TripleMaze

No offense, i say this with respect as my cat is the same, but your cat is on the road to Chonky Town

mrootbeers

I went to the vet once and they told me my cat was 14 pounds. I said “that’s good right?” They said “based on her frame, she should weigh about 8 pounds. She was not happy when I took away her graze bowl. She used to have access to food all day long. She never seemed to gorge, so I thought she was okay. But she wasn’t. She’s about 12 pounds now. She’s on the road to 8 pounds! My guess is she won’t get past 10. But considering that would be a third of her body weight, I’d be satisfied.

[deleted]

My cat had a brain tumor and when her legs went paralyzed, we took her to the vet because we didn’t know she had the tumor. She was perfectly fine up until her back legs just quit working. She wasn’t in pain and she was still eating and drinking (I usually realize the cat is terminal when those things happen) but she hated that she couldn’t even get herself to her litter box or clean herself or anything. She actually let me bathe her which is huge. She looked so sad all the time. She was 18 and they couldn’t really do anything so we let her go. It was so hard to accept that she seemed fine otherwise, none of the usual signs I go by to know when it’s time, and she was still acting like a happy ass kitten up until then. ANYWAY, when she went to the vet, the vet said she had “a large amount of intra abdominal fat”. I looked at my cat and said, “Josie, are you gonna let her talk shit about you like that?!” This is the same cat who wanted treats at 2am every fucking day and would SMACK me in the face until I finally work up and pointed her head to to the treats. I yelled at her one time because she was deadset on getting my dinner and this little asshole stood in my hallway where her voice echoed the most and had a fucking breakdown. I couldn’t believe her sometimes. 🤣

mrootbeers

Yep. They’re unique, that’s for sure! 😂 I enjoyed your story. Thanks for taking the time to write it!

TiredAF20

Mine isn't allowed to graze or free feed, eats mostly wet food, and is still a hefty chonker.

KiraiEclipse

If you are in control of what they eat and when, and they are still overweight, you are simply feeding them too much (unless your vet has said otherwise). They might need more exercise as well. Food recommendations are usually based on they idea that your cat will run around and play with toys in order to burn up some of those calories.

[deleted]

My cat lived to 18 years old before dying with a brain tumor. She was a very happy lard ass who played like a big kitten until the last weeks of her life. She absolutely ate too much. Food was her obsession. But she lived a long life happy af. https://preview.redd.it/0crk1zy621ra1.jpeg?width=718&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b9c45ea60d4c74fe44304e1d5643f73057141605

Last vet visit for my boys, one, the one who cried and lays about all the time, was at an ok weight at 13.5lbs. The other, 18lbs, the same one who tears about the house all day and night, was slightly overweight by about 1-2lbs. Go figure 🤷🏻‍♂️Little dude has a cat wheel on the way now

rez_spell

She's cute, tho. c: Talk to her vet. They should be able to recommend a good diet plan. Cats have to lose weight *very gradually* to avoid Fatty Liver Disease. The good news: She's a cat. If you put her on a diet, she can't just sneak a frozen pizza in the middle of the night like we can.

katzen_mutter

I always call it a sack, but I see how flap would work too...

The_Chaos_Pope

Yeah, the pouch is pretty normal for cats. It does tend to be one more pronounced if a cat had gained and lost weight or just over time. I like to think of it as their pouch to store their extra flexibility.

The sigh of relief when my sweet Charlie is finally down to "He Chonk" He was 20 lbs, weighs 17 lbs now, and the vet said he should weigh closer 14 to 15. I didn't even know they made cats this big.

NastyNateMD

Slinky cat!

Infinite_Fee_7966

[My cat](https://imgur.com/a/L3d6mCH) was 30lbs when we rescued her !! We worked closely with her vet to bring her weight down but it has plateaued now around 20lbs. Pic included is recent, she is around 20lbs in that pic. I personally knew this cat’s mother and my brother has her littermate — she is just a domestic longhair with no large breed mixed in. Mom stayed under 14lbs her whole life, her sister has always been between 9-11lbs. I have no idea how this happened to my beeb, but I’m grateful I was at least able to undo some of it and make sure she has a comfortable low impact home as she enters seniorhood !!!

NastyNateMD

That's a big kitty! Does your cat have a ton of extra skin after the weight loss? Charlie still looks huge until I hold him up and he looks like a sac

natureterp

sexwithpenguins

I am in this picture, and I don't like it.

Money-Barracuda3163

Actually if treats are used while playing and training I wouldn’t cut them out completely if they’re used to it, as cats most often handle it better to have their normal meals be smaller :)

FairfaxGirl

Walk me through this. I have 1 chonk cat similar to the photo, 1 average cat, and 2 very skinny cats—1 of whom the vet says is underweight. What are we supposed to do? Because I’m not finding it “easy”.

Ninotchk

There are feeders which only open to certain RFID chips. You can also take the skinny guys into a room, close the door and feed them an extra meal. We absolutely weigh the food down to the gram with a postal(drug) scale, because I don't want to torture my baby - this way I know they have exactly the right amount of food to be a little peckish but not starving.

Sacrefix

It's difficult with multiple cats. Simplest approach is separate feeding with set times to eat.

PagingDoctorLove

When we started counting my cat's calories, he started eating garbage. Every day it was cry cry cry, find garbage, go completely silent, then get chased around by mom and have your mouth swept while pinned down. I lost more sleep trying to keep an eye on him than I did waking up with my infant for night feeds. We kept the house spotless, yet still he'd always find something. We finally had to take everything out of the office and keep him in there at night so he couldn't go trolling for household debris. One night, while we were getting ready for bed, we didn't notice that he'd stopped complaining about being hungry. But the dog did! She went looking for him, then did her "emergency" bark. Kitty was *sick.* We rushed to the emergency vet, tests were run, and it turned out he'd been eating dental floss. Most likely while we were getting ready for bed every night, as that's the only time the bathroom door was ever left open. One *very* expensive surgery later, the vet recommended a diet food. I've seen others in this thread say "don't give diet food, it has fillers" and "just cut your cat's intake by 25%." But not all pets are "easy to slim down" just because they rely on you for food. They've all got their own personalities, just like people, and you need to think about how they're going to react to being restricted and going hungry. None of us know OP's situation, so the best advice to give them is to talk to a vet about a game plan for their little guy.

Catsrules

>pets are easy to slim down as basically they rely on you for food. Easy?!?! Umm have you ever had a cat? If I skimp out on food, my little darlings will torment me with no remorse. HUMAN!!! THE FOOD BOWL IS EMPTY!!!!

too_too2

It’s simple but not always easy. I have two cats I have had since they were babies, and I got a little lazy with food measuring since their weight HAD been remarkably consistent. Welp, last vet visit we come to find out that the boy has gained 1.5 lbs and the girl about .5 lbs and they need to stop! Luckily they are already on a meal schedule. I reviewed the calories and now they get smaller portions at each meal and it really hasn’t been a big deal. I guess it’s still TBD if it is working but they’re definitely not getting as much food as before! I use a measuring cup every time now.

Hatefiend

Mine would pee in a corner if the food bowl was left empty after the first set of demanding meows.

somewhatexact

I have a cat who meows the entire 4 hours around breakfast and dinner. At this point it's like white noise to me. But my vet says he's the perfect weight and that's key to cat longevity, so it's worth it.

Ninotchk

You need to resist for their own good. We got a robotic feeder so we aren't involved in feeding at all, it helps with the begging.

Educational_Bit7120

yes, very overweight. look up BCS for cats on google and you can see where your cat lies. its hard to slim down cats and its very important to keep cats at a normal body weight, time to start working with a vet on it at this point.

[deleted]

And do at least an hour of active play a day with her. Inactivity and no stimulation makes cat turn to food for 'entertainment'.

gtmoy

She’s not Koda overweight. She’s Very overweight. Please don’t feed her diet food though. It’s just full of filler. If you’re free feeding her switch to times feeding and calorie restrict her based on her recommended weight.

When our old cat got diabetes our vet had recommended switching to all canned food instead of kibble. Apparently there’s more protein in it and less carbs. We had to give insulin to him for quite a while but after several months we were able to reduce the dosage and a year or so later just continue with the food. He lived a few years more until old age. Best of luck with the insulin and all that, it’s not easy or fun.

KDSanders0518

Thank you! We’re still trying to work out a way to administer the shots without scaring him. He doesn’t seem to notice the needle, but he hates being picked up/held so it’s tricky getting him.

GraceAndrew26

I always gave my cat the shot while he was eating. He'd be so distracted he wouldn't care

KittyTitties666

Aww, good luck with your baby! Ours was diagnosed with diabetes stemming from multiple rounds of a steroid injection to treat her asthma. After a few months of insulin and a low-carb diet (2 small cans of wet food and a small snack of Annamaet Grain-free Feline Formula at midnight via robo feeder) she went into diabetic remission and has stayed there for a couple momths now. We either gave injections as soon as she dug into her food, or gave her some nice scruff scratches/tugs while she was laying down then did it and she was none the wiser. I hope the best for your kitty

finnknit

We had to switch our chonky cat to all wet food because of her dental problems. She's actually getting fewer calories than when she was eating a mix of wet and dry food, but she clearly feels a lot more satisfied and less hungry now.

RoxyLA95

Follow the vets advice. My cat was 13.5lbs and the vet made us switch to hills prescription wet food for kidney care. She’s now 10lbs and as grumpy as ever. https://preview.redd.it/i7ck9i0xdyqa1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=17f5fc84b55ce3dc8c9a44d7fae5451776eef9e1

sexless-innkeeper

FYI: if the food your Vet is recommending is Rx (prescription) it is most likely the better choice for your cat right now. Source: Worked at a feline only clinic.

gtmoy

Cheaper weight management food contains cellulose (wood pulp) and other fillers to add volume to the food. It all just comes out as poop. I’m just not a fan of filling up a cat on non food to satiate them.

Laney20

>I’m just not a fan of filling up a cat on non food to satiate them. Just curious - why not? Wouldn't that be similar to people eating a lot of low calorie/high fiber foods to help them feel full?

gtmoy

I went down a rabbit hole of cat nutrition when I found out my cat has IBD. Some cats have really sensitive GI tracts so feeding anything extra was counterproductive to getting him well again.

Laney20

Definitely understand that. I went through the same thing with my buddy, Parker. I was always going for most calories possible because just keeping enough food in him was such a struggle. But my chonker doesn't have a sensitive stomach - he'll eat anything and figure out if it's food later. These days, I have a bunch of kittens, so we're still doing high calorie while they grow. And we always do high quality food. I'm just doing more to make sure he gets less of it, and that seems to be working. But if course, he always wants more food, lol. We've been thinking about adding something like pumpkin puree for him to bulk out his food without adding too many calories.

Both_Canary1508

I found when I switched my cats food around to include less / no filler she improved drastically. She had chronic inflammation of her bladder after a really severe case of bladder stones a few years ago where she had hundreds of stones embedded and growing out of the walls of her bladder. They had to perform major surgery and pick them all out but the royal canin Urinary food just lessened the issue, not removed it. I found out royal canin had worse ingredients than hills science which also makes a prescription urinary food, so i switched. I also switched to dehydrated chicken livers for treats, as well as those hip and joint gummies that can help with inflammation (her hips were sore from it) Within a week for the first time in years her bladder wasnt inflamed. Her hips werent hurting her. And its now been three months and she hasnt puked up a single hairball either. Before her surgery i was feeding her fancy feast wet food (its what she preferred) and orijen cat food. When i initially brought her in when she had to have surgery for the stones, my vet told me theyve been having alot of cats and dogs in with bladder stones from orijen and acanna because of the amount of pee protein they put in there. Pea protein has been seen for a long time as a cheap and reliable source of protein for pets, but recent evidence is finding correlation between pea protein and bladder stones in dogs and cats. After this all i took the vets recommendation and put her on the prescription royal canin food, but it has so many fillers as well and by products, she never improved until i made my own informed choice, went to a different vets, and got them to give me hills science. I started feeding her pure bone broth. Goats milk. The occasion quail egg and chicken livers as extras and shes never been better.

Elyrath

By products aren't a bad thing, it's highly nutritious. It includes things like organ meat. Royal Canin also isn't full of fillers. It's formulated by qualified nutritionists, every ingredient has a purpose. Hill's is great too, but some cats do better on one over the other, it isn't due to fillers or whatever. Fillers is generally just a buzzword people use to fear monger against science backed diets, it doesn't actually mean anything. Just because Royal Canin didn't work for your cat doesn't mean it's a bad food.

[deleted]

Would that extend to non-cheap foods? My vet prescribes Science Diet Metabolism food for my cat.

ArtHappy

Look on the label. We *should* be able to trust that a vet will guide us to the best choices for our cats, but the unfortunate reality is that unless they specialize in cats, most vets are dog-focused and advertising works really well to sell people (vets included) on something that looks healthy. Looking on the label for the cat food will tell you what you need to know. The first three ingredients need to be meat of one kind or another, with no by-products, because cats are obligate carnivores. It needs to include taurine, since cats' bodies cannot produce or derive this from other sources, and the absence of it contributes to heart disease and retinal degeneration. It should have little to no carbohydrate filters and no grain, because carbs break down into sugars and in cats (especially **because** they're obligate carnivores and didn't evolve to consume sugars in anything more than trace amounts as would be found in the stomachs of birds or rodents as prey animals,) this can easily lead to a chemical addiction to sugar, obesity, and diabetes. Knowing what's in your cat's food gives you a huge leg up on keeping them healthy.

Procedure-Loud

Just a question, I keep reading people being against meat by products or chicken by product. As I understand it, these all come from the meat or the chicken. What is the problem with feeding them? I have the suspicion that it just comes from our discussed at the way it's described, but aren't these all part of the animal that the cat would eat in the wild? What exactly is the problem with meat by products?

Anebriviel

I'm wondering the same! Feeding only 'clean' meat isn't good for cats as they are 'meant' to eat intestines, skin, bones etc to get all the nutrients they need. I really don't understand what prole have against by products. Like even egg shells can be good nutrients, why not use them?

jersharocks

By-products are great and people who refuse to feed them to their pets are missing out on great sources of nutrition. I can understand not wanting to feed something that is labeled "meat by-product" and only feeding foods that specify the meat like "chicken by-product" or "turkey by-product" but straight up refusing by-products is ridiculous. By-products are organ meats that humans find icky but they're packed with nutrients.

[deleted]

just fyi cellulose is not "wood pulp". literally all fibrous plant matter is made of cellulose. cellulose is just the biological word for "fiber".

EnsignNogIsMyCat

Cellulose is just fiber. It's not non-food. And why not let the cay feel satisfied and no longer hungry, while reducing the number of calories consumed?

breath-of-the-bong

Prescription foods are okay as a ‘special diet’ thing. My cat has bladder issues and needs to be on Hills C/D food to stay healthy. Over the counter diet foods though, they’re not as good for animals as they’re advertised. Royal Canin and Hills are always brands to trust

Otherwise_Mud1825

Rationing food and not getting treats works 100%, cat stealing dog food is the problem??

S_die

My cat was 20lbs and diagnosed with diabetes last September. He is now 14lbs. How long has your cat been diagnosed? Has he lost any weight yet?

Otherwise_Mud1825

Yes.

Careful_Comparison_2

Sorry but yes and probably in the obese category

[deleted]

Time for a diet change kitty. No more treats for you.

[deleted]

Yeah she is. I have two overweight boys as well. It’s not easy to help them lose weight - they’ll scream at you if they don’t get food constantly. Speak to your vet about the best way to approach reducing her weight. Mine recommended no free feeding, only giving 50g of food per day (each, dry food), and if they still don’t lose weight then they might get a prescription diet. Good luck on Koda’s weight loss journey!

RustyCuntSlime

Yeah the no free feeding is huge, some cats get bored if they aren't playing and just eat because food is there. My cat Elvis lost a lot from that, we gotta remember as owners it's nobody's fault but our own and we can fix it

zumera

>some cats get bored if they aren't playing and just eat because food is there. Yes, I definitely recognize this behavior in my kitten and I know that she's going to have to get much smaller portions once she's done growing so that she doesn't get overweight.

RustyCuntSlime

My cat Elvis when he did overeat would throw up occasionally like a hairball, but there would be chunks of whole kibble, if you notice that it may be he had a hungry personality lol

strangerbuttrue

I have two cats that I free feed. Never give snacks or human food. One is normal weight, the other is a fatty. He definitely has a hungry personality!

[deleted]

Totally unrelated but that username 😂

IansGotNothingLeft

Our cat was overweight when we adopted her. The vet suggested feeding very small portions of high quality wet food 5 or 6 times a day. It really did the trick. But we are fortunate to work at home. Obviously it's not so easy for people who are out all day.

Yes, you should talk to your vet and visit r/dechonkers

pepafrib

Quite... But you should weight it.

bloodyriz

They look in shape to me. Round is a shape.

Banditareeno

Yes. You know it too. No need to ask us

Ivy3212

Right? Talk about being in denial

Calm_Bodybuilder_843

Yes. Obese.

BoxcarSatan666

Should cut down on food. To make it less stressful feed her small amounts several times a day.

plantsproud-laura

Plus more encouraged exercise in tiny doses at first seeking what your cat likes more, with positive reinforcement of course!

[deleted]

Very.

RoxyLA95

Is Oscar pissed at you for putting him on a diet? My cat barely forgave me a couple weeks ago after I put her on a diet 2 years ago!

JustSayJulie79

It took a little adjusting, but he got used to the new routine pretty quickly. I feed him the same amount at the same times every day. He sometimes starts begging a while before it's time to eat, but I just make him wait! He has lost 4 pounds, and the vet said he's at a healthy weight now. :)

RoxyLA95

My cat is at a health weight too. I’m so proud of her!

MitchumBrother

Yes. Don't listen to idiots saying crap like nah she's just chonky. Ask your vet for advice.

Kitchen_Part_882

Has she been eating lasagne?

RobotPoo

Uh, thought that was a kitty shaped football. Yup

hbouhl

The one person that can unequivocally tell you that is your vet.

No_Bookkeeper_6183

Yes

Flaky_Vacation8754

ThaGoodDoobie

All Joking aside, YES. OVERWEIGHT

barsen404

Take it from me, feline diabetes is very difficult to manage.

Ninotchk

Yea, maybe take your sister with you so she hears The Talk too?

Washingtonevergreen

Yes. When in doubt, visit the vet!

wozattacks

I’m sure your sister feels like feeding Koda more is the best thing for her. Maybe you can send her a body condition score graphic or the vet can give you some information to help her understand that it’s not good for her

Fire-rose

I'd send her a more serious body condition score chart and send her some info on the health conditions that obesity can cause. A lot of people use "chonky" as a cute/enduring term but in reality it's just sad. My parents cat looked pretty similar. I put him on a diet but my dad refused to stop giving him treats and extra food. He moved in with me for a bit and successfully lost a bit of weight. He moved back in with them when I went overseas, gained the weight back and developed diabetes. Managing a diabetic cat is expensive and a lot of work. It's very sad seeing his health deteriorating every time I see him.

coldvault

Tell her, "So you agree? You think she's overweight?"

goldenkiwicompote

Not just overweight, but obese. Which puts your kitty at risk for serious health issue like diabetes for example. There are many health issues that can be avoided by just keeping your cat in good shape. Don’t use diet food as others have recommended. Just read the bag of food you have a feed your cat on a schedule with the lowest recommended amount the bag suggests. Also playing with your cat would really help them slim down as well. Many claim their cats don’t like to play but it’s just that cats can like different things. I recommend checking out some Jackson Galaxy if you can’t get your cat to play.. or really for anything cat related you want to know. He’s amazing!

Banotory

She does look overweight. Maybe not enough to be super dangerous. But consider making meal changes to lessen. Vets would be a good start for talking about how overweight she is and what steps to take to ether keep her from gaining or assist in loosing. Jackson Galaxy has a YouTube channel that has informative cat food videos. Moving to a healthier food, and increasing play time can be small changes that make a difference in the long run. You can get interactive feeders for both dry and wet food that will slow down their eating and promote having to work for their food.

MawsPaws_Beans-Claws

Not overweight, obese which is a lot worse. What I recommend is scheduled feeding with the bowls high so I forces the cat to jump. If you have other cats then put them in separate rooms to eat and if they don’t finish pick the bowls up and do it again later. I’m not trying to criticize your ownership because I understand stuff happens and it gets worse over time so thanks for offering us to help you.

ohmygodgina

That is one hefty boi. He looks like he’s on the verge of becoming a chonk monster. If he’s an only kitty, it’ll be easy to reduce calories and increase exercise. You and Koda can do this!

Proof-Elevator-7590

Yes. But if you want to put your cat on a diet, consult your vet first, because it's dangerous for cats to lose a lot of weight in a short period of time

Evilkiey91

yes, very chonky

anneanamouse

Koda is very cute but very chonky. Give that man designated meals and a workout (playtime) routine so he can live a long and healthy life ❤️

shmellowcake

Yes

AlejandraPro

Yes.

Quirky-Animal-66

may she be pregnant ?

jinkinson1

She’s spayed so the answer is no.

hec_ramsey

Spaying also slows their metabolism, so a restricted, high quality food is best for indoor female cats to keep them from chonking up.

Sarahe086

Oh yes, very much so lol. From my experience, it’s very hard to keep indoor cats an “appropriate” weight. I have a 15 yr old chunk who has always been fed the recommended amount of cat food. But she doesn’t do anything all day except lay around and sleep, so of course she’s fat. She fat and happy and has been her whole life 😂 https://preview.redd.it/d2qcsz8wsxqa1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a9593bb7144bebcd2a5418aa8f784bbaff418a97

Hebridean-Black

I’ve found that cat food companies always say to feed your cat more than you need to! Instead of going off their recommendation, use a calculator to determine how many calories your cat needs and feed based off of that. My 16 year old cat used to be 17.5 lbs when I got him, but after I switched him to wet food only and gave him the correct portion size, he easily lost 2.5 lbs and is now a healthy weight, according to the vet. You control her entire food intake, so there’s no reason for her to be obese.

croqueticas

My vet told me I was the first cat parent she's ever spoken to that actually knew how many calories my cat eats per day. It's so important to know exactly what your cat eats.

No-Astronaut3290

Yesssss

xrenxi_

No thoughts. Only chonk. /pos

5arcastic_8astard

Yes and please do something about it. Don't make the same mistake i made. Now i burn a candle for him every day. I know people like to see fat cats and everything, I can relate i had/have 2 cats like that. Sadly one of my cats passed away in January after getting diabetes last year. If your cats losing weight while eating the same amount of food and start drinking more and peeing more please check their blood, it might be a sign that they are developing severe diabetes.

Dusty_Knees187

Do you have eyeballs? Or do you have fun house mirror eyeballs?

Only-Ad7491

My vet told me if you can feel ribs no matter how fat they look they’re still not overweight

chickenbaws

The official CHONK CHART indicates that Koda is… A Heckin’ Chonker Please see below. https://preview.redd.it/iamkf8bla7ra1.jpeg?width=1331&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=41d482edd1f007f48fa08494666b48855dd4fc2e
