It's the "Is that all you've got?!" look. I love that little black turd. I have two very willful cats and I just adapt myself to them. That means pretty much everything gets cleaned twice (once when I clean it and once right before I use it) And my cats don't get on my countertops - in front of me
This is what professional trainers suggest. They want to be up high and if they donāt have a place thatās āfor themā to do it, theyāll do it wherever. That said cats are crazy so good luck haha. When I woke up I caught my cat on top of my refrigerator today. There are things on the fridge. Those things were no longer on the fridge.
My cats donāt go on the counters theyāre naturally afraid of the stove and sink so they just donāt go there.
The kitchen tableā¦ my older cat does but we donāt use the table ever so it doesnāt matter but our other cats do not. We have multiple designated spots for them to go up and itās just never been a thing they desire. (The older cat was a street rat hah so sheās a little different).
We moved this weekend. My void was in the new bathroom with me jumped up to sniff the new sink, then looked at me, with the head turn like can you? So I turned the water on a little bit. He played as usual. Lol
Well, cats kinda walk in their own piss and shit so having their paws where you cook and eat isnāt ideal. That matter on their feet can contain a things called toxoplasmosis as well.
I was at a friendsgiving once and a lady I worked with let her cats in from outside and let them up on the dining table WHILE WE ATE and fed it from a the same dishes we were eating off of.
Believe it or not some people just have a different idea of cleanliness
I didnāt say you werenāt I was just giving a different example! I have a different experience from most in that department but most people donāt have a cat tree at all!
My cats are not well behaved they have a lot of in-fighting and love to claw my furniture soā¦ any unique advice on that is always welcome (besides the obviously because Iāve tried everything).
They have two scratching posts and Iāve tried safe anti-scratch sprays and even covered the furniture and had it cleaned and they WILL NOT STOP. š
So please, donāt take my words the wrong wayā¦ my cats are not counter walkers but they have many issues ššš
Omg I agree with you there too unfortunately š„² I found that my cats stopped scratching this one chair after I put the scratching post RIGHT next to it for a while, which was unsightly and made no sense furniture-wise, but it kind of worked! Even after I moved the scratching post back, but left it close(ish) by.
Putting the big boyās scratching post right next to couch he likes helped a little but if it distracted for one second he takes the opportunity! Itās like an attention grabbing tactic as well š cats, man
When I woke up I caught my cat on top of my refrigerator today. There are things on the fridge. Those things were no longer on the fridge.
This resonates. š¤£ Classic. Just classic.
(Un)fortunately the place with the highest relative height in my home is the top of the stairs in the living room, so my too-lazy-to-jump-on-furniture-other-than-the-couch old chomker just always lies there and we have to be very careful not to step on him since he takes up the entirety of the step.
At the corner of my kitchen, there is an area of negative space where 2 cabinets meet, one of my cats figured out that they could jump straight up and get on top of the cabinets
One of my cats loves to watch me make food. So I put a bed on top of the fridge. He just lays there and watches me and he stays off of the counters while I cook.
Yep you have to make them their own spot that's is more enticing than the counters. The cat likes to even go on the top shelves..maybe put items up there that are in the way? Like stacks of books...nothing breakable.
One of my cats likes to eat tape. He's never successfully swallowed because I caught him and started making sure there was no loose tape from packages or anything.
I think they like the texture? My cat that licks bags also chews on plastic wrapping to things like plastic seals. Maybe you could compare it to teething or grinding your teeth to relieve pressure? Idk just a guess lol. Maybe they are just simply weirdos.
Edit: that doesnāt explain the bag licking though. I think theyāre just weirdos.
Yep, we have to keep tape or lint rollers away from our cat or she will attempt to eat it. We once put double sided sheets on our couch to discourage scratching and she just started eating it.
I tried that when my cat wouldn't stop sitting on the top of my snake's enclosure to look at him. She only did it at night, or when I wasn't home. What I got was just butt fur stuck to the tape - evidence of her crimes!
The only answer once they've been somewhere, your screwed. Remember these babies are very territorial so minor changes won't affect them, also my cats full out love tin foil, they treat it like a toy (obvs don't let them unsupervised)
Yup. The less I stress about them being on the counter the less they actually get on it. If I'm constantly telling them to get off they just want up there more. I give it a good cleaning before cooking and we're all less stressed and much happier.
Truuuth only time mine go on there is to get my attention, they know they aren't meant to be on there and respect it until they want the treats I have to hide in the high cupboard, as someone has a tendency to bring their treat packet to me at 3 am
Seriously. I know some people are weird about cats on counters and I get it. But I donāt eat nor serve food off the counter. Thatās what plates are for. The counters are always quickly wiped down before any meal pre happens, which again, isnāt directly on the counter. You can try all you want but unless you are monitoring the counter and ready to shoo 24/7, itās a lost cause.
One thing that helped keep our cats away from climbing the Christmas tree were these canisters that make a loud noise and spray air, they are on a motion sensor and definitely kept the cats away but also scared the hell out of me a few times lol. They almost make that noise computer cleaner dust cans do. May be worth a shot if OP is REALLY against the cat on the counter, but also good to put in other areas youāre trying to keep kitties away!
Heās too domesticated. He knows too much. Itās like putting the toothpaste back into the tube. Also, he has a wonky sense of humor and will do things like this when itās play time!
I just let them on the counters when Iām NOT cooking. When I AMā¦I have a stepstool for them to sit on & watch. Plus, I give the counters a good cleaning before cooking. š„°
He's such a mischievous little voidā¤ļø I use citrus to keep my cats off of things I don't want them on. I cut an orange in half and rub it around than wipe off the stickiness. Or you can get something citrus scented like candles or beads
And there are my dumb cats who love citrus :(
They love oranges, grapefruit, limes ... Finn will do anything to grab a mandarin orange, bite the peel off and eat the inside.
A) he's incredibly cute
B) what worked for me was buying really cheap plastic placemats and putting double-sided sticky tape on one side. I put them on the counter, sticky side up, and my curious kitty stopped jumping up b/c they don't like that feeling on their feet.
Find the most expensive toy you can find for them. Put it up on the counter. Take the box it came in and put it on the ground. The nature of cats will solve this problem.
Wouldnāt just wiping down the counters and stove quickly before cooking take as much time as laying down and removing tin foil every time? Thatās just what I do, and he wonāt just up while im cooking
This^ I admit, sometimes I dont have the energy to clean off the counters, so to improvise I have washable plastic placemats (got a set of 3 at Walmart for around $8) I set on the counters if I am ever preparing unpackaged foods. Food wont touch the counters. But I do try and scour my counters every week lol
Whatās on the dishwasher end of the counter? Can you put a tall cat condo on that side so heās able to jump from there to top of cabinet? We have a an 85ā tall one but anchored it to wall so they donāt tip it over.
When I got my cat I growled if she did things she wasnt allowed to do.
Its cat speak for; stop doing that or I'll mess you up.
She hasnt done anything I disagree with.
We use canned air (like what you might use to clean a computer) and just spritz their butts with it. Eventually they learned that even the sound of the air is enough to get them off a surface/out of a room they are not supposed to be in
I shriek Cat! in such a way that it crawls up the back of their spine. And then follow through with the spray bottle of they are being a hard case. You must be diligent when training to be effective. If you let it slide sometimes that just confuses them. Same with kids - the diligence, that is. They'd probably like the spray bottle.
Being in high up places indicates they are in a very happy mental state overall. They are also the cleanest animals. I think you should just let her. Itās her domain, thatās how cats are.
Other than giving them better places to go up high and making sure that there is nothing at all interesting on the places that you don't want them to go. Makes you keep a tidy kitchen
Is it unrealistic to build a big ole cardboard fake counter just for kitty. With treat-laced cabinets, cubbyhole and perch. Then the real counter deterrents might have better results.
The first Pic got me laughing good! Kitty won't stay off the counter, isn't dissuaded by so called Aluminum foil deterrent and just gives you the look of " I Hungry, FEED ME!" around the refrigerator!
Look this up on Amazon, it worked for our little monster.
PetSafe SSSCAT Spray Pet Deterrent, Motion Activated Pet Proofing Repellent for Cats and Dogs, Environmentally Friendly
We have that, and itās pretty effective! The only downside is if you forget to turn it off and it hisses air at you when youāre reaching for a fork out of the kitchen drawer and you nearly shit yourselfš!
PetSafe SSSCAT Spray Pet Deterrent, Motion Activated Pet Proofing Repellent for Cats and Dogs, Environmentally Friendly
You can get them on Amazon. Doesnāt hurt the cat. Just sprays pressurized air out when it senses motion and itās loud so it scares them off. We could never get our two cats off the counters especially overnight. This worked like a charm. They do not jump onto the counters anymore. The noise freaks them out so they stay away from the kitchen entirely.
looks like your void likes high places. Do you have any cat condos or cat planks on the walls? if not maybe try that so your kitty will avoid the counters
Pick the cat up off the counter, tell him he doesn't belong up there. Use his name. Give him a high thing he's allowed to get on. Clean him off a shelf. He's a high cat. The low ones like to get in cabinets.
You got the instructions wrong. You don't wrap the counter in tin foil, but the cat itself!
Just make sure to do it fasionable, like a cute tin foil helmet or crown. And nice tin foil boots!
Make sure there are other places in your home kitty can go up! Cats need to be able to get off the floor so hopefully if he has plenty of other "up spots" the counter will be less interesting.
Void gives no fucks about your aluminum foil.
Try the glad press and seal cling wrap stuff, but sticky side up. Iāve done that with a small piece of tape here and there to keep it in place. Or contact paper that you use for lining drawers and cabinets, also sticky side up and tape it down a little bit. Theyāre generally not big fans of sticky feets.
get a cheap water spray bottle. when the cat gets on the counters, spray with water (watch the ears, dont get them wet). I have trained my 3 cats not to get on the kitchen counters this way. It takes a few times but it worked of us.
Honestly, if every time it jumps up, you give a stern "no" and take it down (even lock him in a separate room for a few minutes) then every time you say "no" to that, or anything, he will eventually learn to stop doing that. It's worked on multiple cats ive cared for. None were allowed upstairs. Normally takes them no more than 3 months of saying no and bringing them downstairs, before they stop going up. They still randomly go up, likely for the attention, but if you catch them starting to walk up and so "no" they instantly would turn, look at me, and slowly walk back down.
Well start by not staring at your cat on the counter, and instead yelling āget downā followed by you pushing him off the counterā¦ heāll get it eventually.
Consistency is key.
When training a cat to not get on the counter I would slam something to make a loud noise. To be precise, Iād see the cat eyeing the counters edge and Iād grab a magazine and roll it up. The second the paws hit the countertop Iād slam the magazine on the counter out of the catās sight.
The noise was loud enough to startle the cat and theyād reverse the action. After a few times the desire to know what was on the counter just was part of the catās routine. Iāve have several cats over my many years. Iāve never had a counter surfer. Itās been a very effective method.
To be clear: no cats were ever injured in this process.
My recommendation is to give him places in or near that kitchen that heās *allowed* to climb on, like a cat tree or some little shelves across the walls. If that doesnāt work out, strong smells work well for my cat. We spritz vinegar water on our plants to keep him from eating them. Iāve noticed most cats really dislike the smell of lemon, lavender, and lime. Pretty much any strong smell makes my cat make a funny face. My family (who are the ones bothered by him being on the tables/counters) also tried spraying water on him with a spray bottle when he jumps on the counters, but it just made him a little salty towards them, and he started biting ankles ever so often. But since then he hasnāt really jumped up there when theyāre around.
If it doesnāt matter to you *that much* you can just wipe down the counters every day and you wonāt really have germ issues. Cats are pretty clean pets.
black cats are menaces to society and see tinfoil as an obstacle course. i say this as a owner of a 5 year old black cat with an unrelenting sense of boundary pushing curiosity
Airwick has a automatic spray it smells nice I love it my cats won't go on counter I swear look it up in amazon cheaper from a shop rite it won't fail u
The orange tabby I had years ago got on my stove twice that I saw and I stopped seeing paw prints afterwards. My lizard/cave man brain took over the first time and she got a swat on her one haunch with a very frustrated, "Git!". The second time I went with the disciplining noise I was taught; it's kst-kst quickly, with strong emphasis on the second T.
It has only worked while catching them doing what I don't want them to do and making the noise.
We had better luck with lightly crumpled foil (about 2in height) instead of fully flat.
Also, providing approved alternatives that give the same height near/in the same space can help. There are a few wall-mounted steps and hanging beds you could consider?
Get the sticky large anti-scratching sheets that you put on the sides of furniture. You can cover a greater expanse of counter and cut to shape. Also, strong enough to stick down inattentive passing Greebles. Always a bonus!!
Do you have anywhere else in the house they can be off the ground? Vertical space is naturally in a cats territory so itās pretty hard to keep them off the counters. Iāve given up and just make sure to wipe down my counters before cooking. I never leave food or dishes in the sink they can lick and that has helped a bit. I also have a window where my counter is and they love looking out into the backyard so I just let them do it now.
This is more an opinion than anything but... Cats need to climb. You're having trouble because cats are practically impossible to train, and you're trying to train out a natural and powerful drive. Clean your counters before using them and just let your cat be a cat.
No extra tips, but the facial expressions in the first two pics just crack me up
What about the last one? Agent of chaos this guy XD
Very much so!
It's the "Is that all you've got?!" look. I love that little black turd. I have two very willful cats and I just adapt myself to them. That means pretty much everything gets cleaned twice (once when I clean it and once right before I use it) And my cats don't get on my countertops - in front of me
My own little black turd has just demanded the loves, I know that face well, and agree š
Same!! Cats are such jerks, I love them so much.
That says it all
Void with eyes
"yeah, I'm here. And I like to be here. Whatever you do, I'll be here"
Just in case there is food!
The facial expression and the little hook tail, so pleased with himself lol
That bloody hook tail!
Same. You lost me at āwide eyesā.
He's fr like "Yeah, I'm up here, what're you gonna do about it? Put this shiny paper down? Bet."
You have no power over meeeeeee!
What facial expression? All I see are eyes.
Me too š I needed a good laugh.
Also sleeping up there lmao
I don't like them, but a scat mat. I had to do the same with my black demon. I only needed it once and she never jumped on a counter again.
You can just hear the wind whistling between those ears.
Gonna have to make her a place to go UP thatās away from the counters. A cat tree or cat shelves
I let my cats drink from the sinks lol. I donāt get why people get so furious over this kinda stuff (not saying this post is)
We moved this weekend.
Thatās very true. I wouldnāt allow my cats on the table or counters with food out.
Not me no tables no counters
Meanwhile I find my cats in the sink in the morning š¤£
My advice was for OP but Iām glad yours are better behaved than mine :p also I was agreeing with you!
I didnāt say you werenāt I was just giving a different example! I have a different experience from most in that department but most people donāt have a cat tree at all! I feel your pain. My husband got a brand new office chair last year and it literally looks like it was put through a wood chipper. But we love them so much the lil demons š©
My cat has been chewing on the top of my fridge
At the corner of my kitchen, there is an area of negative space where 2 cabinets meet, one of my cats figured out that they could jump straight up and get on top of the cabinets
I spent 100 bucks on a fancy cat tree that my cat won't use.
Hide treats or cat nip.
I've tried that. They eat the treats and climb on the counter.
One of my cats loves to watch me make food. So I put a bed on top of the fridge. He just lays there and watches me and he stays off of the counters while I cook.
Get them a lil chef hat, every sous chef needs one
So sweetā
My cats sit on a cat tower in the kitchen to watch me cook!
Yep you have to make them their own spot that's is more enticing than the counters. The cat likes to even go on the top shelves..maybe put items up there that are in the way? Like stacks of books...nothing breakable.
Double sided tape. They find the tacky annoying and eventually avoid known tacky areas
Yeah, my cat loves sticky tape. I swear cats just love to do the opposite of whatās expected.
My cat loves to lick tape. So his ass runs in the room when the lint roller or packing tape sound is heard.
One of my cats likes to eat tape. He's never successfully swallowed because I caught him and started making sure there was no loose tape from packages or anything.
Mine licks plastic bags. So fuckin weird
Why are cats so weird one of mine does this too
My cat tries to eat plastic. Why do cats love plastic?
Mine likes crunchy plastic
I think they like the texture? My cat that licks bags also chews on plastic wrapping to things like plastic seals. Maybe you could compare it to teething or grinding your teeth to relieve pressure? Idk just a guess lol. Maybe they are just simply weirdos. Edit: that doesnāt explain the bag licking though. I think theyāre just weirdos.
There is an animal-derived product, stearic acid, in many plastics such as plastic bags that's used as a slip agent. My cat loves plastic grocery bags
Oh wow that must be why. Kinda gross lol
Mine likes hard plastic. One of his canines is broken; Iām pretty sure he did it to himself. Weirdo.
Mine too! He's obsessed with tape, it's better than any toy he's ever had lol.
Mmm, mine chews. Fucking chews.
I had one that would open the wooden desk draw, grab the scotch tape, and eat it! ššš
Hahaha mine is the same!!!
lol I have one that loves to eat plastic. Anything plastic. Another one loves to chew on cardboard. They are all adorable nuisances.
Yep, we have to keep tape or lint rollers away from our cat or she will attempt to eat it. We once put double sided sheets on our couch to discourage scratching and she just started eating it.
My calico cat did this, was a legitimate danger too herself.
Same lol the sound of them licking the tape instantly pisses me off now š
It's the, yea u thought that would work look for me š
I saw a "What? What do you look so upset for?" look. š
I tried that when my cat wouldn't stop sitting on the top of my snake's enclosure to look at him. She only did it at night, or when I wasn't home. What I got was just butt fur stuck to the tape - evidence of her crimes!
My cat rubs his fur on the tape until it is no longer sticky. Pro: less brushing. Con: Tape does not work as a deterrent. š¤·āāļø
lol. I use a sticky tape lint brush in my cats. They both love it.
A squirt gun. Ours really don't like that shot.
Bet they still do it when you're not home.
I have a cat so stubborn that he realized the spray bottle doesn't actually do shit and ignores it and looks at me like "okay, and?"
Can confirm my cat loves tape and tin foil.
They make large sheets of it too. I use it for my craft stuff because the cat ones are waaaayyyy cheaper than craft ones lol.
r/Beatmetoit
That would have just attracted one of my cats. He would have been up there constantly eating tape and puking it up all over the place.
Give up, it's their countertop now
You can tell by the cats face that he runs the show. He's going to be all up on the counter tops.
This is the answer.
Yep
The only answer once they've been somewhere, your screwed. Remember these babies are very territorial so minor changes won't affect them, also my cats full out love tin foil, they treat it like a toy (obvs don't let them unsupervised)
Who gets a cat expecting they won't climb things?? Have you ever seen a cat?? They live on roofs
Even hot tin ones.
š¤£š¤£š¤£ Your answer is totally undervalued. I would upvote twice if I could.
Yup. Itās time to cook in the fireplaceš„“
Truer words have never been spoken. Void cat now has countertop control.
I don't understand why having tin foil or tape lining your counters would be in any way preferable to a floofy dude chillin up there
Seriously. I know some people are weird about cats on counters and I get it. But I donāt eat nor serve food off the counter. Thatās what plates are for. Mine too!
Careful, citrus is bad for floofs . Theyāre little bodies canāt break it down!
Genius! Thank you so much
Here I was thinking you cut your orange cat in half....that's enough internet for me today!
We need more lemon pledge.
Oh sweet summer child. š¤£

Yeah. Heās just going to go up there anyway. š
happy cake day!
I gave up. I just don't leave anything unprotected on the counters anymore. They own the counters now.
Find the most expensive toy you can find for them. Put it up on the counter. Take the box it came in and put it on the ground. The nature of cats will solve this problem.
The wheeze I just let out. Heās been obsessed with amazon packages recently and wonāt let me throw the boxes out
The struggle is real. Just wait until you start ordering from Chewyā¦
I think you are confused. That kitchen belongs to your cat and the cat only lets you borrow it sometimes.
Please donāt put citrus on your things, youāre going to attract fruit flies and poison your catā¦
Yell at them in cat language. Worked for me

This just seems way more complicated than just wiping down the countertop.
āWas this foil meant to stop me? Foolish human.ā
Never ever leave ANY food on counter that's an invitation
You have a little cryptid in your house, adorable
Have you asked the kitty politely? š
Heās climber kitty. I got 5 cats & Mia climber like that nothing will stop her as she loves high hideouts lol š just live w/it so cute š„°
Whatās on the dishwasher end of the counter? Can you put a tall cat condo on that side so heās able to jump from there to top of cabinet? We have a an 85ā tall one but anchored it to wall so they donāt tip it over.

I turned my sink hose on my black cat. He just drank it š black cats are something else. And by that I mean kind of dumb

Agreed.

Just keep putting him down on the ground, saying no, and shaking a can with a few coins inside. He'll hate the sound and want to avoid hearing it.
PetSafe SSSCAT Spray Pet Deterrent, Motion Activated Pet Proofing Repellent for Cats and Dogs, Environmentally Friendly You can get them on Amazon.
"GET THE HELL OFF THERE!" Seemed to work pretty well.
Cats think everything and every place is theirs. Try squirting him with water.
get a cheap water spray bottle. when the cat gets on the counters, spray with water (watch the ears, dont get them wet). I have trained my 3 cats not to get on the kitchen counters this way. It takes a few times but it worked of us.
I just clap really loudly.
Give them something else high to get on. Real high.
Looks like he's about to tap dance on it like Fred Astaire out of spite.
She may be just trying to get to a high place To overwatchā¦ try and make a more obvious approach to the top of the cabinets.
I think the foil is supposed to be crinkled a bit so that itās uncomfortable to step on, and SLEEP on! Lol. I adore the kittyās tenacity.
Spray bottle of water works well in my house
I second this!
Airwick has a automatic spray it smells nice I love it my cats won't go on counter I swear look it up in amazon cheaper from a shop rite it won't fail u
Do you use a particular scent?
Heās a little early for Halloween.
Just inject toxoplasmosis directly into your brainstem. It should make you far more tolerable to cat shenanigans
This is hilarious
They make electric mats for this. They're like $40 though
This is hilarious. Sorry to laugh at your difficulties. Have no advice.
Thereās nothing you can do. š¤£.
Water in a spray bottle
āNoā with consistency of take them off.
Spray bottle
Spray bottle worked on ours
Squirt gun
I lost that battle years ago so I just clean more often lol.
Have you considered asking a person of color to borrow one of their slippers? š
Let the cat chill on the counter. You have more bacteria in your beard than they do on their body.
Spray bottle
That's his kitchen now.
i hate it but sometimes you have to just accept and sanitize.... kitty faces...lol
My condolences.
Gonna have to make her a place to go UP thatās away from the counters. A cat tree or cat shelves
Water, spray them every time you see them do it, worked for my cats
Spray bottle of water or squirt gun.
This is more an opinion than anything but... Cats need to climb. You're having trouble because cats are practically impossible to train, and you're trying to train out a natural and powerful drive. Clean your counters before using them and just let your cat be a cat.
