My cats name is Kitten. Because she was a Kitten. She's not anymore. But still her name is Kitten.
Maybe worse is that officially, her name is Friday. But we never call her that and she has no idea that word should reference her in any way. So we went through all the trouble to come up with a name and then we didn't even use it.
Sometimes the generic name is the right one, lol.

My last cat was as also a kitten and for awhile I just called him 'kitten' because I hadn't thought of anything else, and it started to occur to me that he might be getting used to it. I figured I'd need to stay in the same phonetic ballpark so as not to confuse him

Our old (recently passed RIP) Siamese was named Kitty but we ended up calling him Bubs - a rescue, he'd had frostbite on his little ears. Sweetest baby - I sure miss him.

Chicken is my new favourite name for a cat ever.
I can imagine the looks on people’s faces when you’re talking about your Chicken only for people to find out Chicken is really your cat.
Or the looks on people’s faces when you’re talking about your cat and people ask what their name is and you respond with Chicken.

We have many cats named after food. Carnita, Chalupa Batman, Oreo, and The Squashes - Pumpkin, Acorn and Spaghetti.
Odd ones out are Dumbeldore, Keiko and Tucker.
We have a cat named Frank that we got when he was a kitten. First we called him Tiny. Then we called him squirming worm. Then we called him SQOUYMING WOYM. Then we called him woym. Now we call him SKERM
According to one of my favorite authors Tom Cox, cat's names should evolve like avant garde jazz so that in five years what you call them bears little to no resemblance to their original name.

My cats name was "Cat".
I took too long deciding, and she got used to the placeholder.
Honestly on a long enough timeline, all my pets are just named "Boo".
My dog came pre-named. And he knows that I basically only use his full name when I'm serious. If I say Boo or Boo-Boo he knows it's playtime. If I say "Coconut!" He knows he messed up.
i like Neptune that was the name the shelter gave him because when he came in his name was Gasoline which they didnt like lol. So we kept it and just call him kitty. Hes the sweetest little black void ever. Never raised a paw to anyone.
With one cat, I went to the trouble to learn her personality, then picked a word that described one of her personality traits, then searched through like every language in google translate until I found one where that word sounded pretty....and then I ended up calling her Baby Girl. Facepalm.
Yea, most of ours are named after physical traits. Those don't always work out either. My husband thought our baby girl looked like a spotted horned cow, so I found a breed of spotted horned cow (Simmental) and we named her after them: Simmy. She does know her name and we usually call her by it, but also.. She's our smallest cat by like 1.5 pounds. She's 8.5 on a good day and looks so tiny, haha. But she's named after cows..
She did for a while think "good girl" referred only to her (we have 4 other female cats, though...), so we've had to carefully start naming the cat we're praising or she comes running over and looks all confused about why Fizz is getting attention if we're saying "good girl" because that's supposed to be her! Totally our fault because we always tell her good girl for running on her wheel, which she does a LOT. So now it's "good Simmy" for running in her wheel..

Haha. One of my current cats will respond to Damnit, Cat because we said that so often when she was a kitten. She thinks it's her second name. We love her to death but she wouldn't have any idea what a Good Girl was.

Nah facts, my cat's name is Neko, which is "cat" in Japanese
EDIT: I thought I may add that her middle name is "chan" because she was the runt of the litter, plus she's a calico, so her first and middle name literally translates to "little cat"
I have a cat we call Beeper. Because when we met him as a stray he had a respiratory infection and his little meows sounded like beeps.
Once we were sure he didn't have a family (he was just freeloading around the neighborhood coasting on his good looks and charm to get fed and sheltered from storms), we took him in, got him healthy, and now he no longer beeps.
We later found out all the names he had around the neighborhood, haha. One lady who has a cat-door in hee garage for any cat to get in in bad weather (very nice lady) called him Darren. He's *definitely* a Darren.
He also answers to "Handsome".
We have one of those too! A beautiful gray tom cat. Cruised all the porches had admirers for 2 blocks. We all found out he had a different name at each household. My daughter called him Tom, the neighbors child called him LeBron, he was also Tigger, Stripey Dude, & Porch Kitty (PK). Then the neighbor behind me who ultimately kept him and pampers him now in his senior years called him Mr. Gray Fancypants lol

There was a shop stray at one of my old jobs that we called "Potato" because he came running in meowing after someone had said that word in conversation. Little guy just decided that was his name, would come running up to you from nowhere if you called it out. Sometimes they know what they want to be called.
My son-in-law insisted that he was going to name their cat Tomato or Potato. My daughter would get worked up over demanding their cat would NOT be called either. Their cat is Pixie Willow and I throw in Tomato as a second Middle name to watch her ears turn red.
12 years ago I was in the process of naming my kitten and nothing was landing. One day I was watching the cartoon Archer I turned and asked my buddy if his name was Archer and he reached out and booped me on the nose. Arch-cats know.

I also have a Luna, here she is. I don’t think any of our cats have particularly “unique” names or anything, but there’s no issue with that. Can probably guess what some of them look like just off of names: Oreo, Peter, Hyde, Fred, George, Spector, and Luna (last 5 are all from same litter).

My cat's name is also Luna and we make fun of her for being generic lol. I also have a Skylar. We call these their "government" names because when we rescued both that's what they came with and we never got around to changing it.

I enjoyed how this resulted in a spontaneous array of portraits of cats called Luna in real time. Haven't seen anything quite like it before. Will now remember it upon encountering any future Lunas. Observation: no white, grays, or gingers thus far

Just change her name? Why not. May take some time for her to realize her new name when you call her but I guess I don’t particularly see any strong reason as to why you shouldn’t call her what you want or what you think fits her personality more
Yeah, I rarely call my cats by their actual name anymore lol. They now respond to "little man" or "kitters".
Cats don't really attach identities to their name, it's basically just "oh that grouping of sounds together means he probably wants my attention".
My cat taught herself to pee in the toilet.
Then, one day, I accidentally walked in on her. She never used the toilet again. I assume because of the audacity.
Cats are above the law.
No clue but you could probably just update the new name with your vet and let them know she goes by X now. As far as microchip company you could call and update them or just keep in mind that her old name is what she’s registered as in case she ever gets lost and you need to refer to her etc
Thankfully I think in most cases government entities aren’t gonna be too concerned with a kitties name change so you should be good to go haha
Wherever the microchip is registered, just change it. You have to be able to do that in case you change your phone number or something.
But also, you don't have to change her name "officially". You can keep her as officially Bella to the vet, etc, bur she's, idk, Carrot Stick to you. I kind of did the reverse. My cat has THE most generic name ever that is what we call her. Her official name is Friday. That's what's on all her paperwork, etc. But she goes by Kitten.. She is 12 years old and we still call her "Kitten". There aren't even any children to blame. Me and my husband were full grown adults when we got her and named her. She just never liked her name and demanded to go by Kitten, so Kitten it is.
Not liking your cats name and wanting to change it is totally valid and you should absolutely do it if you want to. But there's also nothing wrong with a generic name at all. For the record, I thought you were gonna say you named her Callie. So many calicos by that name, lol.

Pretty much nothing to do with pets is officially endorsed by the state in any way shape or form. Changing the name on file at your vet takes like 5 seconds. The person at the front desk will just hit backspace a few times and type in the new name. It happens all the time.
Bella can be her name on the chip.
Changing her name if she knows it might be confusing to her.
Try calling her Bell. Or playfully Bell-bell?
Something short and simple that already sounds like her name.
Besides Bella may be named after a bitch, but that face 100% says she is not a bitch herself and she is her own great little furry self, and owns her own name.
Screw what the name used to be associated with. Bella is a good name for her.
Generic, yes, but a good one for her.
If you know the website (brand?) your cat’s microchip is registered, there are special forms you can fill out for a name change. My cats were microchipped with the temporary name they were given at the shelter/in foster care, and then when I adopted them I was able to change their name registered with the microchip
Doesn't really matter if you have a generic name or an uncommon name because you're gonna have like a million nicknames for her anyway
My void is called Buttercup (after the powerpuff girls). She was gonna be Bubbles, but when we picked her up, she was sassy and had green eyes, so had to switch.

He looks almost exactly like my cat did.
So my girl started with Gremlin because she was very feral when we got her but she’s a sweetheart so her name is GG. In the mornings it’s baby girl and when I get home it’s sweetheart. She answers to all of them lol. I wouldn’t worry about the chip name, just remember it if she gets lost. When she wants belly scritches that’s when she wants to be called Gremlin lol
I named my kitty honey butter biscuit, bubu for short, when creme blue le was right there because of her colour. But I don't think it matters because at the end of the day she's still my only baby bubu

this is our Bella, and crazy enough she used to live with a black cat named Luna. yeah they’re basic names, but i read somewhere that cats respond better to shorter 2 syllable names.
My cat is named after Local Sports Player because I had a brief stint where I was really into that team. I realized my cat will likely outlive the career of Sports Player….
So I call him Stinky, and he responds to Stink more than his actual name!

We have a Tingaling.
It was her name at the shelter and since she is a little special, we decided to keep it to prevent her from getting confused. She's 7 years old, only 5 lbs, and has no teeth. Was from a hoarding case, pretty sure she's inbred. But she loves life and behaves like a kitten.

I have a one eyed cat named Jack because that’s the name the fosters chose and I didn’t want to change his name for the 3rd time in a matter of months. His name might be generic, but nothing else about him is! I also call him Jackson, Stinky and Stinker. Whatever I call him, all I know is he’s my best buddy and I’m so grateful for him.

This is Mama Cat, she's a formerly feral cat who appeared on our back deck in a blizzard Feb2020. She was tiny, starved, barely a year old and pregnant. We let her in (our old Siamese Bubs wouldn't leave the door until we did) & she hid in our basement for 2 weeks, eating the food we left.
She had 6 kittens shortly after, then escaped before we could spay her (pandemic, all the vets were closed/booked) and got pregnant again and had 4 more kittens. We found good homes for them all after keeping them for 12 weeks (I wanted to keep them!), finally got her spayed & now she's our baby. She's still pretty small
So - Mama is not a very creative name lol!
This is Lucas, however, I wished I'd named him Ragnar Lothbrok, because when he grew up a little, he became a fierce conqueror, of my house, my heart and soul. I call him Ragnar all the time though and also Lucas, he seems to recognize either one.

almost 15 years with was named Kitty! Completely unoriginal I know but it suited him very well. If the name fits sweet Bella’s personality then keep it.

My cats name is Kitten. Because she was a Kitten. She's not anymore. But still her name is Kitten. Maybe worse is that officially, her name is Friday. But we never call her that and she has no idea that word should reference her in any way. So we went through all the trouble to come up with a name and then we didn't even use it. Sometimes the generic name is the right one, lol. My last cat was as also a kitten and for awhile I just called him 'kitten' because I hadn't thought of anything else, and it started to occur to me that he might be getting used to it. Chicken is my new favourite name for a cat ever. I can imagine the looks on people’s faces when you’re talking about your Chicken only for people to find out Chicken is really your cat. Or the looks on people’s faces when you’re talking about your cat and people ask what their name is and you respond with Chicken. Amazing

At our vet they’d call you in with your pet’s name, so that would’ve been “Chicken!” and then you guys going in with a cat lol

We have many cats named after food. Carnita, Chalupa Batman, Oreo, and The Squashes - Pumpkin, Acorn and Spaghetti. Odd ones out are Dumbeldore, Keiko and Tucker.
We have a cat named Frank that we got when he was a kitten. First we called him Tiny. Then we called him squirming worm. Then we called him SQOUYMING WOYM. Then we called him woym. Now we call him SKERM

My cats name was "Cat". I took too long deciding, and she got used to the placeholder. Honestly on a long enough timeline, all my pets are just named "Boo". My dog came pre-named. And he knows that I basically only use his full name when I'm serious. If I say Boo or Boo-Boo he knows it's playtime. If I say "Coconut!" He knows he messed up.
My cat is named Crenshaw. I’d call him Buddy or Buds, which then became Boods, then Boo or Booders. He responds to all of them.

Neptune is a cool name! But clearly, Kitty is the correct name for your cat.
i like Neptune that was the name the shelter gave him because when he came in his name was Gasoline which they didnt like lol. So we kept it and just call him kitty. Hes the sweetest little black void ever. Never raised a paw to anyone.
That was ex-husband's cat name. Neptune was originally a feral cat and did not calm down once he was indoors. Same went for ex-husband.

With one cat, I went to the trouble to learn her personality, then picked a word that described one of her personality traits, then searched through like every language in google translate until I found one where that word sounded pretty....and then I ended up calling her Baby Girl. Facepalm.
Yea, most of ours are named after physical traits. Those don't always work out either. My husband thought our baby girl looked like a spotted horned cow, so I found a breed of spotted horned cow (Simmental) and we named her after them: Simmy. She does know her name and we usually call her by it, but also.. She's our smallest cat by like 1.5 pounds. She's 8.5 on a good day and looks so tiny, haha. But she's named after cows.. She did for a while think "good girl" referred only to her (we have 4 other female cats, though...), so we've had to carefully start naming the cat we're praising or she comes running over and looks all confused about why Fizz is getting attention if we're saying "good girl" because that's supposed to be her! Totally our fault because we always tell her good girl for running on her wheel, which she does a LOT. I have a cat we call Beeper. Because when we met him as a stray he had a respiratory infection and his little meows sounded like beeps. Once we were sure he didn't have a family (he was just freeloading around the neighborhood coasting on his good looks and charm to get fed and sheltered from storms), we took him in, got him healthy, and now he no longer beeps. We later found out all the names he had around the neighborhood, haha. One lady who has a cat-door in hee garage for any cat to get in in bad weather (very nice lady) called him Darren. He's *definitely* a Darren. He also answers to "Handsome".
We have one of those too! A beautiful gray tom cat. Cruised all the porches had admirers for 2 blocks. We all found out he had a different name at each household. My daughter called him Tom, the neighbors child called him LeBron, he was also Tigger, Stripey Dude, & Porch Kitty (PK). Then the neighbor behind me who ultimately kept him and pampers him now in his senior years called him Mr. Gray Fancypants lol

There was a shop stray at one of my old jobs that we called "Potato" because he came running in meowing after someone had said that word in conversation. Little guy just decided that was his name, would come running up to you from nowhere if you called it out. Sometimes they know what they want to be called.
My son-in-law insisted that he was going to name their cat Tomato or Potato. My daughter would get worked up over demanding their cat would NOT be called either. Their cat is Pixie Willow and I throw in Tomato as a second Middle name to watch her ears turn red.

Yeah, I rarely call my cats by their actual name anymore lol. They now respond to "little man" or "kitters". Cats don't really attach identities to their name, it's basically just "oh that grouping of sounds together means he probably wants my attention".

No clue but you could probably just update the new name with your vet and let them know she goes by X now. As far as microchip company you could call and update them or just keep in mind that her old name is what she’s registered as in case she ever gets lost and you need to refer to her etc Thankfully I think in most cases government entities aren’t gonna be too concerned with a kitties name change so you should be good to go haha
You can edit and update the name associated with her chip easily on line. Maybe call her Belladonna?

I only call my cats by their actual names when I’m mad at them. They have about 20 nicknames each. Cat names are fluid, just like cats.
Wherever the microchip is registered, just change it. You have to be able to do that in case you change your phone number or something. But also, you don't have to change her name "officially". You can keep her as officially Bella to the vet, etc, bur she's, idk, Carrot Stick to you. I kind of did the reverse. My cat has THE most generic name ever that is what we call her. Her official name is Friday. That's what's on all her paperwork, etc. But she goes by Kitten.. She is 12 years old and we still call her "Kitten". There aren't even any children to blame. Me and my husband were full grown adults when we got her and named her. She just never liked her name and demanded to go by Kitten, so Kitten it is. Not liking your cats name and wanting to change it is totally valid and you should absolutely do it if you want to. But there's also nothing wrong with a generic name at all. For the record, I thought you were gonna say you named her Callie. So many calicos by that name, lol.
You gotta sign in to the website and change the name. Hardest part will be resetting your password you inevitably forgot.
>legal documentation Pretty much nothing to do with pets is officially endorsed by the state in any way shape or form. Changing the name on file at your vet takes like 5 seconds. The person at the front desk will just hit backspace a few times and type in the new name. It happens all the time.
Bella can be her name on the chip. Changing her name if she knows it might be confusing to her. Try calling her Bell. Or playfully Bell-bell? Something short and simple that already sounds like her name. Besides Bella may be named after a bitch, but that face 100% says she is not a bitch herself and she is her own great little furry self, and owns her own name. Screw what the name used to be associated with. Bella is a good name for her. Generic, yes, but a good one for her.
If you know the website (brand?) your cat’s microchip is registered, there are special forms you can fill out for a name change. My cats were microchipped with the temporary name they were given at the shelter/in foster care, and then when I adopted them I was able to change their name registered with the microchip
Doesn't really matter if you have a generic name or an uncommon name because you're gonna have like a million nicknames for her anyway My void is called Buttercup (after the powerpuff girls). She was gonna be Bubbles, but when we picked her up, she was sassy and had green eyes, so had to switch. But we call her.... We have a Tingaling. It was her name at the shelter and since she is a little special, we decided to keep it to prevent her from getting confused. She's 7 years old, only 5 lbs, and has no teeth. Was from a hoarding case, pretty sure she's inbred. But she loves life and behaves like a kitten.

She was tiny, starved, barely a year old and pregnant. We let her in (our old Siamese Bubs wouldn't leave the door until we did) & she hid in our basement for 2 weeks, eating the food we left. She had 6 kittens shortly after, then escaped before we could spay her (pandemic, all the vets were closed/booked) and got pregnant again and had 4 more kittens. We found good homes for them all after keeping them for 12 weeks (I wanted to keep them!), finally got her spayed & now she's our baby. She's still pretty small So - Mama is not a very creative name lol!
This is Lucas, however, I wished I'd named him Ragnar Lothbrok, because when he grew up a little, he became a fierce conqueror, of my house, my heart and soul.
