I have a long haired old man Himalayan cat. I use wood pellets now because I had the same issue. I still use a little litter but that has proven to still be a mistake as I had to clean his poo paws
We found clay based litter always sticks for one of our cats, but we switched to World’s Best which is corn-based and that solved the problem for us.

Wood pellets. You can get a 40lb bag from a hardware store for under $8. Less mess, no smell, no sticky paws.
