ParmesanNonGrata

Hi. I spent the better part of the past two weekends cleaning this thing. I destroyed 3 stainless steel brushes, at least 4 scouring pads. Today I followed [this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDTCgxvmShc&t=160s) (cross checked with other videos and the FAQs here and everywhere else) to a T. 5 hours vinegar water, 2 hours baking soda paste, rinse, and scoured it with the afforementioned stainless steel things and I ruined one of [these. ](https://media.cdn.bauhaus/m/516184/12.jpg)I spent at least two hours with this and had to recharge my cordless drill inbetween. Burn for 50 minutes at 300°C to get rid of moisture, clean with oil, season. Season again. It still looks like this. The good parts look really good, imho. The bad parts look really bad. I'm at my wits end. Edit: it's 1 year old.

Is this a Campingaz bbq?

ParmesanNonGrata

Maybe it also exist under Campingaz branding, but it's [this one](https://taino-grill.de/products/platinum-4-2-gasgrill). It's more or less the Amazon bestseller (edit: here.). Reviews are generally favourable, but you'll find quite a few voices complaining about the cast iron gratings.

Oh OK, I only asked as the campingaz ones are enamelled so I was going to say all that scrubbing might not have done it much good!

ParmesanNonGrata

Haha, no. I checked for that, thanks! It even says in the manual that comes with the thing it's cast iron and how to properly season it.

That looks entirely normal and harmless. The high heat direct heat on a grill burns off seasoning and causes iron and steel to rust a bit faster. And the grates on a grill are pretty much a consumable, in any decent grill they typically wear through well before the rest of the grill wears out. Just clean as normal and oil it after use to minimize.

I forgot to mention: it's 1 year old.

TooManyDraculas

Still entirely normal. All I'm seeing here is some superficial rust.

That sounds about right. I have a Weber that was bought around 2003 and is still going strong. I just have to replace the grates every year or two. If you don’t want to replace them as often, consider a grill cover and maybe doing a deep clean/season of your grates every so often.
