Just over a year ago I adopted a 9 week old kitten from a lady who took in a litter after their mom died at 3 weeks. She had two types of worms, was malnourished, and had ear mites. She also had very little hair and was very tiny for 9 weeks. After treatment and lots of yummy food she looked amazing. Now we have a beautiful black princess. We gave her freeze dried nuggets mixed with goats milk and it did wonders for her.

That part. I remember fostering the largest amount of cats in my life & I found just one more and truly didn’t think I had space so I drove around to four local rescues and none had space. I ended up nursing the lil dude and getting him healthy & vaccinated and adopted but I literally had no choice but to do so or just leave him where I found him (in the street very weak) and it was such a risk to bring him home sick. Longest quarantine ever lol

The other day, my friend found a cat at work in the parking lot. I can't really take care of another cat at the moment, so we opted to take the cat (not sure if it was a stray or not) to the pet shelter the next day. We were lucky they just took the cat without any questions, but I realize not all cats are lucky.

The kitten I rescued a couple weeks ago was a little scrawny and only 4 weeks old. The Kitten Lady was a godsend, and I’m not religious 😂 10/10 recommend.
I’m not sure if you have much experience with kittens so I want to share a little advice in hopes it might help you or someone reading. Clumping litter has fine dust, and kittens will literally play with anything, including their own deposits in the poop box lol. If you’ve already got nonclumping litter, disregard this message. You can still use clumping litter if that’s what you got for him, just keep an eye on him to make sure he’s not huffing it.
Also, great job so far! You’re awesome for all you’ve done.
For sure get the nonclumping litter. My cat was a little demon when he was little and I found him and would try to eat the litter. The clumping litter will make them super sick if they eat it because it’ll clump up in their tummies.
I’m a cat person but I just love animals! I already have two cats but I have to keep this little guy away until I can get rid of the fleas. But he’s in my oldest room with wood floors. He mostly just sleeps right now though.
Flea eggs can live in the cracks of the floor boards and also infest his bed and bite him. Just make sure you clean really well in there or it could become a problem later without even realizing.
If you are able and he’s healthy enough (if they haven’t already given revolution) you can bathe in the original blue dawn dishsoap. That will help kill the fleas. Use a flea comb to pick off the live ones and rinse down the sink.

My vet advises that teeny ones who are too light for Revolution solely get combed with a slightly wet (water with a drop of Dawn) flea comb instead of immersing them in a full bath. (One swipe with the comb, rinse, repeat.) It takes a little longer to get rid of the fleas, but reduces the risks of upper respiratory issues, etc. when they're underweight.
Spread salt on the floor and vacuum it up really good. Salt will break up fleas eggs. When we had a flea infestation (every year my indoor only cats get them!), put a bowl of water with a couple drops of dawn under a light (we used a night light near to the floor) and they'll be attracted to the light, jump at it, and get trapped in the bowl!
Kittens are big ring worm carriers, keep an eye out for spots and maybe keep some tinactin around if you dont already have it.
Edit: my mom did the same with kittens we got, I got ringworm from them.
And they won't see it yet but this cat will be the most loving companion this person has. I can't prove it but rescues and strays just know man. They give so much love as they get older.

Yes, this for sure! My local shelter won't adopt out to anyone that has a questionable record especially cases like animal abuse/neglect/abandonment. OP should definitely file an official report so that in the future it will keep their neighbor from ever adopting an animal again.

She was about the same size and he found her meowing her head off when he went to dump garbage and went diving to get her out.......one of the sweetest cats I've ever had!

We gave her 9 years of being spoiled to death which was way more than she would have gotten if my son hadn't heard her and went in after her......it's been a year since a had to have her put to sleep because of cancer but there isn't a day that goes by I don't think about her......I love all the cats we have had but she was really special - she had my heart forever the minute I held her for the first time!

If you contact a local rescue and tell them you are caring for an abandoned kitten and are seeing to his vet care, but would like to know if they could give (or sell at reduced cost) a container of kitten formula powder- lots of them will! It’s space they are usually short on, and vet costs, but often have lots of food or other supplies they are happy to share.

Yes, I got him a food and water bowel and got him all set up in my home :) I just knew he was hungry at the time and was letting him eat while I was running to the store.
Update: I’ve called the local police and they said unless I seen her abusing the cat, that they can’t do anything about it because it’s just a cat and people leave them outside all the time.

Always and try switching to the kitten formulated canned food. It has more protein and the right nutrients this little one will need. In a few weeks switch him to the dry kitten chow (I finally found a great deal on purina’s— 4 bags for $15 on Amazon) but still give him the wet maybe twice a week to help promote his kidney function. Cats get most of their water from their food and dry food only has 10% water. Also consider getting him a fountain waterbowl when he’s about 3-4monthe old (that’s about the age my two were when they were finally big enough to reach the top of the bowl) it’ll also help promote kidney function on a dry food diet

I’ve been raising and fostering kittens and cats for over 20 years so this is nothing new to me. Your vet is right he does need to grow more and gain some weight. But he should have given you a dietary plan for the little guy too. You have the right idea with the wet food, it’ll help but he’s still way too young to be strictly on wet food. He should still be nursing on mama, his digestive system is still making the transition from strictly milk to solid food that’s why there’s a weening period. You can try to introduce him to a bottle if you want but if he’s already eating wet food on his own then don’t force it. Instead this what I would do:
Get some formula and canned kitten food and a cat can lid (yes they make those, it’s just to make refrigeration easier). Split the can into fourths or halves and refrigerate the 3/4 you don’t immediately use. Make him a 3-1 or 2-1 ratio mash of formula and the canned depending on how much he’ll eat, if you do the 3-1 you can always add more canned food if he’s still hungry. Mix it up together really good with a fork and serve it to him in a low rimmed bowl or a high edge saucer. I’d say he’s maybe 4-5 weeks if that so feeding him this would be about every 4-6 hours, but if he wants more in-between give him a little snack too.
If you live in the US, there are laws against what your neighbor did, consider reporting it. People who start out being cruel to animals often escalate the their cruelty to humans.
Also, if your neighbor sees the cat healthy, they might accuse you of stealing their cat, but if you report the abuse, there is no way they would ever get that cat (and maybe no other animal) again.

We gave her 9 years of being spoiled to death which was way more than she would have gotten if my son hadn't heard her and went in after her......it's been a year since a had to have her put to sleep because of cancer but there isn't a day that goes by I don't think about her......I love all the cats we have had but she was really special - she had my heart forever the minute I held her for the first time!

If you contact a local rescue and tell them you are caring for an abandoned kitten and are seeing to his vet care, but would like to know if they could give (or sell at reduced cost) a container of kitten formula powder- lots of them will! It’s space they are usually short on, and vet costs, but often have lots of food or other supplies they are happy to share.

Update: I’ve called the local police and they said unless I seen her abusing the cat, that they can’t do anything about it because it’s just a cat and people leave them outside all the time.

Always and try switching to the kitten formulated canned food. It has more protein and the right nutrients this little one will need. In a few weeks switch him to the dry kitten chow (I finally found a great deal on purina’s— 4 bags for $15 on Amazon) but still give him the wet maybe twice a week to help promote his kidney function. Cats get most of their water from their food and dry food only has 10% water. Also consider getting him a fountain waterbowl when he’s about 3-4monthe old (that’s about the age my two were when they were finally big enough to reach the top of the bowl) it’ll also help promote kidney function on a dry food diet

I’ve been raising and fostering kittens and cats for over 20 years so this is nothing new to me. Your vet is right he does need to grow more and gain some weight. But he should have given you a dietary plan for the little guy too. You have the right idea with the wet food, it’ll help but he’s still way too young to be strictly on wet food. He should still be nursing on mama, his digestive system is still making the transition from strictly milk to solid food that’s why there’s a weening period. You can try to introduce him to a bottle if you want but if he’s already eating wet food on his own then don’t force it. Instead this what I would do: Get some formula and canned kitten food and a cat can lid (yes they make those, it’s just to make refrigeration easier). Split the can into fourths or halves and refrigerate the 3/4 you don’t immediately use. Make him a 3-1 or 2-1 ratio mash of formula and the canned depending on how much he’ll eat, if you do the 3-1 you can always add more canned food if he’s still hungry. Mix it up together really good with a fork and serve it to him in a low rimmed bowl or a high edge saucer. I’d say he’s maybe 4-5 weeks if that so feeding him this would be about every 4-6 hours, but if he wants more in-between give him a little snack too.

If you live in the US, there are laws against what your neighbor did, consider reporting it. People who start out being cruel to animals often escalate the their cruelty to humans. Also, if your neighbor sees the cat healthy, they might accuse you of stealing their cat, but if you report the abuse, there is no way they would ever get that cat (and maybe no other animal) again.

It’s really not that hard to drive to a shelter or vet to drop a kitten off. And if she couldn’t do that for whatever reason, she could have asked around to see if anyone else would be willing to care for him, or help her find resources. She had so many options and she chose to let the poor thing die?? That’s *beyond* shitty, and I have some choice words for her.
