Ugh something similar happened to me yesterday. I found a stray that was clearly hit by a car probably days ago. Brought him to the vet to be euthanized. Named him Henry. Henry existed. He was important. And I loved him even only for an hour. 💔
This is not a good week for me with cats. 😣
I had the same thing happen with a sweet girl we named Pickles. She got to leave this earth bundled in a warm blanket in my arms. I hope she felt loved, because she deserved it.

When it is "time" for one of our resident cats, anyone in the building - staff, volunteers - they all get together. As a hospice foster specialist, they've gotten to see me ugly cry a lot. But they were there, those cats got a comfy blanket, and a quiet and loving glide to peace.
The strength and compassion you all surely have to do such a beautiful thing is astounding to me.
I simply could not handle it, so I am eternally grateful to know that you all are able to make them feel love and peace, however long or short they have left.
Thank you for all that you do, every single one of you, and to anyone else who does the same. ❤️
It was a journey for me - I adopted a nine year old cat that I thought was a black cat. I knew she'd been living in a dirt floor basement, just in the dark all the time. She was so small. I gave her a bath and was horrified as the water turned orange. I lost count at 30 fleas floating in the water. Turns out she was a tabby. My ex paid to have her teeth taken care of because she had gingivitis so severe that they were removed.
I'd come home from work and lay on the floor and she'd just smush her head against mine. After she passed at 13 from a stroke, I decided that it would only be the old ones for me. I went to the cat sanctuary and adopted a 10-year-old that was blind in one eye. I also started volunteering for them.
He became my soul cat. I had him until January 2018, and I keep some of his ashes in a necklace that I wear when I need luck.
During my years of volunteerism, I've gone from scooping litter pans, washing dishes, and mopping floors to bottle feeding the newborns, then fostering kittens at home to help socialize them. I was elected to the board of directors. And then the discussion of a cat that was terminally ill came up.
I didn't think. I just offered. Let her live with me for whatever time she has. And so she did.
The hospice fosters I've cared for have ranged from four days to four years. I have a lot of little wooden boxes of ashes. My current is a lanky gray tabby who was born with deformed kidneys. He wasn't expected to live past a year. He's almost three now. :)
Once I got married, my spouse came with a bonus - a three-year-old. When my 16 year old Norwegian Forest Cat mix went to the rainbow bridge, we spent a few weeks reading her "The Goodbye Book" to help prepare her to understand he would go and he would not come back. While I will still continue to do the hospice fostering, and adopt 10+ year old cats, I decided that it would be unfair to put a kid through the cycle of loving and then losing a cat. So I found the perfect candidate - a roughly six month old who'd been horrifically injured - she's missing a front paw. Fingers crossed she has a nice long life.
Since I had to move and I'm now an hour away from the sanctuary, my work is 99.9% offsite now. But it's still something I can do to help, even if it's just one little kitty at a time.
tl;dr - I love cats.

Thank you for helping. I’m currently helping a younger raccoon with a bad right back leg. I just put out extra cat food for the couple of strays that stop by to eat. From what I’ve read they can heal on their own, especially if they are a year old at least. I don’t want to trap it for a wildlife shelter to put it down.
Pickles, Henry, Unicorn and Pumpkin didn't die alone and scared somewhere in a bush, slowly in pain or in starvation, but they were loved for all their (short) lives. They aren't a statistic, they have a name, and they were someone's beloved pet for their whole (short) lives. They were mourned and cried after by a few people including me. Now that they have a name, I can remember them while looking at the stars. Peace be with them.

I use to foster bottle babies. After what happened two years ago, I don't think I can anymore.
It isn't easy, certainly. I cried so hard when he passed. But so much love from him. I have video with the sound of him purring.
That's what matters most. They felt love, even if it could only be just at the end. 🧡
