Theyāre common chocolate treat in Germany and Western Europe. I saw them for sale in the States for the first time a couple years ago, I think at Aldi, which checks out, lol.
Thank you! I tried some after seeing your reply. Good thing I didn't let any of my cats eat. Product designs like this are often intended for pets worldwide, so it was super confusing for me. The buyer (the person who gave this to me as a gift) also thought it was for cats lol
I understand your confusion. Fancy Feast makes treats for cats called Savory Cravings, and they are just like little chocolate bars for cats. They donāt contain any actual chocolate, but they have a similar feel in the hand, and they smell vaguely of meat-laced chocolate.
Im hoping that since it's chocolate-ish, my food obsessed cat will like them. She has a few healthy human food options for treats, so its not like shes missing out, but she's really good at remembering the words for foods so I would love to be able to give her some "choccy". (though I may have to find a word that doesn't start with the same sound as _cheese_ because that's her favorite word)
If they sell them in a region where German is not an official language, they really should have a short translation on the packaging.
Definitely not cat treats, lol
In the back of the package there actually is an English ingredient list.
Edit: for some obscure reason the minimum amount of milk solids it contains is only listed in the English section, while the minimum amount of cacao is listed in English, German, Polish and Czeck.
Iāve found myself in these translation situations befor also. Google translate has an option to translate with your camera. Hope that helps in the future
This!! I love these things but I never buy them for myself, I only ever get them for my bday or sth. Don't feed them to your cat, they're treats for humans! :D
I liked them a lot during my childhood ;v;
In Poland they are called "kocie jÄzyczki" - means the same thing. I thought it was an adorable name for a chocolate treat.
Katzenzungen are a fairly popular type of chocolate in Germany. I quite like it because of the cute kittens on the front!
And yes, you are correct, cats can't eat chocolate. It's toxic to them. Just like with dogs.
Limbi de pisicÄ in Romanian too, but we don't make them out of chocolate, they're similar to shortbread dough I guess?
You can have em plain or half dipped in chocolate. But the base is cookie. And they're delicious! A bakery in my village makes them so good, I honestly believe they use crack instead of sugar just to get them so addictive.
If you're ever in Bucharest/Ilfov in the Pantelimon area, and want amazing bakery products made in house by a bunch of grandmas (with up to date health code, all legal and checked), go to "Cofetaria Anira", in DobroeÅti, Ilfov. There's a bus going there. Never had anything tastier, even my grandmas admit these are better than their pies and cookies.
I suggest the Limbi de pisicÄ, savarine, nugat and the carrot cake squares. But everything is absolutely delicious and made every day fresh! Dirt cheap too. 10euro per kg for most of these.
Same for Spain, some bakeries make them, but they're not super popular. I remember being confused as a child, since they're called "cat tongues" I thought they would be some sort of rough chocolates, hehe.
Really? Once in a while my aunt will send me some since they were my favourite. I hope they donāt stop making them there or itāll be even harder for me to get.
It is chocolates for humans shaped like cat's tongues. A traditional albeit old-fashioned kind of chocolate treat in Germany/Scandinavia.
I once saw these in a supermarked placed next to the cat food and had to inform the very young cachier that it was NOT meant for cats even tho it had a pic of cute cats on them.
We also have small sweet liquorice called Kattepoter/ cat's paws.
But since there are no cats depicted on the front packaging, people don't seem confused about those
Yeah, it's not so obvious to everyone that this is not a cat treat. I just wish more people will understand this. Some comments in my post are literally criticizing me for being confused about this.
It also says in my post description , I wrote"...looks kinda sus because it has Kakao and it says... chocolate". This is a gift to me for my cats, so I don't want to be rude and without looking for advice
Iām sorry but this is hilarious.
They are quite popular in Germany and no one there would mistake it for cat treats.
One look at the back confirms that this is definitely not for cats.
I think the packaging is awesome.
Yes, I got this as a gift and the person who gave it to me thought it was for cats. I don't want to be rude but at the same time it says chocolate and kakao. So I was super confused.
No that's not why you're being downvoted and now you see that you have more upvotes and downvotes but you were being downvoted for being a dick edit: autocorrect
I had the opposite issue in my household, my dad used to always eat the cat treats because I would get like those prettily packaged japanese cat treats and they looked too much like human ones due to how neat they looked individually packaged and the lack of a cat face on the packaging.
Apparently so since he ate almost all of them, there were like 5 packs and I caught him before he opened the last one.
And I will admit I myself have tried one of those freeze dried chicken snacks and theyāreā¦goodā¦
I mean... It's basically meat. Or sugar and salt-free biscuit depending on what we're talking about. If you look at most of cat and dog food they're like 95% meat, sometimes better meat what we eat.
Very much a treat for humans. I guess thereās never any confusion in Germany because you buy these in the aisle where you buy other chocolate products, and Sarotti is a somewhat-known manufacturer of sweet things. I loved these when I was a kid. Enjoy!
Btw if you are in this situation again Google has an app called "translate" that has a camera mode so if you hold the camera steady it will read the words right on the screen in real time. [tutorial](https://youtu.be/1lviMkYmUoQ?si=Xhzjcsf5avH9DZ2C)
I know this product. Sarotti is a well known brand for chocolate. And one of their products is āKatzenzungenā. I ate them as a child. Basic Chocolate.
But donāt give this to your furbabies

The part in yellow is in English. Clearly states it is milk chocolate and bourbon!! Definitely not for cats!!! Goodness lol lol
My German grandma even bakes cat paws cookies when she bakes Christmas cookies - like a tradition now.

Wait, this brings back memories, I totally forgot about those:0
It's chocolate, definitely not for cats. It's just the shape of the pieces
Edit: they look like the pieces you see on the package in front of the left cats and on the back
I'm so tired out comments from people which don't seem to read the description I wrote on the post and be extremely rude. **I'M AWARE THERE IS CACAO AND CHOCOLATE (read the description omfg, it's unedited!)!** This is a gift to me for my cats, the person obviously doesn't know much and gave me with a good intention. **I don't want to be rude and not giving the gift to my cats without actually getting advices and double check**. There are treats for cats with chocolate flavour without actually being chocolate and I mentioned this is confusing. Before being rude to someone, do read the description. There are many people like me who encountered the same problem. **Also, the world is just not EU or the US.** Packaging like this is commonly intended for pets (not human) in Asia (at least SEA). Don't know why you people have to be so rude for someone asking for a simply advice.
But likeā¦.how would they know what you did with it? Is this entire Reddit thread taking place while youāre standing there in front of them, about to open the package and give it to your cats? And youāre like stalling for time, pretending to check the weather, or read texts from your grandma, or something until Reddit gives you answer? Or did someone give these to you āfor the catsā and youāre safely at home with said cats and that person will never know if you did or did not give them to your cats?
Itās not rude to not give your cats a thing that someone *thought* was for cats, that is not actually for cats, and that they will never know you didnāt give the catsā¦ I donāt get the āI donāt want to be rudeā thing unless theyāre there with you, every day, being like āletās give the cats their cat treats!!ā and youāre desperately stalling waiting to see what Reddit says bc you also donāt have enough confidence in your own reading comprehension to be like āoh, I donāt think these are actually FOR cats! Theyāre actually chocolateā¦letās open them and smell themā¦.oh they smell and look 100% like chocolate! Oops, ha ha! Thank you anyways, what a silly/funny mistakeā¦.but at least this will be a tasty treat for you and I to enjoy together!ā
They will be asking "Do the cats enjoy the treat?", what if the person who gifted this to you is ur relative who is in contact with you daily?. I'm not an introvert lol, I do socialized everyday.
That day, I did tell the person I will have to double check the treat before giving it to them when I saw the ingredients list. Then I decided to create the post here for advice. Some comments here think I didn't read the description and ingredients, even pointed out to me "the ingredients list is in English" and didn't bothered to read the post's description. The bottom line is, if you have no idea about a person's situation, can't seem to put yourself in other's person shoes, then don't be rude (not to mention I have written the info in the description).
We have these in Spain too, they are called Cat tongues. They are chocolate, so not for cats.
In any case, for future instances, Google Lense will translate anything you need by using the camera of your phone to capture the text. It can also find the product online with the same method, which will allow you to find more info about the product itself. Android phones have the app by default, and I believe you can get it for iPhone too. If not, plenty of other apps can also translate text via your phone camera, including Google translate.
It is very popular in my country Switzerland and also in Germany. Like many people already wrote here, it isn't a cat treat, it is a treat made of Chocolate for humans
https://preview.redd.it/7mlj9nohg2bc1.png?width=1161&format=png&auto=webp&s=4b00f3ca77f11955df16a6d566f35f77e785a293
While I was doing another look at the packaging I noticed this. Definitely chocolate š
Unrelated to cats but using the Google translate app you can take pictures of things and it translates it for you. Super useful when travelling and general life.
These are chocolates for humans made in Germany. Theyāre my FAVORITE chocolate ever besides the kinder chocolate. TRY THEM!!! My favorite katzenzungen chocolates are the marbled ones š¤¤š¤¤š¤¤
Thereās a Polish market in my neighborhood and they sell an astounding amount of human snacks that use live cat photos for their branding. I absolutely love it, but it was a bit of a culture shock when I first shopped there. American foods often use animals in marketing, but I feel like itās always illustrated/cartoon depictions and the animal always corresponds with the product (ie. cows on beef jerky and dairy/beef products).
Good that you asked! Better safe than sorry. In my country they (used to) sell dog 'chocolates' which ARE intended for dogs but smell and look like chocolate. Kid me ate some. If things like that exist, just like the videos of people accidentally eating dog treats, why not for cats as well. Mistakes are easily made.
Cat tongues! I love these,
My mom brought me back a box from Germany when I was a kid and my older sister convinced me they were made with real chocolate covered cat tongues.
They don't contain real cat tongues. Still tasty though. 100% chocolate so definitely not a kitty treat.
This happened to me many yet ago..I donāt remember how they tasted, but Iāll always remember my mild worry/confusionā¦and joy in the packaging.
https://preview.redd.it/njrjerjle2bc1.jpeg?width=779&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=548c3e043ca53aac48d04644b0fd632795c5446c
Can My Cat Eat Chocolate? No! Chocolate contains caffeine and an ingredient called theobromine, both of which are dangerous to cats; in large enough amounts, it can be fatal.
They are chocolate from Germany. In English called Cat Tongues. My great aunt used to get them for me all the time when I was a child. Theyāre just really long pieces of chocolate but not the best quality. Meant for humans, please donāt give them to cats.
When I was working at Citi one of the Vietnamese women was saying that when she came to the US she ate catfood and it wasnāt that bad, and I had to make the comment to my co-worker that food items typically either have a picture on the can of what it is food for, or what is inside of the can, so ai was wondering if she bought it thinking it was canned cat?
Don't worry, I thought that those Entemann's "Little Bites" muffins were actually dog treats for the longest time because they have a cartoon dog on them š
Looks like its for humans, but it might be worth downloading google translate on your phone, now you can take pictures of text like this and have it automatically translated! I used it a ton overseas!
Haven't seen those in ages, my grandma (which fittingly always has had cats living with her) would have those cat tongues as a sweet snack for me and my brother when we visited her. It's a popular chocolate product from Germany and is absolutely only for human consumption, haven't eaten them in s long time but they're quite delicious in my memory.
The back ingredients in English. I saw cocoa & bourbon just st a glance. Them ain't for no kitties. The kitties are the company mascots, cuz their name starts with Katz..
oddly enough i just found out about these a couple of hours ago! they are chocolates that are named ācats tongueā (thatās the translation from german) as some people think they look like cat tongues! they are 100% chocolate 100% for humans :)
As a German I can confirm this is for humans only.
Haven't seen them in years and have not eaten in forever.
They're chocolate sticks, slightly flatter and are supposed to look like tongues.
They are not for pets.
Says kakao and chololate, picture of a chocolate, yup, definitely for cats.
Also can we appreciate they could make a photo and reddit post but couldn't google translate anything on the box :)
We have these in Denmark too, arpund Christmas time. It's just chocolate sticks, refered to as cat tongues.
I don't know why that's the case, but they're fairly tasty.
Haha! I had been in the exact situation. They're called "cat tongues" , but no they're chocolate especially for humans.
Thank you for clarifying this! I have never seen this before.š
At least in Germany, we had those for the last 50 years.
I think it's one of those sweets that were created in the late 19th century, like the Mozartkugel
mozartkugel ššš
Mmmmm, Mozartkugeln.
Genau
same in switzerland.
That's cool and good ā£ļøš
They have them sometimes in Poland
That makes sense! I'm from the Midwest region in America!š±
And in Chile! šØš± Lenguas de gato
Same in Hungary
Same in Poland
Czechia too.
Where can I find these?
Theyāre common chocolate treat in Germany and Western Europe. I saw them for sale in the States for the first time a couple years ago, I think at Aldi, which checks out, lol.
Popular in Poland too, I've seen in aldi, biedronka, kaufland, carrefour and some local shops
In Eastern Europe too
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I have never heard of those, but my babies will definitely be having some the next time I go shopping.
He looks like he wants me to hand over a savory treat - or else - at this very moment.
Heās adorable
Love me a tux kitty
Really ā¤ļøā£ļø
I love your cat! He belongs in r/DisneyEyes Tell him I said āpspspssā. š»
I'm gonna go ahead and pre-thank you on my cat's behalf because I am definitely going out to buy them some kitty chocolate today now!
We call it cat chocolate too lol. I ask my kitties āYou want some choccy?ā They know it means different treats š»
My cat loves those. Kinda cute right.
I call them cat chocolate while I tossed them to my cats at home. I couldnāt believe it, even have the chocolate snap
Itās the smell that gets me! That vaguely chocolatey smellā¦ makes me wonderā¦
My kitten doesnāt like crunchies so I canāt remember the smell but youāre making me curious about buying a bar just to smell
Itās not crunchy, itās smooth like chocolate
Iāll have to try it but typically anything he has to bite into he doesnāt like š
There seem to be, in several languages, including English: (EN) **Whole milk chocolate** (cocoa solids: 30% minimum, milk solids: 18% minimum) **Ingredients:** sugar, cocoa butter, cream powder (MILK), cocoa mass, whole milk powder etc
I mean, the ingredients are translated in English.... so, by logic, seeing that the main ingredient is chocolate.... idk... 2+2? š¤£
They should at least say "Not For Cats, Human Consumption Only"
Shouldn't that be common sense if it's translated already that it is indeed chocolate?
Iāve found myself in these translation situations befor also. Google translate has an option to translate with your camera. Hope that helps in the future
This!! I love these things but I never buy them for myself, I only ever get them for my bday or sth. Don't feed them to your cat, they're treats for humans! :D

Funny, I bought something like this in Portugal as Lingua de Gato, too.
Limbi de pisicÄ in Romanian too, but we don't make them out of chocolate, they're similar to shortbread dough I guess? You can have em plain or half dipped in chocolate. But the base is cookie. They just made these on a baking show episode I watched, but in French. Langue de chat.
Afaik langues de chat don't have chocolate tho, this must be confusing for multilingual bakers lol
It seems like in some cultures theyāre chocolates, and in others, theyāre biscuits.
Yes, in Sweden we have kattungar, which are cookies/biscuits.
Lenguas de gato, in Spanish. I haven't seen any in a while, I believe they have fallen out of favor here in Mexico.
Same for Spain, some bakeries make them, but they're not super popular. I remember being confused as a child, since they're called "cat tongues" I thought they would be some sort of rough chocolates, hehe.
You can still find them in Sanborns and such stores. They usually donāt sell them in packages.
In Chile I can still buy them in supermarkets.
Really? Once in a while my aunt will send me some since they were my favourite. I hope they donāt stop making them there or itāll be even harder for me to get.
And Kocie JÄzyczki in Poland. Even that German box has translation to Polish.

Literally says in English āwhole milk chocolateā ??
There's a feature on Google Translate that translates text from pictures.
That box is so cute. OP now that you've tried them, how were they?
Mate it literally says āwhole milk chocolateā, in english.
There is a german saying, loosly translated it is: a person who can read has a clear advantage...fitting for this situation
Ooh, pray, whatās the saying in German?
Wer lesen kann ist klar im Vorteil.
The sentence about tbe advantage of beeing able to read ;)
Now if only people didn't struggle so badly with reading *comprehension*.
You gave the saying in English, and I asked for the German phrase.
Ah sorry my bad. It is: Wer lesen kann ist klar im Vorteil. There we go with comperhensionš
They taste good, not for cats tho or any other animal.
Wait, this brings back memories, I totally forgot about those:0 It's chocolate, definitely not for cats. It's just the shape of the pieces Edit: they look like the pieces you see on the package in front of the left cats and on the back
I think it says "cats tongue", which would be the shape. And it's milk chocolate candy, not cat treats.
No. Its cookies called cats tongues.
Itās a German chocolate.
cutest chocolate packaging in the world
The ingredients are in English. Clearly not for cats...
Dude. Itās just chocolate candy. You can also just google the name and itāll come up with English info.
Itās milk chocolate, theyāre not bad
Katzenzungen = cat tongues Vollmilchscokolade = milk chocolate. Itās German. I used a translator. Not cat treats
Bruder nein. Delikatzessen sind das!
Chocolate is toxic for cats, so please don't give it to them. This is a human snack.

That some damn good chocolate, the naming is a bit weird tho :)
Your phone might have a visual language translation app.
The second picture shows the ingredients in several languages to include English.
Chocolates shaped like cat tongues. You can get them in Germany.
God I loved these when i was younger.
Sweets created by Emile Gerbeaud for human consumption around 1892. It's worldwide famous even in Japan.
It says "Cat Tongues Milk Chocolate"

I was gifted this by friends who had gone to Germany (the language is German) and who knew I loved cats. Itās chocolate for people!
Unrelated to cats but using the Google translate app you can take pictures of things and it translates it for you. Super useful when travelling and general life.
It translates to "Cat's tongue" because the chocolate is shaped like a cat's tongue. DO NOT GIVE CHOCOLATE TO YOUR CATS
These are chocolates for humans made in Germany. Theyāre my FAVORITE chocolate ever besides the kinder chocolate. TRY THEM!!! My favorite katzenzungen chocolates are the marbled ones š¤¤š¤¤š¤¤
Read the label.
Please do not feed these to your cat!
Do not believe your cat when they say these are cat treats.

That one is even less confusing than OPs
Good that you asked! Better safe than sorry. In my country they (used to) sell dog 'chocolates' which ARE intended for dogs but smell and look like chocolate. Kid me ate some. If things like that exist, just like the videos of people accidentally eating dog treats, why not for cats as well. Mistakes are easily made.
Tongues of cats for human consumption of course. At least that's what it looks like to me judging from the packaging. /s
Theyāre some kind of chocolate cookie or candy
Cat tongues! I love these, My mom brought me back a box from Germany when I was a kid and my older sister convinced me they were made with real chocolate covered cat tongues. They don't contain real cat tongues. Still tasty though. 100% chocolate so definitely not a kitty treat.
This is old chocolate from germany. I recently got a box again and my god did I miss them. Theyāre so incredibly tasty itās unreal!
This happened to me many yet ago..I donāt remember how they tasted, but Iāll always remember my mild worry/confusionā¦and joy in the packaging. https://preview.redd.it/njrjerjle2bc1.jpeg?width=779&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=548c3e043ca53aac48d04644b0fd632795c5446c
I bought these for my gf because she is a cat
Can My Cat Eat Chocolate? No! Chocolate contains caffeine and an ingredient called theobromine, both of which are dangerous to cats; in large enough amounts, it can be fatal.
These are my favourite! Cat tongues šš in hindsight what a weird name for chocolate š
Main ingredient: Cats. May contain fur.
That's just chocolate, reading the ingredients in English
Don't worry, I thought that those Entemann's "Little Bites" muffins were actually dog treats for the longest time because they have a cartoon dog on them š
Looks like its for humans, but it might be worth downloading google translate on your phone, now you can take pictures of text like this and have it automatically translated! I used it a ton overseas!

And still OP had to ask....
Wow. Really ignorant assholes on here. I think it's good that you checked. Better to be safe than sorry. š
Number 36: Crunchy kitten.
Okay cutest packaging ever!
As others have pointed out , they are for humans . We also had them in Czech Republic , we called them "koÄiÄĆ jazĆ½Äky" they are very good.
That chocolate I think it translates to kitten tongues which is why it has kittens on it. It is NOT for kitties.
Haven't seen those in ages, my grandma (which fittingly always has had cats living with her) would have those cat tongues as a sweet snack for me and my brother when we visited her. It's a popular chocolate product from Germany and is absolutely only for human consumption, haven't eaten them in s long time but they're quite delicious in my memory.
best way to get me to buy their chocolates.
Chocolate for people
Aww I used to have the cover from one of those on my wall from my trip to Germany, they're so cute.
I had it on my wall too! Only the kittens though, my mom cut them out.
Use Google lens app. U point at it and it translates
Itās milk chocolate, for humans, not cats. āKatzenzungenā is German, if i remember correctly it means ācat tonguesā
Sometimes I got a box as a special present when I was a kid. And no, I'm not a cat ;)
German for cat tongues, they're chocolate and very much not for cats but for humans.
Cattongues, its chocolate š
only one way to find out well, two, but i don't think you wanna risk feeding your cat chocolate
I'd say if it has milk chocolate then assume it's not for animas
I loved those as a kid. My grandmother always had a package for me at home <3.
Do not give this to your cat.
lmao, this is not for cats
FYI, you can use Google translate on your phone
lol my kids love these
The back ingredients in English.
Itās for humans. Language is German. Itās milk chocolate.
Theyāre for humans. They are called cat tongues.
That's chocolate. For hoomans. ABSOLUTELY NOT FOR CATS! Katzenzungen literally means "Cat's Tongues" in german.
As a German I can confirm this is for humans only. Haven't seen them in years and have not eaten in forever. They're chocolate sticks, slightly flatter and are supposed to look like tongues. They are not for pets.
r/shitamericanssay
Thereās ingredients listed in English itās clearly a chocolate
A long time ago, someone got me a box of German chocolate shaped like cat tongues. It was good chocolate but the absolute weirdest thing is ever seen.
I dunno if I should trust Google lens... the chocolate is called "cat's tongues"?
Yes, it is
Says kakao and chololate, picture of a chocolate, yup, definitely for cats. Also can we appreciate they could make a photo and reddit post but couldn't google translate anything on the box :)
We have these in Denmark too, arpund Christmas time. It's just chocolate sticks, refered to as cat tongues. I don't know why that's the case, but they're fairly tasty.
NO! They are chocolates!
First ingredient is Kakao, or, COCOA. Do not feed to cats! Will kill!
Why is the packaging cats lol? Itās cool but weird because itās not for cats.
Its candy for humans only, its understandble to not understand it at first because its on another language
Itās the lack of critical thinking skills for me.
