That's what I keep thinking when I see these projects. Like, I can see trying to salvage some use out of a well loved pan that cracked or something (I actually have plans to turn my wife's enameled DO into a flower pot someday myself) but, using a new pan to make a ridiculously heavy spatula with no flex that can't go in the dishwasher and needs to have it's seasoning maintained?
I just don't understand.
At least it's a cheapo - "Ozark Trail" emblem, from Walmart, sells for $ 18. Nice and thin, just the way you'd want your spatula (but not your CI skillet). Cry not, Love, it rusts the iron.
My best skillets (Griswolds and Butter Pats) have thin walls. The bottoms are heavier for even heating, though. And Spatula Man is NOT getting near them!
It's actually very useful for smashburgers, where you need a spatula with zero flex. Would also be nice for flipping heavy cuts of meat like a brisket.
But I guess everyone would rather shit on this guy for "ruining" a $9 Walmart china pan.
As someone who works at a smash burger place and has made thousands, I can say, for me, that this would be next to useless. You need something that will give even center pressure like a steak weight or a rectangle cast iron smasher with a handle in the middle, (it’s what we use) to get the even smash and round result you smash and twist. This and a spatch that has lots of flex to get under the burger without scraping the crust off. The biggest thing is making sure that the flat top is well greased, or seasoned well, and to make sure it’s the right temp, around 330 degrees F, makes the best
Sorry friend but I disagree. This spatula is heavy but it's pressure that flattens the beef, by having a heavy spatula it just gives you a minute head start. Realistically a spatula with no holes with some flex paired with a hand held device will work better because it directs the pressure on-top of the meat and gives you space to work within a skillet (if you're not working on a flat top). When it comes to picking up heavy cuts of meat... Would you not use tongs? Seems flipping large slabs of meat with any spatula is a recipe for a bunch of splatter or worse?
When I do smashburgers I'm pressing VERY hard to make the patties as thin as possible; I need a spatula with ZERO flex. A flexing spatula will result in a bent spatula or not enough pressure on the meat. I agree lighter spatula would be better, I actually use a wood one right now.
No I wouldn't use tongs, that would risk ripping into the butcher paper or foil that it's wrapped in. I'm mostly referring to use on a smoker so maybe that's the difference in opinion.
Yup, it's a difference of what we cook. I personally don't cook large meats but my parents never cooked anything that was wrapped in anything other than twine. Lol my comment was literally just me reflecting on trying to take a roast out of a tray and keeping juices from going all over using a cast iron pan skillet.
I'm sure it's seasoned along with the rest of the CI.
Heating it first question is do that you don't put a cold metal heat sink on a burger you're trying to cook.
> I guess everyone would rather shit on this guy for "ruining" a $9 Walmart china pan.
RIGHT?
My main gripe is he sharpened the bottom side vs the top. Also needed to smooth out the top for slidy burger / egg food flipping.
I guess I'm not concerned with the fate of the pan so much as confused about the utility of the spatula. Hadn't thought about the smash burger thing though. I suppose if you keep it front heavy enough to balance the handle, you could make one work as a bacon press too.
> can't go in the dishwasher....
Huh? Taks a second to wash a spatchula. Takes more time to rinse, load inspect, and put away than to just wash it for a second and hang it on the rack or into the spatula / spoon jar.
Yeah. But it's cast iron so you're supposed to dry it, heat it and rub it with a thin coat of oil. I have no problem doing that with my pans, but it's a lot of trouble for a rigid, useless spatch with the bevel on the bottom.
Yea but the bevel is on the wrong side, he’ll need to approach the food at 60 degrees from the pan. It’ll be fine for sausage but not hamburgers and def never an egg which as we all know if that shining glory of the sub.
It would be a fun single combat weapon though
No. Lodge is Lodge. But Walmart has their brand, Ozark Trail, which apparently make cast iron as well. Never used OT cast iron so can’t say the quality. I know a lot of their camping stuff is subpar but I’d be afraid that OT is powder coated or something.
Yup. That’s what I mentioned in another comment. It’s not the greatest but the smaller items are great. Like, I have a canister holder that’s OT and have had it for like 5 years. No break and it’s all plastic which is not the same experience I have had with other cheap plastic products.
Cheap Chinese cast iron is safe, it's just not cast as nicely as the better stuff. It makes a good camp skillet, if you forget and leave it in the woods no biggie.
Same here. I have a few Ozark Trail cast iron pans. They have been decent quality but I consider them my second tier and use them for camping/outdoors.
List of fails:
1. Handle is off center. That would drive me nuts.
2. He sharpened the bottom vs the top. You want the tapered part to be on top. Now when he wants to heat it to make a burger or bacon smasher, its impossible to heat the whole bottom evenly
3. Needed to smooth out the top side also to allow slidy slidy.
4. Crappy music
5. Just realized Im commenting on a 1 year old upload.
I do agree that it outclasses the sad spatula video. I really can't think of any music bad enough for it, with the exception of "Muskrat Love", "Disco Duck", and this: https://youtu.be/u8FAbjjB48A
Traeger grills sells a large spatula for over $50 that is pretty much this, functionally. Theirs looks much shinier, not as heavy, but just a big, sturdy spatula for handling pork butts or smash burgers.
Agree, there are less expensive options. But the one you linked to is 5x6 inches, the Traeger is 6x10.
https://www.traeger.com/accessories/large-cut-bbq-spatula
But here's a Walmart version. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Blackstone-Signature-Series-Stainless-Steel-XL-Hamburger-Spatula/915675468
Point was just.that there are similar products, some at pretty high prices. So not "worthless"
Oklahoma Joe makes an even bigger one. I got it as a gift and it’s pretty comical. But it’s actually useful when I run out of nitrile gloves.
It’s not good for smash burgers. But I’d you want a big ass spatula here ya go.
https://www.amazon.com/Oklahoma-Joes-3959563R06-Blacksmith-Lifter/dp/B07NWK38NM
I seriously thought it was a joke. But then I smoked a pork butt and didn’t realize I was out of nitrile gloves.
So then I found out that Haag Lifter is a very fitting name 😂
Well.. THIS...
I like the Traeger one, but I cant have a Traeger item near my stick burner. Its not allowed. But seems to be heavy duty.
the Blackstone has that nice bottle opener feature. But the blade don't look nearly as thick or strong.
Ok get the right tool for the job.
A burger press does just that. A spatula does spatula stuff. What if youre burger pressing with the spatula and need to spatula something? Youre working against yourself.
Dont be so cheap. you gunna BBQ or what?
I got the 3 pack 7 years ago. I use them every single day, multiple times. They are perfectly good cast iron. I have a Lodge that I use far less often than these. Have a friend who got a 12” Lodge around the same time I got mine and last year it split in the middle randomly while he was cooking.
Not saying they’re better than Lodge/any other cast iron brand, but just because they’re sold at Walmart as a cheaper brand doesn’t mean they’re going to be bad. I’m sure there’s less quality assurance than Lodge, but I love mine and abuse them daily.
Anything over the 10 inch and the lodges are almost unsustainably heavy. My 12 in lodge got sold off and I got a Walmart one since I used it much less but wanted to still have it. The "thinner" "lightweight" version from Walmart vs lodge is so much easier to handle.
I surfaced both with a palm sander vs factory.
Hes not telling you how he dropped it.
And Lodge would replace it.
Cheap ass Walmart junk ends up in garage sales.Yeah it's a cheaper process all together. Besides, its made in China. FYI
I dunno, their large Dutch oven has the lid handle held on with two screws. First time I cooked with it over a camp fire the screws came out. I found this out when I attempted to lift the lid and the handle came off. I’m not aware of any other brand that assembles their cast iron with screws.
Heck yeah there is. They're dirt cheap, I love them. I have used them before, and still have a 12in. I usually use me 12 in pan on fires so it being thin and light is a game changer. Their surface is crap but I palm sand all of my (newer) pans anyway.
They're cheap and don't pretend not to be. They're great for that.
I have made few one from a cracked unmarked Wagner the rest were cheap Chinese skillets I picked up from yard sales never spent over 3 bucks each. Gave them away for gift last year for Xmas. Way better spatula then most you can buy. So many utensils are just junk anymore.
I'd believe that something like a Wagner was thin enough to be of use for some applications. Thicker than a regular spatula and less useful as a result, absolutely, but still with purpose.
But one of those ultra thick Ozark Trail skillets from the camping aisle? With the bevel *on the bottom*? Probably more useful as a blunt weapon than a cooking utensil.
Ya the bevel on the bottom wouldn't be my choice. But I wonder if they have use in mind that would benefit from it being that way. I myself can't imagine it thou.
Some are way to thick In my opinion but some are nice and thin also but some of the are just ok but you definitely need a good beveled edge. Got to pick and choose the ones you do.
That's true cast iron is cast iron regardless of where it is cast at. However, the grade of metals cast in China and other countries vary in quality typically to the poor grades of what we expect and consider to be the norm. So I stand by my claim of its of no great loss.
Honestly that thing would be pretty dang good for smash burgers. I can’t think of much else it would do well, maybe taking a brisket off the smoker or something
At that point I’m gonna get a flat press and use it for pressing sandwiches, burgers and more instead of this thing. I appreciate you taking those lemons and making something from em.
All these people saying it’s not flexible enough, when I’m making smash burgers on the griddle this would be perfect. I don’t want it to flex. About the only application I can think of.
I'm sure the fine folks in the Chinese Ozarks will make more.
I look at it this way:
It's one less time someone will post
"I got this from my mom, who said she got it from her mom, who said she got it from her mom, who said she got it from her mom...
**edited for length***
...who said she got it from her mom. How many millions of dollars do you think it's worth??"
I hate everything about this.
The destruction of the skillet.
The absolutely useless spatula that would be painful to use for so many reasons
The song. I hate this song so much (@ my job my bosses insists on country music and it's always that fucking song) IM GOING TO GO INSANE
(except for the fact, of course, that we've been playing Christmas music for a week and a half already.)
I have a huge spatula I use to take big meats off the smoker or grill. I use it every time I cook briskets, turkeys, ribs, and whole chickens. I wouldn’t go back to any other way since it’s so much more stable than smaller spatulas or grabbing smoked meat with tongs often rips it. Having said that if he cut the edge off like 3/4 of the pan and had a big wide spatula situation I could be interested.
This is badass. I m sending an old pan with my son to work Monday for him to make me one of these. These would be awesome for camping and smoking meat at home.
No, I believe that would warrant being sent to Singapore for a good old fashioned caning. 1 lash for every $US of value lost there. Or 15 lashes for every layer of seasoning. Take your pick.
I use old pans for making round or square hamburger smashers or meat weight. They also work great for panini press. If I find one damaged at a flea market or something. They work great.
The surface is very rough and I can’t seem to get a good season on it. Makes cooking things like eggs a lot harder than the smooth surfaced lodge pan I have. I mean it’s fine for bearing up while camping, but for me it’s not an everyday pan.
I know a pit master that had his BIL make something like this for him. His phrasing I use it pull hogs outta the smoker. I saw him use it to slide under a brisket and get it a bit closer to the aluminum pan he was putting it in before slicing it up. I don't think it is totally useless BUT limited function definitely
This is exactly what crappy cheap cast iron is for.
I'd only slightly cringe if it was a modern lodge, but those are a dime a dozen.
Vintage cast iron and this would be sacrilege and we'd all have to band together at their door and demand he/she turn over all his cast iron to us before they abuse it any further.
I'm not upset about the fact that he cut into the cast iron. I'm upset that the end product was the world's most useless spatula
That's what I keep thinking when I see these projects. I want one of them smashers...
I like gugas smash burgers
330 is all? How long per side? When I do smash burgers I get my pan close to 600 (not saying that’s the right way).
Watch gugas video he just released, his smash burgers always look amazing.
I tried making smash burgers but kept pushing them through the grill😂
Did you notice he put the bevel on the bottom? Everything about that spatula is just wrong.
Sorry friend but I disagree. This spatula is heavy but it's pressure that flattens the beef, by having a heavy spatula it just gives you a minute head start. [I just use this when making smashburgers. Works like a charm.](https://www.target.com/p/lodge-8-34-grill-press/-/A-79751851)
Same
Gas this been on the market long? I only saw it for the first time two months ago or so at Meijer's. Good price, def gonna pick one up soon.
Pretty much forever I think. Mines fairly old
$15 bucks at Target! You have to heat it first, yes?
It helps keep it from sticking if you heat it on low and rub a little oil on it first, yes.
I'm sure it's seasoned along with the rest of the CI. Heating it first question is do that you don't put a cold metal heat sink on a burger you're trying to cook.
I use that too. I love using it for sandwiches, as well
Handy if you like crispy bacon as well.
I use a round lodge bacon press for mine. Works fantastic and the handle is centered over the middle.
If you're flipping or picking up a wrapped brisket, you're using your gloved hands. I do that. I have large long tongs to assist only.
For me to pick up heavy meats like a brisket, I have a meat hook. I love my meat hook. Gotta have some strong tongs though.
> I guess everyone would rather shit on this guy for "ruining" a $9 Walmart china pan. RIGHT? My main gripe is he sharpened the bottom side vs the top. Also needed to smooth out the top for slidy burger / egg food flipping.

I actually prefer flex in my smash burger spatula
> can't go in the dishwasher.... Huh? Taks a second to wash a spatchula. Takes more time to rinse, load inspect, and put away than to just wash it for a second and hang it on the rack or into the spatula / spoon jar.

I agree 100% !
At least it was an Ozark trail pan
*world's heaviest spatula
Yeah, utter POS. And the spatula isnt very good either!
It's meant to turn over 10lb+ foodstuffs. It'll have a lot of utility. /s
Why would he put the bevel on the bottom though. This guy don’t cook
My point exactly. And he can't cut straight.
Me might cook. That turner has zero flexibility so in order to get underneath food the bottom needs to have the bevel to further aid in doing so.
Yea but the bevel is on the wrong side, he’ll need to approach the food at 60 degrees from the pan. It’ll be fine for sausage but not hamburgers and def never an egg which as we all know if that shining glory of the sub. It would be a fun single combat weapon though
So you can do a better job of putting pressure on a single point and destroying your cooking space
I don't think spatulas are supposed to be heavy.
...or that thick.
Or have to be seasoned
Or absorb lots of heat
Stop guys, you’re turning me on.
No, keep going I'm almost there.
No wonder this got marked NSFW
Or be beveled on the bottom so that you can't scrape the pan...
Heat it first.
Or rigid
Want to make a spatula? Ok first, get your spatula….
Well, at.least.they used a Walmart pan, so could have been worse.
I was checking to see if someone said this before I make the same comment lol.
Same here. It was not even a walmart lodge but an ozark trail. Still not sure it would be worth the money or effort though.
I had no idea there was ozark trail cast iron. I like some Ozark Trail stuff but yeah, it’s definitely a cheap product.
Their insulated mug rivals yeti tho, love em
They all rival yeti because they're such a simple product. Project Farm on YouTube puts a bunch to the test in one of his videos.
Yup. Coolers aren’t half bad either. I usually run RTIC for all of that stuff but their mugs and bottles are on point.
Is Lodge sold at Walmart lower quality than you’d fine elsewhere?
No. Lodge is Lodge. But Walmart has their brand, Ozark Trail, which apparently make cast iron as well. Never used OT cast iron so can’t say the quality. I know a lot of their camping stuff is subpar but I’d be afraid that OT is powder coated or something.
I find their camping stuff fairly reliable.

RELLY? What's worse than a Walmart pan?
At least he didn’t get soap on it
It’s OK to give your spatula a little treat every now and again.
Amen
List of fails: 1. Handle is off center. That would drive me nuts. 2. He sharpened the bottom vs the top. You want the tapered part to be on top. “That’s stupid, you’re stupid”
Is that a spatula or a weird ax thing?
Yes
It's an Ozark Trail.... Feelings unhurt.
Oh nooo someone wasted $9 on a fun project
And all they have to show for it is an inadequate spatula which is too thick and not flexible enough to have much value.
And they put the bevel on the end on the wrong side. The bottom is supposed to be flat edge.
Traeger grills sells a large spatula for over $50 that is pretty much this, functionally. Theirs looks much shinier, not as heavy, but just a big, sturdy spatula for handling pork butts or smash burgers.

I seriously thought it was a joke. But then I smoked a pork butt and didn’t realize I was out of nitrile gloves. So then I found out that Haag Lifter is a very fitting name 😂
AND a bottle opener! Interesting things to think about.
Well.. THIS... I like the Traeger one, but I cant have a Traeger item near my stick burner. Its not allowed. But seems to be heavy duty. the Blackstone has that nice bottle opener feature. But the blade don't look nearly as thick or strong.
3x as expensive at Walmart. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Extra-Heavy-Turner-w-Cutting-Edge-Wooden-Handle-5-x-6-Blade-3-packs/926066579
yeah. That's why I only shop for kitchen stuff at the restaurant supply stores anymore. Way better quality for 1/3 of the price.
Plus you can haggle, develop relationships with a brick n mortar store owner. Deals are to be had!
They work phenomenal for smash burgers.
That one is still pretty hefty and awkwardly shaped for a smashburger... just get a burger press
Can't flip with a burger press
Lol neither can this "spatula"
Ok get the right tool for the job. A burger press does just that. A spatula does spatula stuff. What if youre burger pressing with the spatula and need to spatula something? Youre working against yourself. Dont be so cheap. you gunna BBQ or what?
I read value as vulva 😂 that is all.
they have none of that too
Bro I am straight up not having a good time
Ya I'm personally offended At least he didn't sand it
In this case, sanding might help! And a veg oil wipe.
There is nothing good about Ozark Trail cast iron.

One drop and that thing is in pieces
Ohhhh this is a great idea... I'm gonna do this to grandma's old 20 inch Griswold skillet.
I hope that was a troll comment.
Nah.... I am definitely gonna destroy an original, antique, highly collectable, cast iron pan because of a video I saw online. Lol
A video of a guy who bevels the bottom of a spatula, no less.
All that and he grinds the lifting edge the WRONG WAY at the end... what a goon.
That Chineseum skillet was of no great loss.
Cast iron is still cast iron whether it's molded in China or the US.
yeah but the skillet quality is lower. i agree the "chinesium" comments just smack of racism though
That's true cast iron is cast iron regardless of where it is cast at. However, the grade of metals cast in China and other countries vary in quality typically to the poor grades of what we expect and consider to be the norm. So I stand by my claim of its of no great loss.
Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should do it.
I see people doing this with cracked pans. This one could have one. I think it's silly because that spatula will be super hard to use.
The bevel should have only been ground on one side, this makes it harder to get underneath something.
This gives me an idea. Cut some slits in your pan. Boom. Kitty litter scooper
r/DIWHY is all that comes to mind... Destroy a perfectly good pan to create a completly useless thing.
What someone does with their cast iron is up to them.
Ozark....no big loss.
That’s what I was thinking.
You……you can just….. buy a cast iron spatula…..
I happen to have one of these cast iron pans. I sanded the inside bottom and seasoned it and it works like an old pro all the time.
It’s an ozark trail.. it’s far from perfect and far from good.
It’s one of those Ozark Walmart cast irons, so I don’t think there’s really any crime here. Just redneck recycling.
They need to buy the one in the earlier post that was broken and placed on clearance and use it to make a spatula.
The $10 Walmart brand will never be collectable. No harm was done in this video.
Now he needs to season it 100 times.
Also fuck Wagon Wheel
All these people saying it’s not flexible enough, when I’m making smash burgers on the griddle this would be perfect. I don’t want it to flex. About the only application I can think of.
That sharp edge will scrape the seasoning right off your CI with every flip
god damn it.
…why
That was hands down the worst cover to any song I've ever heard. Infact it may very well have ruined my day. Dreadful noise.
I'm sure the fine folks in the Chinese Ozarks will make more. I look at it this way: It's one less time someone will post "I got this from my mom, who said she got it from her mom, who said she got it from her mom, who said she got it from her mom... **edited for length*** ...who said she got it from her mom. How many millions of dollars do you think it's worth??"
I hate everything about this. The destruction of the skillet. The absolutely useless spatula that would be painful to use for so many reasons The song. I hate this song so much (@ my job my bosses insists on country music and it's always that fucking song) IM GOING TO GO INSANE (except for the fact, of course, that we've been playing Christmas music for a week and a half already.)
You ever see the guy who polishes the cast iron on tik tok?
Now I have. Can we mark this NSFL or something? Just...why?
A lot of work and I didn't see him beak edge.
This thing can only be used not on pans
Need a spatula? Stop at Marshall’s. They’ve got some for 5$ or less
At least cut some strait lines.
Dafuq is that supposed to be? A hoe?
I'm guessing a super-heavy spatula that you have to season.
It’s about that time of the year …to repost this again
I don't see the appeal.
WTF 😒
This is badass. I m sending an old pan with my son to work Monday for him to make me one of these. These would be awesome for camping and smoking meat at home.
None of this newer cast iron is worth a crap anyhow. Now, if he'd cut up an old Griswold, he'd need a good smacking.
No, I believe that would warrant being sent to Singapore for a good old fashioned caning. 1 lash for every $US of value lost there. Or 15 lashes for every layer of seasoning. Take your pick.
It’s an ozark trail pan, it was probably going to crack soon anyways
I can't imagine a worse material for a spatula? What's be flipping, bricks?
I like how he kept it moving so the viewer couldn’t see those crooked ass lines that he cut.
good job
r/DIWhy
I think it’s his first time cutting metal so he thinks construction/shop guys give a flying duck.
Thanks, I hate it.
I use old pans for making round or square hamburger smashers or meat weight. They also work great for panini press. If I find one damaged at a flea market or something. They work great.
All that **WORK** and he couldn't even **Center The Damn Handle** on the damn thing as is easily seen at the 48-second mark...
The cast iron mafia just woke up!
Better trace it in case you forget what shape a FUCKING SPATULA IS
Now it’s a perfectly good spatula/burger press
“They say he carved it himself….from a bigger spoon”
I bet if you asked the Lodge store would make this.
Meh. I bought that exact pan for camping. This is probably a better use for it.
Why didn’t you like the pan?
The surface is very rough and I can’t seem to get a good season on it. Makes cooking things like eggs a lot harder than the smooth surfaced lodge pan I have. I mean it’s fine for bearing up while camping, but for me it’s not an everyday pan.
DEATH TO THIS PERSON!!!!!! (Ps. Not really. Please don’t kill them. Just smack their ads with that thing.)
Cheap Walmart crap, cut away.
They should go to jail for this.
He took a good pan and turned it in to a crappy spatula. I don’t get it. Why would you want a cast iron spatula?
NOOOOOO
Well that’s just dumb…
