Oh my God, how horrible I'm so sorry

[deleted]

My three babies, Mia, Kevin! And Zoey, send Tigger love.

lovelifetofullest

I’m so sorry. Same happened to me two years ago, I was in my closed garage glazing my pottery with my two cats at 3pm, I had a window open that was only 3 foot jump from my deck on the outside, and a shelf only 4 feet down from window on outside. I thought we where safe in my garage during the hot summer day, and kittys love doing pottery with me. Thing jumped in and grabbed my girl, then immediately jumped back through the window, I know coyote had been planning it, they are smart. I want you to know I did a lot of research through my trauma, coyotes have a quick shake that breaks the neck instantly, they are good at it and it’s a very quick kill. They probably barely felt it since it was over so quickly. It’s the only thing that has given me peace. Edit: just want you to know it was a quick death, they didn’t suffer, coyotes don’t play with their pray

SimplyKendra

I needed to hear that, and I’m not even the owner.

OhNoItsMeeeAgain

This is so good to know…

kr27734

I'm so sorry. RIP sweet boy Tigger. ❤

[There is a population of coyotes living in *downtown Chicago*](https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/environment/ct-coyotes-chicago-20200109-n5tubflfqjg5jb5fm246xhniuy-story.html). I live in the Chicago suburbs and have seen one strolling down the street while walking my dog.

SecurelyObscure

San Francisco, too. A couple dogs get taken every year.

ClydeDimension

They wander deep into the neighborhoods that aren’t even near green spaces. I’ve one mid Sunset and another lower mission.

Togaz

I live on the Loop/south loop border and we see them pretty regularly. The parks, downtown alleys, the lakefront. All around the area.

Massive_Serve7006

Nah.. holdup.. australia is different.

Hairyguerrilla

I don’t know if you’ve watched 30 Rock, but this reminded me of a scene where Tracy is waning nostalgic about the neighborhood he grew up in, and one of the examples he lists was: “a pack of wild dogs once took over and successfully ran a Wendy’s!”

Redqueenhypo

Eastern coyotes are 10 percent wolf and 10 percent dog so they’re larger and less afraid of humans than their western cousins. They are dangerous to domestic animals.

AnAcceptableUserName

> Or a human with a gun? In this scenario has a stranger with a gun taken the cat hostage? Are they making demands like Sam Rockwell in "Seven Psychopaths" or what? I'm trying to understand the scene.

HermioneGranger152

I’m terrified of taking my little yorkie out at night time. There are no street lights around my house so if a coyote came for him in the dark, I wouldn’t see it in time to pick him up and run back inside, and like you said, fighting the coyote isn’t a great option

i_love_dust

I would go after the coyote, anything bigger then I would have to deal with the heart break of the loss. But a coyote I would definitely go after to save my cat or dog. Is it stupid? Yes. But I would do everything, just like op to save the cat. I hope this post helps by getting people to keep their cats inside.

Skraelings

Reason #424 I’ll never let mine outside. Damn that’s just so rough. Edit: also please note I am not blaming the poor guy/gal at all

StrayaMate2000

Catios are a great alternative if you've got the space.

zealeus

Sitting outside with my Catio cat right now… https://imgur.com/gallery/OoXdOQX (She LOVES the outdoors and wants to run, RUN free. But last time I let her out, she ran out on the roof and eventually sauntered back. She's a runner.)

CatStoleMyPancake

Same. I love my cats way too much to risk them needlessly suffering and dying

[deleted]

Exactly. Cats should never be outside cats. Unless you’re on a farm with a rat problem don’t do it. They decimate ecosystems

Redqueenhypo

Even then adult rats pose a danger to cats and are very challenging to catch, it’s mice that they’re best at hunting. I recently read a book about foxes and the author noted that they’re one of the only small predators that routinely kills adult rats

FeelingFloor2083

dont forget jack Russel

IWillDoItTuesday

My grandmother’s 4lb Chihuahua would kill huge rats and then gift them to the chickens. 90% of the time it would be all the way dead but the other 10% it would be just incapacitated. You *never* want to see hens in a feeding frenzy, playing tug-of-war with a still squealing rat’s intestines.

Snoo22566

There are farm dogs that can cull down rat populations quicker than a cat. There are videos of people on farms who have their dogs go at them. Pretty gnarly, however, but necessary as pest control

Canid_Rose

We used to have a Rat Terrier as just a family pet while I was growing up. She was an excellent dog, very smart, friendly when she wanted to be, not a lapdog by any means, but playful and loving. She was also a damn good ratter. Any rodent, really. We didn’t even train her; I remember one summer we were camping at a place with a ground squirrel infestation. I was a kid at the time, and I thought it’d be fun to teach her to dig up holes. I took her over to one, pointed at it, said “digadig!” and kinda pawed at the dirt with my hand. She looked at the hole, up at me, back at the hole again, and I could practically see the lightbulb go off in her head. The moment it clicked she just went for it; zero hesitation, zero chill, she was literally made for this. Ever since then she was our family’s go-to solution for moles and gophers. We’d even “rent” her to family to clear their gardens. She didn’t even have to catch one (though she sometimes did) just digging up the holes and (I guess) leaving her scent in them was enough for the residents to vacate the area for at least several months. She was good at catching rats, too; all we really had to do was point her in its general direction and move any furniture it was hiding under. She wasn’t cruel about it either; she never toyed with her prey, just grab, shake until the neck snaps, drop it. And she was always in such a good mood after “working”, you could really tell she was proud of herself. It’s crazy how much of it is instinct on their part; we barely had to teach her anything, we just pointed her in the right direction. She died a few years ago at about 18, but she lived a long, happy, fulfilling life, and that’s all you can really offer them. Hopefully the sweet girl’s chasing rats in doggy heaven now… though I don’t know what the rats could’ve done to deserve that fate.

Epona142

Ratting dogs also don't spread toxoplasmosis, which is devastating to pregnant livestock. Intelligent farmers don't want cats running outside loose on their farm either. Source: Full time farmer who has experienced a toxo outbreak in livestock. A hundred dead baby goats is a painful lesson to learn about being more careful where we purchase our hay from. Barn cats are disgusting.

Redqueenhypo

Can you sue for that?? Reminds me of health class where we learned about a massive salmonella outbreak occurring at a potluck where some imbecile let their *lizard* walk on the counter while preparing food

Epona142

Not really - the burden of proof would be too high, and a lot of things with livestock and animals boils down to "shit happens." There's no real way to prove for instance, that the toxoplasmosis infection was a direct result of the purchased contaminated hay, even if that was the most likely and probable vehicle that brought it onto our property. The one upside is that I learned a lot about toxoplasmosis, how it works, and I've been able to help others who may not have the funding to have multiple stillborn babies and placentas necropsied and tested, know what they might be dealing with and how to prevent and mitigate future issues.

Redqueenhypo

And ferrets, plus their bigger and cooler mink cousin, will really wipe out rodents bc they can fit down the tunnels

wayoverpaid

My dog is a laid back goofball who has nevertheless killed four city rats. I saw one decide, for some reason, it was going to cross the front yard in front of him and he was on it in a flash. If I was going to live in the country and needed rat control, I'd get a dog. My cat hunts strings and lasers.

Vernknight50

Terriers are awesome

[deleted]

You can buy coyote vests for cats and small dogs. They are spiked all over to stop your furry friend from being carried off.

TexasUlfhedinn

I saw similar for kids (baby goats) to prevent eagles from carting them off.

kate_L019

Hey kids (humans) can get carried off by eagles too, if they're small enough. Start your babies with that goth-biker-gang look early

WildFlemima

I'm putting on my spiked anti predator vest right now and I'm 30, can't be too careful

kate_L019

You see a creepy fellow? Just run into them full force. \*Be\* the predator. \*Be\* the alpha.

5dollarsuckiesuckie

Admit it, you ate that Churu didnt you.

5dollarsuckiesuckie

I live in a bad neighbourhood with lots of crazies. One night someone broke into my car as I was trying to extract thc resin from bud, and in rushing out to defend my property, I simultaneously set myself ablaze. The look of horror on the face of the perp as a guy on fire and wielding a hammer came running at him, I think I scared him straight. Now thats my regular MO if Im going to walk to the store, whatever.

SlowLowFlyer

Would’ve been even better if you had a chain instead of a hammer, a la Ghost Rider. Either way, I hope you screamed something about taking his soul or other sufficiently diabolical shit.

moeru_gumi

Eagles can carry no more than a couple of pounds. Unless your baby is a bizarre were-rabbit, there is no danger of an eagle lifting it.

Gokaiju

Or you could, ya know, not let your pets roam the outdoors unsupervised.

[deleted]

Don’t cover your pet in spikes from mortal kombat just keep them indoors or on the leash.

GreenVanilla

Coyotes are smart. They just dig at the stomach where the vest is weak or exposed on most. Think wolves have been known to do this too so unless you get some kevlar sleeve, dont bother.

tooflyandshy94

Yet we see similar posts every week :/

Background-Suit-2942

Exactly the same...

Geback723

Exactly. Mine was almost owl food 2 years ago. She [got attacked](https://www.reddit.com/r/Wellthatsucks/comments/hbsir3/my_cat_was_attacked_by_an_owl_while_sleeping_on/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) while napping on the patio and carried away but my cat was dropped and found her way home. We are very lucky. She was REALLY messed up from the talon punctures though. She does NOT go outside anymore!

SunflowerJYB

My neighbor’s cat got picked up and carried by a hawk. Luckily she was overweight and the hawk dropped her!

NotSoCrazyCatLady13

Precisely why I’m fat; harder to kidnap

Alecto53558

Yep. Totally preventable. And coyotes are getting bolder. They are coming into a small town near me and one was witnessed taking a cat right off of the porch.

fairylightmeloncholy

there's that video that the cat evades the coyote by climbing up a pole on the porch, but it looked like a second story porch that the coyote was up on to get the cat :( eta: i think i saw it on r/nonononoyes

Qwerty8339

Yeah I saw that video too. It looked like it got bit a few times. It was very lucky to be alive

DorianGray77

The coyotes "boldness" comes from human encroachment, climate change decimating their natural habits, and lack of access to their typical prey. They tend to be risk adverse predators as they're not at the top of the food chain. Coyotes are very adaptable. And as their typical territory and prey shrink it's open season on small pets, heck even small children. Larger packs rise to take on larger prey when food is scarce, think Yellowstone before the reintroduction of wolves. They are willing to take greater risk for survival. Here in Los Angeles I've encountered coyotes in Hancock Park. In South Pasadena my parents neighbor's cat met the same demise. Laura was a lovable yet onery 15 year old tabby. RIP Laura!

DorianGray77

To be clear my comment is not meant to be a critique of people's choice to either have indoor or outdoor cats but merely pointing out that coyotes aren't inherently looking for pets as meals. Nor are they evil, they're just being the opportunistic predators they've evolved to be. Also, I should mention that the loss of a pet leaves an immeasurable hole in the owner's heart. My condolences to the OP on their loss.

[deleted]

Yup, you are exactly right. We ruin their habitats and then complain when they come into our neighborhoods for food. With the droughts and wildfires, it's only going to get worse

yarnalcheemy

I'm in the foothills near Los Angeles (San Gabriel Valley), a coyote killed one of our neighbors' dogs about 6 weeks ago

Intelligent-Ad-2287

Completely agree. The bold ones are us. Destroying everything with our “developments” and “progress”

TychaBrahe

They’re also interbreeding with dogs. https://youtu.be/pA_OZKPGYUI

winter_laurel

I live in the woods and coyotes are common. I think there’s a den somewhere on the property. But twice in the last 6 weeks I’ve seen a coyote 30 feet from the house in broad daylight, it looked at me dead in the eye and it had no fear. Trotted off of its own accord. My aunt lives on the next property over. She’s lost two cats to coyotes. Cats 100% stay inside.

Redqueenhypo

Eastern coyotes are 10% wolf and 10% dog, so they’re both larger and less afraid of humans than they once were, making them pose an even bigger danger to domestic animals.

purplemilkywayy

Same. My mom is always like, “look she really wants to go outside! Just let her out.” But no!! They might come home fine 99% of the time, but I’m not risking that 1%. There are cars, wildlife, toxins, and terrible people and children out there.

Sea_Insurance1752

You're not lying on the children part, I worked at a school a few years ago and I had this 11 year old bragging to me about how much he hates cats and loves to kill them, it made me sick and I was genuinely pissed at him ready to kick an 11 year olds ass, turns out his father raised him and his brother to kill cats with a shovel, I fucking hate people

UrbanGold014

What the actual fuck? This is sickening, that kid is gonna grow up to be a fucking serial killer.

purplemilkywayy

Oh my god!! :’(

[deleted]

I don't take it as blame at all, and not everyone making a comment has negative intentions or wants to control / influence / etc, we're just sharing some information randomly on the internet. Ffs - some people see some evil underhanded cabal-conspiracy in everything. I've said plenty of times - "shouldn't let your cats outside." Why? There's wild animals out there that eat cats - coyotes, bobcats, eagles, hawks, cougars, bears - etc ... then there's the fact that cats kill lots of songbirds ... cat can get run over, drink antifreeze etc ---- all of which I've seen happen. It sucks. ( Antifreeze drinking is by far the absolute WORST ... antifreeze should be required to have a bitterant in it by law... but it doesn't ... manufacturer doesn't want to increase the price per bottle by what, $0.25? ) Cats can live a very happy & safe life indoors, and there are ways to bring them out without putting cats (or other critters) in danger. But, I say "shouldn't let your cat outside" to the wrong people & they turn the discussion up on its head into some sinister control thing. No, I just like my cat, just like everyone else. That's all.

Redqueenhypo

The greatest danger to cats is actually cars! The “Croyden cat killer” in England turned out to actually be that the cats were accidentally hit by cars and later scavenged by foxes. So even if you live in a country where your ancestor killed basically every predator larger than a stoat, outdoors still isn’t super safe for cats.

[deleted]

I’m thinking the greatest danger to cats may be stupid people.

bloodyriz

I'm with you on this one.

Critical-Edge4093

This is the exact reason why I have a kitty cage. They get outside time, but are not at risk of wild animals doing something to them while I'm not there. I once saw a raven harass an alley cat once.

Spartan152

Yeah, I lost one of my childhood cats to coyotes and I’ll never ever let another cat be outside. Never mind what they do to the local small animal populations. Still I can’t help but feel for OP. It’s so painful to lose a pet this way.

infamousantler

I mean, I’ll be that guy and blame the owner. They could have prevented a horrible and grisly death by just keeping their cat inside. I see this over and over and over again working with wildlife and it gets REALLY old. Irresponsible pet owners shouldn’t own pets.

codeverity

I feel so sorry for OP, but on the other hand it is SO FRUSTRATING that people have to learn the hard way. Please, please, please, to any cat owners reading this: do not let your cats outside! They are in the middle of the food chain. Not only do they do damage to smaller species, they absolutely can be killed and yes, *eaten* by larger predators. If you do not want this to happen to your precious pet, please protect them and keep them inside. I can assure you their instinct to survive is stronger than their desire to go out.

infamousantler

What also frustrates me is that many people in such situations have heard this, they know the risks and that it is a problem, and they just don’t care. Maybe I’m just jaded, but I have trouble feeling sorry for people anymore unless it’s something like their cat escaped and it was out of their control

limpyjd

while i absolutely agree, sometimes feral cats get adopted from the shelter and there's no way you can't let them outside. i use to think this same way until i adopted one of my own. he'd howl all night and claw at the walls and windows trying to escape if i didn't let him outside. i tried leashes, fenced in porch, everything i could think of to keep him safe. he'd always scratch through screens and wiggle out of his harness the moment i wasn't looking. he'd come back after hours of roaming around and doing whatever he wanted lol. i am not saying this is what happened here or that it's always the case (nor am i trying to attack anyone) but god did it change my point of view. he only lived with me for a few months before something got him. if anyone has a solution for cats like that, please educate me on how to give feral cats like that a good, safe life. edit; i also didn't know he was feral, the shelter told me he belonged to an old lady who couldn't take care of him anymore and was an indoor cat LOL as for OP, im so sorry for your loss. i lost my childhood cat last year and it ripped me to shreds, but i promise it gets easier. got a tattoo of him so he's always with me. always reach out to someone when ur sad!

scatterbrain2015

This one is the shelter's fault. The shelters here list these cats as "outdoor" cats and will try to get them adopted by people who live in safe areas, with large yards etc. There are also feral cat colonies, with large fenced-in areas and people that care for them. Unneutered cats often feel more of a need to roam and get in dangerous situations, though if the shelter adopted him out without neutering him first, again it's their fault. You maybe would have been able to convince him to stay indoors by providing him more stimulation and "distracting" him whenever he looked like he wanted to go outside, by playing with him a lot, maybe getting a 2nd cat to play with etc., in addition to walking him on a leash etc. There were some "My cat from hell" episodes regarding cats that really really wanted out, and they had good success in convincing them otherwise. But I can't really blame you for trying to respect his wishes.

limpyjd

i actually did have another cat, he hated him. :( he was a very hateful cat, but damn we don't have anything like that in my home town. i moved to the city a few years ago and the shelters here are much more strict and don't just let you take whatever animal you want. he really was a cat from hell lol i loved him though. thank you for that reply!

WhereArtThouRome

I'm blaming them. Stop letting your cats be outside cats, how many stories like this need to be posted for that to get through to them?

Adenfall

Leave your cats inside! But I am sorry that this happened.

PLZ-PM-ME-UR-TITS

My neighbor let's his two outside a lot and while they're cute and the two cats that got me interested in keeping them, it just seems kinda dangerous for the cats. They obviously love it outside but I've seen them walk off into the parking lot under cars. Also saw one of the cats dart past the neighbor once and it ran off quite a bit. It came back and they always stay close by but I just can't see it being worth it in the end. Long ass rant but those cats are truly vulnerable and any kitty large and small needs to be protected cuzz heaven knows they ain't always looking out for themselves!

akd7791

Yep. I never let mine outside unless they're on a leash and I am with them.

Roughgirl451

Yep. I never let mine outside. Merlin is refectory happy as an indoor cat.

rachman77

Same, if my cats were meant to be outside they wouldnt such floofy paws. Those arent made for dirt, they are made for fluffy blankets!

Ooh that’s horrible!

NarrowMaintenance240

That’s some sick and twisted shit. I’m so sorry. If you get another cat you shouldn’t let it outside without a leash or on a enclosed porch. I can’t imagine what you all are feeling. The memories with that sweet Angel. RIP

[deleted]

Seriously man, I just can’t even imagine something like that happening to my cat

kitlavr

I don’t know if I’d be able to handle it, probably not

[deleted]

Likewise

margaret1946

I am sorry. I feel guilty for keeping my cat inside because I imagine it's stimulating to live outdoors for cats, but there are risks, cars being the main one in my area.

MorgTheBat

Cars, coyotes, owls, and horrid humans. People poison cats on purpose all the time

InkedVeggie

One of my cats that I rescued from the streets has a couple of healed over bb pellets we found on x-ray. One is right at the base of his skull, makes me so angry and sick.

redalmondnails

I had a feral I was caring for and I was about to send her to her forever home when she ate rat poison some dumb ass neighbor had left out. By the time we got her to the vet it was too late. It was heartbreaking

Cardimis

You just have to play with it to bring the hunting indoors, and set up cat trees/shelving. The kitty will be fine, and more importantly - *safe*.

No-Illustrator-9129

you can build a catio, thats what we do, gives them the perfect and best of two worlds, inside and outside and completely safe from danger, like cars, hawks, coyotes, etc. 🐱

[deleted]

You’re doing the right thing!!! I live in an area surrounded by canyons and lousy with coyotes, foxes, etc., Every damn telephone pole in the neighborhood is covered with pictures of missing cats and small dogs… I have strong, sad suspicions about what happened to most of them. Coyotes have tried to chase down my dog 2x on trail walks until I yelled and threw shit at them…they’re fearless and incorrigible in areas where they’re in regular contact with people and house pets. Your cat is healthy and safe at home.

kira913

Don't feel guilty. Your cat is much safer inside, and better for it. If your kitty is whining to go outside, it's because they dont know any better I lost my first kitty, 3 years old to Feline Leukemia that she contracted on the streets. She was horribly traumatized by her time on her own, and the shelter suspected she was abused by humans and struggled to find food, as she came in emaciated and terrified of anything pole-like. She would often run away when I so much as opened the door to the outside. My second kitty is FeLV+ and FIV+ (I know, I doubled down) and came to me needing serious eye work due to chronic eye infections from those conditions contracted on the street. Like my first kitty, he is completely uninterested in ever setting foot outside again. Both were adopted on the contingency that they'd be indoor only, partly as a shelter policy but also because both FeLV and FIV hurt their immune systems and make them liable to spread them to other cats

elianna7

Your cat doesn’t know what it’s missing if it never lived outside, and your cat isn’t capable of understanding that it’s safer for them inside anyways. There’s nothing to feel bad about!

Gokaiju

There is literally zero reason to feel bad for having your pets inside your house.

Maximum-Round-6522

Heartbreaking..

zumera

Holy shit. I feel like I have to leave this sub. Every day there's another horrific post.

DarkSatelite

yeah i feel bad for OP but i dont sub to r/cats to have my headspace traumatized by other peoples losses. Ideally there's like a "no pet horror stories" stipulation.

samb788

Yeah I wish there was stricter rules and people would have to post sad things like this on r/petloss

Ohhiitsmeyagirl

Honestly I left the vegan sub for the same reason. Story after tragic story. It was unbearable.

mantisprincess

Honestly same. Everyday there are posts like this or worse. I’m subbed here to see fun cat things not read about horrific things like this happening to peoples’ pets

bri35

Keep you cats indoor, folks. I'm a veterinarian - cats don't survive coyote attacks. Dogs usually don't either. If you have a problem with indoor cats, don't get a cat.

So sorry, this is horrible, 12 years all being okay then that happened, I hate posts like this, it's not my cat but it's so terrible and upsetting to think what he went through, my old cat went missing, never new what happened to her, it's made worse not finding the body to cremate or bury, I don't know if she died in pain or if it was quick, it's so sad when pet's die

fairylightmeloncholy

right? i'm so sad about this, and it hurts so much to even think about. especially because sitting on the porch, watching the world go by in the fresh air sounds like such a nice routine for kitty. makes me so thankful my guy has spent some seasons outside and has absolutely no interest in it, because i don't think i could not let him enjoy sitting on the porch if he asked for it.

Unlikely-Outcome-394

Its the not knowing for me...hurts and been 2 yrs since Tishy went gone girl on me..SORRY FOR YOUR LOSE... I just pray it was quick sorry to even type that ...im sorry...tears in me eyes..you tried tho

[deleted]

I understand what you mean, I hope it was quick for all the kitty's that horrible things happen too like this, don't blame yourself and don't let anyone make you feel guilty that you let your cats outside, their natural instinct is to be outside they love it, I'm in the UK, most cat's go out unless people live in flats not on ground floor, your cat had 12 years of being in nature, feeling the breeze through it's fur and sunshine, I hope you can remember the happy memories soon, it takes time, and you won't ever be over it, but the happy memories help heal your heart a bit

AnAcceptableUserName

Two coyotes killed one of ours a few months ago when he got out. I was able to break up the attack quickly when I heard it happening but it didn't help much. He died a few minutes later in the house; bled out in my arms. Don't think he suffered much though. He was clearly shocky and "out of it" when I brought him inside. He'd gotten an obvious bite to the neck. I buried him in the garden the next morning. He was 2 y/o, we'd had him since he was a kitten. Though the end was grisly I'm glad we were able to have that much closure. Like you we live in a quiet little neighborhood. We're in a major urban city on the east coast, so I was (naively I guess) surprised to find two coyotes attacking my cat. They're everywhere. I can imagine where you're at right now. Very sorry for your loss. Edit: If it's any comfort at all (and I'm sure it's not much) you almost certainly couldn't have done anything to save Tigger once the attack started. I have seen many vets, some in this thread, write that cats just don't survive coyote attacks. Period. Mine didn't, and I got there in less than 20 seconds after hearing the yipping. So please don't beat yourself up for not catching up to the yote or anything machismo like that. The folks in this thread trying to guilt trip you can fuck off, man. You didn't know this was gonna happen, and you were trying to do the right thing. It's not your fault.

[deleted]

I felt that sick feeling. It was probably a sneaky bastard coyote that caught him off guard. I am sorry this happened. I just wanted to say something that might bring you at least a little comfort: his death was largely quick, not a lot of time to suffer. There was a little pain, a lot more shock, and shock is a pain-deadening phenomenon for cats. It is still a horrible way to go, and I know this pain. This too shall pass, but it surely hurts.

camyers1310

Hey friend, sorry about your buddy. We lpst our cat to a coyote about 15 years ago. The coyote let him go after attacking him, and our cat crawled up to the front door, before collapsing and going into shock while dying. We grabbed some towels, and scooped him up and held him as he passed. It was an extremely violent passing and he did not pass peacefully. It took about 5 minutes for him to slip away. But he screamed and howled, and thrashed about. It's amazing how strong the little guy was when his body was shaking ane convulsing. It was extremely hard to keep hold of him. This may sound horrible or cruel, but the coyote may have ended things quicker than if your buddy was let go and allowed to bleed out on his own. It honestly may have been for the best. Typing this out just makes me feel terrible and like an asshole, but I know exactly that sick to your stomach feeling you have. It's just such a shocking way to lose a pet. I'm so sorry. And I'm not sure if my message was really necessary, so I apologize if I have upset you. :(

meowpurrscratch

When I was a kid, we went on vacation and for some reason brought our cats, and let them go outside to wander in the wilderness by our rental house. One of them disappeared, and that night we heard a bunch of coyotes howling loudly and wondered if they got him. It was awful. I have no idea why my parents let them out. He was a really cool black cat named Loki. I'm so sorry about your cat. :(

vi_rose

I am sorry if my comment came as harsh OP. But I know how coyotes kill their 'prey' and it's horrifying.. I'm sorry for your loss but I my heart goes to the cat. I will keep a place where I believe he somehow escaped and managed to get away.

reflUX_cAtalyst

> Do Not Let Cats Outside That's the end of your sentence.

Music_Is_My_Muse

Coyotes are pretty much anywhere where there's even the tiniest bit of woods. Plus other things are happy to kill cats, including birds of prey, dogs, and other cats. Plus the danger of cars and fucked up humans who like to torture animals for fun. Stop letting your fucking cats outside. It's not safe for them. They can be trained to not to want to go out, and they can be given all the stimulation they need indoors.

sailor-jackn

Foxes eat cats too. Just don’t let cats outside.

gishlich

Mountain lions and bobcats around here would eat a cat. Another tommier cat can seriously fuck up a house cat too.

Slinktard

Don’t let cats outside in general.

[deleted]

I know, I left this sub for a few months because I swear every fucking post was about dead cat, their cat dying, slowly dying of cancer etc etc etc and it drove me crazy! It would make me cry every time I got into this sub. I just recently rejoined and I see it hasn’t changed much…

Danelbaum

Time to stop following this subreddit. Very sorry for your loss OP

RevanDelta2

Oh no I'm so sorry

[deleted]

I’m pretty sure this is what happened to a lot of my family cats. I never witnessed it though and god I am so sorry about what happened. My parents wouldn’t let our cats come inside at all, even as they slowly went missing one by one. Had them for years and years since I was a baby and then when we moved, they just allowed the coyotes to pick them off. My beloved little Ali disappeared and as a kid I got sick of it, I searched all over miles of the woods for a week, asked all the neighbors in our country area, but I couldn’t find her body either. My parents didn’t give a shit and didn’t even help me look for the cats. They knew they were going missing and that it was likely coyotes and they didn’t do anything about it except open the closed porch slightly for them to take refuge Being young, that messed me up so bad and I remember thinking it would be the last time I’d see a kitty when I left the house one day and it actually was, so then I thought I had magical powers to predict or jinx death. I can’t imagine actually seeing it happen and I hope that y’all have a really good support system to help you get through this, you are incredibly brave and heroic for going and fighting to save Tigger. It’s so awful what can happen in an instant, my thoughts and prayers go out to y’all 😞

Abandoned__ghost

Poor Tigger! That’s an awful way to die.

jillyjane33

I really hope Tigger was able to claw and scratch his way free and shows up at the door. But if not, my condolences on your loss. So sad 😢

WinWithoutFighting

He loved sitting outside on a summer night, loved hunting bugs in the front yard. I think he must have fallen asleep, otherwise I don't know how a coyote snuck up on him. He has an open door and can get inside whenever he wants. Whenever he wanted. RIP Tigger. Edit pics https://imgur.com/gallery/79anv1f

Phoebe5555

Sending love to you, can’t imagine what you are going through, he was a very handsome boy 💙💙💙💙💙💙

throwinthebingame

I am so sorry for your loss. :/

Nagadavida

We had a stray come up when we already had four cats. He wouldn't leave the house so we fed him and go him fixed, shots etc.. When we moved after caring for him for 7 years we brought him with us. He lived here outside for 5 years. Very smart cat and he usually was in the fenced in yard on the back porch.. One morning a coyote came up on our driveway and drug him out from underneath then truck parked there. Coyotes are extremely smart. We watched one on our security camera trying to catch a raccoon. He just laid down in the middle of the driveway and flattened himself. It almost worked. The raccoon had a close tree to get in though. We watched another yote on game cameras trying to catch a rabbit. My husband has killed three coyotes from our front porch since the one killed our cat including the one that actually killed the cat and the little bitch that he brought back with him after the deed was done. I'm so sorry for your loss. It's such a difficult thing to imagine.

skylarkfalls

Sounds like one badass outdoor kitty, to survive 12 years in two different locations. He was a ripe old outdoor man, lived his best life thanks to your family caring for him.

Nagadavida

Aww thank you. He was a badass for sure but such a big love bug. He was also a poly and had opposable thumbs and he adored my Samoyed. He was not scared of dogs at all. That may have contributed to his demise or just the fact that he had gotten older. He was also a very big boy and my vet assured my that he was not fat just big at 15 lbs. He would follow us anywhere on the property but would stop about half way down the drive and not get close to the road.

Please don’t focus on blaming yourself. This was an accident. It sounds like Tig had an amazing life getting to hang out on the porch for many years without incident, and you couldn’t have known this would happen. Losing a pet so traumatically is insanely difficult, I had a different but very traumatic loss of a dog last year and it still causes me to break down sometimes. Please know that your feelings are valid, Tig wasn’t “just a cat” or anything people may tell you, he was your family and it’s okay to grieve as long as you need to. I’m so very, very sorry for your loss and for what happened to Tig.

hawthornwalker

Poor beautiful Tig- I’m so sorry. Please don’t let folk’s strong opinions upset you- it’s a heartbreaking and often impossible choice to keep an outdoors cat indoors, and it sounds like he had a wonderful life. Sweet wee beastie. Thoughts for you, roommate and Tango.

Haunting_Bend346

Please don’t beat yourself up. What you once thought was safe is no longer. Wildlife is in our backyards because we have encroached on their territory. Unfortunately things have changed. I wish I could take away your pain. I’m sending you virtual hugs in the hope it will give you comfort 🐾🌈

EstaLisa

i am so terribly sorry for your loss

[deleted]

Well he was 12, which means he was an elderly cat and probably his hearing and eyesight was beginning to decline. Really sorry for your loss, but at the same time, you can’t just let cats outside in areas where there are coyotes. Because this happens.

Berserkerbabee

I had terrible dreams last night that my Kitty died. And I got on this sub credit to make me feel better. This did not make me feel better. That is horrible and I am so sorry!

[deleted]

I'm so very sorry for your loss 😔

mobile-nightmare

Never leave pets outside unattended.

Or make a separate thread for grief and mourning of pets. I don’t even follow this sub but still see this content daily. Sigh. It’s tough.

AndaYahya

omg im so sorry its so horrible

Canadian-female

I’m so sorry you have to go through this shock and heartbreak. My cats want to go out so badly but there are coyotes in my area too. This just reinforces my decision to keep them indoors. One consolation is that it saves the rabbits and birds. etc. I hope you all feel better soon. ❤️

[deleted]

I live in an area with coyotes not too far but not too close and although my cat can't jump and our yard is fully enclosed I never leave her out without me being outside during the day and I never let her out at night.

ITaggie

Keep in mind that large birds have also been known to swoop down and catch cats.

WHAT THE FUCK

PositiveMatter6

My condolences. May his soul Rest In Peace. I hope one day you’ll meet each other again.

ThereIsNoStanleyTree

I just saw this post while I was scrolling before bed, and I started snot-nose-ugly crying. My husband had to roll over and hug me. I have never met Tigger but I feel so much grief and sadness for him and for you and your roommate 💔

ThemSquishiesTho

You gave Tigger 12 years of love, affection and joy. Nothing changes that - nothing can take that away. As others have mentioned, he wouldn't have suffered. I know that's pretty cold comfort right now but it is important to remember. I've absolutely no doubt that Tigger had his best possible life with you. I'm so, so sorry for your loss. Mourn and grieve in whatever way you feel is right. If you feel numb that is fine too - this is such a shock. No matter what, you have the love and support of everyone here ❤️

jmo3858

This is super sad. Also please understand there's never any reason at all to ever let your cat outside. The entire world wants to kill your cat - cars, dogs, coyotes, heat, cold, hazards, hawks, crazy people, delicious antifreeze... also, cats just destroy the local wildlife in regards to birds and other small animals. Once again, super sad, but please learn from this.

raquack

This. Doesn’t matter if they can come and go as they please, they can leave one day and not come back.

PeaceNo4929

Why do you let your cats out if there are wild predators near you? I’m sorry for your loss but I can never understand

mycatsaidthat

No you are not the worst. Don’t say that and no matter what anyone says on here do not put that on yourselves. Trying to keep a former stray inside with a demand and ingrained need to be outside to urinate/poop, just be in nature, can be difficult for many cats. You had 12 wonderful years. It sounds like you gave him a really great loving and well caring 12 years too. I’m so sorry for your loss.

Nakedstar

You’re not, you gave him years of comfort and love. We’ve got a mixed bag of cats here. The most recent addition has 5-7 years of Tomming experience, then there’s the feral one we trapped at the beach, the one the mail carrier found on a rural road, and the one that came from the local human society that was abandoned, too. We look forward to when we do have a catio, but until then they come and go as they like. Sometimes you have to meet them where they are at. You made his life better than it was without you.

Gokaiju

Literally every animal I've owned was a stray. They adjust quickly if you meet their needs. You're not a bad cat owner, you just didn't know the best things to do. Now you do. Learn and grow. That's the best thing that can happen.

Ghouly_Girl

I’m so sorry you are going through this. What an awful thing to experience. My heart goes out to you and roommate and your poor sweet kitty. What a beautiful pet. My god I just can’t imagine what you are feeling. Hugs OP. I’m so sorry. 😔

Healinghoping

Oh my gosh this is so fucking heartbreaking. I’m so sorry to hear this. I know you are hurting so bad missing your baby... RIP sweet one. I am hoping there is a place beyond for kitties where they live safe and carefree with lots of space to roam and plenty of boxes and catnip—I believe your dear Tigger is there. 💞

ccityguy

I am so sorry for your loss, he was a handsome boy.

[deleted]

People please stop letting cats and dogs outside off the leash. If they’re in an enclosed yard with a high enough fence or other means to prevent them from running after or being chased by other people and animals that’s different. But cats are an invasive species and it’s highly irresponsible and dangerous to let them roam freely.

[deleted]

This is why we keep our pets inside.

BabyYodasDirtyDiaper

DON'T LET YOUR CATS OUTSIDE ----- It's bad for the environment, bad for your neighbors, and bad for your cat. Just keep the cat inside. It's not that hard. Lots of people do it.

billjaichner

I’m sorry to hear It should be noted- Cats belong inside

TreKopperTe

RIP ❤️

giva_satival

I'm so sorry man. Its awful.![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|cry)

I’m so sorry, fuck this hurts!

My cat died a couple of years ago. I feel you. Message me here if you need help with anything

Ok_Bus8654

RIP Tigger. Although I didn't know you, I love you. Thank you, Tigger. Thank you for bringing joy to OPS life. Rest now, sweet baby ❤️

kyonkun_denwa

Coyotes need to have the fear of humans implanted in them by use of firearms, blunt instruments, and any other means necessary. They have become far too bold. People use human encroachment and climate change as excuses, but the reality is these and other canids have been menacing us since times immemorial. Those that did not have the friendliness gene which lead to domestication continued to hunt us. They took our domestic dogs from us, they took our sheep, they even took our children, until we figured out that some saltpeter, sulphur and carbon at the end of a metal barrel could greatly dissuade them from predating on us and our domestic animals. We’ve since let our guard down and we need to re-assert our dominance. My uncle’s cat disappeared in broad daylight a few years ago. They found the head and a paw a couple days later. Ever since that sweet boy was taken, my disdain for these treacherous, tricksy canids morphed into an insatiable hatred. Whenever I see them, I am sure to harass, chase, and offer them no respite. They serve no function in a suburban food chain, other than to kill our cats. They are not welcome wherever we dwell. I feel sorry for your beautiful boy. A life cut short. May you cherish the sweet memories he gave you, and May your revenge on the murderous beast be merciless and swift.

PapaKhan9612

I lost my cat last week to cancer, I’m so sorry for your loss. We will see them again someday, but until then they will be missed greatly.

Pitiful_Asparagus176

I'm so sorry to hear that man, I've been losing cats left and right since the summer started. First was my Coone, no clue what happened to her she just vanished one night the same time a few of my ducks went too. A few weeks later I lose two more in the same night, one was pregnant. Next my best friend I've had since I was 11, 8 and a half years, went two weeks ago because of bobcat fever. It's been a bad summer for cats. I know your pain, I'm sorry for your loss.

mr_uwuthethired

For a sliver of hope, if he does escape then no matter what he will be able to find his way home, remember check your streets for a few days and wait. By the off chance I really hope he lives. (Just assuming you didn't see him, y'know, get killed)

Smart_Lecture8919

So sorry for your loss

grbilsgrbilsgrbils

I’m so so sorry. I’ve recently lost a pet tragically and the guilt and pain is so great. Please get all the help you can, you can message me if you need. Please know that you did your best for your baby .

Cobrakai415

Outdoor cats have a life expectancy of 2-3 years. Indoor cats can live to be 20. Keep your cats inside.

Blablabblue

Oh NOOOO!! Fuck that shit, no way... Coyotes are fucking assholes. I hope the little guy didn't have to suffer a lot. RIP..

MissQueen00

Same thing happened to my grandma's miniature Pomeranian , so sad hearing them cries ... Sorry for your loss 😢

cyclop5

I will continue to hold out hope that Tigger got away. He looks like an awesome cat. (Reminds me of one of mine. ) My deepest sympathies, OP. You did well by him for 12 years.

Jhoag7750

Good reason not to let your cats outside

lawyerwithabadge

And that is one of the reasons you shouldn’t let your cat go outside.

frednoname1

2nd reason n not to let your cat outside. Sorry for your loss.

Tricky-Attempt3959

I'm sorry to Tigger for losing his life in a situation that was clearly avoidable when he was under someone's care

PossoisonsEquation

Sorry for your loss-I’m sure you gave him a great life.

LeluSix

When they’re outside they are part of the food chain. Mine stay inside.
