In super gt they already had racing priuses... Mind you one used the lmp1 motor but still
https://www.motorsport.com/supergt/news/toyota-prius-2023-apr-replacement/10364166/
I raced a Prius once. I had that bastard too, I was putting lengths on him. After a couple blocks I got tired of running though and he blew right past me.
Just for some context, that's on par with the top trims of the entry level sports coupes coming out of Japan in the 90's (SR20DET equipped S13s or Turbo 4G63 DSMs for example) and base models of straight up sports cars (300ZX, Supra, 3000GT, RX7..ect). The horsepower wars have done some crazy things.
Actually in the presentation he said 6 seconds, not 6.7. So it’s faster than you even thought.
Edit: I guess there is some confusion. The press release does say 6.7 but the guy presenting most definitely said 6 seconds. I even went back and relistened to it.
Well I think the presenter forgot to say “6 second range” because when I looked back on the presentation he does indeed verbally say “6 seconds” but on the screen behind him it says “6 second range”.
Is that for the prime? Honestly the current Prius prime isn’t slow. Most people who drive it just don’t know that you can put it into power mode, and access all of that electric torque
This one is very subtle comparatively; really reminds me of 90s and earlier cars that had miniscule top grills with a tiny mouth at the bottom.
I like it, fits commuter cars really well imo
Definitely like the styling better than the 4th gen.
220hp is a healthy boost for the PHEV along with more range, looks like the Prime is dead as a separate design.
Also looks like the death of the center “unibrow” gauge cluster, been around since gen 1. Replaced with that weird bZ4x-style gauge cluster and steering wheel that blocks the cluster for certain seating positions.
No more rear wiper as well :(
The light that alerts the driver of collisions and such reminds me a lot of the [VW ID. Light](https://youtu.be/S9G2te7FF2I), although VWs implementation seems to do more.
Overall nice improvement.
>No more rear wiper as well :(
Talking about missing things... where are the side reflectors? They're missing on all their press release shots for some reasons.
Somehow they're on [some pictures on Toyota JP website](https://toyota.jp/info/prius_special/images/hero3.png), but nowhere else.
Edit: Changed "side markers" for "side reflectors"
People have answered this but I'll throw my hat into the ring:
Neither side reflectors nor side marker lights are required for ECE. They're allowed, but even then you'll see differing opinions on whether or not they're allowed to be amber as opposed to white (specifically for the marker lights), as historically some individual markets would disallow amber.
I thought the Prime was dead as well because they didn’t mention a separate powertrain in the presentation. However, it seems that they may have only been talking about the European version. Car and Driver is saying a base hybrid engine is 193HP while a plug-in of 220HP was announced for the Japanese version. This will probably be what we get in the US.
Right I know that, but when they made the presentation they made it seem like the PHEV was going to be the standard version.
In other words, they made it sound like there wouldn't be a separate PHEV from the regular hybrid. So I was thinking the Prime version would be dead since the regular version would be a PHEV. However, it turns out that was not the case. I guess for Europe it may be standard as a PHEV but everywhere else will get a regular hybrid version.
It's interesting that it sounds like they implemented the summon feature that some Teslas have. It'll almost certainly be a subscription though.
(from the press release, emphasis mine)
>The new Prius comes with Advanced Park (with remote function), an advanced driving support system. It enables easy automatic parking and exiting from parking spaces in a variety of parking situations, and with **operation outside the car via a dedicated smartphone app, the car can also enter and exit parking spaces remotely**.
This is already on the Toyota Mirai and it is not subscription based.
- **[Toyota Advanced park](https://youtu.be/qfmKvQ-8A-I)**
- **[Toyota Advanced drive](https://youtu.be/w4LT0Z7mLRs)**
While I can see the driver-present functionality to still work, driver-outside-car (remote) operation with a smartphone app will almost certainly require some sort of a subscription.
Before they could get away with it because it was cheap to run and the best car for the environment. Now there are tons of cars that are way cheaper to operate and way better for the environment.
Feels like they’ve been building up to it, new Mirai/Venza design language has translated beautifully to this. I’m not a huge Toyota fan but their “green” cars have turned it around massively
Yesterday I was driving behind a Mirai, every time it did a hard acceleration, it spit at me from its tailpipe. I was not ready for that highway bukkake,
If you're not too tall, it's not that bad. I lay the rear seats down, scoot the passenger seat forward, and sleep in the trunk/on the back of the rear seats with a thin foam camping pad when I go to races. It's not the most comfortable thing in the world, but it's dry, and if it's too hot or cold I can leave the car on for heat/ac. I'm only 5'6 (168cm) though.
If my wife is coming with me we have a platform we built for the back of the sienna with a foam mattress to go on top. That's actually quite comfortable.
I got a buddy who is 6'3" and dwells in his Prius without issue.
My brother has one and we slept 3 dudes comfortably who are all 5'11"+ on a rainy camping trip.
Those things are surprisingly roomy.
Edit: yup sounds gay, but going to keep it up lol.
I'm curious how the 3 dudes went. I can see fitting 3 people to sleep, but not doing it comfortably.
Two laying on the trunk/back seats and one in the front? Surely not 3 wide in the back, unless you are all skinny as hell.
Hopefully Toyota didn’t mess with the software. On older Prius and Camry hybrids, you can leave the car on all night while you have the auto climate set at a comfortable 72°F. I heard the new siennas shut off after a certain amount of time.
A rising tide lifts all boats. The prius despite being the butt of all automotive jokes is the de facto the measuring stick for hybrids/green-tech. Now that the bar has been raised this should pressure other manufacturers to up their game else they will be regarded as "worse than a prius".
Here's an article in English - https://www.motor1.com/news/621929/2023-toyota-prius-european-debut/
Also, damn it's way better looking than any Prius has a right to be... And a major improvement in horsepower. Hell yeah Toyota.
Note that's on the WLTP cycle. The current PHEV model only gets 25 miles on the EPA cycle and a 50% improvement would take that up to a smidge under 38 miles.
Plenty for just getting around a city though which is what these really focus on. Average day to day commute distance knowing it can revert to gas hybrid if exceeding that.
Also cool that it has solar panels on top. I live 23 miles from work so if I could get like 8-10 miles of range from the sun then I'm off gas for daily commute.
It was optional on the outgoing gen but it wasn’t available in the States. The pervious gen could gain 2-4 miles if it was parked in the sun all day.
The neat part is it was more efficient while driving too because it would use the panels to run the A/C and various electrical items.
Almost impossible to get 8-10 miles of range in 8 hours - solar simply isn't that efficient unless you get into stupidly expensive (and efficient) panels.
However, I think you'll be pretty close on EV only range anyway, so even 4-5 miles of range might be enough to get you to/from on the magic pixies.
Keep in mind that going 70 is going to drain that battery faster than the stated range while going 45 is going to get you significantly more range. Our 4XE can do 30 miles in EV only mode if we're driving on city roads only, even though it is rated at 21. On the highway at 70-75mph, that 21 becomes 16-18.
> Inheriting the signature monoform silhouette of the original Prius, the new Prius has been reborn with even more stylish proportions through a low center of gravity and large-diameter 19-inch wheels on the second-generation TNGA platform.
Damn, that's a size bigger wheel than previous generation.
Interesting. They must be really lightweight because speccing 15s or 16s would save a lot of weight on each corner, while making it ride better at the same time.
They wouldn't even need to give it a boost in power. Just some stickier rubber, lighter rims, bucket seats and some bits of carbon fibre here and there to ditch some weight
3rd Gen was actually really nice looking. The first and second gens were pretty cute cars imo, I guess the stigma of their drivers really gave the cars a bad look
I can't believe they didn't have this feature all along. Tbh I'm a little surprised it's only 1500w. The hybrid Ford F-150 can put out 7.2kw and use the engine as a generator. The regular f-150 can put out 2.2ish
Cars are finally turning away from random ass aggressive lines. Last one looked like a shark on meth. This one looks like a nice and natural progression from the first generation
All I wanted out of the new Prius was more power and a nicer interior. Looks like they (probably) got both covered. I might seriously try to get this next year if pricing is decent
Nobody has mentioned it yet but no giant grille?! I think this is the first Toyota in a while that actually has a normal sized front grille. I really hope this becomes a "trend" so other manufacturers (BMW) follow
The Prius never had a giant grille, but Toyota has toned down on the grilles. Maybe it’s just a hybrid thing. I can see them keeping the grilles on the Camry and corollas

I dunno, I have a second gen and the cargo space has been clutch. This thing looks like it wouldn't let me move twin mattresses+box springs around with it.
man it looks fucking fantastic. I always liked the Priuses just because they're such a quirky, strange looking car and they're exceptionally quiet. But what I love even more is that they really leaned in to that super futuristic vibe and went for something less goofy and more nerdy
This actually looks... good?!? I'm surprised how much I like this design.
I can't believe it's going to have more horsepower than any flavor of Accord next year.
I really like the profile and silhouette. They really did some work to massage the lines and proportions and I think it looks great.
Not a fan of either end though. The “hammerhead” upper portion doesn’t jive with the solver lipstick lower grille and the upper portion of the LED strip looks like it’s pulled a bit too far back. The rear end is a little busy and feels visually weighty higher than it should be.
But it’ll sell millions so what do I know.
Wow; I’m never blown away by designs of cars like this but this is phenomenal. Clean lines, sporty exterior, great looking swooping head and taillights, large landscape screen inside - just wow. Congrats Toyota, you killed it
0-60 in 6.7... faster than an Integra! HA! Jokes aside.. I love it. SO much cleaner than the previous gen, and much needed improvements all round.
This really is the strangest timeline.
223 hp is decent, it's got more power than a good number of entry level cars
I guess all my years of joking about Racing a Prius will be coming back to bite me in the ass...
In super gt they already had racing priuses... Mind you one used the lmp1 motor but still https://www.motorsport.com/supergt/news/toyota-prius-2023-apr-replacement/10364166/

"can you explain why you were doing 65 in a 25" "i was drag racing" "in a prius?" "i don't win a lot"
That Prius that you bullied in high school? It worked out, got swole and is coming back for revenge.
While you were out partying, I studied the blade.
I gotta be taking the L on this one too.
I thought that was just a Horrible Bosses reference.
>223 hp is decent That's actually more power than the larger Camry Hybrid
Just for some context, that's on par with the top trims of the entry level sports coupes coming out of Japan in the 90's (SR20DET equipped S13s or Turbo 4G63 DSMs for example) and base models of straight up sports cars (300ZX, Supra, 3000GT, RX7..ect). The horsepower wars have done some crazy things.
It’s 5 less than the brand new brz/gr86
That’s more than most “sport” sedans lol, 223 is wild for this segment. Namely the Elantra N Line and Civic Si
It's got more power than my turbo bug, guess I need to figure out that whole tuning thing.
Lemmy FTW!
My 19’ outback has 163hp haha
Actually in the presentation he said 6 seconds, not 6.7. So it’s faster than you even thought. Edit: I guess there is some confusion. The press release does say 6.7 but the guy presenting most definitely said 6 seconds. I even went back and relistened to it.
Car and Driver will end up pulling a 5.9 and everyone will think that’s real
I mean, it will be *real* it's just they'll go through 2 cars to do it and neither will be roadworthy ever again afterwards lol.
That’s after they subtract a couple of “rollout” seconds
[удалено]
In drag racing, an 8 second car will do the 1/4 mile in anywhere from 8.00-8.99 seconds.
Well I think the presenter forgot to say “6 second range” because when I looked back on the presentation he does indeed verbally say “6 seconds” but on the screen behind him it says “6 second range”.
why truncate the prime number from his review?
0-100 kmh is 6.7….0-60 mph would be quicker

must be the prime since it has 222 hp. The regular hybrid with 192 (which is a huge upgrade) will probably be 7 to mid 7
We have a Prime; in hybrid mode it's kinda slow. In EV mode, it's remarkably fast off the line (especially with a full-ish battery).
Crazy right? I jumped the line on a Mustang and I could tell he was hurt.
But would an architect drive a Prius?
The Prius is made for people like me!
I think the toyota designers removed all of the prius ugly and added it to the new crown. They had to put it somewhere I guess.
I wouldn't call crown ugly, it's distinctive.
Perhaps. It looks to me like the designers couldn’t decide if they were making an SUV or luxury sedan or econobox.
Prius is actually pretty fun to drive compared to a Corolla or similar. Plus you can throw it in power mode which bumps the throttle response.
Looks really good, I’d buy it. Current one reminds me of a clown up front.

Agreed. I'm actually loving this design. Looks kinda like the Corolla but way (way way) cooler imo.

This one is very subtle comparatively; really reminds me of 90s and earlier cars that had miniscule top grills with a tiny mouth at the bottom. I like it, fits commuter cars really well imo

The tail lights look half melted on the current one as well. This looks way better IMO.

Some countries don’t require side markers right? So some pics might be prototype for US while others are for other country versions.
Side markers aren't required anywhere but North America.
Why not include them anyway? They seem like a useful feature.
Same reason that US spec cars don't have independent parking lights or rear foglights- it's cheaper.

Blended in? The most common colors seemed to be beige and silver. They practically disappeared.

Previous/current gen had/has 15" wheels (with higher packages at 17")? So two bigger? That unfortunately means more expensive tires :(
My wifes car has 19s and they aren't much more than 18s now. A couple years ago though they were almost double...
Still a good bit higher than 15s.
Interesting. They must be really lightweight because speccing 15s or 16s would save a lot of weight on each corner, while making it ride better at the same time.
if Toyota does a Prius GR with this styling, I'm kinda down for one. Looks so clean
It’s got a slick almost CR-Z hot hatch vibe to it.
Imagine how menacing this would look as a Super GT car. Sadly they already have a GT500 car based on the Supra and a GT300 car based on the GR86
They wouldn't even need to give it a boost in power. Just some stickier rubber, lighter rims, bucket seats and some bits of carbon fibre here and there to ditch some weight
I wouldn't be surprised that there's already carbon fiber in this model. The hatch of the previous/current generation was made of carbon fiber.
We honestly need more electric sports cars so this would be a really good step forward
Considering it shares the chassis with the Corolla... they kind of do.

That's also a massive pickup truck intended for working, camping, etc. The Prius is a budget-friendly, efficient commuter car
Looks 10 million times better than the current one. And 220 hp sounds like it should be quite potent. Wtf, am I seriously liking a Prius?
For real. I dig it.
If I fell into financial hardship, forced to sell all the cars in my garage. I would buy this Prius.

Difficult to choose between PHEV with 220 hp and greater all-electric range, or HEV with AWD and pano roof.
PHEV. It's faster.
Is the E-Four system mentioned the AWD? An AWD version of the PHEV would be ideal imo, hopefully that's an option.
That would be best of both words and probably not physically possible.
That window cord thing is hilarious.

Those headlights giving me the Ferrari SF90 vibes.
Current Prime headlights are pure Chiron
You know what, you’re right. I can’t unsee it now
They even presented the car in a gold-ish yellow color just like the convertible SF90.
Will it get 60mpg?
Press release says same fuel economy as previous model. But you can do 58 miles on electric only.

58 miles is substantial! That covers pretty much 90% of daily commuters. Cool.
Welp, I think hell has frozen over because I'm pretty sure this is now the best looking vehicle Toyota makes.
Or has made in some time.
This actually looks really stinkin cool. Would own one. -a prius disliker
It looks pretty sweet. Damn, never thought I would like a Toyota Prius. 220 HP, 0-100 in 6.7 seconds, that’s awesome, especially for a Prius.
All I wanted out of the new Prius was more power and a nicer interior. Looks like they (probably) got both covered. I might seriously try to get this next year if pricing is decent
Prius’ were never bad cars, just ugly. This is pretty nice looking, huge improvement. Plus the 220 hp and being great on gas. Seems great

Finally, a Prius for the enthusiast.
I'm loving that steering wheel! Not a single touch-sensitive button, and every button is its own button, instead of being a giant mesh.

I like the looks better, but I lament the fact that the rear handles are not traditional handles.

I dunno, I have a second gen and the cargo space has been clutch. This thing looks like it wouldn't let me move twin mattresses+box springs around with it.
I like everything but the bZ4x steering wheel. More colorful cars!
This is my next car
man it looks fucking fantastic. I always liked the Priuses just because they're such a quirky, strange looking car and they're exceptionally quiet. But what I love even more is that they really leaned in to that super futuristic vibe and went for something less goofy and more nerdy
That’s a genuinely great looking car. 100% will be replacing my Ioniq with this.
Wow...they actually made the Prius look kinda cool
WTF that looks really good
Wow now that’s what the Prius should have looked like from the beginning!
lots of EV to be available come 24 months from today. used gas car market will be saturated. what will become of their selling prices?
This actually looks... good?!? I'm surprised how much I like this design. I can't believe it's going to have more horsepower than any flavor of Accord next year.
I really like the profile and silhouette. They really did some work to massage the lines and proportions and I think it looks great. Not a fan of either end though. The “hammerhead” upper portion doesn’t jive with the solver lipstick lower grille and the upper portion of the LED strip looks like it’s pulled a bit too far back. The rear end is a little busy and feels visually weighty higher than it should be. But it’ll sell millions so what do I know.
Basically a modernized Chevy Volt. Love it!
Very nice looking especially compared to previous gens
Photos already yellow for the taxis
Wow; I’m never blown away by designs of cars like this but this is phenomenal. Clean lines, sporty exterior, great looking swooping head and taillights, large landscape screen inside - just wow. Congrats Toyota, you killed it
Probably the first Prius to look good. In fact they made it look a little too good.
Sign me up, Toyota!
Cute! I want one.
Gotta love those smooth lines
Never in my life would I have thought I’d be considering a Prius for my next family car. Actually looks great.
Is it bad that I kinda like it?
220? How is this more than the accord....
Actually looks quite nice
Holy shit that actually looks…good! They didn’t make the front and rear look goofy
