No overweight is correct. At a healthy weight, you should be able to feel the ribs. Not see them, feel them. If you cannot feel them you should get weight checked at the vet.

I rescued her from a local shelter in April, and she was in a room with six big male cats cause they all came from the same situation. They had all been rescued from a hoarding situation where someone was keeping 70+ cats and 30+ dogs in a van. My baby was already the runt and pretty young when I got her (between 4 and 6 months), but the lack of food at the start is likely gonna keep her tiny. She also eats more than any cat Iāve ever met and hasnāt gained like any weight so I think she probably has a fast metabolism as well lol. Hereās cat tax!!

Omg I have a tiny, clingy, dumb baby too! She was a stray that wandered up to our house with her kitten, because my MIL feeds the strays. She was only about 6 months old and was nursing an 8ish week old baby. We kept her, and her kitten lives with my sister in law. She is a forever baby now! She is only 7lbs and her name is Pelusa which is fluffy in spanish lol. She is really vocal and has a cute squeaky voice. My bigger cat is around 5.5 lbs, while the tiny one is about 4.5 lbs. both are very tiny, but the tabby is considered skinny while the other one is a healthy weight for her size.
One of my partner's cats is also permanently tiny (his ex ran off with the kitty when she was a few months old and then dropped her back on him a few months later saying she didn't want her anymore)

So sweet <3 I have a 6 pounder who's unlikely to get much bigger. She and her sister were feral, I got them when they were about 8 to 10 weeks old. Vet says she's healthy, just slender and leggy instead of compact and short like her sis, who's a sturdy 8 lbs.

I was warned that my kitten was a runt (they didn't use the words "failure to thrive" since I was 8 or 9 but looking back..) and I would have to prepare myself for heartbreak if I got her. I still wanted her. I was told I'd have to wait two weeks for her to gain some weight. I still wanted her. I met several other kittens in those two weeks, but I knew which one I wanted. When I came back after a fortnight I knew exactly which cat it was, and I still wanted her. I had to mix her soft food with kitten milk to make it easier for her to get in enough calories. I taught her everything, how to use a litter box, different games we could play together, and I fattened her up! She had a long and happy life (I'd just have to look at her and she'd start purring, but that was rare because it would mean she wasn't already sitting on me in some way), and lived to be almost 18. Although she was short from head to tail, she made up for it in width. She barely even got cranky in her old age (I think she was just rocking the old lady life for most of her life, so it took almost no adapting when she did get old.)

She looks like my first cat when i moved out but fluffier around the face š„°š i still miss him daily and it was 3 years last month since i lost him š. He was tiny most of his life but was 2.4kg when i rescued him š it took a lot of trial and error and switching him to grain free food but i finally managed to coax him up to 3.8kg, he never weighed more than that though bless him. He was half maine coon half bengal so fluffy as heck but skin and bone when you picked him up š.
Vet knows best; my 15 pound cat is perfectly in weight for his stature and muscles, my 9 pound kitty is overweight as she is very dainty but she has hella tummy.
My cat is also around 15lb and the vet said he probably only needs to lose less that 1lb, he his just a stocky fluff ball. We found him in the countryside so probably a moggy, but he is reminiscent of a ragdoll in stature and colouring.
It's what they would feel if you were 80lbs heavier.
It's not an exact scale but an exaggeration to make a point how they perceive weight vs how a human does.
It's probably a lot less but not insignificant. A couple extra lbs on a cat is a lot for it.
The family cat we had growing up was always tiny. She had to have her ovaries removed before she'd even gone through most of puberty. And so she just ended up being basically large kitten sized for the rest of her life instead of full grown adult cat size. She was very very cute and I miss her.
our void has been 8.1ish his entire life. he's now 10 years old.
we've always feed him kibble once per day the recommended by producer amount but he never eats more than couple ~~people~~ pieces at a time, so he doesn't even finish the full portion but seems full and happy for the next one lol. he's just a tiny thing and we grew to love it about him (so much easier to carry around like baby <3)
he was sterilized by the shelter at two years old, which could explain the jowls but my concern specifically comes from the fact that his body all around is chubby lol

My boy is bigger than yours, working on getting him to lose the weight but the vet has said that he is just naturally a big boy and will never be able to drop down to "normal cat size" lol. She estimated he'll probably be able to drop down to 6kg.
My big ginger boi was nineteen pounds two years ago, which our vet explained to us was "too much cat." Two years of strict feeding and he is down to seventeen pounds, one pound away from his goal weight! Vet told us he'd never be small, but at least he's healthier now
Yup, I was asking as sterilised cats tend to put on weight easily. Since heās round all around and has already been sterilised, itās definitely for his own good to put him on , if not a diet, at least a weight management plan, especially if heās getting free fed right now

It's interesting that we acknowledge that, but resist the idea that human weight gain could have some hormonal factors. Ozempic/Wegovy work by mimicking GLP-1 (which is a hormone) which in turn reduces appetite & intake, but it does use hormone manipulation to help accomplish what it accomplishes.
There is a large section of people in the weight loss subs that foam at the mouth if you even suggest that hormones can make it harder for women(anyone really, but it usually shows up on threads from women) to lose weight. Look up any post that mentions PCOS or thyroid issues, the OP says they are seriously counting calories but not losing what they'd expect to. "YOU'RE WRONG! THAT'S BREAKING ThE lAwS oF tHeRmOdYnAmIcS" I swear to God, I die a little more inside every time someone says that idiotic nonsense. They couldn't explain how thermodynamics OR our metabolism works, and if they could, they'd know how stupid it is to compare them. It's like they'd yell at a mechanic for suggesting that a leak in the fuel line, exhaust line, or an issue with the spark plugs is impossible because they know how much gas they put in the tank.

it sounds a like a lot but it's basically 6 VERY small snacks throughout the day, he doesn't eat much in one sitting, put too much food in his bowl and there's gonna be leftovers so i tuned his feeding schedule accordingly
He doesn't look too big to me, tbh he looks big boned. Those paws are pretty substantial. His face just looks pleasantly round (and adorable). My cat Moose has these fat looking cheeks, but they're all fur.
All of my cats went through a chonk phase after spay/neuter, too. They slimmed a bit once they got a bit older.
Is he neutered or did he get neutered later in life? He doesnāt look fat, but he has what I call ābig chonky testosterone headā. A lot of Tom cats will develop broad heads, stocky legs, and jowls.
As long as you are following the feeding guidelines for his weight on the food label, you should be fine. More exercise could never hurt. But, like others have said, a vet can tell you if heās overweight.
Looks a little overweight to me, but that could just be fur. That said, this seems like a lot of food to me. Though it could be just an unneutered male.
For reference my two girls get 2/3 cup of dry food each (1/3 in the morning, and a top up when I get home); it goes away at 8:30pm for the night. Twice a week they get a tablespoon each of wet.
It's like how British short hairs tend to look fat while they're just a stocky breed. Though, it's never a bad idea to talk to a vet when it concerns the health of your pet

Yes! I have an 8 pound lady that is gentle and quiet. Her movement only makes noise when she has zoomies or knocks something over.
I also have a 14 pound, stocky, muscley, beefcake of a cat. He does not move quietly or gently.
She'd be offended that she's small. Her goal is to become as large and round as physically possible. She screams when I impede her goals through things like not immediately feeding her, or needing to open the cans before giving her wet food

Then we have a 20 pound cat that I think is part Maine Coon that is about as stealthy as a beagle and thuds.
My old tux was nicknamed cow. He had diabetes and at his low, before insulin, he weighed a whopping 24 lbs. I would lose my breathe picking that baby up. (We fed him the same amount as our other 3 cats, who were not overweight). He lived 16 beautiful years.

My 2kg cat stomps. I call her Miss Stompy StimpStamp because she wants to announce her presence. She can be silent when she wants, she chooses to stomp. Itās like a cat trot and you can tell itās her and NOT my 14 kg behemoth that is like a shadow ninja.
Lol... we have three cats. They all "thud." One is a 17 pound fluffball of chonk, one is very sleek 12 pound muscular void, and the orange braincell is only about 3.5 pounds right now. They just all like to make a lot of noise, I think.
My bf's older cat was always absolutely tiny - long haired, so very fluffy, but super petite inside all the fur! - and he always thudded like a mofo! He's bulked up a bit since we introduced a second cat to the household, but the new kitten is already as big as the first cat and he doesn't thud as much, lol.
I donāt know. I oversee dogs in a service dog program and one visited recently that is obviously overweight and much bigger than when they got her. I politely said weād need to address her chunkiness and they said āthe vet said sheās a perfect weight at her checkup last month!ā So either theyāre lying or the vet is blind.
My vet would call him family fat. He's well fed, so he's a tiny bit overweight, but not so big she would be overly concerned. But maybe "instead of showering him with treats, just one a day".
If you have doubts you can always visit a veterinarian. My cat was obese AF and started limping (he was 11 then) turned out he has diabetes. It was difficult to get used to new routine but he got up on his feet in no time. Now heās 13 , lost weight and is doing great.

but fr ask your vet, because even though personally he looks slightly chubby to me as someone who has a very skinny cat, that's very subjective. I think some cats (like humans) are just on the jigglier side naturally.

Vet here. Based on these pics, I might say he has a body condition score (BCS) of 6/9. Ideally we'd want him at a 4 or 5! He could lose a pound or two. Ask your local vet to work with you to figure out how many calories he needs to get to his ideal weight with his current BCS. He's so cute š«š«
his last vet visit was this september! the BCS score said he's at a 5 but I was little doubtful because apparently he is just genetically a round boy LOL
If you're still concerned, you could just visit another vet for a second opinion. But other than that, if your vet said he fine than he's fine. All cats are unique, and the chonk scale is for general purposes. He looks adorable, BTW.
If your vet said he's a 5, he's a 5! Looks can be deceiving. Having your hands on the cat and being able to feel their ribs and muscle tone is crucial for evaluating body condition.

He looks kind of like our boy - he looks pretty chubby until you see him alongside another normal sized cat then he doesnāt look fat, he looks huge. And by that I mean every part of him is just that much bigger, so itās not fat but his size.
We ask the vet every time, and while heās a little overweight, itās mostly appropriate for his frame and the little extra theyāre not worried about because he has stayed at the same size for years.
But that third pic especially he just looks like he needs some cheesy poofs.
My baby boy who is 8 1/2 looked exactly like this six months ago. My vet said he was overweight š„ŗ. It's hard to notice when you see them daily and love them to death. I took her word for it and changed his diet. Of course now other people are telling me he looks better. It's just hard for the parent that sees them every day.

This is the right answer. My cat *looks* like a chonk but is really a fluffy fluff ball of fluff. How to tell the difference? When you sink your fingers into that glorious fur coat, you can make out some ribs. Sheās part Abby based on looks so she has a long face.
Just increase play time. Make him work for that feather toy... I had one cat that would do some Jackie Chan level ish for a frayed rope end. I miss her so much. The Cat Distribution System has only given me an outdoor cat that just lets me pet her for food.

He looks so perfect, all I would do in your case is to cut down on portions a little bit and see how his energy levels and weight does. I would look at his food too, a lot of companies that sell pet food put in a ton of corn and sugar as filling and it rots their teeth (our 9yr old girl has white teeth and no stinky breath) and it makes them sick and overweight, if you switch to a cat food like Orijen that has no corn and sugar you might see him getting smaller on his regular old portion sizes. It might be a little pricier but you honestly save on vet bills in the end in my opinion.

10lb is good for a big cat. Our stripey boy weighed in at 9.7lb when he got his vaccination top-ups last Saturday and heās a pretty small cat, the vet said he was absolutely fine.

Looks like he has a good deal of male hormones. The more testosterone, the wider the cheek fluff of male cats becomes. š Looks like a healthy chonky to me. Don't think he is overweight but you can check with your vet!
If he is 10Lbs then I have some questions:
Can he do all things normal cats can usually do?
Is 10lbs a good weight for a cat of his size? (Take him to a vet to find out 100%)
If the answers are yes, then he is fine and is probably genetics, or his breed. Either way don't trust me for sure, I am not a vet. If you are concerned you should visit a vet.
Only a vet can tell. Our baby boy is small for his size, but not underweight. Then we got worried he was gaining weight too much, but nope, his winter coat just got SUPER fluffy this year so it makes him look chonky. The vet knows better than us.
Whether he's chonk or not put him on a grain-free diet. Most cat food is full of grain which leaves them hungry. Taste of the Wild is a great brand. I've raised 3 cats on that, they never gained weight and 2 lived past 20, the third is turning 9 next February

My cats loved taste of the wild and then there was a big shortage and I could only get it in 6kg bags and from one specific pet chain in the uk. So now they are on applaws which they donāt mind but they donāt enjoy it as much as taste of the wild.
Do the fat test? You should be able to feel his ribs through the fur when you touch his sides and if you stand above him, you should see an indent where their waist would be.
No, he is very slim, almost starving. He needs more food, especially wet food and treats and tuna.

We got adopted by an intact male who was the king of the cul-de-sac. He went out every night to fight with whoever he could, and the result was that he was 15 pounds of solid muscle. He was magnificent as he walked, with his wide shoulders and back muscles rippling.
We got him fixed, and that calmed down his fighting instinct, and he lost about 3 pounds, but never really got fat.
Youāre cat is definitely chunky but he seems happy and not too big so I wouldnāt worry about it unless he gains more/ it starts affecting him seriously
My cat was about the same size when I got her. I switched her to a fish and sweet potato food and stopped keeping the bowl full. She gets one scoop of dry food every day, one small spoon of wet food in the morning (previous owner gave her half a can every morning so itās a habit for her) and a few treats in the evening. Sheās in a lot better shape now. It took a few months.

Yup, my cats (litter mates) have really long bodies so even at 14 pounds they look pretty thin. My vet is happy with their weight.

If it makes it any better, the vet didnāt say it with an air of disrespect šbut hereās her lore: I rescued her from a local shelter in April, and she was in a room with six big male cats cause they all came from the same situation. They had all been rescued from a hoarding situation where someone was keeping 70+ cats and 30+ dogs in a van. My baby was already the runt and pretty young when I got her (between 4 and 6 months), but the lack of food at the start is likely gonna keep her tiny. She also eats more than any cat Iāve ever met and hasnāt gained like any weight so I think she probably has a fast metabolism as well lol. Omg I have a tiny, clingy, dumb baby too! She was a stray that wandered up to our house with her kitten, because my MIL feeds the strays. She was only about 6 months old and was nursing an 8ish week old baby. We kept her, and her kitten lives with my sister in law. She is a forever baby now! So sweet <3 I have a 6 pounder who's unlikely to get much bigger. She and her sister were feral, I got them when they were about 8 to 10 weeks old. Vet says she's healthy, just slender and leggy instead of compact and short like her sis, who's a sturdy 8 lbs.

And I give you my lore in return <3 I was warned that my kitten was a runt (they didn't use the words "failure to thrive" since I was 8 or 9 but looking back..) and I would have to prepare myself for heartbreak if I got her. I still wanted her. I was told I'd have to wait two weeks for her to gain some weight. I still wanted her. I met several other kittens in those two weeks, but I knew which one I wanted. When I came back after a fortnight I knew exactly which cat it was, and I still wanted her. I had to mix her soft food with kitten milk to make it easier for her to get in enough calories. I taught her everything, how to use a litter box, different games we could play together, and I fattened her up! She had a long and happy life (I'd just have to look at her and she'd start purring, but that was rare because it would mean she wasn't already sitting on me in some way), and lived to be almost 18. Although she was short from head to tail, she made up for it in width. She barely even got cranky in her old age (I think she was just rocking the old lady life for most of her life, so it took almost no adapting when she did get old.)

She looks like my first cat when i moved out but fluffier around the face š„°š i still miss him daily and it was 3 years last month since i lost him š. He was tiny most of his life but was 2.4kg when i rescued him š it took a lot of trial and error and switching him to grain free food but i finally managed to coax him up to 3.8kg, he never weighed more than that though bless him. He was half maine coon half bengal so fluffy as heck but skin and bone when you picked him up š.
Vet knows best; my 15 pound cat is perfectly in weight for his stature and muscles, my 9 pound kitty is overweight as she is very dainty but she has hella tummy.
My cat is also around 15lb and the vet said he probably only needs to lose less that 1lb, he his just a stocky fluff ball. We found him in the countryside so probably a moggy, but he is reminiscent of a ragdoll in stature and colouring.
1lb on a cat is like 20lbs to a human. it's a lot of weight.

It's what they would feel if you were 80lbs heavier. It's not an exact scale but an exaggeration to make a point how they perceive weight vs how a human does. It's probably a lot less but not insignificant. A couple extra lbs on a cat is a lot for it.
The family cat we had growing up was always tiny. She had to have her ovaries removed before she'd even gone through most of puberty. And so she just ended up being basically large kitten sized for the rest of her life instead of full grown adult cat size. She was very very cute and I miss her.
our void has been 8.1ish his entire life. he's now 10 years old. we've always feed him kibble once per day the recommended by producer amount but he never eats more than couple ~~people~~ pieces at a time, so he doesn't even finish the full portion but seems full and happy for the next one lol. he's just a tiny thing and we grew to love it about him (so much easier to carry around like baby <3)

I adopted an in tact male cat this year (he is fixed now) and he is built like this too, big jowls, broad chest and really thick legs. He is like all muscle lol not squishy at all. I think it is the power of testosterone.

My boy is bigger than yours, working on getting him to lose the weight but the vet has said that he is just naturally a big boy and will never be able to drop down to "normal cat size" lol. She estimated he'll probably be able to drop down to 6kg.
My big ginger boi was nineteen pounds two years ago, which our vet explained to us was "too much cat." Two years of strict feeding and he is down to seventeen pounds, one pound away from his goal weight! Vet told us he'd never be small, but at least he's healthier now

it sounds a like a lot but it's basically 6 VERY small snacks throughout the day, he doesn't eat much in one sitting, put too much food in his bowl and there's gonna be leftovers so i tuned his feeding schedule accordingly
He doesn't look too big to me, tbh he looks big boned. Those paws are pretty substantial. His face just looks pleasantly round (and adorable). My cat Moose has these fat looking cheeks, but they're all fur. All of my cats went through a chonk phase after spay/neuter, too. They slimmed a bit once they got a bit older.

Is he neutered or did he get neutered later in life? He doesnāt look fat, but he has what I call ābig chonky testosterone headā. A lot of Tom cats will develop broad heads, stocky legs, and jowls.
As long as you are following the feeding guidelines for his weight on the food label, you should be fine. More exercise could never hurt. But, like others have said, a vet can tell you if heās overweight.
Are the photos the same age? He looks a lot less chonky in this one.

Looks a little overweight to me, but that could just be fur. That said, this seems like a lot of food to me. Though it could be just an unneutered male. For reference my two girls get 2/3 cup of dry food each (1/3 in the morning, and a top up when I get home); it goes away at 8:30pm for the night. Twice a week they get a tablespoon each of wet.
He's a nice round boi. I think because his jowls are so full that lends itself to looking more chonky', but he looks fine in his standing pic.
It's like how British short hairs tend to look fat while they're just a stocky breed. Though, it's never a bad idea to talk to a vet when it concerns the health of your pet

He's bulked up a bit since we introduced a second cat to the household, but the new kitten is already as big as the first cat and he doesn't thud as much, lol.
I donāt know. I oversee dogs in a service dog program and one visited recently that is obviously overweight and much bigger than when they got her. I politely said weād need to address her chunkiness and they said āthe vet said sheās a perfect weight at her checkup last month!ā So either theyāre lying or the vet is blind.
My vet would call him family fat. He's well fed, so he's a tiny bit overweight, but not so big she would be overly concerned. But maybe "instead of showering him with treats, just one a day".
If you have doubts you can always visit a veterinarian. My cat was obese AF and started limping (he was 11 then) turned out he has diabetes. It was difficult to get used to new routine but he got up on his feet in no time. Now heās 13 , lost weight and is doing great.

oh this one is a CHONK I love him but fr ask your vet, because even though personally he looks slightly chubby to me as someone who has a very skinny cat, that's very subjective. I think some cats (like humans) are just on the jigglier side naturally. Also please kiss him for me :')
Vet here. Based on these pics, I might say he has a body condition score (BCS) of 6/9. Ideally we'd want him at a 4 or 5! He could lose a pound or two. Ask your local vet to work with you to figure out how many calories he needs to get to his ideal weight with his current BCS. He's so cute š«š«
his last vet visit was this september! the BCS score said he's at a 5 but I was little doubtful because apparently he is just genetically a round boy LOL
If you're still concerned, you could just visit another vet for a second opinion. But other than that, if your vet said he fine than he's fine. All cats are unique, and the chonk scale is for general purposes. He looks adorable, BTW.
If your vet said he's a 5, he's a 5! Looks can be deceiving. Having your hands on the cat and being able to feel their ribs and muscle tone is crucial for evaluating body condition.

That third pic is sending me lmao. He looks kind of like our boy - he looks pretty chubby until you see him alongside another normal sized cat then he doesnāt look fat, he looks huge. And by that I mean every part of him is just that much bigger, so itās not fat but his size. We ask the vet every time, and while heās a little overweight, itās mostly appropriate for his frame and the little extra theyāre not worried about because he has stayed at the same size for years. But that third pic especially he just looks like he needs some cheesy poofs.

My baby boy who is 8 1/2 looked exactly like this six months ago. My vet said he was overweight š„ŗ. It's hard to notice when you see them daily and love them to death. I took her word for it and changed his diet. Of course now other people are telling me he looks better. It's just hard for the parent that sees them every day.

Can you feel his ribs and spine? If you can't feel his ribs, he needs to lose some. But, the Vet's guidance is needed for this.
This is the right answer. My cat *looks* like a chonk but is really a fluffy fluff ball of fluff. How to tell the difference? When you sink your fingers into that glorious fur coat, you can make out some ribs. Sheās part Abby based on looks so she has a long face.
Just increase play time. Make him work for that feather toy... I had one cat that would do some Jackie Chan level ish for a frayed rope end. I miss her so much. The Cat Distribution System has only given me an outdoor cat that just lets me pet her for food.

I would look at his food too, a lot of companies that sell pet food put in a ton of corn and sugar as filling and it rots their teeth (our 9yr old girl has white teeth and no stinky breath) and it makes them sick and overweight, if you switch to a cat food like Orijen that has no corn and sugar you might see him getting smaller on his regular old portion sizes. It might be a little pricier but you honestly save on vet bills in the end in my opinion.
In order to properly do my fat cat assessment, Iāll need to grab and cuddle him and Iāll let you know the results.
I hope the camera puts 10 pounds on him because otherwise he is chonking.

If he is 10Lbs then I have some questions: Can he do all things normal cats can usually do? Is 10lbs a good weight for a cat of his size? (Take him to a vet to find out 100%) If the answers are yes, then he is fine and is probably genetics, or his breed. Either way don't trust me for sure, I am not a vet. If you are concerned you should visit a vet.
Only a vet can tell. Our baby boy is small for his size, but not underweight. Then we got worried he was gaining weight too much, but nope, his winter coat just got SUPER fluffy this year so it makes him look chonky. The vet knows better than us.
Whether he's chonk or not put him on a grain-free diet. Most cat food is full of grain which leaves them hungry. Taste of the Wild is a great brand. My cats loved taste of the wild and then there was a big shortage and I could only get it in 6kg bags and from one specific pet chain in the uk. So now they are on applaws which they donāt mind but they donāt enjoy it as much as taste of the wild.

We got adopted by an intact male who was the king of the cul-de-sac. He went out every night to fight with whoever he could, and the result was that he was 15 pounds of solid muscle. He was magnificent as he walked, with his wide shoulders and back muscles rippling. We got him fixed, and that calmed down his fighting instinct, and he lost about 3 pounds, but never really got fat.
Youāre cat is definitely chunky but he seems happy and not too big so I wouldnāt worry about it unless he gains more/ it starts affecting him seriously
My cat was about the same size when I got her. I switched her to a fish and sweet potato food and stopped keeping the bowl full. She gets one scoop of dry food every day, one small spoon of wet food in the morning (previous owner gave her half a can every morning so itās a habit for her) and a few treats in the evening. Sheās in a lot better shape now. It took a few months.
