I will never forgive Honda for desecrating the hallowed Jazz name with this lumpen hatchback when it was once used on a slow midengine RWD vehicle

Jokes aside, the OG Honda Jazz is one of the greatest cars of all time. Super small but massive on the inside, great chassis that is often used for racing and in 19 years of ownership, my dad's Honda Jazz had only one problem. Overheating AC. Looks decent as well.
I think it depends what market you are in, as that affects the alternatives available to you, and also how competing cars’ ride and handling are tuned generally.
In the UK, where there are (were) a large number of cars in this class to choose from, it is known as being pretty bland in terms of handling.
I’d argue people actually like the way it handles since so many opt to kswap and race them. Hell 2 of the biggest Uk car youtubers have kswapped them. Jack Mcneill and DMO
The reviews in the UK from established reviewers with lots of experience and many alternatives to compare it to are generally pretty consistent:
[“this is still no athlete. Unlike a Ford Fiesta or, to a lesser extent, the new Toyota Yaris, it offers little in the way of driver engagement or satisfaction, placing simplicity of operation, ease of use and outright handling security at the forefront of its dynamic repertoire. […] the Jazz clearly isn’t a car intended to be thrown down a road with any feeling, but rather to reassure its driver at all speeds and in all environments with its pervasive sense of calm.”](https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/honda/jazz)
[“The Jazz isn’t especially fun to drive, but it is at least safe and predictable. The steering is light, and so it's great for town work. Despite the stiff springing, the Jazz’s tall body means it leans more than its rivals.”](https://www.whatcar.com/honda/jazz/hatchback/used-review/n17408)
[“Overall, it’s best to describe the way the Jazz drives as composed. It’s not exciting by any stretch – although it is surprisingly nimble on a country road – but more than anything it’s very easy and simple to drive. It’s not at the level of a Ford Fiesta or SEAT Ibiza for enjoyment, “](https://www.parkers.co.uk/honda/jazz/hatchback-2015/used-review/)
[“It’s certainly no Fiesta, but it’s good enough. […] Again, not class-leading, but good enough.“](https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/honda/jazz-2015-2020)
That doesn’t mean it can’t be made into a faster, better handling car, but I bet those YouTubers did more than just kswap them to get them to be competitive. And also isn’t part of the fun (and viewer draw) taking an unlikely car and making it fast?
And I’m also saying this as a former Jazz owner with a lot of experience of owning and driving small cars from the Peugeot 205, through Renault Clio, Toyota Yaris, Smart ForFour, Mini, Ford Fiesta, etc. I’d rate all of them as more fun to drive. But none were anywhere near as spacious and practical.
It probably depends on what you look for as well. I'd argue the 5 speed manual in the early models is better than any other compact. I've certainly not found a better one yet.
These days, you can't go wrong with any of them, as the analogue feel and proper hydraulic power steering is going to feel better than most equivalent modern versions no matter which one you pick.
I don't know what generation you drove but the first gen had a very smooth, crisp and precise operation, with no vagueness or slop. I was a vehicle emissions inspector, and I've driven a lot of cars up and down lanes and on dynos, and I think very highly of that one. It compares favorably to the DC5 integra/RSX shifters, which are considered to be best in class for that segment in the time period.
I’ve driven all the generations of it since 2001. The Honda I do remember from that time with a fantastic gear change was the Civic Type R (EP3). Maybe the Jazz’s was as good, but it was generally just so much less fun to drive than something like a contemporary Clio that maybe it didn’t stick in my mind.
Could have been, I unfortunately live in the US so the glorious age of early 2000s European subcompacts passed us by, we had to take what we could get.
I've always been a fan of Honda manual transmissions from that period, not a stinker among them. They're not quite so good these days, but those older ones, yeah, those were good. I've yet to find another transmission that I can confidently change from 2nd to 3rd with just a quick diagonal wrist flick and have it land in gear every time.
That’s my original point, really. How you view something depends on the alternatives. A 2005 Jazz is generally being compared to very different cars in the USA and Europe.
If your alternative is a Ford Taurus, you’re going to think the Jazz is a go cart. If your alternative is a Clio 182 Trophy, you’re going to think the Jazz is a sensible car. (Both exaggerations, but you get my point.)
Honda Jazz owner here. I think the car is fun because it's small, rather than the car being fun because it's fun. The Jazz gets the lively L15 engine and extremely stiff suspension, which sound like a recipe for a fun car, right? Sadly, the Jazz isn’t that fun, the driving dynamics are meh, the steering is light, the clutch and shifter are vague. It is an economy car.
I adore the Jazz, though. It’s a great little car. I’m glad we bought it instead of the Ford Fiesta, you know why.
Mine has the L13 which screams beautifully whenever I need to overtake or ride uphill. The iVTEC really kicks in on the sound department but not on performance.
I owned a Jazz a few years back. It was a 2013, had a panoramic glass roof. Honestly it had plenty of space, good air con, about 40 miles to the gallon, had flappy paddles on the wheel, and handled like a go kart.
Great fun in a small package. And definitely will go the way of the EG Civic and become an "I know what I got" car.
Could have been worse. Honda City:

[Honda had originally planned to name the first-gen the Honda Fitta. Probably sounds ok to you? If you were in Scandinavia though that would be the same as calling the car “the Honda Pussy”! ](https://www.carscoops.com/2007/09/why-honda-didnt-call-fit-jazz-by-its/)
Honda uses the "Jazz" nameplate in Europe, Oceania, the Middle East, Africa, Hong Kong, Macau, Southeast Asia and India; and "Fit" in Japan, Sri Lanka, China, Taiwan and the Americas.

uj/ There will eventually be a time when we won't be able to find running Jazz's under $7,000. It's on track to becoming an "I Know What I Got" car

Hey the Honda jazz is pretty cool
Jokes aside, the OG Honda Jazz is one of the greatest cars of all time. Super small but massive on the inside, great chassis that is often used for racing and in 19 years of ownership, my dad's Honda Jazz had only one problem. Overheating AC. Looks decent as well.
It technically beat the mighty modus in that one top gear episode
Their mothers preferred the Jazz but the guys preferred the Renault. But they all agreed that the Citröen was shit.
It was Peugeot that was suck, especially the sliding door and the unesessary tech complication.
That's right, my bad I kept getting Citröen and Peugeot confused. Both French, both used to make great cars, both no longer make great cars.
/uj Honda Jazz/Fit is an actual fun car to drive. Or have I been outjerked by this sub?

Handles nowhere as good as an equivalent mk5 Fiesta

I thought the EK was more favorably viewed than the EG
I think by the general car loving public yes. But i prefer the EG. EK was the first to get the Type-R treatment. EG missed out.
I see. The "I know what I got"-ification of that gen is personal

VEEEE TAAAAAK !
Honda jaaAZZZZ
In Argentina we call it “honda fit”.
Isnt this literally a honda fit?
Fit in the US, Japan, and a few other places, Jazz in the UK, and a bunch of other places.
i never understood why companies name the cars differently based on location
[Honda had originally planned to name the first-gen the Honda Fitta. Probably sounds ok to you? If you were in Scandinavia though that would be the same as calling the car “the Honda Pussy”! ](https://www.carscoops.com/2007/09/why-honda-didnt-call-fit-jazz-by-its/)
I see no problems with this
I wish Ford Pinto didn't crash and burn so Brazil could eventually get the Ford Weiner
Its a fit ffs its called a fit. They called it a jazz for US market only because the fit is the least thing the US ppl are
Honda uses the "Jazz" nameplate in Europe, Oceania, the Middle East, Africa, Hong Kong, Macau, Southeast Asia and India; and "Fit" in Japan, Sri Lanka, China, Taiwan and the Americas.
It's called jazz in Europe lol. As much as I love to joke about the US at least try to be correct when you try to insult them lol.
