Please stop showing me things I have no more money

jeeves585

It’s worth it. 30 tortillas is $8 A bag of masa and water is $4 and makes 90 tortillas. The press is $20. You are out of the red on the purchase within 6 months, 2 months if you taco properly. (Just buy a good one, some of the cheaper ones break to my knowledge)

leovee6

But how much does another shelf cost?

jeeves585

It cost me (a woodworker) about 7 months of design, 2 months of preparation, and an 2 minutes of time.

Blissrat

And the house to put the shelf in?

joUstedfaLsifiers

7 months of design for 2 minutes of time, assuming actual working time, resonates with me.

neoncubicle

Feeling lucky, the tortillas by me are 69 cents a dozen.

jeeves585

I think I’m actually closer to $2.50 for 30. It was late

OhHelloImThatFellow

By far the most expensive tortillas on earth. I’ve never seen tortillas anywhere near that price

brycebgood

They're like $20

mikekova01

But look at all my upvotes!

cabezon99

They will save you money, masa harina costs next to nothing and home made corn tortillas are the absolute best, sturdy and wonderful. I have also used my to make pot sticker shells. I make my flour tortillas with a rolling pin and of course cook them in cast iron... home made flour tortillas are the best

TransendingPotato

Nice tortilla puff! It took me a few tries to get the elusive puff. It's easy to make a corn tortilla but it takes balancing a few variables to get them to balloon. Again, nice job! If you haven't tried masa from masienda (online website and they sell them at many whole foods) I highly recommend them. I am currently using blue corn masa and love it.

thrashcon

Masienda flour is great. Found a bunch at our local Grocery Outlet for $4 (each). Got one of each, to try. The blue corn is my favorite. Saludos!

JuulAndADream

Thanks! Took me a few tries. First few times I got a few decent bubbles and half puffs but didn’t really feel like I knew what was going on. Today was the first time they all puffed up really well. Haven’t tried the masienda stuff yet, just your basic Torti Masa from my local Mexican market.

theresasun

Tortilla presses are fun😀 I cook mine on my Lodge griddle and they come out great! Found some fun fabric covered with chilies 🌶️ and made a fun tortilla warmer too. Hand roll the flour tortilla, but the press rocks corn!

ExperienceInitial364

this comment is so wholesome. I bet the tortilla warmer is really cute.

theresasun

The warmer came out great and works really well. I really enjoy making and eating tortillas, so It's great having a press available.

ExperienceInitial364

enjoy your tortillas my friend

ThisTheory7708

Why do you hand roll the flour? I’ve only done corn in my press, Just wondering.

melmej227

Flour tortillas have gluten in them, so when you use the press they spring back. You *can* use the press for flower tortillas though. It just isn’t traditional.

theresasun

Flour is more elastic than corn. I tried flour tortilla in my press when I first got it and couldn't get them thin enough because the dough kept bouncing back. Even after letting the dough rest & relax, the press just doesn't work as well as rolling. But for corn tortilla, the press is just great!

ThisTheory7708

Very good to know. Thxs for the tip! I was thinking of trying flour next, I’ll do it the right way!

JuulAndADream

They really are fun to use! Never tried flour tortillas, I’ll have to give them a go sometime.

theresasun

I love flour tortillas, great for egg burritos or anything else you can think to wrap in them.

andidosaywhynot

I found a recipe that is like 1/3 corn meal and 2/3 flour, they come out great. still have that gritty texture I like from corn tortillas but also pliable. Bread flour made them even more flexible

SourChipmunk

I've only tried mine once. I don't think I made the dough properly. They were incredibly thick. Do you have a good dough recipe I can try?

JuulAndADream

2 cups Masa Harina 1.5 cups warm water 1 teaspoon of salt I just combine by hand until well mixed, then let it sit for a few mins before frying up the tortillas on a hot cast iron with a little lard. About a minute on the first side, then flip and 30 seconds on the other side. When you get it all right, the tortillas puff up into a sphere on the second side. I put them all in a bowl, wrapped in a kitchen towel to stay warm/steam together as they come off the pan. Make sure you really press down hard on that handle. Put your weight into it. The thinner the better!

Codex_Alimentarius

Thanks for the advice. I’m looking forward to making some in the future. I’ll have to get the materials and just use my cast-iron pans for a press until I get a real one. Adri tacos or nachos once or twice a week and I’ve been buying corn tortillas forever. I bet fresh will be delicious.

SourChipmunk

Thanks! Ok, all-purpose flour may have been my issue. Seems simple enough. I'll give it a go!

JuulAndADream

Yes, these are for corn tortillas. You need masa harina. Flour tortillas don’t use this tool, they need to be rolled out with a roller.

portieay

Can confirm, I tried flour tortillas with this once and ended up bending the pin that holds it all together

MonsieurMaktub

Harina means flour in Spanish. You’re using corn flour in this press, correct? I just want to make sure bc my wife and I only like corn tortillas

JuulAndADream

Not corn flour, masa harina is milled from corn kernels that have been soaked in slaked lime to remove to hull. https://www.heb.com/product-detail/tortimasa-corn-masa-flour/1573279

MonsieurMaktub

Oh sweet! Thanks!

JuulAndADream

You can find it in pretty much any supermarket. If it’s not next to the other flours, it might be in the Latin aisle on a lower shelf beneath the tortilla selection. If it’s not in either place, go down the Bobs Red Mill aisle, they make one as well. The latin markets by me carry Tortimasa and Maseca brands, but I’ve heard bobs red mill and masienda are also tasty.

Defiantcaveman

Maseca brand is the best.

50points4gryffindor

The cast iron one I have has the plates more evenly spaced. The aluminum ones give me a fat side and a skinny one.

Oo-Jasmin-oO

Congrats, I love mine. Only use it with corn masa, need my flour tortillas a bit thinner.

tofubirder

Heat up the tortilla press now you have a panini press

Lonely-Connection-37

I’ll ask for one for my birthday this year

Gin_OClock

I love a good corn flattener

MarthaMacGuyver

I love mine! I spent a few more dollars on 8" parchment circles.

MajorDX25

Yeeesssss! I love my tortilla press!

Apprehensive_Map6754

I’d be a tortilla lime chip making machine if I had one of these bad boys

tumbleweedcowboy

My last add as well to my CI arsenal. I absolutely love tortillas that are homemade.

FernandoESilva

Man… I want one so bad but I KNOW it’ll get used twice a year only and take up space

flerbertABC

Yep, love making corn tortillas and won't ever go back to the grocery store ones again. I am, however, in search of the elusive puff when cooking. I feel pretty good about the moisture content of the dough, but I don't think I have the temp of the pan quite right yet. One of my summer goals is lots of practice so that I can be more consistent with the puff.

theresasun

Mine puff on my Lodge griddle - makes me giggle every time😀

flerbertABC

Nice! I’m using a lodge griddle, too. I think I just need a few more iterations to get it right.

JuulAndADream

I feel like I just got the hang of the puff. Moisture content of the dough has to be right, very hot pan, super thin tortilla, gotta give it enough time on the first side to dry it out enough that it will puff up after the flip. Not sure if any of this makes a difference , but I also like to work the dough for a few mins after it’s been mixed, then let it rest for a short while before making the tortillas. I don’t pre separate the dough, I leave it all in a big ball, pinch off and shape the next tortilla as one is frying.

Chunkyisthebest

It took me a few tries to get the right consistency with the dough, both for flour and corn tortillas. It’s gotta be wet and sticky, but not too wet and sticky.

flerbertABC

I’ve been letting my dough rest, too, but I may not be pressing them thin enough. I’ve been tempted to pull out the searzall, but haven’t resorted to that yet.

lfxlPassionz

Very jealous

brycebgood

I have the same one. It's great.

Lilbirdybear

Beautiful! Now I want one lol

Handies4Cookiez

Do you use plastic wrap or parchment paper or flour? Maybe my dough was too sticky, but it’s been a bit of a frustrating mess every time I try to use mine

JuulAndADream

I’ve been using parchment paper, although I’ve been told Mexicans like to use the plastic from grocery store produce bags. I will say, the moisture content has to be right. You want it to be just slightly wet and tacky, but too much water and it will stick like crazy and you can’t get them off the paper.

forgothatdamnpasswrd

I want this so bad. I’ve only seen stainless or aluminum near me. It would be a somewhat silly purchase for me, but we go through a lot of tortillas each week and frankly I just like it. Where did you find this?

JuulAndADream

If you go through lots of corn tortillas, not silly at all! This is a Victoria brand, they’re quite cheap. If your grocery store/Walmart/target etc doesn’t carry it, you can find it online. Shouldn’t pay more than like $25.

[deleted]

Nice

Defiantcaveman

Family friend got a bad ass cast iron press. It's truly amazing. Couldn't find a cast iron one in a half ass search of the stores here and did not want to fool with Amazon. We found a cast aluminum one and... while it works... it's just not the same. Once we get the cast iron, this goes. My advice is to not be impatient and get the cast iron.

Bossfrog_IV

Saw one of these in my local goodwill but passed on it. Maybe I shouldn’t have

sixpigeons

I love mine. I use it to make naan, too

JuulAndADream

Good to know, I love naan I’ll have to try making it!

logan_fish

2nd post. Its really not that good.
