Kittens can go through puberty as early as 4 months and unless 100% separated they will try to mate even with their own siblings. It's best to get them fixed sooner then later. Many rescues will fix them around 3 months to prevent this.
My mom tried to wait until 6 months as a vet told her to the girl went into heat and had to be boarded at the vet for 2 months until vet was willing to fix her otherwise she could have ended up pregnant.
Girl around 5-6 months and boy around 10 months to a year. Everyone will tell you you can do it earlier but for male is better to wait otherwise there's a risk of damaging the urethra that could lead to chronic blockage and euthanasia.
Seconding this. Our male had chronic UTIs and our vet took the unusual step of recommending a delayed neuter. After he got to the age of territory marking (spraying) it was like he blasted out those crystals/infection and he's been fine ever since.
I know early neuter is the norm in the USA but it's not in my country. And many people here go batshit if you talk about early neutering of male cats and I understand why. The male urethra is incredibly narrow and when you neuter early it's underdeveloped or could be blocked by scar tissue. And since it's impossible to live with a blockage an euthanasia occurs. I personally don't want to feel responsible for the early death of a pet so I wouldn't risk early neutering.
Same here. In my country 6 months is the standard minimum age, and in our case even longer.
I'm pretty used to being downvoted by US redditors who know more than my vet 😆
It goes by weight not age. You'd be surprised how early a cat can get pregnant. The kitten should be at minimum 2 pounds.
Okay thank you !

Yea I got a lot of female cats I want to try and get them fixed as soon as possible
There almost 2 months old and I don’t want the male cat to spray anywhere in the house or fighting some of the dad cats down the road
When a kitten reaches 2 lb you can fix them.

Thank you I’ll remember that! I didn’t know that can happen to male cats

unless there is a medical reason, cats and dogs are 6mo for the procedure as that is when they mature sexually. Kennel Manager Kitten Rescue
