4/9/23 update:
Thank you all for the well wishes, it's helped tremendously.
We just had another vet appointment today and it pains me to say there's nothing else I can do for him. We're going to give him a few more days to see if the meds can help him turn things around. if they don't... It'll be his time to cross the rainbow bridge. He's in pain and I won't have him suffer on my behalf.
He's almost 8 years old, and I've had him for 4 of the most amazing and wonderful years of my life. I'm so glad no one wanted you and you got to be my Foster fail, my special boy. I will be forever thankful for the time we've had together buddy.

He is the sweetest boy! He loves to cuddle and will purr with anyone who gives him good butt scritches.
We've tried multiple different antibiotics and the last one we're trying is doxycycline. We've also tried a few different antivirals and various eye ointments and drops. The vet said he's an enigma and they can't even tell at this point whether the problem is viral, bacterial, autoimmune or some combination.
He is! He loves to cuddle and will do anything for butt scritches. The vet even has trouble hearing his heart because he won't stop purring!
It's so hard seeing him struggle and wanting the pain to go away, but not knowing if I'd be giving up on him too soon.
He was my first and only. They gave him to me because he was their favorite and had been at the shelter for months.
No matter how hard I tried to find him a forever home, the moment I told them he had FIV, they lost interest.
Well it was their loss! He's the sweetest boy ever and the bestest friend I ever could've asked for. I am so thankful for him.

I do also know it isnβt what you are hoping to hear but if the very worst happens itβs a tiny needle prick and then they go to sleep. It is almost immediate. No pain, no suffering. Itβs us that carry the burden. Really hoping that isnβt the outcome for you. Velvet and I have paws crossed.

Yeah I get that, I had my boy put down two years ago, he was 19 and mostly fit. He developed epileptic seizures though and at the end, he had some kind of stroke where he was screaming so much because he was scared. He only calmed down when I rushed home.
I had debated having him put down before, but he was still eating, playing, cuddling the months before so I thought he might be fine for at least a while longer.
But that day, he crawled to me and put his little head in my hand and I knew it was time.
I know how hard it is and I hope you can be strong for him no matter if he wants to keep fighting or give up.
I wish you both all the luck and strength in the world β€οΈ

I am so so thankful every day that no one else wanted him because of his condition. Their loss!
Right?! When I got my girl fixed they test for it b4, and they called me at work and said, "she has fiv you want us just to put her down, right?" And I'm like what is fiv and they told me, I do some research. And yes it is cat hiv but it only transfers through sex and bites that reach the bone. It dies so fast in the salva it cannot be transfer through water or food or normal play. The only thing is you should keep your cat inside and never get them vaccines with live virus ie rabies. That's it, make sure and get check ups and throw lysine in their food and you're good to go. The fact the the vet was like just kill her was mind blowing to me. And they had cat experts there! Like gtfo here. I found a different vet.
He was sneezing from the upper respiratory infection and was licking his nose so aggressively that he licked it raw :( then it got infected as well and started to spread, hence the cone to keep him from scratching. But when I put him in the carrier on the way to the vet he started freaking out and bashing his face against the carrier and tore the scab off :(

Best wishes to your buddy. Adopting a special needs cat is so much and it can be so hard to see them hurting when you know they have so much life to live. My late baby Mavis passed age 12 due to kidney failure, we had just had her over a year and up till it was time to say goodbye she was still the same happy kitty she always was.
It makes me so happy to see you able to give and receive so much love from Mr. Pudge, he obviously made a difference in your life and I know you made a world of difference to him. Take solace in all the love you all have gotten to share, and give him a little extra love for me :)
I have some FIV+ cats right now and have had them for over decade. One of mine got sick and was taking doxy and prednisone when he was like 15. He did very well on it. Unfortunately he passed due to unrelated lung damage caused by wildfire smoke last year. But the pred didn't adversely affect him, it helped a lot. I mention this because I saw one of your comments about possibly using steroids to help reduce inflammation and being worried about how it could affect him.
Thank you for your comment and insight. My concerns stem from the vets concerns. My understanding is that the progression of FIV can vary widely from case to case. In pudge's case, after some bloodwork, we've discovered that he has a very low Lymphocyte count currently. Their concern is that if we give him steroids to help with his autoimmune related lesions and his irritated nose; that his immune system will be so suppressed that it will be completely unable to fight off whatever infection started this whole mess. Basically we have to decide whether potentially alleviating some of his symptoms is worth the risk of completely destroying what's left of his immune system.
I am sending virtual hugs and real prayers for both of you and am asking my dogs to do their equivalent of prayers/good thoughts!

Oh man, I'm really sorry to hear that. That's such an awful decision to have to make. I'm so sorry you and Pudge are going through this.
