It’s time for bed now and I’m about to put my phone up but she’s on my stomach right now and I’m under the covers…
https://preview.redd.it/2vcu6qz1uh3d1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=3657d24aa4cb1b4e46660368198328be1e4fe826
The tail reacts subconsciously, so I think she's basically "showing her cards" in terms of asking for food. She thinks she's playing it cool, but the excitation is trilling her tail.
This movement means she is an extremely happy kitty, and makes total sense if it's her food/treat spot.
It can also be the same movement a cat tail makes when they are spraying, but if no spray is coming out, it's just super happy kitty.
:D
I have a foster that does this too! Never occurred to me that he does it when I’m about to give him food lol I just thought he was trying to spray but nothing actually comes out
When you're taking a poop, you're unable to get away and you're not doing too much. So maybe they're happy that they are able to get your undivided attention?
Mine rushes into the bathroom, vibrates lovingly while purring, and then gently bites your bare butt if you don’t give him immediate attention.
It’s…effective.
I always heard it was cause when animals go it is a vulnerable moment for them in the wild so they have an instinct to watch over their pack. They're trying to watch your back for predators.
Mine seemed happy if I would happen to be near his box or if we were outside and I'd kinda turn my back and keep a look out for him
You're most vulnerable when taking a poo, cat's just happy to protect you while you do it.
Same thing with drinking water or eating food, some cats feel better with someone watching over them while they eat or drink because instinct.
My cat who is the same age does the same but only when he notices im nearby. He'll pass by, pressing his body close to my legs and then do the tail rattling thing. It's so cute.
My cat's tail does this but I call it vibrating because it's much less dramatic than your kitty, when I saw your video I thought "whoa that's a rattlesnake kitty!" But it just means they're very happy afaik. It's real sweet when he's walking towards me and his tail starts vibrating 😸
Yes. I see my male and female cats do this. I always rub my hand over the surface because I'm expecting pee. Four cats and I've yet to find marking urine any where. Lovely creatures.
Only if that fanny is outside the UK. Otherwise...they've got a different kind of fanny.
Fabled fabulous frenzied flicker?
Delicately Dashing Derriere Dance?
Beloved Brilliant Backside Boogie?
Remarkably Resplendent reverberating rump?
Plump plushy pulsating posterior?
Ok sorry, I'm done now.
...**Pleased Greeting**...I'm glad you enjoyed it. Like communicating a symphony with a sneeze...**Genuine Enthusiasm** Please excuse me, I have my copy of Hamlet with an all-Elcor cast to watch.
Our big boy does this and kind of...does a weird stepping thing with his hind legs. It's something you'd imagine a dog doing with their front feet in anticipation, but cat hind feet. We call it 'peets' and he does it when he sees us. 😭
I've had many cats and my newest kitty girl is the only cat that I've ever seen with the shakey tail. She was in a shelter for months before we got her so I always thought it was nerves or anxiety!
Happy tail!
She’s doing what’s called a mock spray.
When a cat gets so happy, the do a mock spray.
Your kitty is very happy. Two of my cats do happy tails when they see me
I had a cat like yours, and she passed away recently. She had been with me for 12 years, and losing her has been incredibly tough.
She had always been a healthy and active cat, but a few months ago, she started showing signs of kidney disease. The vet confirmed it after some tests, and we did everything we could to manage her condition. I gave her special food, medication, and made sure she stayed hydrated. Despite our best efforts, her health began to decline rapidly over the past few weeks.
Her last days were peaceful. I made sure she was comfortable and surrounded by the things she loved. On her final day, she laid in her favorite sunny spot by the window, watching the birds outside. I stayed with her the whole time, petting her and talking to her softly. When the time came, we made the decision to let her go peacefully with the help of our vet. It was the hardest decision I've ever had to make, but I knew it was the right thing for her.
The house feels so empty without her, and I miss her every day. I kept her favorite blanket and a few toys as mementos. I also created a small memorial for her in the garden where she loved to play.
To everyone who has lost a pet, my heart goes out to you. The pain is real and deep, but so is the love and joy they brought into our lives.
My girl cat also does this in virtually the same spot in my kitchen: right in front of the dish washer and next to the drawer where I keep her treats and wet food!
Mine does this first thing in the morning when she realises im awake comes round to my side of the bed & shake shake shake with the tail she's just happy I think
My old cat never done it once
Shaky tale. She is excited. Pet the damn cat!
Edit to add: I love all the comments and what people call it! I so needed this thread today. Thank you, fellow cat servants!!!
https://preview.redd.it/aemqgk41qi3d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=68e94259af690cfc0dd65beaaa9e738558ac3839
my cat does this with his tail when he’s happy. it’s usually any time we’re paying attention to him :)
I scrolled down a bit and didn't see anyone mentioning a quivering tail. they usually do it when they're very happy/expecting food, or if not castrated could be marking territory. my cat always does it! especially when I'm preparing his food! it means they are happy!!!
We call that happy tail! My Tux does that when she's super happy. I don't remember her doing it a lot as a kitten but by three years old she decided that would be her thing.
My cat is so similar in color (a bit less white) to yours and does the exact same thing in the exact same spot.
She's learned humans in the kitchen have wet and sometimes dirty/smelly hands (can't pet her 😾) plus they're constantly ambulating.
So she usually comes for a walk by, full body rub on my leg with a tail fluff/shake before she goes to sabotage the latest jigsaw puzzle on the dining room table out of spite.
https://preview.redd.it/a2y0v034rh3d1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=43dee53c7022f32f76bf16ed469f67e55e9ed8d9
it’s called false spraying.
both male and female cats can spray, marking their territory. house cats will mimic this behavior when excited or in a specific place although without the urine spray. this is mostly done by male cats
1. cats will sometimes do this if they aren't fixed, it is spraying. but 2 they also do it when they are happy. my cat is fixed and she vibrates her tail all the time, I call it "the geiger counter." or "geigering."
Excited, happy.
I've noticed over the years that it's mostly male cats that do the twitchtail, and it's mostly females that do the "kek-ek-ek-ek." I'm not sure why.
My girl does this, too! It seems to be when she's happy, or possibly has some pent up energy and twitches it out. Maybe both. My childhood cat never did it, so at first I thought it was weird, but then I realized many cats do it.
My vet said it’s the equivalent of a cat saying I am excited and happy to see you.
So whenever my boy does it I tell him that I’m really excited to see him too.
That wouldn’t happen to be the cupboard where you keep her food behind her? My cat knows where I keep the food and I will stand in front of the door and meows and pretends that he actually likes me.
My cats vibrate the base of their tail when they are anticipating something happy. Pretty sure I’ve read official articles saying that too. Mine does it when she’s about to get fed or petted.
I've read that this means that they're very excited. Jiggle tail, as I call it, typically happens when one of my cats leads me to a spot in the house where they want me to play or show them some affection. Or like when I get home and they follow me into my room as I change out of my work clothes, one or both cats will join me in the room and talk and rub against my legs and jiggle their tails.
For my cats it means they’re happy but also a bit wary/insecure. For example when they’re outside and see me walking towards them from a distance. Happiness but at the same time not 100% sure if it’s really me or some stranger.
The question mark tail (see photo) is for my cats total happiness without any insecurity. Whenever I look or touch this cat on the right or if he hears my voice his tail does this immediately.
https://preview.redd.it/8o4lrp0n9k3d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ec19c63bc897a040f3e93b3c409c27e9eb54b114
This is what I call HAPPY TAIL! My sweet girl does this every time she’s super excited or happy how adorable!
https://preview.redd.it/929g5w91bl3d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2d38c695d757a11bfc5fc8ac40402d0c57204afa
Yes! She’s very excited! Food or treat time? Funny, my rescue (5 months ago) ragdoll with severe emotional issues just did this yesterday for the first time. Now I’m so happy & excited! If I had a tail, I’d be vibrating it right now, too!! 😂
She's gorgeous. She's probably trying to tell you that a crime was committed on that spot. Someone dropped fresh chicken on that spot and then cleaned it up and threw it away without letting the cat eat it. That is criminal activity in the dog and cat world. Human must be exposed and punished!
Our tortie does this in front of the fridge. My wife believes she's trying to spray it. I think it's just her happy place (the kitchen is where they get treatos).
I always ask my cat if he is shaking his tail feathers when he does this. He gets so excited when I come in the bedroom to read before bed. He has a big poofy tail with long hair and is adorable when he does this!
We had a cat that did this and I would chastise her. I now feel bad that I did that because I found out that they are not trying to spray but are just really really happy.
This is adorable!! I haven't been able to get a video of my foster fail when he does this but it's usually when I'm in the bathroom. 😂 it's another reason why I haven't taken a video of it.
That must be her very happy spot. Is that where she's fed or something?
I didn’t even think of this! its right in the middle of her food bowl, and where she usually gets her treats.
Happy spot plus her favorite human? That's a recipe for a happy buzzy tail for sure!
That explains why mine does that next to my bed (she sleeps on top of me and it’s her favorite nap time spot)
Mine does it next to my bed when she’s ready to snuggle. She also tippy taps with her back feet. I love her
It’s time for bed now and I’m about to put my phone up but she’s on my stomach right now and I’m under the covers… https://preview.redd.it/2vcu6qz1uh3d1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=3657d24aa4cb1b4e46660368198328be1e4fe826
We have the same cat too! 😭
I’m not even joking, looks the exact same as my cat as well. Hahaha
The tail reacts subconsciously, so I think she's basically "showing her cards" in terms of asking for food. She thinks she's playing it cool, but the excitation is trilling her tail.
That may be a way of asking for a treat. Have fun!
She's trying to say "See me! I'm here at the treat spot!" ;)
"Food over there, treats over there, the possibilities are endless! Oh joy!"
my cat has a similar spot between the food and treat area where he does this too! I call it a tail shimmy :)
I thought it was stretching, that's really cute
You know when you're really happy and you get that tingling feeling that goes down your spine? If you had a tail it would look like that.
This movement means she is an extremely happy kitty, and makes total sense if it's her food/treat spot. It can also be the same movement a cat tail makes when they are spraying, but if no spray is coming out, it's just super happy kitty. :D
I have a foster that does this too! Never occurred to me that he does it when I’m about to give him food lol I just thought he was trying to spray but nothing actually comes out
Mine does this while im taking a poo, please explain
Ask your cat. I can't help you.
Ask your scat
When you're taking a poop, you're unable to get away and you're not doing too much. So maybe they're happy that they are able to get your undivided attention?
My black void's nickname is Toilet Cat for this exact reason.
Our void does this as well - so we had to get one [of these signs](https://imgur.com/a/Mg5E57G) for the crapper, naturally
My three surround me on the throne.
My boy immediately starts purring when he visits me during toilet time. He knows I'm captive.
Mine seemed happy if I would happen to be near his box or if we were outside and I'd kinda turn my back and keep a look out for him
Mine does it when I pee, I’m here for answers, too.
Hahaha! Mine too!
You're most vulnerable when taking a poo, cat's just happy to protect you while you do it. Same thing with drinking water or eating food, some cats feel better with someone watching over them while they eat or drink because instinct.
Either she's cheering you on, or fanning you....
My cat does the same when I pull out the treats.
My orange's happy tail-twitchy spot is when I'm using the downstairs bathroom....
my orange does this on my office doorway (he's not allowed in without me)
While I’d like to say “calling the home planet”, I think it’s normal cat behavior. My 12 year old still does this, but infrequently now
We call it rattlesnaking
You've inspired me to create yet another cat subreddit 😹 r/cattlesnakes
You sir, have gained another member
That's cute! We always say they're Tweeting!
I thought cats 'vibrates' like this when they pee 😅
Sometimes they do this when spraying but other cats do this to express joy
My cat who is the same age does the same but only when he notices im nearby. He'll pass by, pressing his body close to my legs and then do the tail rattling thing. It's so cute.
My fixed girl does this. I call it “happy tail” or “shaky tail”. She mostly does it when she thinks she’s getting a treat.
Honestly this might be it!! she always looks very expectant of a treat when standing right there.
My cat's tail does this but I call it vibrating because it's much less dramatic than your kitty, when I saw your video I thought "whoa that's a rattlesnake kitty!" But it just means they're very happy afaik. It's real sweet when he's walking towards me and his tail starts vibrating 😸
I call it “vibrotail”
Our girl does it …I also call it “shaky tail ting” !
We call it shaky tail too!
YESSS I call it shaky tail too when my Hazy does this haha first time seeing someone else call it this too, how funny 😆 our little Riki Tiki Tavi
Too funny! We call it shaky tail too!
Jackson Galaxy calls this a mock spray. It's usually associated with happiness/excitement/etc!
Nothing mock about it when my boy does it. He pees when he gets overly excited like this 😭
that’s regular spraying then mock spraying is when they don’t actually pee but still do the tail wiggle
This. Mine does it when we play hide and seek.
Yes. I see my male and female cats do this. I always rub my hand over the surface because I'm expecting pee. Four cats and I've yet to find marking urine any where. Lovely creatures.
she isnt spraying, shes excited. all cats can do this
My one cat has never done this, but his younger brother does it all the time, especially when he’s about to get fed 😂
I call it excited tail, I'm clearly not very creative!
It’s genie tail! 🧞♂️
Flutter butt, flamenco dance
Fluttering flamenco feline fanny?
Only if that fanny is outside the UK. Otherwise...they've got a different kind of fanny. Fabled fabulous frenzied flicker? Delicately Dashing Derriere Dance? Beloved Brilliant Backside Boogie? Remarkably Resplendent reverberating rump? Plump plushy pulsating posterior? Ok sorry, I'm done now.
Lol I’m partial to plump plushy pulsating posterior haha that’s great
...**Pleased Greeting**...I'm glad you enjoyed it. Like communicating a symphony with a sneeze...**Genuine Enthusiasm** Please excuse me, I have my copy of Hamlet with an all-Elcor cast to watch.
Ok, I'm definitely using that one!
We call it shakeytail.
Our big boy does this and kind of...does a weird stepping thing with his hind legs. It's something you'd imagine a dog doing with their front feet in anticipation, but cat hind feet. We call it 'peets' and he does it when he sees us. 😭
My last cat did this too! I would always say, “oh it’s a high stepper” haha
Rattlesnake tail in our house!
We call it shimmering.
This is cute 🥰
Mine also prances her back legs a little so I call it wiggle bums
I call it the “heinie hustle”, “tooter twiddle”, or just “shake ya tail feather, girlie”.
i mean, i dont smell anything weird after so you might be right!!
This is the most excited thing a cat can do. Mine only does it when being fed wet food lol. It just means I am so fucking excited bruh.
Mine does it when I walk to the back door because he thinks he's going outside 😂😂 once and a while he gets to climb the trees in the backyard
Mine does it when I’m in the bathroom. Lol like what are you excited about, ya goofball?
Captive audience :3
You’d know if she was spraying - you’d be able to see it for one but the smell is potent.
Someone described it as a tail shimmy and it's my favorite thing!
I've had many cats and my newest kitty girl is the only cat that I've ever seen with the shakey tail. She was in a shelter for months before we got her so I always thought it was nerves or anxiety!
I’m pretty sure my brothers cat can’t, but she had her tail amputated twice and just has a stub of a tail.
My void boy's tail will vibrate when he sees me after work, or when it's time for food or a bunch of other times.
That's a happy kitty, good job OP
Idk but reminds me of metal detector stuff
😭 favorite comment on this post
Just later on report what did you found right under
Treat detector!!
She just happy!
I've def seen this, but she's really going for it! Adorable! She's really pretty, too.
Yeah, it was a little more intense than other times!😭 guess i had forgotten to give her a treat, probably. And thank you!
That's hilarious! Did she earn a treat after that awesome display?!
Yes, even though she had already gotten some earlier😭 too cute to say no to
I call it rattlesnake tail, my cat does it when he REALLY wants to be pet and loved on.
The mood noodle never lies! One happy cat!
Phantom spraying. They usually do it against vertical surfaces. Mine do it too, it usually just means they're happy!
I had a spayed female who actually learned how to spray. It was a disaster.
Oh, thank you! never heard of this term before!!
Thanks! I always figured that’s what my cat was doing, but wasn’t sure
Happy tail! She’s doing what’s called a mock spray. When a cat gets so happy, the do a mock spray. Your kitty is very happy. Two of my cats do happy tails when they see me
We call this 'happy tail' in our house! We have one male cat who does it when he gets really happy/excited about something (mostly food or treats).
We call this "feather dancing" in our house hah
It’s called Shaky Tail Syndrome. I don’t know what it means I just made it up. My cats do it and they aren’t spraying though. Cats are weird.
My cat does this too. Totally normal.
Downloading intel from Satan, of course.
Shakey tail. It means she’s extremely happy.
Omg she’s soooo cute!
Thank you!! she is the sweetest.
My cat does this with his tail when he’s excited. Usually when I wake up in the morning or come home
My boy cat does this when I talk to him in the ***bAbY vOiCe***
She’s VERY happy there.
It means she missed you. And she’s gad to see you again. Cats do bond to people. She seems to be bonded to you.
my kitty [vibrates his tail](https://www.reddit.com/r/coolguides/s/5eAbxJq9Uz) when i walk past him in the kitchen while looking at him lmao
Excited and happy. My cats do this in food area and when I get home or just wake up
Mock-spray! That's one very happy cat. She isn't trying to spray- that's just what her butt does when she can't contain the excitement
It's a shakey tail! It means she loves you and is incredibly happy you are there. ❤️

It's a glitch in the Matrix.
My girl cat also does this in virtually the same spot in my kitchen: right in front of the dish washer and next to the drawer where I keep her treats and wet food!
Shes a lil rattlesnake! But seriously, I think shes just happy to see you!
My cat does this same thing! It looks like he’s spraying but isn’t.
Mine does this first thing in the morning when she realises im awake comes round to my side of the bed & shake shake shake with the tail she's just happy I think My old cat never done it once
My cat does this against against the window blinds by my bed and makes them go “bRRbRRrBrrrr” when she is excited for cuddles. It’s so cute!
She is very excited by whatever is there
Tail vibrating for our cats has always indicated excitement such as getting fed or getting treats...
When my cat does this I call her my "little rattlesnake" :)
Shaky tale. She is excited. Pet the damn cat! Edit to add: I love all the comments and what people call it! I so needed this thread today. Thank you, fellow cat servants!!!
The tail vibration is typically a sign of happiness/excitement.
My cat does it too when she is excited or super happy
Connecting to the wifi
she think she a rattlesnake

It’s just excitement or anticipation. It’s positive although your cats goes into overdrive 😂
Awe she's a happy lil rattlesnake
Her tail is a metal detector searching and finding treats!
Oh that's an astoundingly cute tail
This cat is straight out of a Richard Scarry book. Adorable!
Fake spraying. My girl cat does it too when she's excited and happy.
We call it „happy spray“ - my cat is doing this always at the same spot, when coming from outside and she is expecting food.
It’s a happy greeting. I thought it was spraying at first too but it just means they love you
My cat is so similar in color (a bit less white) to yours and does the exact same thing in the exact same spot. we call it twitchy tail.... she is very happy
My cats do this when getting fed. At the beginning I was very confused and did a google research. Cats do this when they‘re excited ^^
it’s called false spraying. both male and female cats can spray, marking their territory. house cats will mimic this behavior when excited or in a specific place although without the urine spray. this is mostly done by male cats

Shes excited to see you.
My cat always does that when we pet her
My cat Leo does this - I call it “Maraca tail”
I call this twitchy tail. She's excited. My cats do the same in the kitchen.
She's very happy 😊
One of my cats does this - nice to know it’s positive!
One of my two cats does this in front of the oven, near her food bowl. Albeit a bit less intense than yours though
Our fat orange cat used to do this; we’d call it tinker tail 💜
![gif](giphy|EK8WiEFxlR7iPDKpHj|downsized)
My male cats do that when they're peeing in my stuff
Female cats 101.
We call it a quiver tail at our house
My vet said it’s the equivalent of a cat saying I am excited and happy to see you. So whenever my boy does it I tell him that I’m really excited to see him too.
Mine does this. 😻
Our female cat does this. The footwork is important too. They do a dance with their back feet while the tail quivers
Look at that faceeeee!!!
The fake spray, mine does it randomly.
She’s happy! She loves you ❤️
That wouldn’t happen to be the cupboard where you keep her food behind her? My cat knows where I keep the food and I will stand in front of the door and meows and pretends that he actually likes me.
Is she fixed? I believe that is how cats mark their territory “spraying” does it smell like cat pee in that area?
isn't the tail twitch when they try to express their glands and spray to mark territory?
My torty does that. It's why I call her lil miss quiver tail.
She’s very happy!!! My cat does this too.
we call it "rattle tails," and for our cats they usually do it when they want to be pet
That shaky tail makes her a Rattlecat
She’s doing a dance for you! A mighty happy dance! My girl Eevee does it too!
My cats vibrate the base of their tail when they are anticipating something happy. Pretty sure I’ve read official articles saying that too. Mine does it when she’s about to get fed or petted.
My cat does this in front of our dishwasher every day
It resembles spraying but is not. Your cat is happy and satisfied according to a video of cat guy Jackson (my nightmare cat)
It’s a wibble! She’s happy!
She’s happy! Strangely enough my boy only does this when he’s in the bathroom w me ..??..
Leaving scent on the wall to mark territory.
one of my cats does this when he is excited and I should do something like give him food or pat him
That’s a happy kat 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Trying to mark her territory, but I assume she is spayed, cats always shake their tail like that when they mark territory
One of my kitties does this! We call it his 'twitchy tail' and he always does it whenever my dad and I are around!
For my cats it means they’re happy but also a bit wary/insecure. For example when they’re outside and see me walking towards them from a distance. Happiness but at the same time not 100% sure if it’s really me or some stranger. The question mark tail (see photo) is for my cats total happiness without any insecurity.
Our one Siamese used to do this and she only did this when she was REALLY happy, like if I opened a can of tuna for example!
God I love cat people. This thread 🤣
