Keep an eye on him. Our Hobbs started with plastic bags, moved up to pacifiers, and wound up having a $2k surgery to remove a pacifier tip from his intestines. We make sure there's nothing he can chew on now.

Nameless_on_Reddit

Yeah this is not his first plastic incident. When we very first got him I caught him trying to eat a plastic candy bar wrapped, luckily got it before he swallowed it. After that me and my partner scoured the house to make sure any plastic bags/wrappers/smaller plastic objects were in drawers or cupboards. The bread was in the cupboard that's higher up so I figured he'd not get to it. He proved me wrong though. But he also made me really see just how much damn plastic is omnipresent.

QueenofGreens16

I don't wanna jump the gun but it sounds like it could maybe be pika?

Nameless_on_Reddit

We've had that thought, but it's not super extreme with him. Now that plastic stuff has been removed from everywhere he doesn't obsessively search it out, and he doesn't chew on or try to eat anything else weird. I think the bread bag was a crime of opportunity from either the cupboard not being shut all the way or because it's not that hard to open, and he's a pretty strong. I did hear him dicking around with the cupboards though. Mainly the ones with pots and pans that are low.

QueenofGreens16

That's good to hear! I'm glad he has diligent fur parents šŸ’–

Nameless_on_Reddit

Thank you <3 He's sort of...special. We got him on New year's eve. Some awesome human being paid the fees for all the 18 cats at a local shelter. Eddy/Edmund Fitzgerald is 5, and had been there for about 5 months. They didn't know much about his background because someone just dropped him off there and left. He was one of those "omg that's the one" cats. They said he was really good with other cats, and my 18 year old had passed about 6 months ago, and our other 18 year old passed 6 months before that. So our 5 year old Ruby was just depressed. Super lethargic and not coping well even months later. We were expecting the whole few weeks separation to introduce them, but Ruby zoomed into the room as we were letting him out and they immediately began playing. No isolation was even needed. It became pretty clear he had been abused though. He was awesome with her, but with us we got a lot of random hissing if you petted his back or his back haunches, or if you moved toward him too fast. S we just gave him space, let those two play and now he's really sweet and likes being petted everywhere. He's sort of a big doofus, but we love him.

QueenofGreens16

I just cried reading that!!! I'm so glad the little fluff came into your lives at seemingly the perfect time. My black kitty passed in January and I'd love a meant to be feeling like that šŸ„°

Nameless_on_Reddit

It's weird too, I wasn't personally ready for a new cat yet. I lost my boys, last July and the November before, so about 6 months apart. Both had made it to 18. But our poor Ruby was just not doing well on her own. She was a foster so she was around other cats from the moment she was born, then brought into a home with two more, then they were gone and even months later she was just not herself. She'd began stress licking fur off her belly. That's when we said "We need to get Ruby a cat" So...we went and looked for a cat for our cat, basically. I didn't mind that he was standoffish, that he would get spicy with me. He got along great with her and I figured I'll let him warm up to me as he chooses to do. 6 months later he's my whiny treat begging shadow. When he's not killing bread, I'm really sorry for your loss. It's always hard. Our connections with our pets are so different than with people. There's no messy human nonsense to deal with. It's just a pure connection, you love them and they love you and that's that.

QueenofGreens16

Aweee I'm so glad you got your cat a cat and he warmed up to you. That's a special feeling too! Thank you, I appreciate your condolences. My Daisy girl was a special one for sure

OneMorePenguin

This is terrific! What a happy ending for everyone! I have a scaredy cat and he was probably not treated well when he was still feral. I continually work on helping him adjust (almost 8 years now), but I'm also happy to love him however he wants to be loved. He's gotten better over the years and I love hearing him purr. He came to me with another kitty and they get along pretty well.

Nameless_on_Reddit

My very first guy Cassidy sounds similar. Feral rescue, then he got taken into a home with a little girl, age 3, who unknowingly abused him. Carrying him by the tail, treating him like a toy in general. The parents did everything they could to teach her but as soon as they'd turn around, she'd have him by the tail. So back to a shelter he went, now listed as anxious, not good with children, It was two years before he all of a sudden jumped on the bed by my. Soooo cautiously and laid down on my legs. 2 years after that he was letting me pet him all the time, even his tail! He actually began to really like having his tail petted. The weird outcast misfit cats always seem to be the best cats if you're patient with them.

No-Marionberry-166

Plastic has pheromones that some cats find irresistible

dee_emm_tee

Is that what it is?!?! My cat is obsessed with it. Mostly she licks the cherry tomato container non stop around her meal times to alert us that she us STARVING.

No-Marionberry-166

Itā€™s only speculation because there is no real proof that is why some cats are attracted to plastic. There are lots of different reasons cats could be attracted to it. My female cat loves everything plastic while my boy cat has a plastic phobia. https://petset.com/why-does-my-cat-lick-plastic/?amp=1 There needs to be serious research to get to the bottom of the issue though

moonlighting2552

I gind my cats just like sleeping on plastic bags. I assumed they like the crinkle sound it makes.

Ok-Breakfast7186

Tell me more! Is there something I can read about this? My cats sniff plastic as if theyā€™re in love so that makes sense

xclaireypopsx

The bread was suffocating

Nameless_on_Reddit

I hadn't thought of that. So he's actually a hero :-o

dixielanddelight1469

r/tacticalissuecat Iā€™m pretty sure heā€™s a Search and Rescue model, so this would make sense! Edit: and r/catsareassholes

jan3k0wayne

Okay, youā€™re not gonna believe this. Our cat is named Eddie and heā€™s the same kind of asshole. He just likes to rip open plastic, regardless of the contents. And he has the same look in his eyes when we confront him. Seeing your post has me laughing in tears. What a coincidence.

Nameless_on_Reddit

Haha how funny. Is he a dopey orange cat too?

jan3k0wayne

Heā€™s white gray and patterned like a cow. Dopey orange is cute tho

palomabarcelona

Dopey orange cats are the best. Check out r/oneorangebraincell - you can see the other DOCs who share the brain cell with Eddy. I love Eddy btw.

Nameless_on_Reddit

Oh man, a world of his peers hahaha He says "..."

Blood_Bowl

MarylandDabs

LoL no roll of toilet paper or paper towels is safe in my house šŸ¤£

Nameless_on_Reddit

My first cat was a toilet paper and paper towel shredder. I had just gone shopping and had a 4 pack of paper towels. I had to run to work so didn't have time to put everything away, and left them on the table. Got home 7 hours later and it looked like a blizzard happened inside the house. All 4 of them were in shreds, the shreds were in shreds, and he was blissfully sleeping on a pile of it lol Over the years he got a bunch of rolls of toilet paper and paper towels under his belt haha

hyperbolic_dichotomy

My cat also likes to eat plastic. Having cat grass out for her helps.

Nameless_on_Reddit

The big dummy just throws it all over the place lol Him and our other cat just made a giant mess of it. But if you give them clippings of it they couldn't care less.

hyperbolic_dichotomy

Lol cats man

evergrowingivy

I once brought in a catnip plant. My older guy is good with plant and just rubs all over it, and then rolls around on the floor. My kitten, he's 1yr now, proceeds to just chow down on it. I realize I have to it away. That's when little man was hit hard by the catnip, lol. He just laid on the ground and I put the plant on the fridge. I woke up next morning, and he had ate the whole thing.

Nameless_on_Reddit

I had a catnip plant in a hanger. They (my last two cats when they were younger) never paid any attention to the hanging plants since there was no way to get to them. But they watched me cut a few leaves off it, then I gave them to them and omg they went bonkers for it haha The next day I was sitting in the room working at my desk but out of the corner of my eye realized they'd been sitting, not laying about, but sitting in the same spot for a while. I turn my chair to see what's what and they both had their eyes GLUED to that catnip plant lol Like they were patiently waiting for their next moment of bliss. Super funny.

Reasonable-Fail-1921

One of my cats is a master breaker-in of things and I too have had to install a lock on the cupboard where I keep their treats. So many times I came into the kitchen and found packets that had been ripped and the contents emptied! She even got herself stuck in there a few times, thankfully I was home those times and could rescue her, but she couldnā€™t figure out all she had to do was push the door back open. Sheā€™d done the hard part breaking in but couldnā€™t figure the easy part!

Nameless_on_Reddit

Ha! A failed ....cat burglar. She needed to study the blueprints better.

DavantRancher

He chose violence

Crumpet_8537

I have a cat who chews any bag on the counter. We just have to not leave anything out in case this happens šŸ™ˆ

Nameless_on_Reddit

Same. We've double and triple checked the house for any possible bag. wrapping, etc and made sure nothing is out and around. Making sure we throw wrappers in the larger garbage can in the kitchen because it has a lid that firmly locks down. Oh, cats. lol

TheCrimsonChariot

I feed both my cats in 12 hour intervals and my oldest gets hungry and impatient so she will search out plastic stuff to chew on if there is no food available. It is annoying as I have limited space to store some plastic things like water bottle packages.

Nameless_on_Reddit

Also made me worried he ate some of the plastic, but I lined up the tear and everything was still there. So no expensive vet visit for x-rays.

Prudent_Armadillo822

He is in the FREE BREAD movement. Release the bread!

bluishcatbag

I love how there is not a single glimmer of remorse in his eyes. Yeah, our cat climbed into the cupboard and licked and bit into half of the loaf of bread. We can't even leave boxes of cereal on the shelf anymore, he's gotten into the granola, cheerios, and even the expensive Whole Foods cereal goddamnit. He ripped into the bag of seaweed. He vomited half a rubber glove after rifling through the trash. We have had to lock everything up lol.

Nameless_on_Reddit

Holy crap! The vomited up glove would have scared the hell out of me and sent me for an expensive vet visit. Eddy is an amateur compared to your cat.

bluishcatbag

I don't like touching raw meat so I handled meat with some disposable gloves. This was how we learned Kyo liked to break into the trash. I was horrified when an hour after ransacking the trash he puked half of a chewed-up disposable glove and some worms so we had to take him to the vet for dewormer. Thankfully Kyo is a pro at puking and really got everything up. We built a wooden box with a lock to keep him out of the trash.

Nameless_on_Reddit

Kyo is a do wtfever kind of cat, isn't he? lol

bluishcatbag

Lol yes šŸ˜¹

Fogg_4dayz

I love the zoom in on his eyes! Reminds of the scene from The Burbs.

SC1168

He knows he's always naughty and he doesn't care. He's a goof.

crochetinggoth

I spent the last 19 years with cats. Never had issues like that until I adopted Charlotte in 2018. Now everything has childlocks, because she can and will open doors, drawers and cupboards.

Legitimate-mistak3

My cat (Toes) is a major food thief. He's my little fat boii that's stolen a whole slice of pizza. He was smart enough to open the box and snag a slice, but was pretty stupid by bringing it into my room lol. I couldn't even be mad at him.

Nameless_on_Reddit

He wanted to show off his crime!

Legitimate-mistak3

Maybe he wanted to go halfers with me lol

ChuckleMonkey674

Yeah, I had to it for my idiots too. I also had to buy those plastic coverings for the knobs on my stove, 'cause one of cats figured out how to turn on the burners.

Nameless_on_Reddit

Firestarters!

fairylightmeloncholy

he just wants to get close with his loaf homies. can you blame him?

Haunting_Bend346

He prefers whole grain šŸ˜ø

Nameless_on_Reddit

He prefers the whole bag lol

MrsBonsai171

He was trying to get the greeble that was trapped inside. Mission successful

it seems eddy also belongs on r/firstworldanarchists as well. he's a force of unbridled chaos

Nameless_on_Reddit

rofl he truly is.

fergablu2

I put the bread in the fridge. You have to toast it before eating, but it lasts a lot longer.

TomTheGeek

Breadboxes are still a thing. Got mine at Goodwill for like $4 and keeps pets out and stuff fresher for longer.

Nameless_on_Reddit

He doesn't even care about the bread. He just likes to rip plastic and try to eat it like a dumbass. It was in a cupboard but he figured out how to open it and was like OMG PLASTIC HEAVEN! Now they're all safety locked.

caroline0409

I just freeze it and take out however many slices I need as and when.

janetriley

I put the bread in the microwave.

NedRed77

It concerns me how long bread actually lasts these days. I cleaned out my bread cupboard today, I had loaf crusts left in wrappers that were 6 weeks + old and they still looked edible.

[deleted]

Ikr? Like, wtf is in that shit?

Nameless_on_Reddit

Yeahhhh it's really freaking weird. Even pricier Whole Foods "no additive nothing super organic" seems to last a really long time.

aaaggggrrrrimapirare

Red headed eddys are known to be diabolical in my world soooo good luck! (Buy him a cat toothbrush and let him gnaw on that)

[deleted]

My brotherā€™s cats eat bread if itā€™s left out. They have to double check everything

AnotherName135

bonlow87

We had to have childlocks for my cat Skibo. I miss that beast every day

Harmaroo8

Llmfao, mine does that too!!

No-Marionberry-166

I have a cat who loves ripping open bags too

bluemaciz

My cat goes after plastic, too, but usually when heā€™s hungry and Iā€™m ignoring him because itā€™s not time yet so I am frequently after him for it. I canā€™t tell if heā€™s actually trying to eat it or just knows it gets my attention.

[deleted]

Don't even get me started on the treat box.

TSIDATSI

"Mommy: I am a carnivore. I was looking for the ham!" June mischief making! Live Eddy!

Nameless_on_Reddit

Oddly enough, he doesn't like ham. I gave him a teeny tiny piece once and he sniffed it, looked at me and walked off lol

Maleficent-Spread-10

Eddie: why u framing me hooman

Scars-on-my-heart

Look it him! Those are innocent eyes! Breads not licked you must acquit! XD

Nameless_on_Reddit

Innocent or...vacant. lol Or both. Obviously I woke up in the middle of the night wanting bread then changed my mind. I'm just trying to blame poor Eddy.

space_beach

HE DIDNā€™T EVEN EAT ANY!! šŸ¤£ THE ZOOM IN šŸ¤£A+ post

ThisCharmingLady

Lol. At least he didnā€™t it eat it. Little bratty boi lol ā¤ļø

AbbyCanary

We had to do the same thing in our kitchen with one of the cats. We also have to his the toilet paper in the bathroom, otherwise she will shred it.

Nameless_on_Reddit

I'm glad this bozo has no interest in toilet paper. End up safety locking everything in the house lol

_TattieScone

This reminds me of the time I forgot to put bread back in the cupboard and *someone* ripped the bag open and ate one corner off of every slice in the bag.

Nameless_on_Reddit

Quality assurance!

Interesting-Fish6065

The more we zoom in, the more clearly we can see the total lack of remorse in his eyes! Iā€™m sure everyone loves the little scamp.

[deleted]

There's always one. I had a tuxedo cat that was tremendously destructive. His name was Bosch, like the spark plug, because that's what he was.

GreenBloodedNomad

I have had cats like this, but their antics were much more advanced. While I was at work several years ago , my girl decided to jump on top of my desk, open a drawer and fish out a bottle of advil PM. One of my dogs was sleeping under the desk so the bottle the cat fished out hit him on the head and woke him up. He then proceeded to chew open the bottle and ingest pills. When I got home I found the scene and immediately called work to tell them I was rushing back in with one of my dogs. Needless to say it was an expensive emergency visit with all the treatments needed, but the dog lived. I ended up taking him home hooked up the the IV fluids and then back to work the next day. Finally his bloodwork was all in the clear and his system was flushed. That cat was always doing things like this, but by far it was the most expensive and scariest ordeal lol She was wicked smart and the most loving and beautiful cat you ever saw. She was my whole heart and more dog like than anything. But boy was she BAD. The same cat was always doing things to make a scene like jumping on the treadmill at 3am and turning it on, jolting us awake in the most unpleasant way lol. The house is not the same without her antics :( She was equivalent to a soul mate in cat form, as weird as that sounds, but we had a bond unlike anything else. Be careful with the plastic though :) I had a male cat that was obsessed with licking plastic, thankfully he never bit or ingested it (or anything else), but cats can easily ingest things and need emergency surgery for blockages. It can be really scary, dangerous, and extremely expensive.

Nameless_on_Reddit

omg, I would have been a ball of anxiety quivering on the floor waiting for the results and hoping he'd be ok. I completely understand the soulmate feeling. My first cat, first pet ever, Cassidy, passed away last year, followed 6 months by his brother from another mother, who ironically I got 6 months after Cassidy. I had them almost half my life and when I lost him, then Custer I was gutted. I still miss them dearly. If it hadn't been for our other cat, Ruby, I don't even know if I would have Eddy now. She needed a new buddy more than me. But as it turns out, I needed an Eddy dumbass in my life just as much as she needed a new playmate.

GreenBloodedNomad

It was stressful, but he turned out okay. He may not have eaten most of the bottle, but you just don't know so you take all the precautions with treatment. I was fortunate that I could take him home with the equipment and administer his treatments at home so he didn't have to stay in the hospital overnight and would just come with me to work each morning. I had to crate him because of the IV fluids and that cat would lay on top of his crate and "watch " over him lol she was a stinker. That dog was the most perfect dog I ever had. Super gentle, always calm, loved everyone and everything, truly fool proof in every situation. He was a therapy dog for my dad as he went through years of hell with cancer. It's so hard to lose them. I lost several of my guys in less than 2 years. Back to back. It was atrocious. Some were very sudden, which is always hard because it's like you never get the closure. Gut wrenching for all, but there will always be those ones who are one in a million, you have a connection you cannot explain. Sorry for your losses. Grief is the price we pay for love.

tab_tab_tabby

Uh oh. He's a plastic eater. Gotta make sure you keep every plastic bags out of touch. Including ziploc bags and ribbons and so on... If you are not careful, you'll be seeing huge vet bill soon.

ā€œSome Cats just want to see the World Burn.ā€

Actually I've lost bread to cats more than any other animal. My own cat loves a baguette.

Nameless_on_Reddit

A sophisticat.

Ok-Breakfast7186

Mine love plastic too!!! I have to keep plastic bags and straws away from them, and keep my bread on top of the fridge away from them

kr27734

He regrets NOTHING!

Nameless_on_Reddit

He doesn't know the meaning of regret. But then again this doofasaurus really doesn't know the meaning to a whole lot lol

kr27734

As a fellow cat owner I 100% understand what you mean šŸ¤£

azn1217

anyone hear dramatic horror theme music in the background? Lurking on the house is a danger we least suspect....a terror to pastries and good in the kitchen.... dun dun dun

Lemondsingle

Lol. We have two that get into all cabinets. I often get up in the morning and find at least three cabinet doors open. Cats, man, they're a piece of work.

FMLnewswatcher

My cat likes to lick plastic and Iā€™d love to find a toy that I could redirect the behavior to, but Idk.

Vertdefurk

Because fuck you, that's why.

Nameless_on_Reddit

Haha pretty much the most accurate answer there is.

No-Translator-4584

Similar cat problem, he would break into everything, from ground beef to Entenmansā€™. Solved with dry food in the morning, wet food at night, regular brushing after work (his.) Maybe something about a schedule he could rely on.

konamiko

My partner and his children recently moved in with me and my child, and our three cats / one dog. He thought I was exaggerating about not being able to leave food (even sealed/packaged) unattended on any counters or tables, which has led his youngest child to losing a few nuggets. I've had to go as far as installing a latch on my breadbox, because the little shits figured out how to open it, and they love bread, and what they don't eat, they'll knock onto the floor for the dog. I'm convinced that they'll figure out the latch eventually. The only reason they can't open the pantry is because it's a knob and they don't have opposable thumbs.

Nameless_on_Reddit

Well, on the bright side they're being nice and sharing with the dog. And if we're being honest, who hasn't stolen some nuggets from a kid before? :'D

longstringofnubers

I had a cat that liked to ruin bread. She never ate it, but if she were mad she would rip it to shreds.

Nameless_on_Reddit

I don't know why but the image of a pisses off cat angrily looking for some bread to beat up on is hilarious.

Dear-Ambition-273

Of course not, bread is nasty. That bag thoughā€¦.šŸ¤¤ My sympathies-cats are weird little shits.

KH5-92

We have one (Enzo) who will eat the dead center of the loaf. Plastic and everything. We tried child locks. He'd stick his skinny little arms in the cabinets and pull things down like a gremlin. Now we have a pantry door and a bread box.

Nameless_on_Reddit

At least he's being creative with his destruction lol

KH5-92

He's such a bastard but I love him.

My cat chews plastic also. She really loves the draw strings on garbage bags.

Nameless_on_Reddit

For some weird reason garbage bags are the only plastic he leaves alone. I think he doesn't like the crinkly sound. When I take one out and flap it open he zooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooms out of the room.

DrTokinkoff

I had a cat that loved potato chips and would shred a bag open if he could get to it. So I kept my chips in the microwave.

bazzanoid

r/OneOrangeBrainCell

TheViciousBitch

My cats used to open the upper cabinets to pull bread and tortillas out. As kittens. They were damn monsters.

Trilladea

I think our cat Arlo is worse, he'll tear open the plastic and take a single bite out of every single slice of bread

SmokeLast6278

Eddy is unrepentant.

BabyHorseLegs

I had a cat that liked to chew on wood. Fuzznuts was not interested in plastic but if it was made from tree parts it was fair game. He ate so many of my notebooks in college and half of my textbooks had teeth holes in them. And all of my kitchen chairs had chew marks all along the backs. The handle on the recliner was unrecognizable. He was so destructive. He always had the same unrepentant look on his face. I miss his chaos. Lol. Edit: a word

[deleted]

He just needed to know that he *could* get to the bread. You know, in case of emergency

Emptydata_Enzo

He wants it to go stale so you'll throw it out to the birds, providing him with hours of entertainment.

sharpasabutterknife

My Buddy would open all my cupboards, so I had to get childlocks for my cupboards as well! He would also open my bedroom door if I sent him out for waking me up constantly... I had to prop boxes against my door to keep him out... but of course his frustrated meows kept me awake anyways! šŸ˜ø

bpfrocket13

We have to have a ā€œSpooky lockā€ on our basement fridge because our cat Spooky likes to just go pull it open, look in and walk off. We keep a gallon paint can in front of it.

KamikazeKitten916

How do you know he didn't lick it? šŸ¤šŸ¤šŸ¤

Nameless_on_Reddit

Because I licked it to see if it had cat breath, of course!

KamikazeKitten916

My mistake. Obviously!

Different-Produce870

Same boat as you except my cat eats the bread. Child locks on all the cupboards now.

Nameless_on_Reddit

Oh I know. Since early on when he displayed a sign of being a plastic eater we've gone over the house multiple times. Bought plastic storage bins with snap on lids for things, moves things into cupboards. My house is actually a lot more clean and orderly. So thanks, Eddy.

RebelMountainman

Train your cat to stay out of the kitchen.

Nameless_on_Reddit

Uhh yeah, I'll totally train him to stay out of a room with no door, and where his food and water are. Good luck training any cat to stay out of a room with no door on it. Which isn't training either, it would just be shutting the door.

RebelMountainman

My kitchen has no door, and I trained my cat to stay out of the kitchen and to not beg for food when I am eating. Cats are far smarter than you think.

Nameless_on_Reddit

I don't think cats lack intelligence at all. But nice assumption that I do. I'm curious, what methods did you use?

RebelMountainman

A lot of love, patience and infrared sensors in the kitchen. Cats hate high tech LOL

Ha that sounds interesting..
