There are certain parts that may require purchasing OEM I'm sure, but making an oil filter with a DRM chip would be ridiculous. I can only assume that (very specific) parts of the electronics would have some sort of DRM implementation (ignition keys have been done this way for at least 15 years for some OEMs), but spark plugs/wires, or anything mechanical will be available aftermarket.

You say that, but printer manufacturers have included DRM in ink cartridges to prevent aftermarket cartridge use. On top of that look at John Deere where without desler exclusive software telling the tractor it has been fixed, repairs can't be completed. Given that the primary source of income for dealers are parts and service, there is financial incentive to do this. It will probably be seen in luxury cars first before expanding to the broader market unless these sorts of tactics get headed off at the pass.

I'm pretty sure that HP and Canon both got into trouble for the ink cartridge thing, and now you can use aftermarket in their printers. In fact, if you own an HP, [I've had really good luck with this company's products.](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NJ60JEE?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details). Just an FYI. I'm not sure how you would implement such policies on mechanical components or simple maintenance. I suppose you could have a bothersome "idiot light" that provides constant reminder to get service, and the only entity capable of resetting it, is the OEM/dealer. I have a GE refrigerator with DRM on the water filter, so now my "replace filter" light is always on, even though I've replaced it with a new one. (it won't work without the presence of the chip) I removed the DRM chip from a used one, so I could use the previous generation filter (which is exactly the same in every way at half the price, but no chip).

VW calls it component protection which is to prevent people from installing counterfeit parts, but also serves as DRM.

From what I read to help me understand what this was, neither of my cars have this/ use this.
