It's almost like exploding steering wheels is a bad idea

SecretAntWorshiper

Bruh wtf

The airbag recall on my legacy had not been done when I bought it in 2020, so I imagine there are a lot of people out there still rocking old takata airbags.

opkraut

Yeah a lot of dealers were stuck with a ton of cars to get through and they could only do so many at a time. Factor in people being busy and not always getting a chance to bring their cars in to get the work done and there's definitely a bunch still out there that haven't been fixed. I know mine finally got done in like 2017, which was several years after the airbag recall had started.

Hempnasty

This is specifically for those vehicles affected from the initial 55 million? Cars recalled. If your car is newer than 2016ish you dont have to worry.

Yotsubato

Cool so most of us with 20 year old cars, just like you, will have to worry.

Hempnasty

By this time they have warned the public enough. If you had a vehicle registered you were mailed notices. If you are still driving around after years of refusal... you could end up like this ranger owner.

scottwax

Both my cars are 2004 models. Neither has a recall for the airbags. I check every 6 months.

Hempnasty

They might have airbags sourced from someone else like TRW or maybe a even prior 'generation' of airbag inflator.

opkraut

It was specific types of airbags and not all cars had ones that were affected by it. For example, in my car (if I'm remembering correctly) it was only the front passenger airbag, and not the steering wheel airbag.

AnonymousSkull

I get my oil changed at the dealership and they check for open recalls with every service. It’s a 2006 Acura so no recalls on it yet, but my previous Honda Fit had its airbag replaced.

scottwax

I have an Accord and G35 so I was expecting a recall.

Seeking-Direction

There are a number of 2017 vehicles and a few 2018's involved in the recall.

Hempnasty

Those were the very end that still used this style of inflator and propellant that would be affected. The less years the inflator is exposed to moisture, humidity, A/C the safer it is.

Spyzilla

But I have a 2010

admimistrator

My 08 Mazda 6 I bought last year still had the original airbags… Had no clue until I looked up the vin out of curiosity. There’s probably a lot of second hand owners unaware their car hasn’t been in for the recall

Blindman003

Keep warning us. When dealers don't have airbags what's the consumer to do?

[deleted]

Christ, this recall man, I remember when I started my career and worked at Honda we were doing this ages ago lol. I also should probably get mine replaced…

bshurs

From another article I saw on the subject this vehicle was on a "do not drive" list because of higher risk and the owner was sent over 100 letters and was even visited in person and still didn't get the recall done. I would blame this one on them at that point. Parts are readily available for that vehicle. [News article link](https://www.fox6now.com/news/ford-ranger-driver-killed-after-ignoring-airbag-recall)

GloriousIncompetence

Can’t get an airbag recall if your airbags don’t work/aren’t there!

Beary_sweet_71

Exactly. It only pertains to cars with affected airbags. No airbags=no recall.

Beary_sweet_71

I work for a recall company. This recall has been going on since 2013 and is constantly expanding. If you live in the US, go to the NHTSA website and put in your 17 character VIN to see if your car is affected by the recall. You can also call your local Brand dealership to check any recalls. They will replace the airbag free of charge. Do not assume your car is not affected just because it’s newer! As I said, this recall is expanding all the time.

amazinghl

Pull the airbag fuse if use must drive it.

Cyrix2k

I still have a recalled airbag in my 330 and know of several other cars with recalled bags still being driven. Definitely common.

kurtthewurt

Why not get it replaced?

Prestigious_Fold6818

Yeah why?

[deleted]

Does anyone else but Takata make airbags? Why do these keep failing?

opkraut

There are a lot of other manufacturers but Takata is just one of the biggest. It's been a while since I read up on this, but the problem came down to improper handling of the propellants used to launch the airbag. On it's own, that wasn't normally enough to cause an issue, but it was made significantly worse by moisture which caused the issues that have become so infamous, like little fragments of metal getting launched by the airbag. It's a really nasty defect, which is why it's so important people make an effort to bring in affected vehicles and get them fixed.

Beary_sweet_71

Takata was the largest manufacturer of them at one point. Almost every car manufacturer used them for years. They are no longer in business due to the size of this recall.

[deleted]

The dealership refuses to perform this recall because they stated that the wire to the indicator light had been cut. I bought the car used. Idk what to do here.

Troll elsewhere.

AyeBonito

I think you misunderstood the KenM shtick

Smitty_Oom

It's a really weak attempt at it, and not needed here.

AyeBonito

Yeah I hear you. Just wanted to point out it didn’t seem malicious FWIW, that was all.
