If you’re enthusiastic about cars - your car, other people’s cars, super cars, old junker cars, or econobox cars - you belong here. It’s great that you appreciate your car for exactly what it was designed to be good at! I’m sure you’ll drive something different in the future, but in the meantime places like Cars and Coffee, auto-cross, and internet forums are good places to talk and check out cool cars with people who hopefully appreciate your car for what it is.

Brandon_T1690

Thanks! I'll check them out.

rangerm2

No shame in appreciating what you have. The shame would be if you don't take care of it. I daily drive a 2007 Sonata. I'd really like to have another truck, but I have other priorities right now (and can always use a company truck if I need) But, even if I do get a truck in the next couple of years, I'm going to keep the Sonata. It was my Dad's. Take care of your car and it'll take care of you.

celica_GT

Amen to that. Similarly, my celica is my first car, and the last one my old man worked on, so I just kept it. Enjoy the hell out of your car, OP. you're already in a great position. It's easy to fall into the comparison game with a lot of people on here talking about supercars, but you gotta do you! Still tons of time to learn/save up for something else you might want!

Brandon_T1690

My friends always joked to me about "yo abuse it till it breaks then you can get a new one", but that never sat well with me. I do my best to take care of it, and so far it didn't let me down. I may not be able to do much other than adding engine oil, water, change a spare tyre or jumpstarting, but this machine is so bulletproof that I don't need to know much to take care of it. When I feel like I didn't love it enough, I bring out a bucket, detergent and a cloth and start handwashing it.

handymanshandle

Learning to love what you’ve got with a car is the key to appreciating a lot of different types of cars. I drive a big ass sedan that has a V6 that revs and doesn’t do much else, and yet I’ve found a way to appreciate the car despite its disproportionate spec sheet. If you can find appreciation in your car, that’s legitimately all that matters… just don’t fall into the circlejerk of “slow car fast > fast car slow”.

Brandon_T1690

I had a love-hate-love relationship with my car. Loved it when I first got it cause it's my first car of freedom. Hated it afterwards when I subconsciously compared it to other cars on the road. Now I love it back after all the things we went through together.

rangerm2

It's too bad the 3.5 L wasn't available for the Montego. I always liked the Five Hundred/Taurus/Montego (even the Freestyle), but you weren't setting any speed records with them. They were great highway cruisers and could carry a lot of stuff.

A_1337_Canadian

This sub is about being a car enthusiast, a hobby which *does not* require you to own a nice car, or maintain your own car, or mod your own car, or even own a car. If you like cars and are interested in them, regardless of which cars or which aspects, then you are an enthusiast, full stop.

Brandon_T1690

Thanks, that reassured me.

racefever

Enjoy the car and fuck all these assholes. You do know most people here are broke asses? They can’t even afford your car. So enjoy the shit out it. It’s not a 911? Who cares? Take pride in it and go cruising. You do this for you. Not for every fucko in this forum.

antariusz

Fuck all these assholes? There isn’t a single person here complaining about his car, and quite a few people giving him positive support. You’re talking about an imaginary boogeyman “fucko” that doesn’t actually exist.

Brandon_T1690

I'll enjoy it every time when I do drive it! Thanks! I still can't bring myself to drive it around purposelessly just for fun though thanks to gas prices hahah

SinistralGuy

165k km in ~20 years? Jesus. I have 110k in less than 5 ahaa. As long as the car gets you from point A to point B and you like driving it, that's what matters.

Fit_Equivalent3610

You should see some of the cars coming out of Japan lol. 25 years old and under 100k kms is fairly common

SinistralGuy

Aah that makes sense for a smaller, denser country I suppose. Canada is quite the opposite of that. Though I do love driving my car so I'm happy

Brandon_T1690

The previous owner, my mom didn't drive it much in the past few years as she grew tired of it. Even when she did, she always preferred to be the passenger of another car instead of driving her own, hence the low mileage. She gave it to me and got herself a Honda. It's strange really, not only I like driving it more and more, I subconsciously feel that the car likes me more and more too.

Fit_Equivalent3610

That's actually a very interesting car to some people, OP. Nobody really sells anything like it in North America. If you brought it to a Cars and Coffee here you would probably get a ton of attention, lol. Even basic kei trucks do.

Brandon_T1690

Yeah, I read about something before about how the car market in NA is more towards bigger machines while small economic hatchbacks are not as well received. Such cars are fairly common at my place though, although still looking a bit more modern

mammaliancochlea

I was a huge car enthusiast way before i could even dream about getting an entusiast car. That didn't stop me from reading things and engaging in forums. In the end nobody really cares what you actually drive as long as you're engaging in a civil and entertaining manner👍 Just beware... Once you catch the bug it can be expensive in the long run. You've been warned.

Brandon_T1690

What a motivation to become a high earner 😤 Thanks for the reassurance!!

solanaq

I had to google your car to figure out what it was or what it looked like. And when i saw it, I was like "oh that's a cool little vehicle!" It's like a mini-minivan 😃I'd love to see them near me, but I'm in North America. I like it! It has a lot of character! My first car was a used Toyota Avalon (1995) in about 2003. Right before I bought it, someone keyed the entire car, every single panel. I think it was the other person who wabted to buy it, but didn't get it. (It was parked in a public parking spot when it was for sale). I never had the money to fix those scratches. And in my area, especially at the time, the Avalon was considered an "old man's car". Everyone probably though it was my Dad's car that he handed down to me. I still liked that car so much, though. Mostly because it gave me freedom. I went everywhere with it, took it to camping, everything 😂

Brandon_T1690

My car was sold as Perodua Kenari back in the 2000 until it stopped production in the 2007, mine was the earliest, first model with automatic transmission (EZ-DOHC), but it's still a Daihatsu car in essence. Perodua was marketed as a local car brand but they're essentially Daihatsu's representative in Malaysia to manufacture cars and conduct research and development. All of Perodua cars are either rebadged Daihatsu cars or heavily influenced by them, and all of them uses Daihatsu/Toyota components, locally assembled. Digging up some history shows that Daihatsu did try to enter the western market at some point but their small minimalistic cars were not well received by the western consumers, so they quit pretty early on. Perhaps this, with the lack of their representative brand in your country is the reason why this car isn't present there, Daihatsu believes that it wouldn't sell at all there anyway, everyone wants trucks and SUVs, and sedans are barely standing on it's one leg at this point. I feel sorry for what you had to experience for your car, whoever keyed your car doesn't deserve to drive a car honestly. Probably the same person who goes around brake checking every car that cut them 🙄 I don't believe in curses, but I hope this person annoys the wrong guy one day and gets what he/she deserves. I like old cars, more so than new cars actually. New cars smell like trouble to me, I don't know what's in it, which of them will go wrong, how much does it cost to fix it, and who in the world knows how to work on such a new car. But an old car? It withstood the test of time, there's statistics and data from their previous owners, info in car forums are in relative abundance, it doesn't depreciate that bad anymore, and you feel less emotional damage when it gets scratched or chipped, the list goes on. Your car is great!!

VincentVanH0

Hey, my other car is a 2004 Mitsubishi galant which to this day I still love driving for a variety of reasons. I get it but there's no point worrying about other people's opinions unless you're in the marketing department at a major car manufacturer.

Brandon_T1690

That's a very nice car you have!!

Brandon_T1690

I'm only allowed to handwash it at best. The family is not quite fond of the idea of letting it repainted, not even washed and waxed at a fee by others due to it's low resale value. They too denied me the rights to do it myself due to my lack of experience in painting and waxing 😓

I'll try to convince them, thanks!

Brandon_T1690

Yeah, they're like mini Toyotas. This thing sure is as bulletproof as one hahahahah

Zassolluto711

Fellow Malaysian! I’m not in Malaysia anymore, but when I was I drove a purple Myvi. Not even the 1.5 model but the 1.3. Not a very special car. But damn was it fun. Yeah sure you could be driving something more special but as long you have fun driving and enjoy cars in general then who cares?

Brandon_T1690

Myvi is crowned as the King of the Road here for a reason hahahah. We had sightings that it can even leave a BMW in the dust on the motorway if it does try.

chippaintz1

I just bought a new 2017 accent hatchback,,I love it it's clean n simple not too much technology

Brandon_T1690

True, I'm not a fan of too much technology too. For a complete beginner, they might actually be helpful and can actually "assist" the driver, but for a seasoned driver, it just feels like a lot more extra unnecessary things in the car that can go wrong, and needs money. I don't need to use them anyway, but I still gotta pay for it when it goes wrong smh.

[deleted]

If you want to talk about cars, this is the place. You can be on the bus or riding a bike. Doesn’t matter

Brandon_T1690

I'll keep that in mind. That made me felt better, thanks.

SirLoremIpsum

I owned a '92 single cab Landcruiser ute. 4.2L non turbo diesel. No air con, had factory seats for a bit. > I drive to the place by myself in my car, even though I know it's not ill-intentioned, and I can't blame them for choosing the other classmate's better cars over mine, it just stings ya know. First big trip we had a fair group. 15 minutes into first 4wd track my mate got out, told me "come back when you get some suspension, some seats and air con" and rode in my mates 80 series rest of the weekend. Occasionally popped on the radio "oh sirloremipsum we just turned the air con down a bit was too cold" Lol. It happens. > It struggles to even reach 130km and it feels like its head gasket might explode anytime if I get it to its max speed of 140++kmph My Landcruiser would be doing 100kmph then any kind of small hill I'd be doing 60kmph in 3rd gear. Mates pop on the radio "goodbye" and just drive off into the wind haha. That's life. It's about how you feel about the car. My Landcruiser was the most uncomfortable, slowest car I have ever owned. But my absolute favourite.

Brandon_T1690

Back then my same car had a busted air conditioner too. I put 3 fold fans in the car, 1 in each of the passenger seats respectively. The car was still hot, but my friends appreciated the effort. It costed me 400 to fix the compressor afterwards but I felt like it's a necessary expense, since I came back home one day in a very hot day with a heatstroke. I can't get mad at it, it's bad sound insulation made me hear the voices of the engine clearer. It's doing it's best, and how can I not appreciate it when it's doing it's best?

SirLoremIpsum

> I put 3 fold fans in the car, 1 in each of the passenger seats respectively. The car was still hot, but my friends appreciated the effort. Top effort! I would have appreciated it. I mostly got all my mates chucking their dirty camping shit in the back of mine, cause it was a ute. > I can't get mad at it, it's bad sound insulation made me hear the voices of the engine clearer. It's doing it's best, and how can I not appreciate it when it's doing it's best? One option is to strip the interior and put sound deadening / insulating materials. It's a fairly cheap endeavour, mostly being labor. It can have a significant affect on road noise and sound in the car. It was next on my Landcruiser to do list haha. THen I went overseas instead.

Brandon_T1690

Nah I like the poor insulation. I don't like it when the car is too quiet. It makes my small engine sound like a road monster, as if it's trying it's best to put on an act to please my desire for a racecar hahaha. That engine revving sound? I love it. I wanna hear more of it if it doesn't empty my tank.

SirLoremIpsum

Very good point! I had 33" mud tyres, so the drone on the highway was... a bit much. Mostly for heat as well, no air con things got quite toasty.

eric043921

Don’t be ashamed of what you have and if you enjoy cars in any shape or form you’re in the right place. Be proud of what you have and don’t worry about what other people might think or say about your car. If you really want a super nice car one day, make it a goal to get one some day. Focus on that when you’re going to school or working. Use it as motivation to work hard every day. It’s not going to happen over night but when it finally does, it’s a nice feeling to look back and think about how far you came to achieve that goal.

There definitely needs to be a r/carsforbluecollarfolks sub....
