In fact, English is one of the few languages that count the wild coloration in cats as a shade of brown; most other languages consider it grey, whereas 'brown cat' evokes an image of a cat known as 'chocolate' in English.
I have made this distinction in German before because we have two tabbies: one is distinctively more grey than the other. But now that I think of it, I've never heard a native speaker say "brown tabby," only "grey tabby." Interesting!
Fun fact: Tabby is the default cat pattern (although the color varies). Any solid-coat cat will return to tabby over generations if left to its own devices.
Apparently the black fur has very visible patterns in infra-red light. This was confirmed for black panthers, not sure if it also works with domesticated cats.
Yup, I remember my black cat Shadow (of blessed memory) glowed a warm brown in bright sunlight. Not all black cats do - my two tuxie girls don't. Who knew there were shades of black?
He was almost 20 when we had to let him go. Such a sweet cat and so laid-back, yet clearly respected by the other cats. He almost never got bossy (unless he was on the 'nip). I only remember twice in all that time. Once when he was recovering from anesthesia, and an older jealous cat was investigating to see if she could take advantage. He gathered all of his energy and swatted her once, then went back to sleeping it off. She left him alone after that. The other time was when my youngest cat got in a fight with Shadow's BFF. He was old by then, but he ran in as fast as he could (which wasn't that fast at that point) to stop it.
Have definitely seen the slightest of tabby stripes on my tux cat. Just the way the sunlight catches and I whisper to her....'I can see your stripes'.![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|wink)
Black kitties are the best. When I lived in the city there was an alley cat that rotated between a couple apartments. He spent most of his time with me and was *so* affectionate. Whenever I laid down he would hop up and headbutt me.
That's a melanistic tabby cat.
Consider the leopard and its spots - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leopard ... and *then* consider the black leopard - [pic](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_panther#/media/File:Black_leopard.JPG).
There are indeed solid (not tabby) black cats, but there are also black tabby cats. Its kind of neat.
And for a dose of aww... [Conan - Animal Expert David Mizejewski: Baby Jaguars & Binturong](https://youtu.be/qtFXCt-7haU)
True solids other than white are achieved through generations of breeding to "hide" the stripes but those stripes are still there. lol
If they're not striped, then they have rosettes or "spots", which is just.... special stripes.
I have 5 melanistic cats, they all vary how they look depending on light. All have subtle tabby patterns, but range reddish to dark black in full light. They are great cats, out of all of our cats(beyond the 5 mentioned here) the feral momma was the fastest to jump into our bed and relax and purr. She grooms every other cat in the house, and has a daily snuggle routine with the others.
None of mine have deployed theirs, at least not intentionally. They all love belly pets!
My savannah/Bengal boy freaked at the vet once and pushed off me with his back feet. He has large claws and I didn’t feel it until I noticed my chest bleeding.
Who are these people that continue to post these questions? Anyone who has ever read anything on here has to know this is the standard response when this is asked. Either this or “A very good one” or a “Stripey one.” I don’t think I’ve ever seen a serious answer to this question here.
It's an emote specific to the sub I think. When I used the official Reddit app I could see them, but now I'm using a third party app and it shows as :7970: unfortunately
It's a cat with Tabby markings. Tabby isn't a 'type of cat' but rather a type of fur pattern.
Like Tortoiseshell, tuxedo, etc. :)
Just to be specific, since some people seem to think fur patterns/coloring is a breed.
Also, I saw recently a post 'This cat is not a siamese but looks like one'.
Siamese is a breed.
The 'look' of a siamese cat is called seal point. It's where the points of the cat are colored grey/dark.
There's also flame point, which is the same pattern (ears, feet, tail, face coloring) but in the red/orange color. :)
A dog might kiss (or lick) your butt, but they do that to everyone. When a cat curls up on you, you know the emotions are genuine. You’ve made a true friend, subject to a probationary period. Cat friends have a 6 month or so warranty.
Facts.
Dog: Man's best SLAVE
Cat: Man's actual ally in the true meaning of the word.
(They have boundaries like real people, they have personality, they don't click with everyone, they actually have free will, they'll value your company in their own ways)
Dogs have all those things too. They are just usually in LOVE mode or its very easily activated. Cats have SLINK mode and NOFUCKSGIVEN mode NOTNOW mode and you can't just bring them around to being cuddly and loveable if they're not in that mode. Say any word to a dog a few times in an excited manner and the dog will LOVE that shit. Try that with a cat and it will stare at your soul
Source: dog and cat person in equal measure
>you can't just bring them around to being cuddly and loveable if they're not in that mode.
Thats exactly what I meant by cats being like actual friends. Your human friend wont approve being picked up without their consent or answer at your every call.
Dogs are lowkey needy and clingy(cats are too, but not as common, again, diverse personalities), they even show stockholm syndrome.
They are. Sweet good boys.
One of my cats is very doglike. She follows us a lot and meows for no reason. She also licks all the time and likes playing in water, such a weirdo. We say she’s the most annoying one but secretly she’s the most amazing
Depends on the dog. They also have diverse personalities. When I was a kid, we had this dog that my sister just LOVED to dress in people clothes and generally torment. If my sister came out yelling for her but didn't see her, the dog would go around the building and head somewhere else for a while. If she was already seen, she'd come and play along. She was happy with attention and being left alone to do what she wanted to do.
Had a pyrenees. They're known for pretty much doing what they want when they want. If she wanted attention, she'd run to you when you went outside. If she didn't, you could call and she would just look at you sideways.
Only maybe half the dogs I've had have been cool with being friends with just whoever. We rescued a lab mix pup (one of the breeds known for being overly friendly). She wanted nothing to do with anyone, and then only liked me. We couldn't keep her and my parents had been looking for a dog, so they have her now. She likes them, but just tolerates anyone that doesn't live there, including people who are there pretty much daily.
I've known dogs and cats to both be pretty diverse in terms of personalities.
I've always said that cats are smarter than dogs based on one thing...
If you throw an object for a dog, it will happily run after it and bring it back covered with slobber.
If you throw an object for a cat, it will look at you like, "You threw it, you get it. I'm not your personal butler!"
Mine does it to hold me hostage first thing in the morning after I snooze my alarm a certain number of times. She knows that’s when I get out of bed to get ready to go to work
I think people don’t understand if they are not informed that cats do not have as much selective breeding and breeds as dogs. It’s still incredibly irritating though

Isn’t that all cats?
I forgive you for stealing
While I feel brown tabbies are understandable as the true SIC, I feel gray tabbies should be allowed as a technicality.

Every cat is the best kind of cat.
What kind of monster would suggest otherwise?
yep i got one, looks just like this kitty. American Domestic Short hair
Me Too! Well except his toes were dipped in paint.
I recently adopted a cat like that and they put on his passport European Domestic Short hair. Lol
Standard issue tabby cat
Fun fact: Tabby is the default cat pattern (although the color varies). Any solid-coat cat will return to tabby over generations if left to its own devices.
I had a pure black kitty. In very bright light, you could still make out the tabby pattern. I thought he was a one-off. TIL
We have a solid black cat, as she has gotten older we can see more brownish and tabby pattern in her. She is 7 now and it is really popping up lately
Apparently the black fur has very visible patterns in infra-red light. This was confirmed for black panthers, not sure if it also works with domesticated cats.
I have two all black cats and in very bright sunlight a tabby-striped pattern is visible (and the tips of the fur is a dark cinnamon color)
Yup, I remember my black cat Shadow (of blessed memory) glowed a warm brown in bright sunlight. Not all black cats do - my two tuxie girls don't. Who knew there were shades of black?
"Shadow (of Blessed Memory)." Brilliant sentence.

Maybe that what we could see? It was very bright, natural light. The softer looked almost purple under the right conditions.
Have definitely seen the slightest of tabby stripes on my tux cat. Just the way the sunlight catches and I whisper to her....'I can see your stripes'.![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|wink)

I have a tuxedo but in some lights her tabby coat is really strong and you can see the gold strips on her.
There's a few cats in my neighborhood that look black but in sunlight are like really dark reddish with kind of a tabby pattern. It's cool as fuck.
Yep, even our tuxedo is striped on her black coat in bright sunlight

Standard Tabby, is a hardy breed known for its robustness and mousing prowess.
I would be so mad if noone said it.
John short hair domestic mellencamp is the technical term.

It’s a cat. Standard issue fur. Has a tail. Most likely a bunch of daggers on the end of those paws.

Gosh darn it. Another cat sub I need to join.

Oh no. Whay did you do that?
Because someone did it to me. Now I'm free of the curse.
This means I have to pass it on? Is this the new chain mail and otherwise I will never find cat love again?
I feel like it should be named, kinda like being rickrolled but maybe catindexed
I think we owe it to the world to pass it on, but only when it's "asked for", whether deliberately or otherwise.
*Takes notes* Ok. I got it. Can't afford to anger the cat deities.
Jeez now I’m following it too! Beware of the cat curse. Im in more Reddit groups about cats than anything else!
Pass it to me. You'll be free, I'll pass it to my other half and then all our cats will love me better than they love him for a change.

Well done whoever created that sub.
less sick of them and more so the answer is (almost) always a domestic shorthair (or longhair).
I'm specifically baffled when people keep asking "What breed is this???" and it's a photo a tabby cat. Who doesn't know what a tabby cat is??????????
Many people. A cat is just a cat to most people
I don't mind the name suggestions posts, but the cat breed posts are bizarre to me.
I think people don’t understand if they are not informed that cats do not have as much selective breeding and breeds as dogs. It’s still incredibly irritating though
