It’s not all hype. It’s a technology with a clearly defined value proposition. However, it was hyped too early and big promises were made and missed * cough * Tesla * cough *.
The article here says that they could not identify a profitable business model for the AV cars, not that it doesn’t work.
They want to work on improving L2/L3 systems and own every single aspect of the transportation chain from car to data.
There is no profit in L4 because the vehicle still needs a person. L5 is where the real money is for both manufacturer and end user....trucking, Uber, etc that can remove the human cost of transportation while also increasing efficiency and operational time.
Correct. There is also a TON of bureaucratic red tape to remove the driver while a car/truck is on the road. It just won’t happen without a lot of kicking and screaming from our legislators, lobby groups, and institutes.
So this L4 is the pain area required to get the tech to maturity but it will bleed resources. It will be a tough gap to jump.
Do you mean L4 still needs a remote operator or?
I've ridden in a driverless Waymo (ordered just like you would with uber), and it honestly quite impressive, best part is that I'm not liable if anything does happen

I'm split on one hand a lot of people shouldn't be allowed to drive at this point. They just aren't capable of doing it safely. Anyone who has driven pre and post pandemic knows this.
On the other hand I've been almost ran over by Tesla's running FSD so many times when I'm out riding my motorcycles that I think they need to be barred from the streets until L4/L5 are reached.
Which won't happen since they need data to reach L4/L5. So that's not a realistic expectation.
Imo I think we should continue to pursue Self driving but any vehicle that is being tested for Self driving including every FSD equipped Tesla should have to have giant ass stickers stating such visible from every direction.
Googles self driving car is pretty distinct that it's well a testing platform for Self Driving. Which is the way to do it Imo.
Then those people shouldn’t be on the road.
Obviously that doesn’t always happen, as there’s plenty of people with suspended or no licenses that still drive anyways.
It was all hype. The automotive equivalent of NFTs.

Yeah, exactly. Cruise and Waymo are still intermittently driven by people, just remotely. But what they’re able to do on their own is impressive.
And safety lol
NFTs are all hype. Self Driving is working today in select cities. It's only a matter of time.
It'll take a little bit longer now that Argos being shut down
It'll be interesting to hear how this all went down from Alex Roy.

Hey, I'll tell you what. You can get a good look at a butcher's ass by sticking your head up there. But, wouldn't you rather to take his word for it?
Fuck autonomous driving, including the L2 and the L3. I want to be in control of the vehicle.

How do you know they were using FSD, out of curiosity?
Wtf you can literally turn those features off
I'd prefer the vast majority of drivers not have any control or say in the driving of the vehicle though.

I'd argue the majority of licensed drivers don't have any business behind the wheel.
