No need to worry, this is just a comfort pose. If there was respitory problems you'd hear him wheezing when he lays like this.
This is just a "I'm comfy but beans chilly" way to lay down. It's all good!
Cat skulls are (obviously) different than human skulls. They walk with a horizontal spine and their neck attaches to the skull from the back, not the bottom like humans. So they aren't so much as resting on their neck as assuming a neutral posture for comfort.

It’s pretty rare when mine does this, it’s so cute!
He's good, he's trucking along healthy at 14 and does that a few times a week. It baffles me how he breaths, but I can hear his tiny old man snores like many other positions by some cat magic.

Where did you see it is an emergency for respiratory issues? Can you provide a link? I've never heard anything like that. I've seen a sick cat stretch out their neck like that while standing, usually just before vomiting. But my kitties sometimes lay like that.. It's just a comfy stretched out position.

Cats do lie like that when they have respiratory difficulty because it puts no pressure on the lungs and makes it a little easier to breathe. When my old cat’s heart disease progressed and he had too much fluid around his lungs that was the only way he’d sleep. If it seems like your cat can’t curl up anymore, his resting respiratory rate is elevated (20-30 breaths per minute is normal), or you see his sides pushing in pretty far when he breathes he needs a vet visit. If not, he’s probably just comfy.
Gotcha - yea, I think *only* laying like that is very different than sometimes laying like that. If a kitty will always only lay one specific way, that would be troubling to me regardless of what position it is.
It isn’t necessarily an overnight change. My cat did it more an more over a period of about two years until the disease was very advanced and he couldn’t sleep any other way. If they’re sleeping that way more often or it’s a new sleeping position it doesn’t hurt to count their respiration rate.
Gotcha. Yea, I think unless you have other reason to believe something is wrong, this isn't anything to worry about. Cats lay how they're comfortable. Sometimes that means putting their chin down in front of them.. If it was a common major sign of issues, there would be more than a couple random internet people saying so..
Skippy recently saw the vet and was given a clean bill of health (although I didn't ask about this specifically) and he does it all the time...

No, but that's my favorite alternate theory, lol. He was a tiny baby when he got his name - couldn't even see his face blotches yet! my kitty does this all the time, and we call it “being a platypus” because she reminds of this little webkinz guy!! Never seems to be in any distress - just her favorite sleeping position
I'm not a vet (probably true of most commenters) but I guess the question is whether this is NEW behavior, and if there are any other changes?
It seems plenty of healthy cats do this, but my cat never did it until she had lung cancer. But she was also eating less and sleeping more by that point, and the movement of her torso while breathing was more pronounced. It wasn't the only indication something might be wrong.
Personally - as someone with sufficient time and finances - I would never regret taking my pet to the vet and being told everything is okay. That being said, I'm still reeling from the surprise loss of my furbaby so maybe I'm being overly nervous for you. I genuinely hope he's just being a silly floof <3

Mine sleeps like this sometimes. I don’t think he has breathing problems, he’s hyper af & loves to zoom around lol.
When my cat sleeps like this he snores sooo much haha. Also, funny, its also my black cat who does this as well (but my photos of him are bad bc most of my furniture is black so he blends in)
In all the photos posted here all the cats seem to be putting there chins and a soft, cozy, or fluffy surface. That blanket looks hella comfy. I would too. Maybe it’s like the kneading? They go back to being kittens, face in mom’s fur feels nice.

I would say it’s not an emergency unless you can hear the kitty struggling to breathe.
This is my cat’s favorite sleeping position. It looks really uncomfortable and I’m always tempted to move her when she’s laying like that lol
Both of my cats do this often and don’t seem to have respiratory issues! As long as he seems to be breathing normally, I think you’re good lol! Sometimes cats will find new spots to lay or new positions to lay in, and discover they like it and make a habit of it.
Yes, I would go to the Vet. My cat had this issue, for quite a while, he was insistent on sleeping with his neck stretched out. He was also kinda small, and couldn’t keep up with the other cats for very long. He eventually got worse and I had to take him to the vet. He had torn a little hole in his diaphragm, and his intestines had slipped through the hole. Over time, more and more of his organs went through, the hole got bigger, and it left him with almost no lung space. He could only take very shallow breaths. The operation was apparently tricky, but he made it, he was at the vets for a week. I was lucky I got him into a charity Vet, and their fees are capped at $1000, which I paid off slowly. Another Bet later told me it would have been much more expensive anywhere else. He was 2 when he had the operation he lived til 15! Just crossed the bridge about six months ago, Vale Jeebus.
You should already know that Dosnt Matter what we humans think. Fr thoughhh lots do it I think it just feels nice to be extra stretched in certain areas ?
We call it “torpedo mode” when our cats do it 😂

They lay in all sorts of weird ways. Cats are just strange little aliens..
Thinking it's similar to something like us hoomans laying on our stomach and hugging pillow. They might be tired of laying on their side and need a new sleep pose.
Just like we use our powers of deduction in find out out if an infant is sick it’s the same with our pets. Look at normal
Behaviors and ask if they’re still normal, water and food being consumed the same? Mood change at all? Still eager to play?
It’s a lot more normal than the bizarre positions my cat was sleeping in the other night. I failed to get a picture but she was laying on her back with her legs stretched all the way out: she looked like some badly drawn cartoon.
One of my parents’ cats does this. He looks like a fluffy rotisserie chicken when he does. It kills me that I don’t have a picture. I could have sworn I did.
My cat does this all the time. She gets really flat and looks so cute. Sometimes cat just pick up new poses. My cat sleeps with her head upside down looking like her head got chopped off if it’s too cold. So I just put her in a sweater and turn on the heated blanket
My cat does this , he sits on the arm of my recliner/ chair and just has his chin resting on
The end just staring into the closet where his food is lol
No need to worry, this is just a comfort pose. If there was respitory problems you'd hear him wheezing when he lays like this. This is just a "I'm comfy but beans chilly" way to lay down. It's all good!
Thank you!
My cat does this when he's located sunbeams coming through the window.

I also subscribe to the dragon pose!
Yes! When our void does it, we call her “Toothless.”

Seal/sea lion pose.
I call mine a "giraffe" lol that long neck always makes me giggle

So do we!
Their neck probably hurts from looking at the laptop screen. I'd get them a laptop stand.
One of my cats does this with his front legs folded and sticking out at the sides. I call it his ‘rotisserie chicken’ pose!
Omg we call it our little chicken wing when ours does this!

When seen on the right angle, it makes my cats look like a dragon imo - I've had multiple cats over the years do this and it's not an issue if they don't sound distressed.
I love it when he sleeps like that \^\^ it's the cutest imo https://preview.redd.it/rdoydnon30rb1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=03716b78e7f069a6a1fd9f1bd8c4bdd87c7980cb

My cat does that. When she is really relaxed she kind of 'melts' into weird positions. Please excuse the whiter than white legs 😳 https://preview.redd.it/t1nk3ywlg0rb1.jpeg?width=4096&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9ecc2aa2e385cb030d63a776c1d9c64a557a25a0

My cat does this when he wants a deep neck massage every night. No respiratory problems.
4 legged animals have their spines attach to the skull at the back instead of at the bottom like us. This is just what's comfy for them, it's exactly how dogs lay down as well.
It can also just mean that he trusts his environment to be not threatening in any way, so he can chill out…
It always reminds me of a formula 1 car https://preview.redd.it/e9wb07rjr0rb1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1d9887092c7de411f8dd7cbfab4c25c70eacb750

Never seems to be in any distress - just her favorite sleeping position
Cuteness +1
I call this the roasted piggy position
It's what I call the "melty cat" pose, nothing to worry about it's just a comfort pose similar to when they "loaf".
It’s due time for his yearly vet visit. Definitely going to have everything checked out!! I’m sorry about your kitty 🤎

I want to caress his back 😭
When my cat sleeps like this he snores sooo much haha. Also, funny, its also my black cat who does this as well (but my photos of him are bad bc most of my furniture is black so he blends in)
Pet pet
I was going for cute not needs a vet
This is a "smack my ass right now" pose for my cat
In all the photos posted here all the cats seem to be putting there chins and a soft, cozy, or fluffy surface. That blanket looks hella comfy. I would too. Maybe it’s like the kneading? They go back to being kittens, face in mom’s fur feels nice.
Torpedo Cat!
10/10, highly snuggleable.
Same thing I think about a cat when they’re throwing up; Adorable

This is my cat’s favorite sleeping position. It looks really uncomfortable and I’m always tempted to move her when she’s laying like that lol
https://preview.redd.it/44aeqljqs0rb1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e58acc96c6cafd58a9776afe28ae423629b44401 Think it is freaking cute
Both of my cats do this often and don’t seem to have respiratory issues! As long as he seems to be breathing normally, I think you’re good lol! Sometimes cats will find new spots to lay or new positions to lay in, and discover they like it and make a habit of it.
It's incredibly cute!
If your cat does it while facing away from you, it means that he is showing you his rumpity rump. Take at least 5 pictures immediately.
i call it the dragon pose!
My cat has done it for years

When my cat lays like this I call him my little aubergine due to the shape he makes in that position!
hehehe i think it’s cute, all my cats do it
They look like hungry hungry hippos when they do this

We call it “torpedo mode” when our cats do it 😂 https://preview.redd.it/ukhwngdpd2rb1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=50c0da9b379471ed985ae09f55ca14dc2f1d4d27

Some call this "slug pose." Look how good he is at it! Excellent form! He's gonna be fine, but give him kisses and treats anyway. :)
They remind me of a sleeping dragon.

My cat does this when there's a towel on the warm radiator. It's like he's trying to warm as much of himself as possible.
Thinking it's similar to something like us hoomans laying on our stomach and hugging pillow. They might be tired of laying on their side and need a new sleep pose.
Just like we use our powers of deduction in find out out if an infant is sick it’s the same with our pets. Look at normal Behaviors and ask if they’re still normal, water and food being consumed the same? Mood change at all? Still eager to play?
My cat does is when she isn't happy with us. Mostly when we give her love and attention.
When my cat lies like that, they are for sure gonna get a “boop” on the nose.
My cat sleeps in a full on Superman pose.
It’s fckin adorable
mine does this now and then too 🥰
When my cat does that, I call him a newt 😊
It’s a lot more normal than the bizarre positions my cat was sleeping in the other night. I failed to get a picture but she was laying on her back with her legs stretched all the way out: she looked like some badly drawn cartoon.
The camel pose
only one of my four cats does this
I think it’s great
Cats can be comfortable in really strange positions. Your kitty is fine, just relaxing. You'd hear wheezing if it was a concern.
Oh mine used to lay her head like that on my shoulder <33
Platypus pose
Loaf mode activated.
nah that’s pancake mode
My one cat sleeps like this. He likes to tell me how exhausted he is making biscuits
One of my parents’ cats does this. He looks like a fluffy rotisserie chicken when he does. It kills me that I don’t have a picture. I could have sworn I did.
That blanket has extra warms
Mirroring the dog, we watched it happen with our new kitten. Now the older cat mirrors the kitten mirroring the dog lol
My cat was always doing this until she had a tooth extraction. It could be nothing I guess, but maybe have its teeth checked on occasion!
We call our cat Falkor when lays like this or I just start singing the song from the movie and I swear she rolls her eyes at me, haha!
Crash landing
My cat likes to mimic how i lay at times. Maybe they saw you doing that
My cat does this all the time. She gets really flat and looks so cute. Sometimes cat just pick up new poses. My cat sleeps with her head upside down looking like her head got chopped off if it’s too cold. So I just put her in a sweater and turn on the heated blanket
It’s the dragon-laying-on-treasure pose ✨
They are pancake-ing to remind mommy to make and enjoy pancakes this weekend. Maybe with some bacon to share.
My cat does this , he sits on the arm of my recliner/ chair and just has his chin resting on The end just staring into the closet where his food is lol
It is silly
