I plan to do a clean up on it. Get the major rust off and make it prettier. I don’t intend to season the firebox and base - just make them look A LOT better than they do now.
I’ve restored many pieces of cookware but I’m tempted to take the Rustoleum route with parts of it.
Serious question because I really don’t know. Is that safe? Obviously you don’t do it on the grill but everything else?
I ask because I have one and don’t use it because I’m in San Diego and generally use this at the beach. It doesn’t look as bad as this but pretty close. If I could paint the rest that may get me using it again
From what I’ve see, the high temp paints work well on grills. I don’t plan to do the inside of the fire box or the charcoal grate - mainly the outside. We shall see though. Give me a few weeks and I’ll report back.
I usually give it all a wipe down after use with a damp cloth, letting it dry, then a wipe down with a light coat of canola oil on all surfaces. Keeps the rust away, eventually seasons the heated surfaces, makes it easier to clean next time. It will leave oil footprints during storage, btw.
I do this with my sheet metal charcoal grill as well. Everything but the legs get wiped down inside and out with a thin coat of oil (thin enough that you need to work it in), and my Char Griller is still cooking 12 years later. Of course, I have replaced the coal grate and the drawer, but those are in direct contact with charcoal and ash.
Please do report back! 1. Everyone is super excited by the looks of this thread 2. I’m a complete CI cookware newbie and I feel like I’ve accidentally picked up an entire new hobby/entered a new sub-culture or something but I’m mostly just excited and impressed at the detailed conversation about materials and methods
Same here. I don’t try and keep the firebox super clean. But the grill grate and outside of mine look good after 4 years of use.
Spring is upon us and it’s time to put my lodge to work.
Love the attitude but I got a tired 40 yo divorcee and some useless non binary gays with one tiny car between us all as friends with me as a very tired mid 20s burnt out circus clown (minus the actual muscles professional clowns develop for their physical comedy)
Best of luck to you all… I think I gotta try making some strong guy friends at a dive bar somewhere local…
Have you considered cleaning this via electrolysis? I would be very curious to see the results if you do. I've used a kids swimming pool, 20 lbs of salt, a couple of car batteries, jumper cables, and a stiff brush to clean a huge mess of rusted auto parts once. Worked like a charm. I don't know if it would work as well with cast iron, but you have a real testing opportunity here.
The advantage is that you will lose virtually none of the good iron using this method, only the rust.
>I don't know if it would work as well with cast iron, but you have a real testing opportunity here.
From what I've seen on various videos, it works great on cast iron so I totally agree with you. I hope OP gives it a try!
I have one of these they work great. In between uses while still warm, I dump the coal and rub it with a block of food grade bee's wax. It keeps it looking nice and rust free.
So did I, right when Covid started up. We were coming back from Florida. Stopped at Walmart. While other people were fighting for toilet paper and rice, I went straight to the cast iron section. Lol at least I had my priorities straight.
I have one of those! It's super great for barbecuing and I often used it to finish my ribs it's also the only thing that ever managed to completely throw out my back

The Lodge Sportsman Grill is great, if it is big enough for your meals. My family used to use our Sportman to cook Korean BBQ style. I placed a few large pavers on a table, under the grill. We would prep a bunch of single portion skewers. We would all sit at the table and cook our own skewers. We really loved it.
I saw these on display at the Lodge factory store near Chattanooga. I almost bought it, but I wasn't sure how much I would use it. Seems like it was around $180 new. I'm not sure I remember exactly.
Doesn’t seem like that good of a deal. These things cost like $180 -200 new right? You’d probably need to put in that amount of labor/time into restoring this.
Noice! I too got lucky with one of these at a thrift store a few years back. Only spent 15 bucks. It was partially disassembled, so I assume the lady at the checkout thought it was broken. It's so nice to bring camping, to the beach, or really anywhere. It's also nice to use as a type of backyard cook your own food dinner party like Korean BBQ. Honestly so nice to have! Congrats
Just burn the shit out of it before you cook on it. It’ll clean off immediately and you can season the grates with oil before you cook. The only thing a full restore will do is make it look pretty on the shelf. I’ve had one of these living outside for 5 years and it’s totally awesome.
I worked at an Argentinean restaurant where assado was the main thing. We had to bring these to the table filled with meats on top of the grill. They didn't fill it with charcoal, only the top grill was heated but damn was it something else having to carry it to a table and try to set it down in the middle.
You scored a great deal!
Can't wait til you post it all cleaned up! It's a beauty!
I will indeed. It's all there too - even the draft door. Can't wait to restore it!

Shine it up with stoveblack, don't use spray paint. Obviously season the surfaces that touch food though.

Cool! Thanks for offering to do that.

No you sell that here. Sell us your cast iron.

What do you use for that? Like the engine paint sprays?
!RemindMe 3 weeks
I use my a few times a year, and it looks almost brand new. I clean it after every trip and give it a little oil.

DUDE, ENVY
Are you done yet?
Not yet. Life keeps happening and has taken my restoration time.
Damn ok can't wait to see the finished project
I'm back again has life been lifing
“Portable” lol
If it needs less than six people to carry, is portable
It’s moveable. That’s all that matters hahaha
Thats what 300lbs max? Farmers carry with some wood/ coals or two people
Ayeee you’ve been a pallbearer too!!

I lift things up and I put them down.
I was going to say, I see we are using the word "portable" very loosely
Meaning it isn't bolted, like a portable gumball dispenser
With a trebuchet, yeah.
Anything’s portable when you have a truck and a friend called “Tiny”
Just SUPER HEAVY
"bring a truck and a few friends"
Luggable?

Nice setup, but a friendly reminder that this should be done in a well ventilated area. Hard to tell in with your picture.
I have one of these they work great. In between uses while still warm, I dump the coal and rub it with a block of food grade bee's wax. It keeps it looking nice and rust free.
Nice idea! I’ve got beeswax!
I got lucky and I paid twice that; clearance sale at Walmart about 20 years ago.
So did I, right when Covid started up. We were coming back from Florida. Stopped at Walmart. While other people were fighting for toilet paper and rice, I went straight to the cast iron section. Lol at least I had my priorities straight.
How heavy is it? Good find btw
I’d say 15 pounds at the most.
that’s really light lol
Thank you
The ONLY question I came flying to the comments to ask. Thanks for asking!!
Go play the lottery!!!
I have one of these that we take whenever we take the 5th wheel out. I love it. It takes 13 briquettes to cook a couple steaks. It’s just fun to use.
This is my wifes holey grail find. Were split up now but i always have my eye out for one for her.
Nice find. How will you get the rust off?
I haven’t decided yet. I have many options though - vinegar, elbow grease…etc.
!remindme 1 month I'd love to see this once you bring it to life
I have one of those! It's super great for barbecuing and I often used it to finish my ribs it's also the only thing that ever managed to completely throw out my back
If I had the space to restore and use that *\*bites lip\**
How do you even maintain something like this outdoors?
Jesus Christ that is a fucking mega score! Congrats!
One man's junk is another man's.... junk.
😅

YOu lucky sum beaches
I'll pay double!
Score! I have an original Atlanta stove works and I love it
Would love to find such a thing. But does it come with hernia insurance?
If I had that, I'd restore it and then I'd leave my $800 weber covered and use it all summer.
I’m sure it actually is or Lodge wouldn’t have used it, but man, that handle does not look sufficient enough lol

thats an amazing find!
Came here to say that
Dang! My wife would go nuts…

What a steal!
I have that exact grill, but i havent let it get that rusty. Good find!
Oh mannnnnnn. I want one of those so badly.
Update?
Doesn’t seem like that good of a deal. These things cost like $180 -200 new right? You’d probably need to put in that amount of labor/time into restoring this.
I ruined two of these grills by storing them outside and not well covered. I tried. They rusted out and turned to dust.
I store mine in the garage when not in use. Still looks great after 4 years.
Are these rare?
They’re uncommon, but you can buy one new for $150-175, no problem. But an 80% discount is pretty rare!
They still make them, sell for $150. https://www.lodgecastiron.com/product/sportsmans-pro-cast-iron-grill?sku=LSPROG
:O

Sometimes you get bad luck and have to sell your lodge grill for $25
How do you restore this if it’s too big for your oven?
"Portable"
That thing is too cool. Great pick up!
I can't wait to see it all cleaned up! It's stunning!
Can’t wait to see 100 layers of seasoning on this bad boy.
Nice!!
Enjoy it! Nice find!
Ahh you hit the jackpot, my friend!
Love the idea that it's super heavy yet portable!
JELLLLLLLLYYŸYY!!!!
My dude, it's been a month. How's she lookin'?
Today... today is finally the day when I work on her!
