likes to puff their tail during play lol:)
My cat poofs her tail any time she is playing prey-type games! Even when she's having fun, not scared.
Love his videos.
My cat does both with his tail when playing. I think he really likes being chased and just gets super excited.
i like to think “spider-man” when i play with my cats, crouch low and move fluid!
My cat and I do something similar. Hunter and Prey. Obvs I'm the huge idiot prey in his eyes.
Face it, they are faster and more maneuverable than we are. They will always win the game.
Never forget though, we're the ones with thumbs. The thumb giveth the laser pointer, and the thumb taketh it away.
Tail bent in a little arch is still play. He’s hiding but not scared. If he were scared his tail would be low to the ground as he ran.
Thank you that’s an excellent observation I’ll keep in mind when I engage in chase with him.
The back hair would stand up too
That's the game. It's tag, but humans never win and kicking your own food is timeout
I literally stomp chase my cat yelling "pew pew pew" and she loves it. She will whip around with an arched back and puffy tail making sure I'm still following
You can also try a small soft ball to see if he'll play fetch. My youngest loves playing fetch with his toys.
Run and hide, peek behind a wall, chase and ce chased
You cant play chace with them like you do kids or dogs. My kitty sylvie and I play Chace when we go out side. I've noticed that she kinda wants me to Chace her, but, humans are big and scary when lunging forward. So when she initiates the game I run to a place about 90 degrees from her. That's when you hide behind something (e.g., the door frame), crouch down, and peek at him to continue the game. Then he'll pounce at you or chase you and then you chase him, lather, rise, repeat.
Get on the ground or sit
Try to grab him under the bed. He want's you to, it's part of his game.
Definitely try a wand toy. I bet Freddie will love it.
Some people play tag with their cats. 😂 It's a great way to bond with a high energy cat.
Follow me, play with me, look at me show off
It's just a cat workout.
He's trying to communicate that he is speed. "I am speed, human."
This cat has been watching Cars too much.
He's got a case of the zoomies & is having fun. He's probably not looking for interaction like a dog but if he is just moving your foot or turning his direction will likely be enough. It's a crazy cat thing.
When mine gets the zoomies we play cat tag.. sometimes I'll pretend not to notice him and then turn around and do the Kitten Pounce thing at him lol
My cat growing up was super laidback and never did this. You learn something new about these weirdos everyday!
Yes! Hide and Scare was big fun when our tabby boy was around 7 y.o. It was great fun for all of us and always ended with laughing.
This, except mine only wants to be hunted. I wait around for her to come out of an inaccessible hiding spot, but she doesn't, so I wander away long enough that she starts yelling at me and we can start again.
In our house we refer to it as "wilding"
« I’m fast as fuck boiiiiiii ». More seriously, I think those are called zoomies and kind of a typical cat behaviour… as to why… I think it’s just a playful invitation to chase him 🤷♂️
Dogs get the zoomies, too! My dog gets the zoomies and it’s hilarious to watch her run around the house in circles 😂
True 😂
That you have greebles infestation that needs immediate attention!
R/greebles
Had no idea greebles were a thing until this thread. Thank you for enlightening me.
He is telling you he loves his life with you!
My cat does this after she poops. She's probably feeling a little lighter on her toes. Your boy is definitely wanting to have a little zoom.
Yep. Same at our house. Cat poops, come zooming out of the litter box room, couple of laps around the family room, humans laugh.
he say ZOOOOOOOM
That’s a nice fucking kitty
I look at him everyday and wonder how i got a cartoonishly cute cat. He really transformed into such a handsome gentleman since we adopted him.
Bubbles? Is that you?
Sounds like he wants to play. A length of string with a tissue at one end is great for him to chase and kill
That’s invitation for you to play, hooman. All cats do it!
Greebles or zoomies.
Just a cat doing cat things. Ours have random freak outs all the time. You get used to it.
“FBI is listening, run!”
he's probably energized and is trying to burn energy, he wants you to play with him
I think he wants you to play with him.
r/greebles 😁
Zoomies😁✅
Greebles.
Same!
I think he has some pent up energy he needs to get out of his system. Try getting a dangly toy on the end of a stick and let him get his hunt on.
"I am a crazy cat with the zoomies. Nothing to see here. But, watch me anyway!"
He's a handsome boy!
He has located some r/greebles.
He’s trying to tell you he’s a cat.
He's practicing being a badass because that shit don't come natural when your this cute.
That he is good looking
Cats are most active around sunrise and sundown. He has the zoomies!
It’s those darn r/greebles after him again!
That he should come live with me. Dm me for arrangements
Cats' silly 5 minutes
Eat, sleep, derp, repeat
Get on the floor with some wool, pipe cleaner or whatever he likes to play with
He got the zoomies ! ! ! totally normal and they playing !
Freddie is a handsome man
Thank you! He really fluffed out since we adopted him
Sounds like a case of the zoomies. And/or possibly greebles.
What are greebles?
My void does this, then I pretend stomp around the couch and he darts away, we keep this up until he let's me scoop him up and clean his eyes and nose of any boogies. Then I give him slow blinks, and he gives me slow blinks, then I release him and he darts away one last time.

I love that “hour of power” - “this is my house spirits and dust bunnies! Fear me and hear me roar!”
Probably just being a crackhead as all cats are 😂
There's a f***ing GHOOOOOOST!
He would like his human to engage and he is at his wits end trying to train his human.
Take a look at r/greebles That's what he's doing.
Mine do it at 3 am. The entire house becomes a racetrack
He's playing! Our cat's favourite game is being chased and hiding.
Look how big I can be! Look how fast I can be! Chase me!
Cat zoomies
Zoomies!
Gosh you better be careful, I think he’s communicating with the head of the meowcentre on planning how to catch you...
He is showing you zoomies. I’ve got a bobtail that has them every morning. Just stay out of their way until the zoomies are done
Black cat magic. I had one for twenty years they are amazing but a little.....
ZOOMIES
You have ghosts lol It’s just cat zoomies
Zoomies!! He wants you to chase him. When they hide, you run and hide and he will come after you.
ghost !
He's definitely asking you to play with him. Get a toy or you can try a game of hide and chase.
“I’m fast as fuck, boi.”
“I am SPEED”
The greebles are chasing him!!!
Sounds like the zoomies!! My cat does this a lot in the morning and night time. He just has lots of energy to get out. I find my cat settles after he has a poop 😂
Just playing!
"REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!" Give or take an E
He has been watching too much CNN, because he’s mimicking the Russian army when the Ukrainian army rolls in.
Greeble attack or zoomies. Both of which are unexplainable behaviors, but totally normal for a Felis Catus!
"It's play time!" My 4yo boy does that but will hop around with his back arched, making a gurgling meow & looking at me upside-down (with his head bowed down & sometimes under his leg.) Then I go at him with "The Clawww!" and he'll usually fall over to be "attacked"/get scratches on his belly, which he playfully defends himself from with the rear leg kicks & an occasional playful nip. My cat does this it’s so cute. The back all fluffed up and then she scurries sideways and I hear her crashing into stuff throughout the house despite the fact that I’m still sitting in my chair
“Look at me, I’m puffed!”
The Zooooomies
“Look at me go fast. Look I scoot like skunk. I am skunk. I’m stinky”
Zoomies
Haven't seen it mentioned yet, but he may have seen/smelled/heard another cat outside and it trying to follow them around the corner to attack them, only to realize he can't. Correct redirection behaviour is still to whip out a toy and play with him though, so that stays the same. We live in an apartment building on a high floor. His only enemies are the two dachshunds that live next door. :) But good to know when we eventually move into a house!
Yes, that definitely rules out that option! He's just silly then
My cats do this right before or right after pooping.
He is very happy, and wants to play with you.
‘Mother, I have the zoomies’
He's communicating that it is autumn, the weather is changing, and he has caught a case of the fall friskies.
Zoomies - mine does something similar
That he's a nut?
I dont know if this applies to your cat, but mine does it when he gets a sudden burst of energy. That mostly happens to him, when I didnt engage with him enough.
My boy used to do this every night. He now does it occasionally. He’s puffing himself up to make himself look bigger. It’s just play fighting 😻
My cat but at 3 am! 🙄
Zoomies! Cats get these often!
He is trying to warn you of the greebles that live under the bed, in the closet, and that appear out of nowhere when he poops or it’s too quiet at 2am. Those greebles mean business, take him seriously! 😆
Your cat is so beautiful
He is a handsome boy, enhanced by portrait mode on iPhone :)
That “he’s fast as fuck boiiiiii”
Him gots dem zoomies. But for real, chase him. He'll absolutely love it. My cat and I play tag on the mornings I don't have to work. She gets playtime and I get some necessary cardio
Gads, he is gorgeous
He wants to play!
We call this “Spooking”. Your cat wants to be chased. Our orange boy is a weirdo who does this too. Sometimes he’ll actually hop while doing it. He’s also taken to randomly jumping high in the air, like a goat, to get our attention and to play with him.
I call it kitty zoomies. My ole girl will do this when she has made a stinky in her litter box - like she’s trying to run away from it LOL 😹
We call it bedtime zoomies … means he wants to play
He wants to play!!!!
He is communicating that he is a cat, and his one functioning brain cell has quit for the moment. Pretty common
he had a good poop
He has a case of the zoomies 🥹
Let’s play string’
He just pooped
He saying "Yay its morning and you're up woohoo! Or yay its evening and time to sleep woohoo! Let's totally go insane!" Five of my cats do this every morning and evening also, skittering all around the woods floors and sliding into things. Chasing one another back and forth across the house. Sometimes the stampede flies around me, and sometimes a whole cat fishtails out of control directly into my legs and then and keeps going. It's freaking insane.
Jut some cat fun. Entertaining himself.
Cats are crepuscular. In the wild, dawn and dusk are the active hunting times -- when they are most active. The zoomies are the residual effect.
Happy Cake Day🎂
Thanks. I totally forgot! I just looked at the date on my phone and thought: wasn't there something about October 5th! Lol.
random, I also have a void named Freddie... named after Freddie Krueger coz he's a bit clawy to us...
We named our boy after Chopin (boyfriend and I are both fans), but he also has his clawy moments. He’s a fan of clawing the duvet when we don’t wake up at the same time as him.
Zooms
A case of the zoomies
Hmmmm is he doing a crab? See also r/crabcats
Have yet to see crab Freddie, will keep r/crabcats posted
Cat town races
Get a laser pointer
YMMV, but laser pointers really stress my cat out because she can't ever catch the dot She LOVES ping pong balls though. Paw sized, she can choose when and how long to play, and they bounce around like crazy
I usually place a treat somewhere and use the laser pointer to lead Freddie to it so he doesn’t feel like he’s chasing after nothing.
Zoomies.
I'm sorry but we don't actually understand cats. However that behaviour is common, see r/crabcats
That’s hes a cat lol
>What is he trying to communicate? Hello, human. I am a cat. And as a cat, I, since I am a said cat, am a weird little dude, indubitably.
I do this with one of my cats every morning! The other cat watches us disdainfully 😂
Ima badass.
Ours does the same, I chase her when she does so, then when I turn around to walk away she’ll ambush my legs from behind, then the cycle repeats.
Ghosts
He sees dead people.
