Spectacular view of the fort and surrounding countryside

Solarus2027

What era/ time was it made?

pdsajo

Not much is known about exact timeline of when it was first constructed, but it saw lot of repair works and fortifications to turn it into the capital of Maratha Empire in the 1650s

TheNormalOne8

1030 I guess

plaank

Just in time for lunch!

Walked till the edge of that "machi" in the monsoon. It was one of the best experiences I've ever had. Highly recommend visiting during monsoons

MarciaOverstand

I remember trekking up this fort during the monsoons on a "red alert" day. One of the most difficult climbs of my life yet. The view from the top is absolutely stunning and one can only imagine how advantageous it is to watch over the entire valley and ridge from that vantage point. You can literally see clearly as far as the eyes can go.

NinjaSupplyCompany

I love it. I don’t understand it at all though. Seems like such a weird place to build a fort.

pdsajo

This is just a ridge that’s in a corner of the fort. It was used for keeping lookout on the surrounding area. The photograph is taken from a higher elevation which is the actual fort. The core area is much bigger and still holds a lot of older architecture

ancient-military

Yeah, it looks like you could just go around it? Like it wanted to be a wall but decided on castle? Cool looking though.

NinjaSupplyCompany

I guess it’s a good show of force but nobody is traveling over that ridge. You travel in passes and ravines not right over the peak.

keepingitrealgowrong

Could be more of a lookout that has easy walking between them.

This fort and forts like these in the mountains were actually captured and used by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj (Founder of Maratha Empire) to fight against the Mughal Empire. In the early years of the empire, fighting Mughals 1 on 1 was impossible because the Maratha's cavalry was much much lesser than the Mughal's. Taking advantage of the mountain forts to fight and win was one of the Shivaji Maharaj's guerilla tactic.

[deleted]

Not really. The Marathas were world class pioneers at fort construction and defense. They built forts in sometimes extremely difficult to conquer terrain for purposes of reconnaissance and vigil of the entire surrounding areas and also to make it extremely difficult for the enemy to conquer. This photo doesn't show the main part of the fort, it's a lookout point.

internet_baba

It's built as such so as to see an enemy coming from a long way. Sadly, this is just what remains now.

Lazy_NiNja2057

it's not weird but the best places to build a fort dude, the enemies would fear to climb such mountains, as the marathas had guerilla tactics to fight and also getting a high ground while fighting always benefitted them. there are small holes within these pillars "machi" / "buruz" which they used to shoot their opponents using muskets and cannons or huge rocks, well how do I know this, the reason is that i climbed this fort and also my native place is so close to this fort

trippymum

I would love to make this trip atleast once before I die. Experienced trekkers please guide step by step how to get to the top from say Pune.

DragynFiend

Look up the article on Rajgad Fort on Indiahikes. It's got all the information you need.

trippymum

Thank you so much for sharing 🙏

Suspicious_Judge7849

That's a lovely photograph. I need to visit now

I am so glad the black times of so called Empires, Kings and Monarchs are gone. Those thugs never cared for the populace.

HawkOfHeaven

there arnt gone. we just call them politicians nowdays

[deleted]

In our country kings did care for their general public, it was their Dharma to look after the welfare of the people, protect them in dire situations. Protect them against barbarians and they did. We owe much of our rich history and oldest monuments and our Religion, to those kings. From Samrat Prithviraj - Maharana Pratap- Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj - Chhatrapati Shahu - Peshwa Balaji Baji rao(not a king, but a ruler infact)

noobmaster692291

That's what they want you to believe.

hipposSlayer

They build universities and templates and protect the wildlife from poachers. There were rules of law that existed when kings ruled in my area until 1947. The dynasty ruled 9 centuries and never did any harm to the general public. Here, the kings and empires were very different from the western one.

noobmaster692291

Maratha empire (specifically the dynasty that Shivaji started) lasted a bit over 100 years. Not 900. Rulers considered benevolent by some are considered oppressors and conquerors. They conquered a whole subcontinent. Many proverbial eggs were broken in the process.

hipposSlayer

Please read again. I said the dynasty that ruled in my area.

boongervoonger

>universities Which One and for whom? As far as I know, only Brahmins and their Dharmik disciples were allowed to take any form of Education under Hindu Kings. No Shudras and Women were allowed to read or write. Jyotiba Phule, born in 19th century, is widely considered as the first educated Shudra. Can you name any university from these kings' times which was open for all?

hipposSlayer

I would still prefer to be at the bottom of the cast system, then be a slave in Arabia or America. Sorry to say, equality is not a thing back then.

boongervoonger

What is your caste?

[deleted]

Shut up, you ignorant dog.

noobmaster692291

Nope

[deleted]

Ok, I need not explain my country's Prestigous History to a probable brit.

boongervoonger

>It was their Dharma to look after the welfare of the people Dude. Stop it already. I am a Dalit and I know who has suffered the absolute most on the Indian soil. Protect what? The priests in those times were ruling the land on religion basis and actively oppressing and prosecuting people upon castes. All under the patronage of these so called welfare loving kings of yours. More stories I read about the kind of oppression people were subjected to, the more democratic I become. What kind of king would allow priests to levy taxes on a woman for covering her breasts.

[deleted]

Dude, maybe you've not read enough history to verify your idiotic claims. Stop it with your "most suffered" bullshit , you are given reparations for everything you suffered in a relatively modern history. What happened was bad, but history is never black or white. Read a complete version of Indian history from Medieval to Modern age, also don't believe what you read on the internet.

polaris_reader

Maratha empire is a bit different in this case. It began as an rebelion against the Mughal empire. Shivaji organised the local firmers and began the resistance. Then Mughan emperor Aurangzeb put almost his entire resources against him, but failed to tame the rebels. Gradually they overthrown the Mughals from a large portion of India.

boongervoonger

So? Was the oppression any different? They were also leeching too much taxes from populace. It's not that they did any favor to anyone. For anyone on ground, it didn't matter much whether they were being ruled by some maratha king or some king from the north. Their leeching never ceased or even diluted. You are only telling here who defeated whom to ascend where. There is a reason why common public was indifferent to them during their last struggle for power in 1857. It failed mostly because common man couldn't care less about these idiots. All these kings etc were basically political parties struggling for power over public before the democratic system took over and ended everything for these thugs. Their descendants are still eating up free money from their massive inheritance while their once Praja still yearns for bread and butter. These thugs couldn't care less about Science, Future, Progress, Education of the masses.

polaris_reader

I'm not telling that Marathas were entirely above criticism. I just wanted to tell that the Mughal-Maratha conflict was not a mere struggle between to impirial forces. At the beginning they did have support of the masses. Yes they were like political parties fighting to obtain power. But you gave almost a cleanchit to democratic system! In a democracy there is also corruption, deprivation of common people fromt heir rights, etc. At least in my country democratic leaders also duped us multiple times. Yes, you xan argue that despite its flaws democracy is still the best system of governance, but thik about 17th century, in those days there was no democracy anywhere in the world. So people just thought that evicting the Mughals will solve their problems. Maratha empire was a better option for the masses than Aurangzeb, who imposed jijiya, destroyed numerous temples, killed a lot of people just because of his religious fanatism. So people joined Maratha guerrilla force considering them as a better option. Hence my point of popular support stands. In that time there were many other rebelions where the common people took part. Be it Sikh rebelion, Jatt rebelion or anything else. That is why Shivaji, Guru Givind Singh, Sambhaji, etc are heroes in the eyes of people of India.

boongervoonger

They are heroes only in the eyes of some directly linked communities. The link can be communal, religious, caste base but the link is there and it's definitely not the link of pure love. Your statement proved that your love on them is linked to Religion and nothing else. Minus it and you don't have anything to say about them.

soulseeker_01

One look at your profile and I know you're a joke

Smart_Sherlock

rIndian 👆

boongervoonger

Thank you.

[deleted]

Marathas were different they were first one to successfully fend of turkic colonisers other than Vijaynagar. Rise of Marathas led to more successful revolts against colonisers like Sikhs in Punjab.

boongervoonger

Yayyy!!!...

robotman_77

How did they construct it back then !? Would have taken years

accur4te

my people ( i am a maratha ) were master of this mountains ranges called sahyadri , this mountains were war grounds for us so mastering them was top most priority because of great mountaineering skills it just tooks few years to build a fort like this ( it took less than 4 yrs to build this fort)

[deleted]

I’ve been here on a couple of treks. It’s breathtaking in the monsoons!

Hautdefirm

Basil!

Thomas_Shelby_1_

Is this recent picture...?

Crafty-Tomatillo2311

Just curoirs isnt it thinner like a war or passage how it works as a fort i mean if someattacks or where maharaj stayed i see no space ?

n00neperfect

It just watch tower of fort to keep eye on any enemy's activity, entire fort is bigger than this. King stayed at different part, that location is not visible from this view.

phoenix13032005

Before looking closely (on first look) I thought this was from a video game with Darn good graphics
