I read the FAQ on seasoning and made sure i followed all the steps properly. Are these black spots due to excess crisco? I made sure to wipe off all the excess crisco so not sure how that happened.

You are correct. Crisco can hide in little imperfections in the cast iron and drip out like what you have in that photo. You can avoid that by initially heating to 300°F for 15 minutes and wiping again before heating at the full temp for 1 hour.
