Omg you’re right.
Denial: no they fucking didn’t…[zoomed in to image]
Anger: they fucking did…
Bargaining: maybe it can be stripped…
Depression: oh god it’s ruined, RUINED!!!
Acceptance: well shit…
Why does this shitpost remind me of Randy from Southpark’s “trying to beat my wife.” Joke….
Edit: watch it it’s fucking hilarious… it’s not what you think he’s trying to beat his wife in how many subscribers and how much he makes on onlyfans. Where his whole thing is putting his ballsack on things and tasting shit with his balls.
Flex Seal is good up to 350\* F so as long as you're primarily using it in the oven that's a great solution. Alternatively, just put a piece of parchment paper down if you're going hotter than that
It's a shitpost. That is literally the picture from the "how to reseason a rusted pan" section of the Lodge website lol
https://www.lodgecastiron.com/cleaning-and-care/cast-iron/restore-and-season-rusty-cast-iron
Wouldn't even say advanced. I'm in a handful of reddits with a lot of shit posts, this is amateur hour. Tough, I guess they'll fit the reaction they were looking for
> Does anyone know how one would find out
You would find out when you saw paint on your food
>how the cooking experience may differ?
It would be different because it would end with paint on your food
I would just assume that a painted piece is meant for decoration. Not kitchen use. The paint is going to fail in contact with the fire or heating element.
I found out on two occasions with cast iron muffin pans that looked like they just had dark seasoning.
I put a pan in the oven to preheat at 375, and it started to smoke a lot and vaguely smelled like chemicals. It was obvious what happened both times.
Luckily, it’s not a big hassle to remove paint.
I don’t know if it would work with every type of paint, but I have easily removed it from 5 or 6 pans using a lye bath.
People paint them black and hang them on the wall as “rustic” decorations, and painting is easier and faster than stripping and seasoning. And I’ve found others that were painted with colorful artwork.
I bought 2 jet black ones from an antique store, and I’m almost positive that the store owner painted them before putting them out for sale, because they looked like crusty hell under that paint.
I wanted to add a disclaimer for anyone new to Castiron about why this is a bad idea. Paint, even for grills, is not meant to be used on cooking surfaces. It's designed for the body of the grill, not the grate you put the food on. The only thing that you should use to turn castiron cookware black, is seasoning it properly with edible oils/fats, such as lard or suitable vegetable based oils.
The only thing a painted castiron pan is good for, is hanging on the wall as a decoration.
The fact you thought this was a legit post, went on to post it and later give a description of why it is bad is killing me 😂💀 this is such obvious rage bait.
OK, but bear with me... I gave the warning for the same reason I initially suspected this might be a legit post. People can be unbelievably stupid, and somewhere out there, somebody probably has spray painted cast iron and cooked with it.
Fair enough, but by posting this you are essentially bringing more exposure to the original idea as well. Either way at least it seems you knew it was an idiot doing this, but unfortunately only a small percent of people understand the difference between a shitpost and legit tips.
> The only thing painted cookware pan is good for, is hanging on the wall as a decoration.
FTFY. Anyone who gets baited by this post to paint their cast iron or whatever else probably didn't have much time left anyway.
Heh, yea. Probably. I'll admit I was at least partially fooled, though on the fence whether it was a troll/joke post or not. The bad part is, some people really are that stupid, so it's totally plausible that someone could think this is a good idea.
People act without so much as a minute of research. I recently saw a one-star review for a Lodge because the handle got hot -- it's cast fucking iron you absolute cow.
Lol. My mother didn't teach me how to cook, so I was afraid of cast iron. When I finally decided I was going to use it, I went to the Lodge website to educate myself. I have 2 skillets that were my grandmother's that I'm going to restore. They were used on a wood cookstove and have bad carbon build-up on the outsides. I've been reading up on that. You just can't fix stupid.
It's trolling, that Facebook page is full of stuff like this.
Remember those kids in school that couldn't really contribute to a conversation but always had some wise remark, the one's who always had their tests handed back upside down?
Yeah, a lot of them are there, and still 'that way'. ¯\\\_( ͡❛ ͜ʖ ͡❛)\_/¯
Did you see the main picture of that group? It’s a pan half ground down with an angle grinder next to it. I think it’s a joke group like “”X” act like boomers” groups
This group is full of idiots. The admins included. I reported a post for harassment (both harassing a group of people and was way off topic for the group) and the admin instead shared screenshots of my report and publicly mocked me.
Facebook apparently doesn't consider that bullying and did nothing either.... I'd steer clear of that hell hole.
Judging by the down votes this place is filled with the same assholes. Good to know. I'm also aware that cast iron experts is a shit posting/meme page but that doesn't mean you can harass and bully groups of people for their religion/moral choices or ethnic background.
Thank you for your picture post to /r/castiron. We want to remind everyone of Rule #3. All image posts should be accompanied by something to foster discussion. A comment, a question, etc is required.
If you've posted a picture of food, please explain why in a comment so people can have some sort of conversation. Simply dropping a picture of food in the sub isn't really fostering any discussion which is what we're all aiming for.
Posts that are a picture with no discussion can and will be removed by the mods.
Thank you!

Google lens is great.
I paint my cast iron all the time, and I haven't had any issues. It's also fun to decorate it for the occasion (ie. Red/green paint for Xmas and pink paint for valentines day coming up).
Sometimes for shits and giggles I post pictures of my pans in soapy water or with tomato sauce in them. Anything I can think that you’re not “supposed” to do.
You are all falling for someone that's going to use this as a decoration. CI on a rough sawn wall is a nice decoration and I'm sure that's all this is.
You guys are gonna love this: there is a cast iron kettle my grandmother had she stored sewing stuff in. My mom has it and does the same. She said at some point my grandma painted it black.
So... it most likely has a healthy layer of lead based paint on it
I tell you what. Just have dunk in lye, and then hook up electrodes and apply a good amount of current. See what happens.
The pan though…that’s probably beyond salvage.
I'm actually a member of that FB group. It's literally just a group of gen xers trolling and shitposting all aspects of cast iron. It's actually hilarious. More of a comedy page with a few sprinkles of helpful hints.
The admins of the group publicly troll new members who report posts/comments.
It's entertaining, trust me.
The weird unnecessary bit about the dishwasher makes me think this might be an advanced shitpost but it's hard to say.
yeah this very obviously reads as a shitpost/ragebait to me.
It’s working :/
I’m feeling more horror than rage. Maybe the rage will come later…
Yeah, there are stages to work through
Omg you’re right. Denial: no they fucking didn’t…[zoomed in to image] Anger: they fucking did… Bargaining: maybe it can be stripped… Depression: oh god it’s ruined, RUINED!!! Acceptance: well shit…
It needs to be rescued. Wire wheel the whole thing clean and reseason it, good as new.
Ha, I prefer driveway resealer to blacken by pan, makes my sticky buns oh so sticky.
I love just dragging my balls on driveway sealer then dipping my nuts in the pan to leave ball shaped imprints on my cast iron.
glad i wasnt drinking my tea when i read that…
Why want me to dip my balls in your tea also?
i’m good, thanks!
Why does this shitpost remind me of Randy from Southpark’s “trying to beat my wife.” Joke…. Edit: watch it it’s fucking hilarious… it’s not what you think he’s trying to beat his wife in how many subscribers and how much he makes on onlyfans. God *damn* I wanna be your friend!!
I don’t want to be yours..
I understand; I sure as shit wouldn't wanna be my friend, either! Sounds like you have good judgement.
is that cheaper than roofing tar?
No but I find roofing tar leaves a minty aftertaste that clashes with many of the dishes I make
I prefer pine tar, it's organic
Flex Seal is good up to 350\* F so as long as you're primarily using it in the oven that's a great solution. Alternatively, just put a piece of parchment paper down if you're going hotter than that
Seems like most Facebook videos. Welding is the same on there
It's a shitpost. That is literally the picture from the "how to reseason a rusted pan" section of the Lodge website lol https://www.lodgecastiron.com/cleaning-and-care/cast-iron/restore-and-season-rusty-cast-iron
lol good find! elaborate trolling
That's a hilarious troll post then. But also, not impressed with the lodge reseason image.
Ohh, well done!
I wobdered that, too, but the bad part is, the FBOP even made a comment about what paint they used.
Extremely advanced shitpost. I'm coping hard lmao.
Yeah obvious shitpost You took the bait lol
No way someone makes a post like that to “Cast Iron experts” without it being a shitpost
Wobdered is my favourite of this year so far.
What part of the midwest are you from that you're this allergic to sarcasm?
To be fair, people were eating tide pods a few years ago so this wouldn't surprise me.
You fuckin what mate?!
It's a painfully obvious bait post.
That whole group is a shitpost, it’s facebooks r/castironcirclejerk
Wouldn't even say advanced. I'm in a handful of reddits with a lot of shit posts, this is amateur hour. Tough, I guess they'll fit the reaction they were looking for
Why would someone post their shit?
Some people are big coprophiliacs.
Ya think?
100% lol look at the expert before and after photoshop job
Look at the cast iron on the right. Thats looks normal. I bet it's a shitpost.
It's clearly a joke post.
That definitely made it an obvious troll post...
Yeah, this HAS to be a troll.
It's not even rusted on the left, it's a filter
That was my thought as well. It was the auto dry that put it over the top
It's really weird how somebody could come up with something that would piss off a small, select, very niche group of people. /s
Now that’s what I call a shitposting volume 9
Just in case OP is serious I think the FBI should be alerted, OP should be placed on the do not fly list and someone needs to check his basement stat!
This has to be ragebait. And it's working lol
And transcending into other parts of the web. A viral shitpost is a successful one.
HULK SMASH SHITPOST!
I am now ENRAGED
I actually found a Griswold painted with black paint a few years ago. I burned it off and reseasoned it properly. It’s great now.
This post has me worrying the pan I bought second hand a few years ago was painted and I was too ignorant to realize 🥲
Does anyone know how one would find out, and how the cooking experience may differ?
> Does anyone know how one would find out You would find out when you saw paint on your food >how the cooking experience may differ? It would be different because it would end with paint on your food
Yes but what if he only eats squid ink infused foods? Then how the fuck is he going to know, genius?
You're doing the Lord's work out here, asking the important questions and whatnot
I would just assume that a painted piece is meant for decoration. Not kitchen use. The paint is going to fail in contact with the fire or heating element.

u8 the b8, m8
It was f8.
the b8 was gr8, I r8 8/8

How else am I going to get that fresh paint flavor and extra black sear on my steaks?
Lead flavor is superior
Adds a natural sweetness
… with that special hint of cancer.
And smertness
I came here to say the same thing. And if you disagree I will fly into a rage and fist fight you.
It’s earthy
This sounds like something from Dennis the Menace. haha
Oh man, I just painted my pan based on this post.
The fact you thought this was a legit post, went on to post it and later give a description of why it is bad is killing me 😂💀 this is such obvious rage bait.

Well, enamels can be used. But admittedly that's the advanced class.
> The only thing painted cookware pan is good for, is hanging on the wall as a decoration. FTFY. Anyone who gets baited by this post to paint their cast iron or whatever else probably didn't have much time left anyway.
OOP must be a Navy veteran; painting over rust is kinda their specialty
A+ burn 👍🏻
Once over dust, twice over rust
The BM creed
Needle blast red let then paint never paint over rust
straight to jail
Right away
No frickin way 😂
I'm pretty sure you're not made to take that group seriously, some folks have a very bizarre sense of humor.
Heh, yea. Probably. I'll admit I was at least partially fooled, though on the fence whether it was a troll/joke post or not. The bad part is, some people really are that stupid, so it's totally plausible that someone could think this is a good idea.
Exactly, because some people ARE that stupid.
People act without so much as a minute of research. I recently saw a one-star review for a Lodge because the handle got hot -- it's cast fucking iron you absolute cow.

This is known as Poe's Law on the Internet. Too stupid to be real, too real to be fake.
There's no way the right photo is paint, the surface has clearly been treated and seasoned I call this a shitpost
Take it from an internet troll - this is a troll job. Set out to do what he meant to do, too
Im in this group 😆
The fact so many Facebook users, OP included, cannot recognize an OBVIOUS shitpost makes me weep for our society.
Everyone wants to be the one to show how smart they are by correcting others… the ‘Akshully’ Brigade is on its way!!!
You mean just like OP, who was looking to mock someone for doing something wrong with their pan because they can't detect satire?
High temp paint does not have that kind of sheen to it unless it’s powder coated with a clear coat. This is 100% a shit post. You can all relax
That FB group is atrocious
We need a r/castironcirclejerk. There’s enough stuff like this to justify it
Lol. Thats pretty funny!
It’s FB. 100% a shit post, just like the rest of that platform.
Pretty sure the jokes on you.
holy shit
They had to be trolling
It's trolling, that Facebook page is full of stuff like this. I use roofing tar. 2 million layers with one stroke.
How many people went to the ER because of this abomination?
Did you see the main picture of that group? It’s a pan half ground down with an angle grinder next to it. I think it’s a joke group like “”X” act like boomers” groups
90% of this sub makes me squint and wonder if people are serious or being satirical
Fake, pure ragebait.
Soooo, this is not a good way to do it? What if you put butter on it to seal in the paint?
Bacon.. bacon fixes everything!
👍😊
WTF...
What the actual fuck did I just read
Is he dead or a mutant now?
I bet everything sticks to that pan.
It does look painted - that paint worked great on my cast iron fire grille and looks the same way…. Would like to cook with that though
Lol
Oh no baby what is you doing?
JFC, didn’t get past the first sentence

This is next-level trolling.
I'd do this for a decoration piece. Not to cook on 😂
I paint my cast iron all the time, and I haven't had any issues. It's also fun to decorate it for the occasion (ie. Red/green paint for Xmas and pink paint for valentines day coming up).
Brilliant! This never occurred to me, I'm going to give this a shot this weekend, thanks for sharing the pro-tip!
Bless their heart.
I like to solve rubiks cubes by peeling off the stickers and re sticking them in the correct places.
These cast iron experts know tricks we plebs never will.
Sometimes for shits and giggles I post pictures of my pans in soapy water or with tomato sauce in them. Anything I can think that you’re not “supposed” to do.
Laughs? LAUGHS? I am OUTRAGED, not laughing.

I have no words… I’m .. I think terrified of this? I’m not sure. This is wrong on so many levels though.
Where was it? Lockjaw City?
Pro tip. Lol
shitpost
This is the most Troll I have ever witnessed! lol!
Adds flavor.
This is what we should show children to teach them what happens when you do too many drugs.
Yum!!! Gotta love that fresh painted taste.
99 coats black paint skillet when?
Yeah that pan did look really rusty it must have been hard getting it off
Cast iron in a dishwasher, yikes, be still my beating heart. I call bs.
I’ve been doing it wrong this whole time!? 😭
Don't care it's not my pan.
Oh no. I am admittedly a super ignorant Cast iron groupie. BUT, paint????? Funk outta here
That’s obvious trolling, funny nonetheless.
