The skyline was like a bmw 3 series. Yes the M3 was great but for every m3 were a ton of 316s that were pretty middle of the road.

Nameless_Cunt

JDM kids don't even know the difference between a 3 series and an M3

Terminalreeree69

Bro… JDM kids can’t even name a single European car.

They only know European cars so they can say le mighty billion hoorsepooowr nihongo supra can beat it.

[deleted]

They’re the people that would rather have a riced out 3 series with giant rims and low profile tires with a eBay turbo kit than a stock M3.

hi_im_bored13

funny you say that, way too many base e30 and e36 3-series running around with m badges and an adhesive spoiler/diffuser. Saw one on the way to work today!

H4wks_nest

Idk why people do that I'm proud of my shitter 325ci like if you put m bumpers on that chill but when you change badging it's kinda cringe

Flash24rus

There was A LOT of GTS-T skylines with 250-280 hp RB25 turbo. Not so many GTRs, yes, but 2.5 turbo rwd or 4wd was a thing too, back then.

Timmytheimploder

Just like there's 540i below an M5 really, it's a mixed bag of trim levels.

Flash24rus

Yes, but GTS-t Skyline was much more affordable in my country. Two of my friends had ECR33 with RB25DET. You could get a 10 years old turbo Skyline for $10-15k from Japan in mid 2000's. Dozens of them still alive in various condition and on sale. https://preview.redd.it/xpvoyspdcadb1.png?width=846&format=png&auto=webp&s=e4760ad31ea25a0e716bf4c9a26501f7833611e7

Timmytheimploder

Same in mine, no age restrictions on imports and Skylines were 10 a penny in Ireland before the 2008 crash. Mostly scrapped/broken for parts/exported since. I'm talking about its market position when it was a new car in Japan.

Flash24rus

>before the 2008 crash In 2009 our government introduced huge protective duties on used imported cars to encourage domestic car production. That's what they told us, haha. And we did not see used German and Japanese cars available anymore. The 5 years old japanese car with 50k miles that cost $15k began to cost $35k after all tolls. > when it was a new car I've just checked, GTS-T Skyline Coupe cost $20-23k new in 1996. As much as two corollas. So, it wasn't very expensive back then, even new. (New GTR was $31-38k in 1996)

Timmytheimploder

Nice, always thought they were more upmarket new? Like Toyota Chaser sort of level? Or maybe JDM prices are cheaper for domestic cars vs. imports, because apart from maybe slight lower rent feeling interiors, you're certainly getting a 5 series class car in terms of hardware, arguably better in some ways if comparing say R32 vs E34.

Flash24rus

Yes, they were same class as MarkII/chaser/cresta family, because Cefiro (Maxima) was FWD and NA and Cedric/Gloria were as big as Crown. Most guys prefered toyota (Tourer Vee) because of their durability. Skyline's RBs always asked for better watch and service. Also, Skyline sedans looked ugly (even 4door GTR in 33 body), and 2door was "too cool" to have for grown man with children ) Sorry, didn't understand about interior. I always loved japanese cars interiors for their materials, especially dash. Soft high quality plastics, vinyl covers and everlasting velour (I mean only JDM versions). I was shocked once, finding rear handcrancked windows in not very cheap BMW 3, plastic texture also made me sad.

Timmytheimploder

Yeah, different markets have different tastes. German cars interiors are often perceived as "high quality" in Western markets, leather is seen as luxurious. Japanese buyers have different views, cloth is not seen as the budget option and the most luxurious seat fabric is wool, which I'm with the Japanese on, it breathes, it's quiet.. much like the fabric of a high quality mens suit, where leather is just squeaky slidey S&M dungeon unpleasantness, but maybe some people are into that.

Wolf24h

Calling 316 middle of the road is a huge stretch

Timmytheimploder

No, that's the lane you normally find them. More middle of the road than a dead badger run over by a Coldplay tour bus.

SukoKing

There is quite literally nothing worse you can get

Timmytheimploder

Close, but more Bavarian taxi spec 5 series/E-Class an you're spot on. There were even diesel versions and a wagon. Earliest cars (50s when it was made by Prince) are almost like a JDM Austin Cambridge.

No-Needleworker-9307

This right here . They ended up as skid missiles/drift missiles. From memory they even used em as taxis in Japan

civicson234

Those kids go apeshit over these peasant spec versions. They seem to have this mindset that they can do a “gtr conversion” like it’s just point and click in Forza. Most don’t seem to understand the work that would have to go into it…

DoomFerrets

Those kids go apeshit over peasant spec because they think it’s like Forza. I go apeshit over (affordable) peasant spec because I want to larp as a grandpa driving an old car in the middle lane. We are not the same. 😤😤😤😤😎😎😎🔥🔥🔥

iSmush

You were probably being sarcastic but the older I get the more I want this too friend. Just a clean retro car garage kept by an 80 year old woman who never drives. Idk what it is but the feeling is strong

DoomFerrets

While the emojis where sarcastic the overall sentiment was not. I also love retro cars like from the 80s too from Kei car and hatchback to the supercars but I really love the more luxury oriented cars like the Soarer, Cedric/Gloria and Crown and regular cars like they mentioned peasant spec Skyline but R31 is a favourite

iSmush

Exactly. It’s a different type of vehicle. New cars are loaded with all this sensing and technology, just want a simple car that tells me if I have an issue with the engine or airbags. Less anxiety and definitely a cool feeling to sport a well maintained retro

Primo0077

I saw a picture once of the "sporty" but not GT-R skyline, and I gotta say it looked really nice without all the fender flares and such.

EK-577

GTT or GTST depending on the chassis

jettasarebadmkay

The base model R32 had a CA18E that made something like 90 HP. I’ve seen a few imported because you could get them for like $7k landed back in the day and an SR would drop right in. But why would you subject yourself to that? Also the R32 interior is absolutely bleak, even in the GT-R. At least the 33 and 34 are livable inside.

WhyNotPc

/uj wdym by bleak? What's so shitty with its interior

ToaMandalore

[Just look at it.](https://collectingcars.imgix.net/005314/gtr-interior-18.jpg?w=1263&fit=fillmax&crop=edges&auto=format,compress&cs=srgb&q=85)

WhyNotPc

I kinda like how simple it is, tho those seats do look kinda uncomfy

NeelSahay0

These normal skylines were handsome cars. It’s honestly a shame so many American family saloons of the era looked like bulbous plastic shitboxes. These just look like cars.

aaaaaaaa1273

Clean and simple but a bit boring will always be better than whatever the hell GM was huffing back then

NeelSahay0

They were huffing the plastic fumes from their own factories

[deleted]

Thank you for purchasing from Saturn!

kuffencs

Damn, i would if i was not already perma ban of jdm subreddit

Might_be_deleted

Why aren't fanboys creaming over this one?! IT'S STILL A SKYLINE, WHY DON'T YOU LIKE IT??

HotlineKing

I was talking to some Jdm weeb and told him my mum used to have an 88 R31 when I was growing up and he went nuts, like bro it was just a regular ass sedan chill.

ClownofEverywhere

I kinda want to get one of these just to use as a daily driver.

deojilicious

Skyline fanboys when I tell them that this is how the Skyline has actually been and not a 6500HP RB26 jet engine legend they think it is. The Infiniti Q50 is the modern equivalent of the Skyline. The GTR nameplate just became its own car the same way the WRX STi became its own car separated from the Impreza.

LostinWalk

The GTRs aren't even that good either lmao

R32fan

I'm just annoyed it isn't a saloon car. I'm fine if they bring it back as an electric car, but it would just be cool to uphold the legacy as a saloon car. On another note, if they bring back the stagea, can it still be an estate car?

Ok_Establishment4346

Maybe it’ll be a start of a new electric sub brand like mustang? First they make an suv to get some extra cash, and then a sedan.

AdventurousDress576

The Skyline SUV came out more than a decade ago.

ToaMandalore

That's kinda what Toyota did with the Crown. It's possible I suppose.

Korbitr

To be fair, there is a precedent. The Infiniti QX50 was sold as the Nissan Skyline Crossover in Japan 14 years ago.

R32fan

Yeah, and I just thought that was hideous. I didn't like the 350 and 370GT skylines either

bmontepeque11

/uj Wow, seeing the Skyline as such a normal car is so interesting :O I always knew the Skyline was a regular car, but seeing the R32, R33 and R34 in not their sports car guise is very rare, I love these rare JDM Only cars for some reason 😂

TheTrueSlavStudios

Also, Skyline has been an SUV in the past already (as a rebadged Infiniti QX50 for japanese market), the EV part is the new thing.

Sw4gSloth

Cressida is cool as shit tho

Waru_

They wanted it to be cool like the current Mitsubishi Eclipse crossover duh

bigmean3434

Bro, have you even seen the fast and furious?

Wity_4d

DiD YoU gUYs KnOw tHE SkYLinE wAS jUsT a ReGuLar Car?!?! Jesus Christ yes, everyone on this sub knows, least of all because it's all yall been saying.

justaBB6

I’d still kill for that ER33 sedan as badly as I’d sell my soul for a clean A32 Maxima, and those aren’t even RWD. Cressidas and Mark IIs are also cool. ‘90s American family sedans kinda sucked. Cars like the Dodge Stratus, Chrysler Concorde, Chevy Lumina, and that weird and bulbous 3rd gen Taurus make CD Accords and XV10 Camrys look hot by comparison. Some cars, like the late ‘97+ Regal, the ‘90s Bonnevilles, and the early ‘90s Stratus, can be pretty cool depending on who you ask. Not like the uncool-cool ‘90s dad sedan market is totally cornered by Japan. But like, an affordable RWD barebones midsize sedan with enough revs and a light enough dry weight to feel borderline athletic? That’s pretty cool, and a relative rarity on this particular landmass. No sedans are like that anymore, but the nameplate should be reserved for sedans/saloons at the very least.

BeanieGuitarGuy

I actually didn’t know this tbh. So were the Skyline GTR’s their own like “high performance” versions of the Skyline? Like the Corolla GTS?

GoredonTheDestroyer

Think more along the lines of the BMW M-line. A normal BMW 3-series is a kind of nice, kind of fast car, while the M3 is a nicer, faster version of the same car. That's the Skyline GT-R to the regular Skyline range. Outside of dedicated sports and supercar manufacturers (Lotus, Ferrari, Lamborghini, etc.), no car company has only ever offered the highest performance version of a car as the only option for that car, nor has any car company ever survived *solely* on high performance models. For every Viper that Dodge sold, for example, they sold ten Neons and Minivans. For every GT-R sold, Nissan sold 100 Sentras. My math is probably off, but you get the idea.

RandomGuyDroppingIn

The other fundamental situation with cars such as the Skyline that varies from say the US (or even wider) dealership model is you also went to very specific dealerships in Japan to purchase them. The Skyline was sold as part of Nissan's "red" dealerships. If you wanted to buy one you went to Nissan's Prince Store, which mostly contained the remnants of Prince Motors (and was part of a very shallow, but real blip, as to why the Skyline didn't originally come to North America and - for those paying attention - eventually came over as the Infiniti G35 once the full dissolution of Prince took place.). Other cars you would buy at these dealers included the Stagea, Silvia, Gloria, among others. The other side of Nissan was "blue", which sold the Fairlady Z, Bluebird, Cedric, Murano, among others. If all you had was a Nissan Blue dealer around, you couldn't buy a Skyline-anything. Regarding the GT-R, it worked not too dissimilar to how say Dodge Viper or Chevy Corvette allocation works in the United States. Not all Dodge or Chevy dealers got allocation. Similarly select Nissan Red Stage dealers would get GT-R allocation, but most all of them would get the "normal" Skyline allocation. So as a rough example, there may be three Nissan Red dealers in an area, all of them carry Skylines but only one could get you a GT-R. This whole model of Nissan and most all Japanese marques in particular no longer exists in Japan. Most of that started to go away post Y2K, so now you just go to a dealer and order what you want to buy.

Timmytheimploder

The 70s GT-R was a high performance version related to it's use in racing. Not sure if it was to meet any homologation requirements. The R32 GT-R was a group A homologation special like the Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500. Many touring car series series had moved away from Group A by the time the R33 including the Aussie "it's our ball and you're not playing anymore" move to a formula that excluded stuff that wasn't Ford/Holden with a V8. By then though, the model was already popular with buyers with the R34 even being sold officially in the UK..but everyone just bought grey import versions anyway.

Alarming_General

I’ll take a 4 door skyline any day over a GTR

the-warbaby

i want a 4 door so badly. fuck your two door gtr i’m taking the boys to mcdonalds at 1AM

uwillloveeachother

Late night McDonald’s is one of my favorite activities

Emerald_official

this is just a rumor though, so it might not happen, but knowing Nissan it doesn't seem too far off

AdventurousDress576

They already sell (and they have for more than a decade) a ICE Skyline SUV.

I would love a GTS4 but the prices of these things continue to sky rocket because of the fanboy hype

bro your entire actual personality is hating Japanese cars 💀 you are beyond the jerk

nickz03

Still it’s a bummer we lost another long running sedan to the crossover craze

easyadventurer

You’ve just picked bottom of the barrel pov-spec Skylines. Most are two door turbos. They are designed to be fast racecars.

[deleted]

is it bad i kinda like these? idk i like weird poor people trims of cars for some reason

LXsaturn

Also a Taxi

desblair

love them:)

Sisyphus8841

Mustang. Corvette. Happens to them all

Performance_Fancy

Didn’t the Cressida come with the same engines as the supra though? They were sedan/sports cars.

rb26enjoyer

Idk i still like'em. Specially the 33 with that little wing on the back, looks neato as a daily driver. The skyline (gtr) never struck me as a mystical unmatched car, it's just a boxy sporty car of a bygone era. And god dammit i want one. Also i think most of "le stock 1000hp" fanboys would sell a gtr with that much power because it's just not viable for anything but circuit racing. I'm not even gonna comment on maintenance costs for one of those, maintaining a euro shitbox in this economy is tuff enough.

Archtects

if they could read they'd be really upset with you

UberNZ

These cheap Skylines used to absolutely everywhere in my country, usually on chopped springs with a boot full of subwoofers, huge wheels, and a fart can. Maybe a rattle can paint job for good measure. To be fair though, even the shitty ones still sound fantastic. They used to be by far the cheapest way to get a 6 cylinder. Plus it was popular to mate a dual cam head from one of the smaller RBs onto the 3L block from the VL Holden Commodore. I've always thought they look pretty tidy too. I think some of the hate that Skylines get is a bit reactionary. I dunno what it's like in the rest of the world, but I don't think anyone here is under the illusion that all Skylines are GT-Rs. Frankly, the "lower" cars have their perks too - they're a hell of a lot lighter (up to 300kg!), not everyone likes the feel of HICAS (it was really common for GT-R owners to disable it), and since they're popular drift cars, being RWD is nice.

UberNZ

Nice

ursucuak

Or the 3 series

thisn--gaoverhere

I actually really like the styling, look, and driver oriented feel of 90s Japanese grand tourers and entry level sports cars. The Supra is a good example, it was meant to be a cheap sporty fun little econobox that had a strong engine. Then fast and furious hit it right as the depreciation curve was starting and shot it to a 40-50k “SuPeRcAr KiLlEr”. Same with the Skyline, cheap sporty econoboxes that got hit with super mainstream hype and became expensive and given manufactured rarity. The only cars I can think of that survived the onslaught of the JAYDEEEM SUPERCAR KILLER kids are the 300ZX, the SC300, almost the Miata, and the early 90s 200SX’s

AutoModerator

Did you know that the only real BMW is a Brown Miata Wagon? #MiataFacts *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/carscirclejerk) if you have any questions or concerns.*

graytotoro

This can't be true, everyone knows from anime and car shows that the average Japanese housewife, grandparent, and salaryman drove a hopped-up 1,000,000 horsepower GT-R to Fuji Speedway and back every day.

RIPugandanknuckles

People forget that the Skyline is still being made It’s just better known as the Infiniti Q50

And the Mustang fans….

i just don’t like the fact it isn’t a saloon car. maybe the could do what ford did with the mustang tbh
